Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Instead of holding your dremel by hand, toss it into your hobby vise. This gives you greater control over how much material you remove and where.

  2. Using the utility blade to give you a starting point to make a transition is a good idea, but it isn't easy to get a positive grip on the spinning brass. It can and does slip. A razor saw is ideal for this and you can make some nice serrations with it too.

  3. I too have experienced running out of room on the pin because it is too close to the chuck. When you are that close, you can only make an outward bevel because the second you try to tip it in, you start filing down the chuck instead. Using old pins is a great way to level up on your technique. You can pick up some brass rod stock and cut each one into 3rds and backup the rod into the dremel as far as it goes and that will stabilize the brass and give you plenty of material to pull out and away from the chuck.

  4. The quick change dremel chuck works great when you have a bunch of different sized bits to change out. However, on brass it tends to leave unwanted dents with the three prongs. The dremel collet set will not leave those marks. It is a cheap set and it is made from aluminum but I haven't had one break on me yet.

I love, Love, LOVE jewelry files for shaping my pins! You can futz around with the different shapes to get some cool transitions. To polish off my pins and when I want to remove burrs from the final shapes, I cut my sandpaper into strips and glued it onto a popsicle stick. This lets me get up in there and also works great when you just need to remove a little more material. You can also wrap a little of the sandpaper over the edge and use that outside corner to push into the brass to make a tight inside corner on the brass. Here is a preview of some of the evil.

This post is specifically about the HF 44991 mill.

I just got into milling and purchased the 44991 mill from Harbor freight. The 44991 is just a re-branded Sieg X2. They are not amazing mills, but they do work, there are also lots of after market mods that can really enhance the machine and make it more capable.

The First upgrade I would do is the Belt drive conversion. The nylon gears get destroyed pretty easily. Little Machine Shop is running a sale on their belt drive this week.

The second is the iGaging DRO upgrade available on amazon or from Anytime Tools.

The 3rd upgrade is the Z axis Air spring conversion. It extends your Z-axis range a LOT and it is much smoother and easier to control. The included torsion spring is cumbersome.

The 4th is not so much a modification, but the included drill press chuck is not great. I recommend a good set of R8 collets.

try these

Make sure to disassemble and clean all of the grease out of the machine. Tighten up everything really nicely upon reassembly and you'll have a nicer machine than any of the Sieg X2 re-brands you can buy pre-built.

I have this tool. It has a speed control, so I turn it to slow (ish) for drilling. It has a flex shaft so you can hold the tool end a bit more like a pencil or brush when working. I've used it for cutting and sanding/filing as well as drilling.

I had to buy some extra collets to hold my smaller drill bits.

I will say however that most of what I use it on are metal models (I'm an old-hammerer) and like others have said a hand turned drill may be fine on plastics.

Make sure the collet matches the tool too. I bought a cheap set like this on Amazon and a spare nut. I keep the one nut on the 1/8" collet and one on the 1/4" collet and very rarely use any other diameter

Are you using Tamiya's Handy Drill? If so, I got Dremel's 1/32 collet, and then put some masking tape in the base so it fits the drill. For the smallest drill bit I also covered in masking tape so the collet can grab it. I hope it makes sense

I have this adapter, and I havent had a single issue yet. I know it's not super fancy or anything like what you use. But for the work I do, This allows me to use 3/8" dia endmills just fine, I prefer this over the 3/8" collet/nut combo porter cable sells, cause this has more surface area evenly gripping the fem verses just a small ring gripping it.

BTW. The dremel I used was not expensive at all. Make sure you get some collets though

u/KirbyG · 2 pointsr/woodworking

Under $50, maybe cheaper if you can find it.

Google "router collet extension" and there are loads of them. I got this one but from a local store for about $30CDN.

I’m not sure, but maybe they’re using one of these?

Routers do have quick change collets:

So...you're telling me the people saying my CNC "Router" isn't a "Mill" are just mad because they paid more?
