We went with a Purple mattress a few months ago. Tried to order one of their foundations to go with it but a month after ordering and receiving the mattress and at least another month wait for their foundation, we gave up and ordered this one from Amazon.

It pretty much just folds out of the box and you screw some nuts on to lock the two pieces together, couldn't be easier and has worked great, no squeaking or anything.

we got a new mattress from amazon. it came flattened and rolled in a tube. it was quite affordable (king size). best money i've ever spent. this is the mattress: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WZTVRG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

we put it on this frame: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TGHI56Y/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

easy to assemble, quiet, and plenty of room for storage underneath. it's not hard and not soft, it's perfect and it holds it's shape and is very comfortable. i'm also a side sleeper and i have chronic lower-back problems.

I don't have experience sleeping on a thin mattress on the floor, but we have a latex foam mattress with a zippered casing that can be cleaned (not at home) or replaced if ever needed. We've had this mattress for about 7 years and it seems like it could last forever. Even if the softest layer of foam eventually broke down, we could easily replace just that layer with a new one. My only "regret" is that I bought the most expensive model with 4 layers of foam. I now know I really didn't need 4 layers and maybe wouldn't have needed more than 2. It was fairly expensive but not absurdly so ($2500), but if it lasts my lifetime, then that seems like a deal. Came with 2 pillows too.

ETA: we have it on an inexpensive metal slat frame I bought on Amazon.
