I ended up using a usb charger in the cig port, a usb A to micro cable, and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MHIVYZ8 to link everything together.
lighter port -> microusb -> hub power in

hub uplink -> mazda usb

I'm able to plug my phone (pixelXL) into the hub, and am able to use android auto to navigate while staying charged

So, anyone know of a USB3 > USB Hub + Ethernet adapter that works with iPads?

I have the one I linked, and with the Thunderbolt Camera adapter (which gives a full size USB port, and a passthrough Thunderbolt for power) I get a message that says it's not supported.

However I know a card reader, keyboard, and usb>ethernet adapter do all work, but I want to have as few cables and components as possible. Ethernet simplifies things for me as far as the network goes. I'm trying to replace a similar setup of which the hardware cost is $1k+ USD.

To charge while using Android Auto, you need a special USB hub.

Buy that, and a high amp USB charger for the cigarette lighter outlet. The USB charger for the cigarette lighter plugs into the side with the single USB port, and phone plugs into one of the 3 hub ports. The hub itself plugs into the car.

The car charger will provide power to the USB charging hub, while the hub will provide the android auto connection that you want.

I tried both of these 15ft active 3.0 cables and neither works.

When plugged in they start out as USB 3.0 and usually within a minute they give errors and drop to 2.0 and stay there. You can power the other end of both cables but that doesn't make any difference.

The sensors seem to work fine in 2.0, and I hear conflicting reports about how much better 3.0 is or isn't than 2.0 nowadays.

EDIT:

Ok, this is weird! I dug out a 4-port 3.0 HUB, plugged it into the end of one of the 15ft cables and plugged both sensors into it and they have been working fine in 3.0 for half an hour now. Tried both cables, works great. But remove the hub and plug the sensor directly into the extension, errors and drops back to 2.0. Very very strange.
