(Part 2) Reddit mentions: The best safety & security products

How loose/tight-fitting is your clothing, and how much do your pockets show beneath your shirt? That's going to affect how large the light can be before you or others notice it. For some people and their style of dress, a light that runs on an 18650 battery wouldn't be noticeable, while others would need a AA or even AAA sized light.

AAA/10440 Lights

If you're interested in not having the light visibly print in your pocket at all, like I was in choosing an EDC, and your clothes are relatively slim fitting, you're probably going to want a AAA/10440 sized light (10440 is the lithium ion version of a AAA sized battery, and produces brighter output but less runtime than a typical AAA alkaline, NiMH, or lithium primary battery).

I went with the Folomov EDC C1. It's got a coated brass body, warm light, and very high CRI (meaning it helps show colors better than low CRI lights). It clips tightly inside the front pocket or coin pocket and takes up very little space. I've been very much enjoying mine without issue, though others have had quality control issues where the emitter burnt out or developed a dead spot, so unless those issues are sorted out, your mileage may vary.

If you want something in the AAA size specifically from Amazon, the Ultratac K18 would probably serve you quite well.

AA/14500 Lights

If you're willing to go up to AA/14500 sized light, the Thrunite Archer 1A V3 might be a good choice. Runs on either AA or 14500 battery. Has a sub-lumen firefly mode for preserving night vision, and goes up to 200 lumens with a AA battery. I don't know how much brighter it would be with a 14500 battery, but you can typically expect two to three times brighter, though with shorter run times. 200 lumens is typically enough for most tasks, though you might appreciate the extra brightness if you were looking around outdoors.

18650 Lights

If you're willing to go up to an 18650 sized light, the Thrunite TC15 would likely be a great choice. It gets incredibly bright for a 1x 18650 light, at up to 2300 lumens, but has well spaced lower modes for everyday use as well. It looks like currently only the cool white version is available on Amazon it. Most people, myself included, prefer neutral to warm white because it looks better, and produces less backscatter in particulates in the air.

I think a little more information about your intended use of the light and how you'd like to carry it would help us make good recommendations. Good luck on the search!

EDIT: Also, another user asked a good question about what you mean by "rechargeable." Do you mean that you just plug the light in without taking the battery out, or do you mean the battery is rechargeable and you can put it in a charger? There are plenty of excellent chargers at places like illumn.com that will open up a whole new realm of possibilities for flashlights, so the small up-front investment is usually worth it.

Based on my experience with the NeoAir Xtherm, I'd be a bit sketched out about using a NeoAir Xtherm or Xlite for a lengthy thru-hike. Mine started to leak air significantly after only a handful of uses, in such a way that it was impossible for me to repair it (even after getting out of the field). Fortunately, Cascade Designs replaced it for free, but mine is now reserved only for the trips that I really need that added warmth on to keep the wear and tear of the pad to a minimum. Perhaps someone who has carried a NeoAir on a thru-hike (or a lengthy section hike) can chime in, but again, I'd be hesitant to carry one myself on a longer trip.

I agree with /u/AussieEquiv that a 30 degree bag may or may not be sufficient, depending on the timing of your thru especially. Some details on when you plan to depart would be helpful, but I suspect in any case that you might want to consider at least carrying a liner- that way you can send it home once things have warmed up enough that you won't need it. Based on my experiences hiking Georgia in early spring, a 30 degree bag by itself would be a bit cold on at least some nights until some time in April. And even if you start in GA late, you may not finish in ME until late Summer/early Autumn, and accordingly you may still find that the 30 degree bag isn't warm enough in the northeast towards the end of your hike.

Similarly, I also agree with the comment about a thermal top in addition to the leggings. You'll likely be glad to have a full set of long underwear on at least some nights early into your thru-hike. I see you're planning on getting a light puffy which is good, but a light thermal top will be more comfortable for sleeping in.

And again, on another similar note, I would at least consider a hat liner and glove liners for occasional cold weather as well.

And yes, definitely ditch the town clothes (especially since they weigh nearly a pound). A spare t-shirt, underwear, and socks are OK, but you can otherwise just your cleanest hiking clothes (even if that includes your rain gear) while the rest are in the laundry.

I might suggest also carrying a pair of pants in addition to shorts- perhaps look into zipoff/convertible pants to keep weight down. You'll be glad to have pants on colder days, when hiking in grassy areas with ticks, etc.

Was the decision not to carry rain pants a conscious one? If so, what was the rationale behind it? Are you OK with soaking wet pants/shorts at the end of the day (and having to put those same soaking wet pants/shorts on the next morning)? I don't always bother with putting on rain gear myself when the weather is particularly warm (on hot and humid days you sweat just as much under it as you would get wet from the rain without it), but for a longer hike I think it's probably a good idea to have a full rain suit. You will have some cold, rainy days during which I think you'd be glad to have rain pants during in addition to a jacket.

I think if you have a spork with shallow fork tongs it will be OK. Something like the Sea to Summit Titanium Utensil Spork will be fine. Or you might look at the Light My Fire Titanium Spork, which has a fork/knife combo at the opposite end of the spoon (I'm a huge fan of this one, personally).

What is your budget?

<$20: a good book on caving, or some batteries. Lithium AA/AAA if they don't like rechargeables, AA/AAA NiMH if they do. I've had good luck with the brand Tenergy, which is sold in bulk by AllBattery.com. They're basically cheap Chinese imports but their QA is decent. (Source: I'm a professional photographer who's used them for years.) Go for the 2,500 mAh capacity. You might also consider a decent charger. More on that shortly.

<$50: One of the best chargers on the market is this bad boy, but it's somewhat expensive and only charges 4 cells at once. However, it charges them safely (not overcharging, not charging too fast, etc, which limits long-term life), can identify bad cells, and can charge almost any cylindrical battery out there, including the far superior 18650 cell, which is important for a good headlamp or flashlight. For a good headlamp, consider the ThruNite TH10 in neutral white for $40, or the same headlamp with a battery for $15 more. Note: this light doesn't use AA/AAA batteries; it uses the 18650 battery, which is slightly larger but 4 times the capacity of an AA battery and is able to discharge power fast enough to support amazingly bright lights. Every light I'm linking here supports multiple brightness modes, with a maximum brightness around 1,000 lumens, i.e. as bright as your car's headlights. They also drop to between 0.4 lumens and 1 lumen at their lowest setting, which will last for up to 70-ish days. Yes, really. That's a nice feature to have in a cave.

<$100: A good headlamp/flashlight. Most cavers I know are old-school when it comes to flashlights because they aren't aware of some of the incredible LED and battery innovations that have occured. Most of their headlamps are either small and underpowered or huge and bulky and... still underpowered sometimes. I'd recommend a ThruNite TC-12 v2 in neutral white. It also uses an 18650 battery. The light bundle I linked includes one battery and the light is USB chargable, though that charger I linked earlier will charge the battery faster.

You can add a helmet strap if you know they use a helmet. If you're looking for a headlamp instead of a flashlight, consider the ThruNite TH10 I linked earlier or the Nitecore HC30 in neutral white which is slightly more expensive. Nitecore and ThruNite are fairly similar, though in my opinion Nitecore looks more "tactical" while ThruNite's electronics are slightly better. Both are good companies, however.

<$150: If you decide to get a light and extra batteries, don't get any battery with a brand containing the word "fire". (Those brands are known for lying about the capacities and being fire risks.) I'd recommend a 4-pack of KeepPower 3,400 mAh 18650 batteries if you're going for that kind of batteries as they're a good brand and I own them myself.

Some other considerations: a nice base layer, i.e. thermal underwear. I'd strongly recommend merino wool as it's thin, light, and warm even when it's wet. Cost: $50-$100 per item for a top or bottom/long johns. And they'll always have a warm, fuzzy feeling when they think of you. ;-)

I wouldn't go for quite the same size. There's not much point to the length, and the weight makes it unwieldy. The thickness is good though. We have what we call soda can lights because they're about the size of a soda can, and I think you'll like that size.

The BLF Q8 sells for around $50. It's a great light. It costs more on Amazon right now, but occasionally it goes on sale. I'll warn that this light was created to work very well in ways that you can't see without taking it apart, and to avoid other lights that look the same because they took a lot of shortcuts that make them perform horribly that can't be fixed without spending more than it would cost to buy a Q8. There's also a Sofirn version of the Q8 that's legit, but it has a colder tint that I recommend against if you want to see rattlers.

