Loves

Bombsheller octopus leggings - They don't carry these on Amazon anymore, but last I checked, they do allow you to pay via Amazon on their website. The size chart was off when I first ordered them so I exchanged them for a size up, and the company was very accomodating. The leggings are comfy and sturdy.


Jellyfish socks - Adorable and well made. Definitely plan to purchase more designs from this seller.


Snowpants - I don't wear these a lot since I'm more the summer outdoorsy type, but they were excellent for walking my ex's dog in the winter and I still occasionally wear them for running errands on foot when it's really cold out.


Burned velvet leggings - I bought these in "blurple" and adore them. They're slightly sheer, so I wear other leggings underneath (these ones from eBay do the trick).

Thigh high socks - I have found these cheaper on amazon.ca, but this was the first pair I bought. Cute and sturdy! I now have 3 more pairs on their way!


Zebra print scarf - I was impressed by the quality of this one. I did donate it when I was gifted a similar scarf in black/gray as I try not to keep duplicates of non-essentials, but I would still have it otherwise.


Timberland knee high boots - Bought these in black, and they are probably one of my favorite Amazon purchases ever. If I were to ever re-buy these, I'd go a half size up, as I had to get them professionally stretched once they arrived, but holy fuck I love these boots. Waterproof, and fantastic quality. They're my go-to boots and I wear them more than any other piece of footwear I own.


Underbust belt - I'm not huge on the price tag, only because I once bought a nearly identical one on clearance pre-breast-augmentation. I'm glad I was able to buy this one post-op since the old one stopped fitting though. Will buy in more colors if they ever go on sale.


Booties - Pleasantly surprised by the quality! Will definitely consider buying more if I ever want/need them in different colors. Comfier for longer wear than most of my other heels, too.


Suspender Skirt - I love this thing so much, I bought two more on eBay after buying this one in black. This one's definitely better quality than the other two, though. I'd recommend wearing them with a shorts slip since there's not a lot of length to them. I'm actually really sad that they don't ship this to Canada anymore, otherwise I'd buy a couple more colors.


Beechfield beanie - This is definitely more my style when it comes to fit, but isn't as warm as the cable knits. Definitely one of my go-to hats.

Likes

Wet look batwing top - Surprised by the fit/quality for the price. Fabric looks/feels a bit cheap but overall the piece is well made.


Chunky cable knit beanies - I ordered this hat in olive, mustard, and teal. They're comfy, warm, and feel well made. I find them to be a little too bulky for my head, so I'm trying to stretch them out/break them in a bit. Definitely personal preference though, and not a quality issue.


Glitter loafers with spikes - They're gorgeous, but not high quality. I'd put them under "meh" for lifespan, but I did love them up until they started falling apart.


Holo creepers - I really need to wear these more, but my day-to-day fashion is much more casual and I don't party like I used to. Working my way towards wearing them more. The quality is decent but I don't think they'll last forever.


JollyChic search result link - JollyChic is great for cheap-ish stuff. I've bought from them a number of times and rarely been disappointed. Some of their synthetic stuff smells chemically at first (shiny leggings being one) but the smell dissipates after a couple washes. Their customer service is also stellar. Shared the search results since the specific items I ordered are no longer listed.


Iron Fist sweater - Bought in a size small, fits more like a medium. Will be shrinking it.


Waist belt - Great quality for the price (~$13CAD if I recall correctly). Fit is a little stiff, so it can look a little boxy with some outfits as it isn't flexible around curves, but overall still nice.

Meh

Faux fur vest #1 - Not the worst quality, but definitely felt cheaper than a couple other vests I own. Ended up selling it since the size chart was off and I didn't love it enough to exchange it for the right size.


Faux fur vest #2 - Slightly lower quality than #1, but same deal - Size chart was inaccurate, but not worth exchanging so I sold it.


