About a year ago I picked up a Whal lithium ion cordless trimmer to replace my dying NiCad-powered beard trimmer, but it's so absurdly powerful that it replaced my corded hair trimmer as well.

u/shaun3000 · 4 pointsr/sex

NO! IT's AWFUL! I don't know why it is so highly rated. It is cheaply made, the motor is weak and the weak battery doesn't help. It's fine for light work. If you want something that you won't want to throw against a wall, check out Wahl or similar. I bought this, recently, and couldn't be happier with it. Solidly built and it does in five minutes what took twenty with the damn Norelco POS.

u/user_none · 4 pointsr/sex

In 100% agreement. I'm 44, and have gone through many iterations of manscaping over the years. One constant is shaving will irritate the skin. Sometimes the irritation will be mild. Others, there's a very negative reaction (bumps, rash).

I'm a life long cyclist as well and started shaving my legs at 15 years old. Same story there, though the legs are much more resistant to shaving and the sensitivity.

Here's the Wahl trimmer I use. http://www.amazon.com/Wahl-9854-600-Lithium-Ion-Trimmer/dp/B001GQ3GEY/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1419454006&sr=8-9&keywords=wahl+clippers

Trimmers I've owned:

Wahl All-in-One 9854-600

Pros: powerful clippers with a very long battery life. Suitable for all types of body hair grooming.

Cons: Only one guard that I consider suitable for stubble length and I'd prefer more options on that front. Not waterproof.

Trym II

Pros: Charging stand and sleek look allows you to keep it in plain sight on your bathroom counter without the counter appearing cluttered.

Cons: Fewer guard options than the Wahl, and seemed less powerful, although for the purposes of trimming stubble it seemed minimally sufficient.

Trimmers I'd consider if I were in the market right now:

Something more premium: Philips Norelco Beard trimmer Series 7200

Philips is generally at the top of the list for reviews of beard trimmers, and the dedicated beard trimmer gives you more options for stubble length. Lastly, after a couple years of maintaining stubble-length growth, I can now see why the vacuum feature would be desirable. Trimming down to stubble is messy business.

Something affordable, yet highly rated and with more options for stubble length: Wahl Beard Trimmer

I have, on occasion, wished I had more versatility in choosing a stubble length (a little longer or just a tad shorter - depending). A dedicated beard trimmer that doesn't break the bank would be a good starting point on that front.

My father bought one ~6 years ago and I bought one a few years ago. Both are still going strong and attachments are pretty good quality. None of that thin stamped stuff. Iirc I spent $40 on mine. just checked Amazon and they have a live $5 off coupon for a set bringing it down to $35.

> I've never shaved as I believe that will cause a unfortunate stronger return.

Old wives' tale.

Edit: Also get some trimmers, like these. I don't have much body hair except for on my legs (I trim my thighs down to a 1), and a 1 will look good although it's a bit prickly for a day (possible turn off).

u/aerynjbson · 3 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Norelco is a pretty good brand. Don't get one that has those three sided round blade type things. Get the old school ones.

I have an older model of this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B017PCICCS/ref=psdcmw_234951011_t2_B003U8ESI4

I can use it in the shower too, just obviously don't make a point to get it wet.

And it takes practice to trim everything up with it. But it won't take more than a handful of times to figure out how to handle everything to get the desired results.

Wahl is also a brand I've used with good results.

My bf uses this one for his trimming needs.

It's not the cheapest option, but it's lasted me a long time and I use it everywhere except my nose. The body groomer:

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-BG2040-34-Bodygroom-Grooming/dp/B0037HP9OA

Before this one, I had a wahl, which I really liked. It seemed very powerful and precise for the price. Eventually it started to rust.

trim>shave

as was said, use a beard trimmer, get something decent so it wont pull your hair....and dont go cheap, a good beard/mustache trimmer will last you years...especially if you get a lithium ion battery....

