To date, I have used my dash cam for zero accident evidence, but have seen countless terrible drivers to the point that I stopped bothering to save the videos, caught a fantastic lightning strike, and this moment.

Edit: To all those that are asking:

Yes, this is Edmonton, Alberta. Northbound on Terwillegar drive, going over the Anthony Henday.

I know that the last bit of snow is preventing 100% satisfaction, so I'm going to endeavor to look through the footage in the hope of making a second GIF of the wiper taking care of that. I don't know if it ever does, but I'll try to find out.

100% Satisfaction has been achieved: https://imgur.com/eqduRsf

I'm sorry, I lost the footage of the lightning strike. But here's a close call I had: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ibz_zn8BRIY

Edit 2: The camera is a VanTrue N1

I recently purchased this. Got it for $50 with a promo code. So far it works great. Would recommend if you can find it on sale.

Two issues I've encountered are the placement of the power socket under the arm rest and the fact that the socket continues to produce power while the car is turned off. The socket is far away from the windshield so until I can figure out a cable management solution it's going to look somewhat ugly with cables running down the center console. This particular camera has the ability to turn on/off when the car is turned on/off (while plugged in), so with constant power this feature is useless. The camera does have a rechargeable battery though so i'll just have to keep it charged as best as possible.

There's also a parking feature that allows the camera to use motion detection while you're parked. I've only had it for a few days but it's pretty solid. The only thing I'm concerned about is the Texas heat. If I were to leave it mounted in direct sunlight I don't think it survive.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

> I almost want to get a dashcam and start a blog with all the poor driving I see on a daily basis.

I cannot recommend this one anymore. The battery now lasts maybe a minute or two now after I turn off the engine (and trickles out if I leave the cam plugged into the mount). So the date stamp resets to default if I leave it plugged in.

Best to go for a capacitor-based cam, from the consensus at /r/dashcam. I've got a slickdeals alert setup for an A119 (v2)
