I used something like this and it worked for years. I think you could probably buy something like that at a pet store that sells fish and reptiles and stuff, or possibly at a garden supply store.

Same experience here. I got mine for my kombucha, and it was just a random one off Amazon, around $20. It came with some calibration solution powder as well. It's been reliable since I got it last year.

Edit: this one, more like $15. https://www.amazon.com/VANTAKOOL-Accuracy-Measurement-Household-Drinking/dp/B0789G7MVP?keywords=PH+meter&qid=1537457868&sr=8-3&ref=mp_s_a_1_3

This is a tool that you get what you pay for. I have the Thermoworks 8689. I like it, and it works really well. The probe stays wet in storage which many of the cheaper models don't do.

I had one of these styles and it certainly worked, but I was always having to re-calibrate it, even with frequent use. I can't say that I found it overly trustworthy.

I got this one, they're all pretty much the same I'd imagine https://www.amazon.com/VANTAKOOL-Accuracy-Measurement-Household-Drinking/dp/B0789G7MVP

I have used ocean forrest and happy frog and have never seen pH levels like that. Im sure the meter is not giving you good readings directly in soil. Dont worry about it just pH the water you put in to about 6.5 and the soil should be a good buffer.