I think you're looking for two different things. An electric razor would be good for shaving either his head or his beard smooth. Some beard trimmers can be set up to leave stubble. I've had good luck with Wahl Lithium-Ion models like this: http://www.amazon.com/Wahl-9854-600-Lithium-Ion-Trimmer/dp/B001GQ3GEY

The shaving attachment on that trimmer, however, is pretty much worthless. I prefer braun electric razors for shaving, but some people like norelco or panasonic.

u/Banner_Free · 3 pointsr/AskMen

Norelco trimmers start at $18, so if you can't afford that, your best bet is using a regular razor. Personally, though, I'd go with /u/An_Honest_Ferengi 's suggestion of the Wahl Groomsman. It's an excellent brand.

If you have a few more bucks to spend, I own and love the Wahl Lithium Ion Trimmer. It is by far the most powerful cordless trimmer I've ever used, and the battery life is incredible. Highly recommended.

u/Derasi · 2 pointsr/ladyshavers

Whal has a pretty great standard of quality for the price. The clippers I use are:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GQ3GEY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

There's actually an attachment head to this one that trims short hairs even shorter, pretty much to the bare skin. It's the big one with two curved rows (shown in the middle here).

Here's my method:
Use the clipper flat on your skin without a guard to trim hairs short (1-3mm), then take the big head to finish the job. The big head can't pick up long hairs, but it's a pro at short hairs. The big head works in such a way that it won't irritate or bite your skin.

Here's what's great about that big head: since it only works on short hairs, you can use it every few days to keep your skin bare, really without even looking. If I let it go too long I have to trim it again.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have questions.

u/MrWally · 2 pointsr/malegrooming

I cannot oversell my love for this razor:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001GQ3GEY

It's technically not a hair trimmer, but with the wide blade option it certainly works if you're going for a short buzz. It also lasts forever (I've had mine for running on 5 years), and I honestly have to charge it once every few months.

It is worth mentioning that some of the attachments work better than others, and the plastic stand it comes with is pretty cheap.

u/LVOgre · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Wahl makes a Li-Ion model that's pretty darned good. I've been using mine for 3 years, I charge it maybe 3 times a year.

https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Lithium-Ion-Grooming-9854-600/dp/B001GQ3GEY

u/ohstrangeone · 2 pointsr/ReviewThis

This is what I use, works fine, don't get it too wet (then it shorts, then you have to let it sit and dry for a couple days, then it's fine), and regardless of which one you get you will have to inevitably replace the blades on them (man face hair dulls those suckers like no other). Oh, and the replacement blades are only available from Wahl's website (search by the specific model number--no, no other replacement blades for any other model will work, I learned the hard way).

u/masamunecyrus · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

How much do you want it shaved? If you want silky smooth.. I've got nothing. But if you're looking for a very close trim, I use one of these lithium ion Wahl trimmers for my facial hair. It trims fine--no pulling--and it can get close enough to the skin that I exclusively use it for trimming and shaping my facial hair.

I can't imagine you're going to find any electric razor that's BIFL, let alone a sub-$100 one, but I'd recommend that Wahl for /r/GoodValue.

u/PeteyFalcon · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I cant speak for the clippers, but I will speak for THIS beard trimmer. I have had it for 4 years and it is my go to for shaping up my beard. I also have THIS Phillips Norelco trimmer as well but never use it. The Wahl is so much more sharper and precise. It is very easy to use and allows you to do fine and detailed trimming. The Wahl also was half the price of the Phillips.

As far as electric shavers go i have had the same Braun 4775 since 2006 and it is still going strong. All i have had to do is change out the blades once a year and keep it oiled. I always wanted a newer one, but this one refuses to die.