The next light I'd look at is the Emisar D18. It's a little skinnier, and twice as expensive, but twice as bright. The best thing about it is the LED options. I've found that rattlers are easier to see with a light that has a slightly rosy tint, so I'd get warm white 3000K LED's. That one also has great CRI, so things will look more natural. I think the D18 would be a better match for you than the Q8.

You'll need batteries and a charger, and you'll need to be careful where you buy batteries. The type of battery you get is a big deal too. The "30Q" is a solid battery. Mtn Electronics is a safe source, and he lists some other batteries that will work at the bottom of the page. Illumn is also a good source. Note that these are button tops. You can find cheaper batteries elsewhere, but they will probably be flat tops that may not make a solid electrical connection.

These two lights will blow you away. They're also side clickies like the Maglite. Honestly, if you've only used that Maglite, then you'll probably be very happy with this Wowtac A1S that only costs $26, and it comes with a battery that can be charged via usb. Make sure you buy the NW version.

I've mentioned tint a couple of times. Even if you don't buy any of these lights, you should pay attention to the tint. Avoid cold white lights. Those are about 6000K or higher. A neutral tint (4000K to 5000K) should be okay. Warm white is around 3000K or lower, and makes the colors on a rattler pop more.

Here's some simplistically delivered advice, all of them are things I tried, and while each one isn't a "complete" solution, combined together they will accumulate and help overall:

2. Sleep on the sofa once or twice a week, with good ear plugs, so you are not woken up by the baby.
   
   
3. Understand that babies will cry for tons of reasons. Even a it of gas in their intestines will make them cry. We are programmed to be really bothered by another person crying, but you need to re-adjust your perception about crying. Imagine the baby is an alien and this is simply how the alien says "hello".
   
   
4. They sleep longer once you introduce solids, and after that, it gets much easier overall after 10~12 months.
   
   
5. We put this butterfly plush toy next to baby's head near the changing pad, so he has something to look at while we change his diaper. It isn't 100% guaranteed to work, but even 1 out of 10 is better than 0 out of 10.
   
   
6. When the baby seems to cry for no reason whatsoever, they can be over-tired, and they don't know how to put themselves back to sleep. Sometimes I will simply lift my baby up in the air and hold him way up there for 1~2 seconds, then down again to face level, and plant a kiss on his nose. Lift him up again, and down again. This seems to calm him down, and lately he actually switches from crying to laughing (I guess he loves being raised high up in the air like that). You need to fight the instinct to behave more abrupt/fast with them, reverse it instead, when they cry just be compassionate and merciful, be slower and even more gentle, hold them gently and walk. Babies love that feeling of being carried and your steps seem to have a calming effect on them.
   
   
7. Get a yoga ball, hold them gently in a sleeping position, and bounce on the ball. Try different speeds and heights. Be careful not to fall back with the baby. Works like magic for us!
   
   
8. Focus on taking care of yourself, your physical needs, your mental needs, and communicate those needs with your wife. Every person is different, and needs different amounts of sleep, fun, sex, food, social interaction, walking outside to breath fresh air, etc. Just discuss this with your wife and I guarantee she can help you out more than you think!
   
   
9. DO NOT hate on yourself. I clearly remember with my first child this dark thought of literally throwing her out of the window. I did not sleep for 3 days, I was hungry, thirsty, my head was exploding because I had the flu, I didn't have sex for 6 month+, and I just had about enough of the whole thing. But then you look at that baby and you realize they depend on you for everything, they are absolutely helpless, and you need to practice squeezing the love out of you for that little being :-) I find this is a great skill to master regardless of your baby, it comes in handy when dealing with obnoxious people in general, at work, with family or with society at large.

There is a recommendation form in the sidebar we often ask people to fill out and make a top-level post, a lot of us enjoy helping match people to lights. It has info about size, use case, budget, etc.

I don’t know what your budget is, but for size I’m going to recommend a light that uses a single 18650 size rechargeable lithium battery. It’s a nice size to hold in the hand, and the batteries are a really good balance of size to power. They get about 500 recharge cycles, usually cost about $5, and hold the equivalent energy of 5 AA or 8 AAA cells. Since I don’t expect you to have any of these batteries, I’ll give you three good options that include them, and everything you need to run the light.


The cheapest good light that includes a battery is a Wowtac A1s. It’s probably the most-recommended beginner light on here and would serve you quite well. It comes with a special battery that has a micro-usb port built directly in. I don’t know how you could beat it for $26.

A couple dollars more gets you a Sofirn SP32. It has a good user interface with a single side e-switch (which makes it shorter, compared to the Wowtac with its tailswitch) illuminated switch to find it in the dark, and is currently on sale to bring it down to your price point. It uses a more traditional style of battery with an external charger.

For a bit of an upgrade, the Thrunite Neutron 2C is a good value. It has a built-in charging port so you never have to touch the battery, and a nice ramping interface, where instead of set light levels it increases or decreases until you get exactly how much you want.

Alright, that at least gives us a little more information. Seems that you want a light for general lumen cannon work, right? Something with a big battery and a large head that can light things up for as far as you need to see?

I like recommending Convoy lights due to their quality for their cost. The L2 will carry very similarly to your Maglite, with its wide and robust head and long handle. The one I linked has a CREE XHP50.2, which is a larger LED that should give you a ton of light out the front in a decently wide area while maintaining good throw (in case someone makes a run for it). These should slot well into a Maglite ring holster and hang from your belt. The L2 can run on either one or two 18650 or 26650 cells (the latter are recommended for their capacity and better fitment) and you will get plenty of runtime out of it provided you don't use Turbo all night. If you go for this, I am a big fan of the 4000K color temperature range, though others may chime in with different opinions.

Convoy also makes a decent holster for their C8-style lights, and so I will suggest the Luminus SST-40 version of their C8+. The C8-style chassis has been around forever, so new bits and mods are available for super cheap. Like the XHP50.2, the SST-40 is a larger and floodier LED. In order to make this a better general-purpose light, you might want to drop an orange peel reflector into this guy. It'll take one 18650 cell, but backups are easy to carry and swap in the field.

In the event you want something smaller I am a fan of dual-switch 18650 lights. The Wowtac A1S BSS v2 has been in my pocket for a year now and never let me down. The interface is awesome - you can adjust modes using the side button when the light is on, or a quick double tap on the tail switch from off takes you right to turbo. Super handy when you need a lot of light quickly. I cannot suggest a holster for this outright, although I am certain Streamlight or Fenix will make a holster that will fit it brilliantly.

In that vein, the Fenix PD35 and Streamlight ProTac 2L-X are both of similar size and very popular with law enforcement, but for far more than the Wowtac.

The light is the SP31 V2.0 with XP-L HI in neutral white

First off the packaging is fairly basic. It was a simple Sofirn box without many markings on it to even indicate what kind of light was inside. They just reuse similar packaging across their lights which is fine. I got the combo that includes a battery + 1 bay charger. Came with an instruction manual and fairly standard lanyard, nothing special here.

Next to my smaller 18650 lights such as the Emisar D4 or Jaxman E2L it seems kinda big, but after a day of carrying it there's no issue. I would like to take this moment to praise Sofirn's pocket clip. I personally strongly detest the "deep carry" pocket clips on lights such as the BLF A6 and prefer a simple more robust clip like Sofirn uses that doesn't raise up passed the tailcap. Something about this light that REALLY bugs me is the tailswitch protrudes beyond the lanyard bumps which WILL NOT allow it to tail stand. If you find yourself tailstanding your lights a lot, this may not be for you and is honestly the largest fault I have physically with this light.

Now on to usability and functionality. I really like the forward-clicky switch.I can definitely see why people prefer these. It's very easy to just soft hold it down when you only need a brief burst of light vs needing to fully depress a typical switch. It's honestly not a big deal, but for convenience sake if you're often only using a light to read or check things in short bursts I would recommend a forward clicky. This light has a secondary electronic towards the front and that's solely for changing modes. I also underestimated how nice it is to always have the light turn on at the same brightness I last used, no surprises, just consistency. You can find a brightness you prefer and just only use that. It's simple click to cycle through modes 1-5 then long-press to access strobe/SOS. My only gripe is there is no shortcut to turbo or the lowest mode. The modes also cycle with a fast smooth ramp which is pleasant.