Thermal leggings - Smelled awful at first, but it went away overtime. They are still pretty warm even after washing/wearing them for a couple years now, but they pill, so they're not the most aesthetically pleasing. Great for layering, but would not buy again.


Skull cardigan - It's cute and cozy. I wear it around the house more than out, since I noticed after washing it that the bottom corners started curling up a bit due to shrinkage. Also wish it was a tad bit longer.


Spiked slouch beret - The creases are a little harder than I wanted/expected, so I'm trying to stretch it out/break it in a bit. I have other hats that I like more though, so this one doesn't get a lot of love and might just end up being donated.


Leg warmers - Quality-wise, they should be in the "loves" section, but I bought these back when I was on a wild spree to better prepare myself for winter, and while I do love how warm they are, the patterns/colors just aren't my style.


Digital print tanks - The quality is about what I expected for the material, but I found the fit to be off on most of them (especially in the armpit area). I modified a few for a better fit, but mostly I wear them as slips now. The material is perfect for layering under sweaters that normally "grab" onto cotton camis. They can definitely be found cheaper elsewhere, though.


Fleece lined leggings - I bought these in damask, which I guess is no longer available. They're completely matted on the inside now, and not what I'd call "fleece lined" anymore. Still pretty on the outside, but definitely no good for warmth.

Downright Awful

OURS vendor search results - Seriously, don't buy anything from OURS. Their photos are stolen from other brands and the quality of their clothes are laughably poor. I threw them away rather than donate them because I knew that they would never be rebought, even at thrift store prices. They were the worst. Woooorst.

So thoughts:

1. There's a significant chance you'll undergo a significant weight change over the next few years. For most, living away from home poor eating habits will catch up to you - the legendary freshman 15. I'd be hesitant on really investing more than $100 at this point in your life.
   
2. Make your own call about the color. Personally, I think black pea coats are plenty versatile; remember, you only have to match with pants and shoes (EDIT: assuming you are wearing a scarf with the coat, which personally is best). Personally, if I mostly wore lighter colored pants I go'd go for something else.
   
3. As others have noted, however, it's a fairly thin material and low % wool. If you live somewhere with really cold winters you'll need to really layer up underneath. In comparison, I had a thick, nearly 100% wool coat that was plenty warm even with just a shirt underneath.
   
4. Fit wise, no idea how this guy fits, but pea coats in general tend to run pretty huge. There's play in how an outer coat fits (compared to say a shirt or a suit coat), but make sure to try it on with just a shirt, with layers, with a suit, etc.
   
5. American Eagle has regular significant sales. If you don't need it right now, I'd wait for one.
   
6. The top button or two being button backed (aka has a button supporting on the other side) is a huge plus. Really nice/expensive peacoats should have all buttons button-backed and even less expensive coats should have at least the top. It'll dramatically help keep the buttons from falling off - a significant issue with cheaper peacoats.
   
7. Get a couple of scarfs to wear with it. Unless you are wearing a suit it'll probably look weird without one. I'd go with acrylic scarves for now, as they are dirt cheap. Acrylic scarves tend are usually thin, but very soft and warm. The downside is they leave lint all over the place, and tend to fall apart after years of use. Never, ever spend more than $20 for one (shoot for $15 or less, I've gotten ones for $5 on clearance at Kohl's). If you go for a wool/cashmere scarf, make sure it's mostly wool and doesn't contain any acrylic. You'll probably want to wear a scarf if it's cold out and you aren't wearing something collared shirt or nicer underneath (so almost always).
   
8. Speaking of lint, get yourself a lint brush. Wool attracts lots of lint.
   
9. Get a nice pair of wool gloves, as standard northface-like snow gloves will probably clash. A wool with leather grip should be functional and fit the peacoat look nicely; should be at most $30. Probably want to skip acrylic gloves, but might be a cheap holdover.
   
