any drive you attach via USB and that is formatted FAT32 can be used with the 360. However, if you want to use the drive to store games, game saves, and DLC, you have to let the xbox 360 format it, and the most space it will use per external drive is 16GB. so if you have a 2TB drive formatted as FAT32, and hook it up to the 360 via USB, and tell it to format it for Xbox storage, what will happen is the drive is reformatted as FAT32, and the xbox writes a bunch of files, that will take up as much or as little room as you specify, with a minimum of 1GB and a maximum of 16GB. the rest of the space is still available, and you can plug it into your computer and put whatever you want on there. if it is compatible media, the 360 will even play it back.

What you probably want to do is get one of these. this gives you 320GB of Xbox storage, and it is installed inside the Xbox. much like the PS3, there is a cover you can pop open, and then this drive slides right in. this is the OEM version and it usually floats around $100. if you look around, you can find third party solution for much less, and if you are the DIY sort, you can roll your own, provided you don't mind hunting down a specific drive, and flashing the firmware on it.

But then he'd have to mount it in one of the proprietary enclosures, and if he didn't know that the 360 needed a hard drive, then he probably doesn't have the technical skills to do that. (No offense to OP).

If it's an Xbox 360 slim, he needs one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-320GB-Hard-Drive/dp/B005PSTV2K

If it's an original 360, he needs one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-120GB-Hard-Drive/dp/B000OYKQBU

To my understanding, they have to be proprietary Xbox 360 hard drives like this one.

also I stand corrected, two sizes. although the 250gb one I guess is no longer in production.
these are the only official hard drive that is made and sold. anything outside of that is 3rd party and should be used at your own risk.

Despite not having full HDMI 1.4, PS3's still rank among the best bluray players on the market.

Also you're misinformed on the PS3 hard drive. You can actually use any 2.5'' hdd in it without voiding your warranty, per Sony. So while xbox 360 owners pay for this: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-320GB-Hard-Drive/dp/B005PSTV2K/ref=dp_ob_title_vg

PS3 owners can pay for and use this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136835

Over twice the capacity for $10 less. And if you outgrow 750GB, you can buy a new one and take the old drive and use it upgrade an older laptop.

Yeah, that is totally a realistic price on a not discontinued product, and there is no way you could easily get one that is 16 times larger for only $20 more.

EDIT: Also, found this one, 12.5 times larger, $5 more, for older Xbox generation, also sold here.

EDIT 2: Wow, I just realized, you are using a third party version, which is probably unreliable and in no way a gauge for prices. But, I would like to point out, I am not saying this is not more expensive than non-proprietary hardware, of course it is, all proprietary parts are, but it is not as ridiculous as phreeck would like you to believe.

Not quite, but I do get your point.

Always get a genuine Microsoft hard drive. They have the partition on it that let's you play original Xbox games.
Here's a 320gb starting at $17.99 for a used one.