Next is brightness and my thoughts on beam shape. I clocked the light in at level 1(7), level 2(53), level 3(151), level 4(477), level 5(985). This is mostly in-line with what Sofirn claims except for the max brightness of 1200 lumens that they tout. I tested on their own included cell at max brightness and even a Sony VTC5, but wasn't able to crack 1,000 lumens in my tests. As far as throw I can only really speak relative to my other lights and it's certainly throwier than a stock BLF A6 with OP reflector by about 25%~. I was also surprised it out throws Sofirn's own SF36W which has a sizably large reflector(but with XP-L not XP-L HI). The light is definitely throwier than I thought it would be for such a small reflector. You won't be breaking any records, but the hotspot is tight and the spill isn't extremely bright so you could use this to point out things or focus on objects at distances within 65ft/20M. As for tint it's not offensively cool at all, but is a bit cooler than I personally prefer. The positive is that with the XP=L HI there is very little tint shift so it's evenly white lacking an "egg-yolk" corona that I see with a lot of XP-L lights.

Runtimes.. I don't really have much to say here. The max-level stepdown is timed, but there is also mention of thermal sensing? After around 3 minutes at step down the head of the light was only 112F/44C and was still very holdable. It continued at this level for a little over 2 hours until it dropped down briefly before dropping again twice in 20min intervals. The light's indicator LED in the e-switch was full red indicating voltage was low and the output was quite low so I ended the test woth the cell at 3.06 volts. The red indicator turns on below 3.1V and shuts the light off entirely at 3V says the manual.

As per usual I tested the waterproofness lightly. I submerged the light in a little over 1ft/30cm of water for 2 hours exactly and there were no issues this time around. The head seems sealed/glued and I cannot get into it which probably adds to the waterproofness. The o-rings came lubed well and stopped all water ingress. There was no problem with the e-switch either. The only possible problem might be water sneaking around the tail switch boot, but I took a look inside and it was still dry. It passed my test no problem.

My brief thoughts on the charger... It works. Charges around what seems to be 0.5A with a standard micro USB jack. The cell voltage read 4.15V at completion which is good with me. Much rather slightly undercharge than overcharge and damage a cell's life.

Final thoughts... I can see why a lot of people like the forward clicky + e-switch combination. It's very predictable and you don't have to worry about accessing random turbo or strobes. I'm not a big fan of throwers, but the XP-L HI provides very little tint shift and solid throw in a small package. The numbers I tested at max brightness are a little off, but those extra 200 lumens are negligible in my opinion and the light is more than capable at medium ranges even on levels 3 or 4. I really wish the light could tailstand correctly I'm not sure if forward clicky switches are just larger and that wasn't taken into account, or perhaps the switch boot is just too thick where it depresses the switch. Overall if you're looking for a basic starter light with a no-frills predictable modeset, compact throw, and comes with a battery/charger to start an 18650 eco system I'd definitely recommend this light.

Some people have some good information here but I'll throw my 2 cents in anyways.

Flashlights are no better for self defense than sturdy sticks - it's not what they were designed for. Some companies put 'tacticool' strike bezels on their flashlights, like the Wowtac A1S BSS TAC, but it's kind of ridiculous. If you really need to defend yourself, pepper spray will do a much better job as long as it's legal where you live.

18650 pushes what can fit in a standard pocket, unless you're wearing cargo pants. Most lights using these batteries have a good amount of heft already, so I'd strongly recommend trying one of the single battery recommendations in this thread.

>Somewhat waterproof

As previously stated by others, zooming lights suck at being waterproof and add a lot of weight. They aren't our favorite around here.

>Adjustable high power beam

Even though most lights recommended here don't zoom, the brightness is adjustable. Lower moonlight modes are perfect for tasks that are close up and indoor use without waking anyone, and high modes throw a long way.

>Minimal spill

Spill is a good thing in a lot of cases. When I go hiking at night, the hotspot shines far down the path and the spill illuminates at my feet so I don't trip and to the sides so I still have some peripheral vision. Perfect for watching out for those rogue raccoons.

RECOMMENDATION

The first 18650 light I got, based on a recommendation here, was the Astrolux S1. It's way under your budget, throws quite far for it's size, and has a really solid build. It's waterproof, and if you absolutely insist on bludgeoning someone with it I'm sure it will hurt. Most people prefer the 3D tint option, which is a neutral tint that's not too warm or too cool. Here is a beamshot to give you an idea of the throw and spill from this light. It doesn't have built in charging, but that really helps keep it waterproof. If you pick up two 18650s, they will easily last you a weekend camping trip even with extremely liberal use.

This is a great tube light to start off with. I find it perfect for hiking, and it has given me an idea of how high-performance lights work and what I want/don't want in my next lights.

I'd suggest getting a single AA light as a backup. I recently picked up the Thrunite T10 and have been quite pleased with it.

Someone mentioned a bunch of 90 headlamps which all of those are great but don't have built-in charging. Is built-in charging a must?

The Klarus AR10 seems like you're best option technically because of the 90 swivel head and built-in charging but the modes really suck on it. No Moonlight mode and the 10 lumens to 150 lumens is a huge jump. I would easily suggest any of those other non-rechargeable headlamps over this light. Sure you'll need to bring an extra battery but technically those headlamps are half the weight of the AR10 if it means anything.

The advantage of those headlamps are the better modes. The HC30 has 5 excellently spaced modes and can be had for $50. The Wizard has a few additional modes and a lower low and great durability. And the H600Fd has even more amazing modes on it with excellent Firefly modes and enough levels of output for every situation (durability is also excellent). I do have experience with all three of these headlamps which I ended up sticking with the H600Fd because of the excellent modes. Let me know if you have any questions.

Finally a topic I'm passionate about!

I don't have a specific answer for you, but that's because I have a lot of experience with ear plugs, and I know taste and fit will vary immensely from person to person.

Unfortunately, that means the best advice I can give you is try a whole bunch of different ear plugs, and see which ones fit best and work best for your purposes.

Judging from my experience, I'm certain you're going to need more than one type of earplug.

A bunch of tips:

3. They make smaller women's and slim fit earplugs. I'm a fairly large man, and they don't fit me perfectly, but if I just want to take the edge off of the ambient sound, I use them. They muffle everything, but not to the same degree as my regular sized earplugs. That may not be an option for you depending on the size of your ears, but it's an option for some.
   
   
4. For music and movies, I've tried Downbeats, but they don't fit me very well. You may have more luck, and there are other brands worth considering. Search for earplugs for musicians. They preserve the full range of audio frequencies, but just lower the volume. (Regular earplugs will tend to block out some frequencies more than others.)

7. Those single use disposable earplugs -- you can use them more than once, but they do lose some of their blocking power. (Depending on the situation, this might be an advantage.) But once they get a little too soft and squishy, they're done.
   
   
8. I often wear earplugs almost all day like you're planning. And I sleep with them every night too. That's doable, but do take them out for a decent amount of time each day. If they are in too long, even your favorite earplugs can become irritating. (And I know some people do have allergies to certain earplug materials.)

That's pretty vague, so I'll just recommend the ThruNite T10. It's well built, made by a reputable company, and probably bright enough for whatever you need it for. It won't be able to achieve maximum brightness without using rechargeable Ni-MH AAs or lithium AAs. Those two types of batteries also have the advantage of not leaking and ruining your flashlight. Eneloops are the favorite brand around here, but the Ni-MH AAs by the big brands are all pretty similar.

If you're comfortable buying a light that uses a (included) lithium ion battery, the Atactical A1 and A1S are good budget models. They both come with batteries. The difference is that the A1S is a bit brighter and comes with a higher capacity battery.

The best light that I can think of in that price range is the ThruNite Neutron 2C V3. It also comes with a battery, and it can charge it without removing the battery. It has a ramping UI. ThruNite is having a 20% off sale on their website, so if you enter that coupon code the price will go down to $40. I suggest the neutral white tint.

Amazon is helpful here. I would advise getting two things: a reliable, bright flashlight, and strong pepper gel.

These are only particulate filters so if you do a lot of painting the set from home depot with the VOC filters would be better.

I backpacked through Russia and China a few years back, and due to the different terrains encountered I had to pack quite a heavy bag (I think my total was almost 17kgs and I hadn't brought anything obviously unnecessary even if it felt that way).

