There are people in this life more organized than me. Part of me envies these people. The other part of me says, meh, too much effort. However, if you are more organized here is some of what I found:

A very thorough guide with lots of photos on how the snippets of yarn were stored. Binders of samples, created by a designer. I might try this actually....

Another less labor intensive version

Free printy things to get you started. I like these...might or might not use them.

My method of insanity: I have many totes. In each tote is only one brand of yarn. Totes are sorted by color families. In some totes, I never unballed my yarn and left it with the tags on. Not great for display, but at least my yarn is dust free, right? For yarns I have caked, I roll up the label like a little tube and pop it into the middle of the cake. Seems to work so far. I have thought about buying some yarn keys where you take off the tag, fold it up and attach to the ball/hank/skein/cake in question.

As I am now sitting here thinking about it, from a design and colorwork standpoint, the binders really are your best bet. The most work, but it would be nice to just pull out a few cards with samples on them and compare and make up a colorway without pulling out mounds of yarn. Also it might be possible to take a few samples with you shopping if you need more colors.
