> Have you used something like the Ubiquiti before?

I used this to extend the range of my wifi from the house out about 120 feet to a guest house. But I can't recommend that for beginners, the setup is confusing as fuck and documentation is just horrible. What the docs do say is often confusing, and sometimes they doesn't even tell you what you need to know. The thing does work amazingly well once you get it set up, but the climb to get it working correctly is a week-long exercise in hitting your head on a brick wall.

Anyway, if I were you I'd buy a cheap ethernet hub^1 and put THAT in the basement. It will act as a central repeater for your wired ethernet connections. Which will allow you to take the Linksys upstairs. And since there's already network connections up there, you won't even have to run a separate cable for the Linksys. Just plug it in to a live ethernet that's already up there.

^1 I lied. I would buy this. But that could be overkill for your porpoises. Any four port ethernet hub, even the shittiest cheapest pile of crap one you can buy at Be(a)st Buy, will probably work fine for you.

I found this which should let him do what he wants to do. It's $50, but it's probably a more elegant solution than using Internet Connection Sharing from a wifi enabled computer, unless he's got a desktop that's always on.

Yeah that would be fine, but do you need the four ports?

If not you could just buy something like this and save money.

If you don't need the ports and are looking for something subtle you could get one of these

Also I'd like to stress I'm not endorsing either product, I just picked quick examples.

But yes, that is fine.