I think you should bring:

1. A spork, preferably a metal spork like this one because it will not break in your bag.
   
   
2. Microfibre towel and maybe a small set of bed linens, you never know about quality in some places.
   
   
3. A small knife or multitool, I'm not going to debate which one because there are loads of them but pretty much any swiss army knife or multitool will do the job good enough for you, and then it's a question about style. I prefer either the victorinox issued to the bundeswehr or a leatherman skeletool, but that's just me.
   
   
4. Painkillers, like acetaminophen.
   
   
5. Flashligt, honestly I always bring a maglite but there is better options out there.
   
   
6. Chargers, I slimmed down a lot in that area for my trip, with my regular cables weighting in at almost 1kg. But make sure to bring what you need to charge in the locations you'll be, and a battery pack.
   
   
7. Shaving utensils. Seriously, you don't want to shave with a one use shaver in the middle of nowhere. Probably included in toiletries.
   
   
8. A bottle for water, hot or cold alike, like a 500mL nalgene bottle or something you can fill with whatever. If going through China you'll routinely get only hot water, remember that.
   
   
9. A few packs of dried frozen food, it's cheap and easy to come by in Australia, and ensured you'll have food in the middle of nowhere. Maybe 1-3 packs depending on your travel (again, if actually going through China you can restock with noodles along the way so bring fewer).
   
   
10. A first aid kit. What you'll probably need is alcohol wipes and band aides, everything else is in case of. Depending on what you're going to do that may include a lot of things or fewer things, but a small kit is a good idea. Depending on where you're going and your ability to eat different types of food I may also add oral rehydration therapy. Again cheap to get and if you'll need it you'll be happy you brought it. It's also a PITA to explain in a foreign language what you want.
    
    
11. A small watertight bag big enough for your electronics. It does rain a lot in some places.
    
    There was another poster /u/flyinglotus1983 who'd had problems finding deodorant and similar items in China, that wasn't an issue for me but it does require some adaptions, so it's easier to bring but still a PITA. I didn't bring a computer, I simply brought my iPhone and iPad, you if I were you I'd consider if you need a computer. If you don't that's a lot of weight you can save.
    
    I would however suggest an e-book reader. Books are heavy and I had loads of time on trains and on busses with nothing to do but read. I read more books in those months that I did in the 2 years prior. It will set you back $100, but in my opinion it's a well worth investment.

A few other suggestions, of varying cost and practicality:

• Contact the police and make a report. Don't mention the sex work, just say he contacted you through a social networking site. Keep a diary of every encounter. Save his messages, voicemail, letters. Likewise, tell people you trust what is going on. Ask them to keep a diary. You want to establish a paper trail, so that if you ever need to defend yourself against him, you aren't the one who gets convicted of assault.
  
  
• Submit the guys name and contact info to the blacklists at SafeOffice.com, uglymugs, and ourlist.nl. This won't really help you defend against him, but it may be satisfying to know that you're helping to prevent him from doing the same to someone else.
  
  
• Team up with some other sex workers in your area. Install the Cell 411 app, so you can alert each other if a client goes nuts on you.
  
  
• Befriend your neighbors. Invite them over for a dinner party or two. If you're attacked, you want to be able to escape to a friendly place.
  
  
• Consider taking a model mugging class, where you can practice-- with full force--what to do if you are attacked.
  
  
• If you ever see him in public, start screaming at the top of your lungs "Help me! Help me! This man is going to attack me! Help me!" while pointing your fingers at him. Set off a personal alarm. This will draw attention to him, which will hopefully embarrass him, and cause him to leave the scene.
  
  
• Walk through your daily routine, and identify places where you would be vulnerable to attack: public garages, unlighted streets, subway. Plan out what you would do in each location. Which shops are nearby? What are their hours? Where you can you hide? Where dead-ends/traps to avoid?
  
  
• Stop by the shops in your neighborhood, and show them a picture of the guy (if you have one). Tell them that he's been stalking you and ask them to let you know if they see him in the shop.
  
  
• Seek out your local SWOP chapter and befriend other sex workers. Ask how they deal with stalkers. Social support from people who understand what you're going through will help boost your mood, and reduce your anxiety.
  
  
• Ask a friend to stay with you until this blows over.
  
  
• Consider going on tour. If you have friends and relatives in other cities, ask them if you can stay with them until he gives up.
  
  
• Get a roommate. Get multiple roommates.
  
  
• If you have few ties to your current city, consider moving to another city.
  
  
• Get an intimidating dog, like a German Shephard or Rottweiler.
  
  
• Move to an apartment with a doorman and a gated entry.
  
  
• Hire a driver to take you to appointments. Avoid public transit--take Uber or Lyft instead.
  
  
• Start a program of weight training. Build up your muscle and strength. Not only will this increase your ability to defend itself, it will boost your mood, reduce anxiety, and keep you fit.
  
  
• Keep a tactical flashlight in your car, your purse, bed, and door. Use it to blind a would-be assailant. Practice using it as a baton to strike an assailant.
  
  
• Carry a baseball bat/defensive cane in your car. Practice swinging it with full force against a would-be assailant.
  
  
• Carry bear spray. Buy several cans, and practice using them.
  
  
• If you live in a state where you can do so, get a concealed carry permit and a handgun, and learn how to use it.
  
  
• Beef up the frame, lock, and strike plate on your door, so it can't be easily bashed in. Install bars/security screens on your windows.
  
  
• Install a visual doorbell, so you can see who is at your door, before answering, or getting close to the door.
  
  
• Install security cameras around your house / apartment. Install motion sensors.
  
  
• Hire a detective to create a dossier on him. Find out where he lives and works. Find out his vehicle license plate number. Find out if he has children, a wife, a mother. Have a heavily tattooed, tall, burly guy deliver the dossier to him at his office, and ask him ever so kindly not to contact you again.
  
  
  

Well if you want something nice, small, great color rendition(and common battery option of AAA), the Tool with Nichia emmiter is hard to beat for roughly $20.

If you want part of what we consider the battery master-class, an 18650 Lithium ion setup (effectively most bang for your buck capacity/ power-wise), the Thrunite TC12 is a good entrance to "real lights".

The reigning champs are the Zebralight SC63w, and the Armytek Wizard XHP, but a whole setup with those two including batteries and chargers is more like $120, but I think well worth it.

For an aesthetically pleasing and small light, I'd recommend the ReyLight Pineapple.

A beautiful brass light that takes either standard AA's or rechargeable 14500's if you want higher output. High CRI out of the Nichia LED, and isn't too big. Most people will recommend that you get an 18650 light (and so would I honestly) but a lot of new people to the flashlight world don't want to have to get a light with special batteries or one that is as large as an 18650 light.

If you want a buy once/cry once option, there is the Zebralight Sc64w which is pretty much the smallest 18650 light on the market, and practically the best. But then you'll need at least 2 batteries and a charger, so factor that cost in.

In-ear buds work best, and you can listen to music, a white noise generator, or maybe audiobooks.
   
   The above tip has worked so well for me that I almost forget I'm misophonic most of the time. Sometimes, though, my new boss likes to pop over to my desk, and there's a new Tier 4 Sniffler near me. To get over this, I've tried to have meetings in closed offices or whatnot to avoid that. I've debated leaving a note at the Sniffle King's desk secretly... We'll see about that, though. It's hard to time.
   
   You may also wonder - how can I get away with the earmuffs? Push for it. I've had people make fun of me for them, but I say "Oh, yeah, I swear by them - they really push up my productivity" and mention I'm an audiophile if people ask. I've established a reputation as a bit of a quirky guy. I don't care - these things help me so much that I'd take that any day. Phrase it in terms of things your office would select for. I work in a place that's all about productivity, so I use the productivity line to communicate this to others.
   
   Here's the last thing - I've noticed that people who sniffle/chew a lot tend to be either from certain regional cultures (generally East Asian or South Asian) or American subcultures (ie. college athletes - always sniffling for some reason!). I know some peers of mine of East Asian descent have gotten heavy feedback from bosses about sniffling too much in client meetings. You can maybe make a case to a boss that the noises your coworker makes could be bad in client-facing settings - or say that the loud chewing has annoyed a whole group of people.
   
   I hope that helps. I know how rough this can be, but with a bit of prevention this can be really ameliorated.

