Hi Jann,
How about a mono earbud? It converts the stereo sound to mono. I use the short version of this and it works great.
I often wear one earbud while listening to podcasts. Some of them will split the voices into L/R channels. Before this, I'd miss half of the show. I haven't had this problem since switching to a mono earbud.
Buy a mono earbud. It will play both stereo channels on the single ear bud.

Try looking up stereo-to-mono earbuds, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Far-End-Gear-Isolating-Earphone/dp/B00BW9EKGI
I don't run with headphones (I like to immerse myself in my thoughts and surroundings when I run), but I got this for my wife

It mixes the two channels of stereo output into one earbud so you hear all of your music, but always have one ear on your surroundings. It's also sweat proof.
I'd highly recommend it for anyone who likes to run with tunes.
I didn't look through too many comments so maybe someone beat me, but I have this solution to hearing music with one ear. I use it for work to hear the whole song without blocking out my boss and coworkers. The sound quality is pretty good too. I definitely recommend this for your situation.
Not saying this is a good idea, but these do exist.
