There's some great advice in this thread, but I'd like to add - buy slim velvet hangers. I thought my closet was full and just by replacing all my hangers with extra slim ones, I was able to actually save a lot of space in my closet, eliminating basically one whole side of hanger area, so that it looks much less cluttered. I purchased some like these from Amazon, and they're amazing.