I was molested too. I have PTSD, OCD, and autism. Loud noises are the bane of my existence. When I'm startled, it takes me hours to weeks to recover.

These block out everything, including very sharp or low-frequency sound. Best thing is, you can wear them over foam earplugs. I've experimented and found that when I wear my earmuffs and earplugs together, they block up to 65dB of sound.

I think one of the worst things you can do is let yourself get angry at the source of the noise. As soon as you do that you're giving the brain circuits that are hurting you strength. Another thing that helps me is reminding myself: "The noise that hurts is okay to think about. I cannot hear it right now. My future self is capable of handling it if I hear it later. I will not lend it existence in this moment by worrying about it now. I am safe and I am strong."

Your anxiety comes with a physical feeling. For me it's a cold, gripping feeling in my chest. For you it may be somewhere different. When you feel that feeling, get somewhere safe from triggers, and then close your eyes, take a deep breath, force yourself to smile, and pay close attention to the feeling. Let your consciousness inhabit it. You will feel it shrink away. If it moves to another part of your body, follow it. Soon, it will dissipate.

I understand where you're coming from by wanting to run alkalines in it, but I, along with many others here, would highly recommend a set of Eneloops for regular use. I'm going to assume your reason for wanting an AA-sized light is for the availability of the batteries, which is just fine, but they do have a tendency to leak (although probably not anywhere near as likely as the folks here would have you believe). I own lights that take all sorts of batteries, and for actual "emergency" situations, I keep some Energizer Lithiums handy. They're shelf-stable for a very long time, can handle pretty extreme temperatures, and don't pose any danger to the light. They are fairly expensive for regular use, though, and that's why I tend to use Eneloops.

People have recommended a few good lights, but, from my personal experience, I would say a Thrunite T10 is a solid candidate for what you want. I EDC'd it for a few weeks, and it was pretty good. There isn't any brightness setting between the "low" mode and the "turbo" mode, which was a little annoying for me, but it was still usable. It comes with a diffuser, as well, which makes it very good for emergency lighting. In terms of durability, I haven't thrown it around too much, but the driver and all is glued in pretty solidly (at least on mine), so I'd assume it wouldn't mind a bit of a beating.

Unfortunately, it seems to be sold out on their website, and Amazon only has the cool white version at the moment.

Optics are whatever a particular flashlight uses to focus or spread the beam of light - in the case of these multi-emitter lights, it's an acrylic "total internal reflection", or TIR, lens.

Emitters are the light source - the LEDs themselves.

Anyway, I see what you're saying, and it does sound like a 5000K light will suit you nicely, and XP-L HI are very nice emitters. So yeah, do that. All I'm saying is that the ~40% brightness increase going from an SST-20 to an XP-L HI in the same flashlight is actually pretty underwhelming. If you want those emitters, get them in the Fireflies light for the change of pace, and substantially more power on turbo. Or consider a BLF Q8, which is only marginally more powerful than the D4S for the first 30 seconds, but has much better sustained performance than any Emisar or Fireflies light due to being bigger, with better heatsinking and more battery capacity. Or go seriously nuts and grab a Noctigon Meteor, which is brighter than any of these lights initially, and should maintain brightness better than at least the D4S and E07 (but probably not the Q8).

These are the pair of 3M's I have, with 31dB NRR. They are huge and ugly, but they fit well and they definitely protect more than the Howard Leights. You may not be able to get a good cheek weld with these if you're shooting rifle, but I primarily shoot pistol indoors and rifle outdoors, so it works for me.

I use these 3M disposable ear plugs as well, believe they are 29dB NRR. I promise I'm not a 3M shill.


Make sure you put in the plugs properly - roll them up, pull back your earlobe with opposite hand and then insert. I shoot indoors often 2x a month, so protecting my hearing is really important to me.

edit: I should note that I have the basic pair of the Howard Leights, not the impact Pro model.

Reylight Pineapple V3 for 54$ on amazon, yeah it's a AA light and pretty heavy as it's brass but for it's size it far outperforms any AAA light that I'm aware of and a lot of AA lights too. If brightness is your main concern this would be my choice.

It's better if you can find a different solution, but yeah, intelligible voices are a pretty black-belt thing to be able to keep in awareness without them becoming distractions. Depending on where you are in your practice, you might try playing with this, but if you aren't at least nearly at stage five, it's probably not a good plan.

You might try getting some reasonably comfortable ear protectors. However, bear in mind that meditating in silence isn't recommended. If there's any way you can find a place to sit that's not so challenging, that's better than wearing hearing protection.

Buy an air filter! I have terrible asthma and my buns' hay sets me off so badly I use a filtered respirator to clean their cage.

I have two air filters and it makes a HUGE difference. I have this one by the buns: Honeywell HFD-130 Germicidal Tower Air Purifier with Permanent IFD Filter, and this one by my bed Sanyo Air Washer Air Purifier.

The bun-filter is a monster. It's nearly 2 feet tall and can be a bit loud on the higher settings, but it's got a washable filter inside. You would not believe the GUNK that comes out of this thing when I clean it. It keeps the dust from the hay down pretty well and provides white noise to keep the buns from flipping out over every passing car too.

The other filter I haven't had long enough to say if it's good or not, but it's fancy and quiet. It shoots out water from the top and has "odor detection". I say get the monster. :)

You should take /u/Helicopterrepairman's advice and check out r/flashlight to make sure you get a few awesome lights. You would be amazed what just $25-$75 can get you. This light would probably work out pretty well for you. There's plenty of options. Doing the exploring you're doing a few proper lights would be a HUGE help for you and it would really help your videos too.

You'd have to find a stand, but this style of light on Amazon tends to be really good for the price. I have a different one that's out of stock now, but I've dropped it more than a couple times onto concrete from about head height and it's still going strong.

With that in mind, the Nitecore I recommended earlier probably won't work for you since the red LED in it is pretty low power. You might be better off getting a Solarforce L2M host (runs 18650, or can run stubby with 18350 with the extension tube removed) and a red LED drop in like this one from KAI Domain.

Or just get a white light that will take a screw in or slip on red filter, like Fenixes linked by u/ImALittleCrackpot. The Wowtac A1S BSS includes a screw in red filter and is complete package for $40.

It's more enjoyable and easier to meditate in a quiet environment, and that's why most retreat centers are in secluded areas. I live in an urban area with a high population density. When they were building a giant condo a few feet from my apartment, I started utilizing these industrial ear muffs to continue to be able to meditate, and it made practice a lot easier. They seem perfect for people with asperger's and hypersensitivity for hearing, likely a deficit in sensory gating as well.

Since you're trying to work a tight budget, I would skip the Sorby tools and opt for some less expensive HSS options. Sorby makes some of the best HSS tools on the market, but the price premium is rather high for the name. Personally, I'd suggest you opt for Hurricane as starting tools and then make the decision to go for more expensive tools down the road.

Hurricane are solid inexpensive tools and you can pick up way more tooling for $14 more than the tools you have listed. That set gets you a bowl gouge and parting tool, which are both fairly important. Take one of the scrapers and regrind it into a negative rake scraper - I'd use the 1" since a scraper that large is very likely to stall that HF lathe.

I'd also recommend spending the extra dollar now on a respirator and some P100 cartridges. This is the sort of thing you really want to have up front and is far more important than a sharpening jig - you can always learn to hand sharpen tools, you can't un-COPD your lungs later on. Many people who learn freehand sharpening swear by it and prefer it anyway. Luckily, you can pick up a solid 3M mask with filters for under $20 on Amazon.

So, for about $35 more than you're currently looking at, you can add some safety and get way more tooling for your money, at the expense of having to sharpen a little more frequently.

Is available on Amazon a hard requirement? Can you estimate "last a long time"? What type of charger do you have and do you have? I ask these questions so the people more knowledgeable than myself (still pretty noobish) can better help you out.

If Amazon is a necessity, the thrunite t10Nw is a nice option that runs on AA and (possibly) supports 14500 for better runtime and higher output.

I had a Peli torch which was a gift on leaving my old job, it lasted less than a year before it got broken in a scrap and has languished in my box of kit I no longer use or is broken ever since.

Afterwards I replaced it with a ThruNite 3C V2 which cost me very little overall, added a clickfast torch holder to it and it offers the best of both worlds as it has a 0.1lumen mode which is great for PNB entries. Plus up to a high level of lumens for actual work when on duty conducting searches, or simply as a light to see where you are going in the pitch black without having to hold a torch. This has actually worked in my favour a few times because I can get to other kit like cuffs and see what I am doing clearly hands free.

