The Media Remote has been a GREAT accessory for me. Not having to turn on my controller when I just want to navigate Netflix is wonderful. The remote itself looks nice and feels great in the hand.

It can even control DVR functions now so it can just about replace my cable remote. I think it's one of the best purchases I've made for the Xbox One, as I use it every day and am always glad I have it.

EDIT: By DVR Functions, I meant FF, RW and Play/Pause.

Anything with Plex Home Theater on it, that way you can direct play pretty much everything ever.

I built that machine on Christmas and I am using a Flirc USB IR receiver with an Xbox One Media Remote

I set a task in windows to start PHT as soon as my machine boots and I am ready to go. My machine is a bit overkill for being a dedicated PHT machine, but I can always drop a GPU in it and play games etc. (I also have a wireless 360 controller receiver connected)

Just because you mentioned it Halo Collection is $5 for a digital copy here.

And in case you weren't aware, there is a media remote that people seem to like a lot.

u/TrefoilHat · 4 pointsr/xboxone

Does he/she use it with the TV or play a lot of media?

The Media Remote is awesome.

Or how about a Play & Charge kit?

I keep reading comments like these and it's fair enough if you don't think it's worth it to you, as there is at least a $100 to $150 price tag to 'try out' the Kinect (with the console, or purchased separately).

That being said, unless you've already extensively used the Kinect at a friend's place or something, saying "you wouldn't use it anyways" when you have never used it is pretty dismissive of the new tech. There were tons (TONS) of posts on this sub when the Xbox One first came out (where Kinect wasn't an option) about people saying how they didn't think they would use it, or they were actually upset they had to buy it with the Xbox One, and after using it for a few days or weeks, all of a sudden they love it, they use it all the time, and use it in ways they didn't think they would. Just search this sub for "Kinect" in the post title and check out some of the interesting anecdotes people have if you're interested.

Like I said, it's your money, so it's up to you if you wanted to get it. If it's not worth the extra $100-$150 to you with the console, then I highly recommend you try it elsewhere or purchase it when it drops in price later in the Xbox One console's life-cycle. I thought it would be 'cool new tech' when it was released, but it's fully changed how I interact with the Xbox and use it as my main entertainment hub in the living room. I definitely could not go without the functionality of the Kinect now.

Main useful tip for a console w/o Kinect, is double tapping the xbox home button brings up the snap/unsnap option, and if you're in game, double tap the home button and hit x to record the last 30 seconds of your gameplay. You can also snap game DVR > select end clip now > and choose up to the last 5 minutes of gameplay to record. Also, since you're Kinectless, I highly recommend the Xbox One Media Remote. It has additional buttons for bringing up the OneGuide (Xbox TV Guide), it's backlit, small and you don't have to worry about your controller turning off to rewind/fast forward/pause Netflix, TV, etc.

Also, download the Xbox One Smartglass app on your phone/tablet if you haven't already. It's incredibly useful for typing anything on the console, and for watching game clips, reorganizing your pins, sending/reading messages, or purchasing games and having them auto-download to your xbox at home when you're out.

Just my 2 cents. I hope you're enjoying your new console!

I would say getting PLEX setup would be the number one thing to do if you want to use your Xbox as a media hub. Also get the media remote, it's pretty cheap too.http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-One-Media-Remote/dp/B00IAVDPSA

Don't buy the XBOX-branded media remote:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-One-Media-Remote/dp/B00IAVDPSA

You have to point it directly at your XBOX 1, and the buttons are a slightly-elevated type I have never seen elsewhere. I have to look at these buttons to see what I'm clicking. I've never had to do that with any other remote.

But yeah, if you're not into playing games, don't watch DVDs/Blu-Rays, and have no need of the voice assistant control, there's really no reason to get an Xbox over another device.

u/xevilrobotx · 2 pointsr/xbox

There is a Media Remote (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-One-Media-Remote/dp/B00IAVDPSA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1449181938&sr=8-2&keywords=xbox+one+media+remote) it is pretty cool, use mine all the time. Only bummer is that it uses IR so you have to point it at the xbox. One nice feature is that when you pick it up it glows so you can see it in the dark, and then the glow turns back off when you lay it back down.

If you get a Kinect you can also have the Xbox turn/on off your TV, control your cable box, pause/play content with your voice, etc. An IR blaster will also work for letting you turn on/off your tv with the xbox if you don't want a kinect (there is an IR blaster port on the back of the xbox).