Edit: I know this is the BIFL sub, I was just speaking on my experience. I better go knock on wood before they all fail me now.

u/Piece_of_Maurice · 1 pointr/Wetshaving

don't have a goatee but i keep a full beard that i have to trim every week to keep it conservative-ish (i work in a hospital). i've used 3 beard trimmers over the years and this one by wahl is BY FAR the best one:

https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Lithium-Ion-Grooming-9854-600/dp/B001GQ3GEY/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1479217356&sr=1-1&keywords=wall%2Bbeard&th=1

it's cordless and has a rechargeable battery which stays charged forever (other trimmers ive used have needed AA batteries), and the motor has serious power for a clipper thats not plugged into the wall. the guards that come with it are pretty good and you can really dial in the length you want. as far as shaping goes, I use a DE to shape my neck line and cheek line and have found that to be the best option that i've used, though i can't say i've used a shavette or straight. and since you use a template and the DE is too big to get around it, shavettes are purpose-built for getting great lines and edges, so as u/bdubelyew said that might be your best bet.

u/OklaJosha · 1 pointr/malegrooming

wahl makes very good trimmers. Pretty much every barber I've been to has one. For body hair, get a cordless one. I'd suggest this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Lithium-Ion-Grooming-9854-600/dp/B001GQ3GEY

I don't like completely shaving because it gets itchy when it starts to grow back, so I usually just trim short enough that it's not curling all over the place. I think I use a #4 guard or somewhere around there, see what works out best for you. If you like the smoothness, then you can always use the trimmer everyday to keep short enough (there will still be some stubble if you don't use a razor but it will be minimal)

My husband and I used this one and quite like it.

That's what I use: link

I use the trimmer blade. I don't think it has to do with this particular trimmer, because I've had other trimmers and they all cause razor bumps.

Basically, I'm trimming my beard at the shortest setting, and out of a sudden I get a "bump" on my face. It looks red, inflamed, exactly like a pimple, except there's no pus in it. They appear as I'm trimming, so it's really fast, it doesn't take hours. I tried to poke them with tweezers to see if I could find an ingrown hair, because that's what I thought they were, but I always end up not finding anything and making it worse. And no, they are not pimples that were hidden under my beard. I never let it grow too long, so I would notice them.

u/us416 · 1 pointr/malegrooming

Talk to your partner to find out what they would prefer you do.

When I tidy up, I use one of these on the number 2 setting: http://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Lithium-Ion-All-Trimmer/dp/B001GQ3GEY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1310011071&sr=8-2

After buzzing it down, I take a women's razor (shut up, the extra "guard" helps) to my cajones and make them baby smooth.

It's more work than I would normally do, but my wife loves me that way and if it gets me more action, I'm all for it.

u/Dirtylicious · 1 pointr/lifehacks

I cut hair..

no way a cheapo clipper set could ever beat out the closeness that a beard trimmer gets.

here's a really good trimmer that works quite well @ 30 bucks (~£15 equivalent)
http://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Lithium-Ion-All-Trimmer/dp/B001GQ3GEY

you could use your technique... turning the beard trimmer upside down..and get a much closer cut that you would with a set of clippers.

u/tintinsays · 1 pointr/TwoXChromosomes

I know this was over a month ago, so forgive me. I bought a buzzer with different lengths, and it is great for trimming my hair, especially over my ears.

I have one that is like this but if you're going to cut your bangs too, you might like one like this

u/cgravito · 1 pointr/malegrooming

To be honest , I recently bought this and I have a norelco body groomer but it has all the attachments for it where I don't really even need the body groomer at this point. Only downfall is that I can't use it in the shower but meh, what ever. It is a hell of a beard trimmer too I must say. The foil trimmer gets pretty close on the body in sensitive areas if you get my drift...

Edited: As a heads up, it doesn't come with the stand but I e-mailed Amazon and complained about it, and they offered me a 30% refund on it. Well worth it in my opinion. Even at full price , it's worth it.

Another Wahl! They're still the cream of the crop. I have this kit and it cuts through my rough beard like butter. I wish it came with some longer guards, though, although I'm growing it out so it's all freehand now anyhow.