You have 2 speakers over 2 ears. Stereo is fully capable at rendering accurate direction. Surround sound adds delay, echo and dither which degrades the sound. It also requires 100% perfect V speaker placement to be even remotely accurate. You will be hard pressed to find a "Pro" that doesn't use "windows_speaker_config 1" which is the "Headphones" setting In-game. I often hear things others don't, and everyone I know that uses the 5.1 setup gets reversed direction bugs all the time. Virtual Surround is better for cinematic experiences, like Skyrim, not for CSGO where accurate direction is key. Also for gaming, most Realtek onboard chips are perfectly capable.

OK, the Snug-Plugs are close. I would suspect that the only way to get in excess of -30db is to use the best Over the Hear Headphones, or to double up on plugs plus muffs.

That is probably the best you can do for a reasonable price.

Here is another bit of information that ...well it is interesting.... every time the amplification or attenuation changes by ±3db, the power DOULBE or HALVES.

When you go from -28db to -31db, the amount of energy reaching your ears is HALF.

Keep in mind there is a SQUARE factor in the calculations, so Power is not directly proportional to Voltage (in electronic). And there is a 20 log or relative to power, 10 log factor in the dB equation.

But the simply take away is every change of 3db, which in terms of what you hear is small, is a doubling or halving of the power received.

My Rad-Bands are -23db, so to reach -32db, we increase by 3db THREE times, meaning the Power is halved three times. That means 32db is allowing 1/8th of the power to reach your ears compared to my 23db ear plugs.

Hello fellow Oregonian! Here in Eugene it got up to 430 air quality index ... that's "Hazardous"! Crazy bad smoke.

I've run up to 150 air quality index (I ran 18 miles in the orange zone.) Made me cough a few times during the run, and I felt like I could feel it impinging slightly on my performance. It wasn't pleasant, but wasn't super bad.

Today I went for a run in this half-face respirator! I looked like a Fallout character, and it was pretty tough breathing through, but it worked for a 1 hour easy run and the air quality was perfect! I wouldn't try running harder or much longer with that thing though.

You can't really go wrong with the Armytek Wizard Pro, it's my favorite light by far. Apart from a lot of other good stuff I like that it doesnt have these cooling rings that tend to get stuck on pants pockets when EDCing it.

The Thrunite TN12 is pretty nice as well.

Whatever you do, don't buy any plastic flashlights. If you wanna buy some flashlights at a reasonable price, try getting some Maglites. They can be serviced if need be and will last a long time. If I can't afford expensive flashlights at the moment and would need to buy a bunch of them, Maglites can be purchased on the fly at the box stores.

But if you want the real deal, then get a state-of-the-art tactical flashlight that can fit inside your pocket. ThruNite, Nitecore, Fenix, and Convoy are the kings of flashlights. Personally, I recommend the Thrunite TC12 V2 as the reviews on this flashlight praises its durability and reliability. Not too many people had trouble with this flashlight, except with the V1 because people complained about cycling through modes to get to the one they want.

Since power is an issue. Rechargeable batteries are the way to go. 18650 Lithium batteries will last you 500 charges, but you can pick up rechargeable batteries in AA, AAA, C, and D-Cell Nickel Metal Hydrate as well. Since the flashlight kings have torches that run off of 18650, there are adapters that you can use in case you can't get a hold of them. If you want to stick with primaries and AA/ AAA batteries, then get Energizer Ultimate Lithium cells. They're pricey but they last a long time and can be stored up to 25+ years.

Since this is a third-world nation you're sending these lights to, then USB rechargeable lighting an absolute must. If you want true independence, get a solar charging kit, portable energy storage, and a USB rechargeable battery system. You can use the solar panels to charge your flashlight and your rechargeable batteries without ever using the power grid.

I got both of those lights for under $40. The left one is an Emisar D1 mini thrower. I just got it this week and I love it. It has a good flood but not sports worthy, I would suggest the $65 BLF Q8 (largest, 4th from right in bottom picture) or $100 Emisar D18 at for that. The light on the right is a Nitecore P30. The P stands for precision. It's a fairly long range thrower and can light stuff up at 500 yards easily. I got it on sale for $35 but it's typically around $60. There is no flood for sports either. Both the D1 and P30 are 18650 powered throw lights but pocketable. You might like the BLF Q8 because it can be belt pouch carried or back pocket or jacket pocket carried. It also has a threaded spot for camera tripod mounts and would be great for camping and sports. It will require you to buy 4 high drain 18650 button top batteries and a charger.

Have you tried over-the-ear hearing protection? It's made for power tools and the like, but in an office setting, it bestows pure, blissful silence. I had these, which were pretty conspicuous-looking, but there are smaller ones available. The Noise Reduction Rating is the most important thing to look for (higher is better).

You can find this type of light for less than $3 on AliExpress. Probably not a terrible light for the price. It will have an ugly tint and it's certainly not waterproof, but that's what you get for the cost of a soda.

You didn't list the features you want, but I'm sure there are some other lights out there that will satisfy them. Maybe something like this ThruNite T10? Have you checked the stickied post on lights that get recommend a lot?

Those particle masks will only help so much, in order to be better protected you need a good seal around the face.

I use this flashlight. Mostly on trails. I carry it in my forward most hand. This allows you to point the light around turns. Having a light mounted on your board will not allow you to see where you are carving to. Board mounted lights are only good to help you to be seen. Terrible for actually riding. It is rechargeable by a Android cord.

So, I do not have one to trade or anything, but before you order one, I will share this. I researched the uc35 for hours. Read on all the forums, looking at every comparable light that met the criteria as you listed. The conclusion that people kept leading me to was to forget the Fenix altogether, and get a ThruNite. The quality of construction is significantly better, the light is brighter, the light modes are more usable and varied. Plus, it's cheaper. I now have 2 of them, and after using them, 2 of my buddies ordered themselves one as well. I highly recommend it over the Fenix, and in this size and class, I think it really shines. Link for lazy. There are some incredible lights out there not only much smaller than what you've got but significantly more powerful. They are both top-notch quality at 1/2 the cost of olight and some of the other big names. Go with a neutral color, you won't be disappointed!

Can I try to convince you to go slightly over budget? Consider the Thrunite T10 for the light. It is $20. And then for the batteries, a 4 pack of eneloops w/ charger is another $18. These batteries will last you pretty much your entire life. They won't have the environmental impact of going through hundreds of alkalines. Alkaline batteries won't be able to effectively power the light on its brightest mode either. And most importantly, consider them as an insurance policy. When an alkaline leaks inside the $20 light, then you need to get another $20 light. But the $18 batteries will never leak, so you come out ahead.

Of course if you forget to charge up the battery some day, pop in an alkaline. But get it out of the light as soon as you get home.

tl;dr: If sound overwhelms you try these

I totally understand this as it happens to myself as well, but usually mine is less touching unless I am really already far too overwhelmed.

I get extremely overstimulated from sound, it starts to "hurt" as in I don't feel pain, but my body reacts as if I did. (like chalkboard + fork)

I personally use these to deal with it, blocks out all sound and after a while I feel a bit better. It might be worth giving it a try to see if reducing overall stimulation helps.

Won't help with Netflix, but I own these earplugs (yes, the 200 pack, lmao) and I swear by them. They won't completely muffle noise, but they do help a lot.

You can also put yourself in your own private sound bubble by popping in earbuds and then putting a pair of these over them. Not the comfiest thing in the world in the long run, but for an hour or two it works very very well in my experience.

If this is an indoor range, I strongly encourage you to try out a few different types of earplugs to wear under the earmuffs.

What are some of the staple gadgets and gizmos you have to maximize portability, versatility, durability, and price, time, and space efficiency?

Here's my list:

-Feiyue shoes. Crazy cheap, they take up no room, and they don't look out-of-place in most situations.

-Light My Fire titanium spork. This is the only eating utensil I ever use, and I take it everywhere.

-Pyrex 4-cup Bowl. As long as I'm just making food for me, this dish is the only one I need. It can withstand pretty much everything, and the microwave-friendly lid is awesome.

-Platypus roll-up water bottles. Carrying around an empty water bottle is really annoying. These guys hold lots of water, and only take up as much space as the volume of water they contain.

