You didn't do anything wrong. You were a child, and children do the best they can. None of this is your fault.

You're a product of your parents. When parents are inconsistent in their behavior towards you, it can actually provide a worse environment than if they were consistently neglectful or consistently attentive.

It's time to move forward. I recommend studying psychology to learn about yourself and how the world works. I found being confused about the world made me more erratic and tend to outbursts. Once I felt I understood why people do the things they do, I very quickly calmed down and felt peaceful for the first time ever.

A good first book could be Why Do I Do That?. I found it really helpful to understand different types of people. The blogs "The Last Psychiatrist" and "After Psychotherapy" were helpful to me, too (Neither of which blog much anymore, focusing on books, but their archives are gold).

Ok first I want to say overcoming your depression is more like a marathon than a sprint. Don't feel bad when you slip up or aren't making as much progress as you'd like. If you try to force yourself to be happy you'll burn out faster because it takes energy to maintain a facade. Fake it till you make it doesn't work, ignore any type of advice given to you that resembles that. Having said that.

First, get some blood work done. Having low vitamin D levels can cause depression. Sometimes having problems with your thyroid can also mimic depression symptoms. Once you've ruled out the physical....

Get professional help. If you can't get professional help I'd recommend reading this book. The reason I recommend professional help is because you can be very self sabotaging with depression and it takes effort to read a book. So you might procrastinate or put it off and then feel even worse for not being proactive enough.

But here's a quick rundown of cognitive distortions that you may have.

As an INFP you might fall into the trap of this one quite often.

>Emotional Reasoning.
We believe that what we feel must be true automatically. If we feel stupid and boring, then we must be stupid and boring. You assume that your unhealthy emotions reflect he way things really are — “I feel it, therefore it must be true.”

Tackle this as soon as you possibly can. It won't go away on it's own. Take it seriously because if you don't it'll follow you into adulthood and wreak havoc all over your life. Any more questions feel free to PM me.

Joseph Burgo - Why do I do that? Is a good starting place.

I read this recently and found it interesting. You might recognise some of your behaviours in it...
