There was a Catholic nun named Sr. Elaine Macinnes who was also a recognized Zen master. If the Church didn't give her the boot, then I think that Christianity and Buddhism are perfectly compatible. She wrote a wonderful book that you definitely should read.
EDIT: Also read Thomas Merton, who was basically re-stating the anonymous 14th century work "The Cloud of Unknowing", a central text of Christian mysticism.