-Milk crates and heavy-duty Rubbermaid containers instead of furniture. The only thing you can really do with a chair is use it as a chair, and the only thing you can do with a chest of drawers is use it as a chest of drawers. Might as well combine the two -- and make them really light and portable to boot!

-Lifetime folding table. This is the closest thing I have to furniture.

-Coleman 4-in-1 Quickbed. It's a twin mattress, or two separate twin mattresses, or a king-size bed, it's comfortable as poo, and it folds up to nothing.

-Night Ize Gear Ties. I've used these for everything from coathangers to patching the handle on a neighbor's lawnmower to attaching the basket to my bike.

-MicroNet Microfiber Towel. Linen actually takes up a surprising amount of room. This guy works great, and folds away to nothing.

-Wellspring FlipNote. I've had my FlipNote for 5 years and it's been in my pocket every single day -- whether I was in South Africa, military combat training, business meetings, or going out with friends. It's an idea journal, an address book, a wallet, a writing surface, a pen... all kinds of stuff, and it's super-slim and super-durable.

-Bug-out bag. This isn't quite the one I have -- mine was about $60 and came with a CamelBak and tube inside -- but it's the right idea. When I was discharged from the military, I fit my entire life in this amazing backpack with room left over for the full CamelBak and hiked up and down the California coast for several days with no problems. The same backpack's still the only piece of luggage I use for travel, for class, for everything. It expands from normal backpack size to HUGE.

TL;DR If I can't pack everything I own into my tiny car in one hour, I have too much stuff.

(Edit: This list isn't everything I own, but it's the things that I figure would be useful to anyone.)

If you're looking for high performance for the price, not AA or AAA. You really need Li-ion for that.

The best value options that include batteries and a way to charge them come from Wowtac and Sofirn. Wowtac includes an 18650 battery with a USB port for charging with most of its lights; the A1S and A2S are the most recommended models here, having more output, larger capacity included batteries and available neutral white, as compared to the base models.

Sofirn has offers a battery/charger bundle with a lot of its lights. The Sofirn SP32A is a great deal right now at $27 with a battery and charger.

these are just 30 DB and not noise canceling.. do you have a small airport nearby.. find the aircraft accessory store. charts.. lamps, electronics.. . they will have several options like this.. they will also have noise canceling versions.. i have some of the earlier versions of these in green that were only 27DB reduction. and i wore them when i would go to the funny car races.. be sure to wonder down the landing light isle there.. if your car still has small round headlights.. part 46.. there are 250W and 450W versions. so you would need a second battery and a starter relay to turn them on.. blinded by the light would be the remarks coming toward you.

Sofirn SP31 v2.0 is similar to the Wowtac A1S (dual switch but XP-L HI LED, so it's throwier). The low is 5lm. It's overpriced in Amazon, you can get it cheaper at AliExpress. Edit: Another option is the Sofirn SP32A v2.0, it allows you to choose between the fixed modes and ramping, but as it's side switch only you should use either electronic or mechanical lockup to prevent accidental activation.

Another option is the Thorfire VG15S (tail-switch only). Its XM-L2 LED is not the newest but it's still bright and the flashlight has a 0.5lm moonlight, the bundled battery is not bad and it isn't too expensive. The XP-L used in the Wowtac is pretty much a miniaturized version of the XM-L2 to fit in smaller spaces, they are very similar in performance.

Here's what I think can help you. There isn't really a good solution for you that isn't hard to do. I got my own room over time by convincing my parents. There are some things you can do.

• Get noise cancelling headphones and/or earmuffs and/or earplugs. These will MASSIVELY help with overwhelming sound. I recommend these. Active noise cancelling headphones are a bit expensive, but they are definitely worth it.

  $30 earmuffs - these are cheap and block out noise.
  
  
• When your dad is not in his room, go to his room. When I had the loft as my room, I often took the laptop computer to my parents' room to use it. Although you can't bring your entire room there, you should bring things in your dad's room while he's not using it. If you can't do this, reply to me.
  
  
• Convince your dad to switch rooms. This is harder to do. Figure out all the reasons why it's more important for you to have the bedroom. Tell him how Asperger's makes it incredibly difficult to even think without a room and if you do get a room, you'll be able to find a job and move out quicker. He doesn't need to have walls around his room just because he's the owner of the house.
  
  
• If you have a therapist or psychologist, tell them about your situation and how bad it is on you and your mental health. It's not healthy to have auditory problems and be the one person who has to deal with a situation that would be bad if they have auditory problems. If you don't have a therapist, please get one as soon as you can.
  
  
• This is the best solution but the hardest one to do. Move out. Find a job that's feasable to get (you have the requirements to get it and it's a job that wouldn't be torture for someone with Asperger's). I know this is hard, especially when you have no time to relax and feel fine. But once you do it, you'll be on a path to eventually be able to rent a space on your own. Maybe even find a relative or a friend that is willing to share an apartment or space with you as long as you get your own room. This will usually require you to pay a fraction of the rent of the space.
  
  The advice is very hard to follow, so take it a step at a time. Get headphones or ear mufflers first which will be a huge improvement to your mind if you don't already have active noise cancelling headphones. Remember to get active noise cancelling headhones because they really block out the noise. Then try to start using your dad's room to do things, which will probably work. You're limited in what you can do in someone elses room, but your mind is more free. Then try to convince your dad to switch rooms, which may or may not work. If it doesn't work, tell a therapist or psychologist about your problem. I don't know the best advice for you, which is why you should see one of those professionals. The ultimate goal is to move out because that will really free up your life.
  
  I still think it would be good to answer these questions. Are the auditory problems caused more by ambient noise or voices, or the feeling of having no barrier around you or something else or multiple things? Do you only live with yourself and your dad? Does your dad know and accept that you have Asperger's? Realistically, a lot of this advice won't work. Please reply to me with what happens when you try these solutions.

Best bass response I've heard from a closed back is the Ultrasone Pro 900 paired with a decent amp, they are great without as well. There are some issues with them though such as slightly recessed mids from massive bass response. Compared to the Beyer DT770 though, I'd say the beyers have a much more balanced and milder sounding bass. They definitely are a step down from the HD650s though, noticeable step down. If you want bass, isolation, and closed back, I'd go with Ultrasone Pro 900. If you want not so bassy and balanced, closed, isolation I'd recommend Mad Dogs over the DT770. If you want anything good but just isolation is the most important, I'd recommend high end ear muffs (like this http://www.amazon.com/3M-Peltor-H10A-Optime-Earmuff/dp/B00009LI4K/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1367548069&sr=1-1&keywords=earmuff) with a good IEM in your ears at the same time, nothing beats that in isolation except active noise cancellation. Depends what you want.

If you need to block out noise, I recommend using good ear muffs such as the 3M Peltor X-Series. If that is insufficient, use earplugs underneath. I've also combined those with a good white noise generator like the Marpac Dohm. Noise-defense, in-depth.

Alternatively, if you have a lot of money to spend, you could get the Bose QC 35 II noise-cancelling headphones; however, they probably won't prove more effective than ear muffs over earplugs, just more comfortable.

If you can acclimatize yourself to ambient sound through meditation, even better. However, if noise countermeasures make the difference between meditating and not meditating, better to use them. This is just a more modern version of traditional Buddhist advice to find a quiet, secluded place to meditate - at least at the start.

The Sofirn SP10S is high CRI and single AA or 14500. But I dislike hold to turn off, and you may dislike the side switch for the modes.

Alternatively the C01S is single AAA, twist head, and high CRI. This one is extremely pocket friendly, but battery life is limited and not everyone likes the twist head.

The only perfect fit for your description, that I know of, is also a bit of a luxury light. The Reylight Pineapple is high CRI and tail switch only. It’s also made of solid brass. This thing is highly regarded and three times the price of a SP10S. But it’ll do ya good.

I really like the Thrunite T10. So much so that I've bought 2. I bought CW in September and carried it everyday until the clip got caught on my car door as I was getting out. The clip came off and got run over. I've been told that I can email thru ite and they'll send me another but I've just attached it to my key ring and it's great to have on there! It's only about 3.5 inches in length half and inch wide. It's got a deep carry clip, and 3 modes. The highest gives you 252 lumens. To me it's totally worth it.

First you must realize something.

