Can you link which product you have there? Is it two separate strips that provide the different colors? Where is the strip attached on your setup? I have a similar stand but don't know if I should run the lights along the bottom, middle or top shelf.

This is the product I have https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LRT0B56/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09__o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I am in the process of using a cheap 5050 LED strip and wiring it into a nodeMCU wifi arduino board. This allows the hue and brightness to be changed via wifi from the nodeMCU webserver. Then you can use a home bridge plugin to control that via homekit.

LED Strip and nodeMCU tutorial

Homebridge plugin

All the parts for the 10m 5050 LED Strip and nodeMCU cost between $30-$40

Another alternative would be the Xiaomi YeeLight Strip, its also $30-$40 but only 2m.

It's much less hassle and there is a homebirdge plugin here

I recommend the Yeelight bulbs. I now have a bunch in my house since they are pretty inexpensive and do not require a hub. They work flawlessly with my Echo. They are $25 right now I believe and they were about $45 when I bought them so it's a steal.

Edit: I forgot to mention they have a White version where you can only adjust the temperature of the whiteness, they are cheaper. They also have RGB strips that work with Alexa, and flawlessly too.

I have a couple of Yeelight light strips behind the desk and monitors which are connected to a Xiaomi gateway and probably soon to a Home Assistant Box.

Xiaomi have these little motion sensors about the size of a cork that you can use to automatically turn the LED's on when you enter the room and off when you're away for X minutes.

Or you can just get the Yeelight strips and manually control them via the switch or phone app.

they are currently unviable and can't seem to find some that are not marked up. The app does a lot and has some decent features for the price of 39.99 CND.

Still significantly pricier in Canada, but the Yeelights are one of the cheaper options that support automation. Not sure about Smartthings specifically, but they work with Home Assistant at least. Looks like they can be had used for a reasonable price on Amazon.

I have used 3 different brands of LED strips and these are the cheapest and the best out of the ones that I have used. https://www.amazon.com/Sunnest-Waterproof-300leds-Flexible-Controller/dp/B07571JKPC/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1504672180&sr=8-6&keywords=sunnest+leds

I have been looking for something that I can control with Alexa and I am going to be buying these for my college crib, they seem like a nice cheaper alternative to Phillips Hue. I can't speak for the quality on these yet though.

The Yeelight strip does everything Hue does. Great price at $29.

If you want cheaper, there are "magic home" wifi controllers on eBay for about $7 into which you can plug super cheap eBay led strips

Check out the Yeelight wifi lightstrip. I just got one last week and integrated it with Home-Assistant, and it's pretty awesome.

I have it set to a dim backlight when I start Plex and then bright rotating colors when I stop/pause Plex.

Has a good app and works great with Google Home/Assistant, IFTTT, Alexa...

I have a Yeelight Smart RGB Bulb on the lamp behind the monitor too. It's so convenient to just tell Google what color and brightness you want the lamp and strip to be.

Yeelight strip

Lifx strip (still expensive but no hub required)

[More DIY option ](https://www.amazon.com/Nexlux-Wireless-Controlled-Waterproof-Assistant/dp/B072DXFKRH/
)

with the last option you can add extensions easily or right angle connections (if you want to do the back edge of the TV etc.