I recommend the free Xbox One Smartglass app. They have it for iOS, Android and Windows Phone.

If you don't have a smartphone or tablet, I'd highly recommend the Xbox One Media Remote. I use mine every day and love it.

I have a gyration air mouse for my htpc, and while the idea is cool, it sorta skips and laggy and stuff. I've determined the cause of this is due to a bluetooth keyboard I have that runs on 2.4 and stuff, so I have come to the conclusion for htpc you cant beat good old IR.

Consider getting a flirc, best money you will ever spend. THen you can use any remote you have in your house.

My personal favorite for the htpc is the xbox one remote.

For 20 bucks canadian, what else could you ask for? It's backlit and everything!

This remote to be clear. Xbox One Media Remote https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IAVDPSA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_nafQAb8MRGDG7
That price is higher than normal though.

The Xbox One Media Remote works beautifully for Kodi when paired with Flirc. It's what I'm using right now. Flirc is a little receiver that allows you to use any remote with your PC, so depending on how much money you feel like spending on your setup, you could get by with just a flirc and a remote you already own. Read more about it here (it has a built-in Kodi profile for Kodi-specific buttons). I've set mine up so every button on the remote is used: Xbox button for Home, view (top left) is mapped to tab (so it'll bring up/dismiss the Kodi interface while a video is playing),
menu (top right) is mapped to info, the OneGuide button to toggle subtitles, up/down pill to scroll to top/bottom of list, and the rest as they are labeled. It feels quite natural with the symbols matching up with the Kodi functions.

To control Windows with any controller you like (Xbox 360/Xbox One/any Xinput controller - so maybe even a DualShock depending on how you set it up), use this app called Controller Companion. It's an inexpensive little utility that makes navigating all aspects of the Windows interface a breeze. Has neat text input, so anything that requires a mouse and keyboard can be handled with this. I'm using it with my Xbox One controller + wireless receiver. I tried Xpadder before, but this felt more sophisticated. It optionally launches with Windows and disables itself when you enter a fullscreen game so you can play the game with the controller, taking over again when you're back at the desktop (can be overridden, also has customisable shortcuts). Supports Steam Big Picture and lets you launch it by pressing the Xbox Guide button.

Otherwise, +1 to that Logitech Harmony j4nds4 mentioned if you're looking for a more traditional remote, that's come up in the research I did too.

You mentioned PinMore for custom tiles. I use it, it's great, but it doesn't support regular apps. I haven't tested it yet but it looks like TileCreator can do that. Lastly if you want to get a little adventurous, check out EventGhost. Came across it a long time ago in the context of remotes but I use it for other things now (directory watcher). You may find it useful for your HTPC.

im referring to the old netflix app, you where able to pick profiles, pick shows, do everything on netflix with just the kinect. but now you cant, all you can do is play, rewind, and fast forward. and my assumption to why they changed the app was promote the usage of the media remote Microsoft has for the xbox one.

u/moar_distractions · 1 pointr/PleX

I don't have one. I just thought the "fullstop" was pretty ridiculous. A quick search shows tons of media remote options.

I've gotten so used to telling my xbox to turn on, go to settings/games/tv/anything, turn off, etc. but speaking loud enough to be heard from all the way across the room can get annoying when I am watching TV in bed.

I use my remote almost religiously at this point since my xbox is almost always on for TV, Netflix, and games of course; but if they added a kinect mic to the remote itself that lets you comfortably speak commands, just like Amazon's FireTV, it would be absolutely perfect... I'm guessing they don't do this because they would make it a much cheaper alternative to the xbox with kinect.

u/Deathbyart · 1 pointr/xboxone

Sigh... it's fine without a Kinect. Smartglass works well, they also make the Media Remote

u/USChills · 1 pointr/xboxone

I bought the Microsoft remote for the Xbox and have zero complaints about it. It was a little pricey but it works like a charm. Started on the launch X One and now use it on the X1X and have no issue. I would buy it again if it broke.

You can get it on amazon for $40

What are you talking about!?

The media remote is remote is the #1 best seller on Amazon for Xbox One Accessories and is ranked #64 in all video-game accessories sold on the entire site. Your belief that few use it is totally not supported by facts. If anyone needs to do some thinking it might be you as you seem oblivious to the fact that making a statement doesn't make it true.