1. You're not his parents. They have the authority/ability to correct this. From your story they don't seem interested.

   If he's down the hall I doubt you'll be able to hear him with these. They are like fucking magic. When you put them on you'll hear the ringing of silence. It's amazing.
   
   Also get some over the counter sleep aids (diphenhydramine)

I have the $27 one cell Anker light similar to yours, since June 2018. I used it extensively for a few months until I arrived at /r/flashlight. In fact, just used it tonight so I could write this honestly.

My observations:

• appears very solidly built aluminum body
  
  
• includes battery and onboard USB charging!
  
  
• Beam is wide enough for close in and out to 100yds or so. This is very subjective.
  
  
• Has not broken after being dropped, nor failed in the rain. (IP65 rated)

• Endcap unscrews to expose a micro USB charging port, which has worked well so far.
  
  
• Has three modes (HML) + flash + strobe. Memory works to return to last HML mode used. IMO, the memory feature is one of the most important elements of a good UI.

I prefer the super spork from Light My Fire. It's actually double ended, instead of the real combo utensil.

Sporks are fun ideas, but then you realize you have a fork with stubby tines, and a spoon with slots in it. The super spork isn't ideal, but it is better. The titanium model also fixes the primary design flaw of the (lighter and cheaper) plastic version, which is the slight fragility of the middle section.

Less than $17. Maybe $25 in-store? A pack of disposables probably costs at least half that, and the difference between the two is night and day. You won't smell a fart in the $17 respirator. A disposable mask should be disposed of, rather than used for some imagined protection. (OK, it does block 95% of non-oil-base airborne particles - better than nothing, and better than a rag. But that means it lets 5% through, and is only guaranteed if you have a good deal, which you won't. The respirator will block 99.97% and has a comfortable silicone seal.)

Note that I am saying this purely as a general advice when working with dusty stuff: I have no idea if there's something especially dangerous​ about the finish. The clear coat is probably a urethane, no special danger. The paint might be lead if it's old.

Also, if you have a lot of it, run it through a thickness planer instead of sanding. You may have to sharpen (or clean gummed up) knives afterwards, but the shavings are large, lower dust, and relatively easy to clean up, you won't go through acres of sandpaper, and it's so much faster and easier. And in theory, there are no nails.

I don't if I'm rough turning green wood, but usually do wear one if I'm turning dry wood, and always when sanding. I use this one from 3M, which fits under the face shield pretty nicely and isn't too uncomfortable.

Well, think of it this way, what is the downside that prevents it from being practical or useful? There really isn't one. Since it prevents the gunshots from causing permanent hearing damage, anytime the weapon is fired it's practical. It's simply a safety device. It doesn't solve every potential problem by itself, but it's not supposed to. Ear plugs are still useful, like seat belts and airbags, they're both good individually but combined is even better.

The amount of noise reduction varies widely depending on the caliber, firearm, and suppressor. Generally though yes it's still loud, but not loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage. The dB scale isn't linear, so a reduction from 165dB to 132dB may not sound like a lot, but it will save you from needing a hearing aid later in life.

At the range, people sometimes forget to put their ears back on.

You can suppress shotguns, generally not as effective but still doable. Home defense is probably the most practical application. If you ever have to use a gun indoors, there's a good chance you're going to cause permanent hearing damage to everyone in the house. It's not realistic to scramble around for hearing protection for yourself in that situation, let alone the entire family.

I also have the titanium version and it is great. Never once worried about breaking it. I typically am only using the spoon on dehydrated foodstuffs, but every so often I do "luxury" hikes where we bring steaks and whatnot and so a discrete fork is a boon. It's because of the fork that I think it's superior to the frequently recommended long spoon option. "Spork" is a total misnomer for the utensil since it is a fork and spoon on opposite ends, not a mutant amalgamation of the two.

I'm got an alcohol stove, GSI Tea Kettle, and a titanium spork. I take a little aluminum cup that I use for instant coffee/tea but I've been thinking about getting a sea to summit xmug because they pack down nice. One of my favorite things is a little table by cascade wild.

What I consider essential on the fabrication side:

Huge air tank and hoses. Lots of air tools (glue sprayer, paint sprayer, saws, cutoff wheels, air chuck, nail gun, etc). Seriously, this gets a ton of use and is absolutely necessary IMO.

Table saw. Must have a sturdy fence and be able to rip at least 2 feet wide. Rockewell is basically the cheapest one I know of that's decent. Take a look online, lots of people selling higher end ones, used, for a few hundred.

Router with circle jig and the appropriate bits.

Decent quality drill with spare batteries (I'm currently using the 20v lithium Dewalts, they've been great). Jig saw (I like the Skil brand with laser guide), reciprocating saw. Various drill bits, unibits, and saws.

Palm sander, and pads with various grits.

Bench grinder (wire wheel and stone if possible). I keep a full size angle grinder around as well, with some flap and cutoff disks.

Bench vise.

Propane torch, preferably, with easy-start (no striker/lighter, a button start of some sort)

A decent quality dust mask. I use these. Trust me, it's WAY better than breathing in fiberglass dust, or even just MDF dust.

Tons of latex gloves, "chip brushes", and cheapo tupperware for resin work (mix in tupperware, let it dry, bend to crack out resin, re-use until it's destroyed).

Sawhorses, or at least, durable garbage cans.

Shop vac.

Razor blades. I buy single-edge 100 packs and just throw them away as soon as they're not sharp. For cutting carpet, vinyl, etc. it's much better than scissors.

A decent quality hot glue gun and lots of glue sticks (this is how you position rings for custom doors, dashes, etc)

High CRI Neutral white is really nice if you have never had one. Tritium is fun to get into too. I need to order some myself actually for a Reylight TI-LAN.

Otherwise, look into Etymotic and Shure iems in that order. They've some of the best isolation on the market.

You’re set in the watch department. I think a Victorinox Cadet or Leatherman Juice s2 would be a great general edc tool. Couple it with a midrange nice quality light like the reylight pineapple or an olight s1r.

I haven't used Klarus myself, but they appear to be similar to EagleTac and Fenix which are decent flashlights, although a bit overkill for most people.

I have a few Streamlight and Surefire lights which I am very happy with. Usually, if someone is looking to get a decent flashlight which isn't too expensive and will last a long time, I'd point them in the direction the Protac 1L-1AA, since CR123/18650 batteries can be hard to find/expensive in stores and it can use AA batteries in a pinch.

Most people don't really need a flashlight brighter than around 200 lumens, so a lot of these extreme lumen models are a bit overkill. Not to mention that usually with a lower lumen light the battery will last a lot longer.

Very happy with the light. I set the firefly mode before I go to bed, so I've got something so I can see in the bathroom in the middle of the night. I like that it remembers modes.

From the format of the post I'll take it as a first light I assume you probably don't have 18650 batteries or a dedicated charger, Then I highly recommend either the Sofirn SP31 or the Wowtac A1S both on amazon for around $30 or less and come with an 18650 and charging solution with a turbo of 1000+ lumens.

Its but a taste and first step into the game you will soon find yourself with more lights then imaginable.... =D

I have this 3M one and I use these filters on it. Honestly, I've used it only a handful of times in the 8 years I've been exploring. Once in a place full of black mold, another in a place where all the insulation had fallen onto the floor and created a dust cloud as you walked. It's kind of a personal judgement call. If you feel more comfortable wearing one all the time, go ahead. Just don't get a gas mask unless you want to look silly (or like a bioterrorist).

Just grind off the galvanizing in the area and make sure you are in a well ventilated area and out of the smoke plume. I would probably wear one of these too.

That $30 Wowtac looks like a good deal. My 18650 light is the Thrunite TC12 at $60. Excellent light if you are looking for something possibly more reliable than that Wowtac.

Alright, I suggest something like this. It's has 900 lumens, it's IP65, it has a rechargeable battery, it has a head that appears to be capable of delivering impacts, and at $25 USD, it is easily replaceable.

It is an US link though, so you may want to find the Canadian equivalent of it.

Personally, I usually have a titanium spork, chopsticks (you could find similar ones cheaper) and I usually have a knife of some sort on me (like a swiss army knife or something). in case I need to cut up something a little tougher than the spork could handle.

Titanium is nice because it's super light and antibacterial. If you look in an outdoor store you'll find lots of lightweight options that should be easy to carry/store in your car.