10. Consider getting a nice pair of leather gloves, especially if you ever plan on wearing the coat with a suit. A decent pair of cashmere lined leather gloves should run for $40 or less with sales. Macy's was selling a bunch of these for $40 recently, but you can go for less if you shop around. Make sure you get the right size, too large will look terrible and too small won't be wearable.

11. Find an authentic navy peacoat at a military surplus store. Should run you about $100, but make sure it's not an "authentic recreation" - you want the real deal.
    
12. This Nautica Peacoat is a similar priced/look/wool%/look peacoat. Fits really well though, and you can try it on at Macy's. Might get cheaper between Macy's and Amazon if you bid your time.
    
13. It's no longer on their website, but H&M was selling a shorter but otherwise similar peacoat for ~$80. Might still be stores, and it was sold in the very awesome camel color. Shorter length might be more appealing for a younger guy. The peacoat on their website is a different coat and definitely not worth $120 (40% wool).

This semester was my student teaching semester. I'm a music major, so I was placed in an elementary school. It took me awhile to really get used to things, but halfway through I seemed to be doing fairly well, and the kids liked me.

Fast forward to my last day. I'm teaching like normal, but it's bittersweet. I had at least three children come up to me and tell me that they want to either be just like me, or sing like me when they grow up. I nearly cried on the spot. There were also children coming in and out of the room all day to give me little scraps of paper, or cards to say how much they loved me and would miss me.

As for being inspired, I was definitely inspired by the chorus kids. At their last meeting, which was more of a party, they gave me a stuffed animal, as well as a big hand made card that they all signed. I decided at that point that I wouldn't let anything stop me from becoming the best teacher I can possibly be.

Fleece lined tights would be a great smaller gift to give your friend. They are black and opaque, which I think would be quite suitable for professional attire aaannndd they have the warm fuzzies of a sweatshirt hugging your legs. Be sure to check the size charts of any of these products so you get her the right size.

I feel like clothes wise, she should be fine with anything she brought from California. Skirt and a suit jacket? Well, put on those fleece tights. Thermal underwear under clothes can also keep you very warm. Scarves can help with drafty environments both indoors and outdoors. A long pashmina can pretty much be used as a blanket without looking crazy.

Once it starts snowing she may want to get snow boots, so she can switch up what she's wearing on the streets vs. indoors. I love anything by Sorel, these boots are warm, waterproof, and cute!

Accessorizing and layering is the biggest part of staying warm in the winter. You could also go the mom route and get her a nice hat and gloves set so you know she's not freezing her fingers off! I bought these cute rain boots for myself about a year ago, and they've held up well! They come in a lot of patterns; I have the argyle plaid just because I like plaid, but the polka dots are cute too. :)

I have this scarf in red. It's super warm and comes in multiple colors. :)

I'm pretty attached to my phone, so I have these gloves. I love the knitted pattern, and it's a must for me to still be able to do stuff on my phone while I have gloves on.

I have some heated purple slippers (battery operated) from Sears, and they're really nice since my floor is wood. I have my eye on these adorable slippers though because they're just so cute. I love food with cute faces on them. :D They're kinda pricy though.

Also, Hot Hands are a savior. I would buy them from Walmart or Target; it's cheaper, and you can get however many you want. These kept my hands warm when I was outside in freezing temperatures from midnight to 10 am!

That looks beautiful, I love it! I agree with isamytaken, no necklace- hair up, sparkly earrings, bracelet and a red lip. Another alternative I'm thinking is to wear something warm but still classy. You are so right, the neckline is absolutely gorgeous. However I don't know about you, but I feel that even inside these parties are typically not warm enough for spaghetti straps. If that's your case too, I was thinking that a nice shawl like this one could be a good accessory. It'd look great with your hair up and some sparkly earrings. You could accessorize it too with a pretty brooch in the middle. And also some opaque winter maternity pantyhose to warm your legs. Either way, you look stunning with this dress!

My favorite blanket scarves are this cashmere and lambs wool Acne Canada dupe and this Forever 21 colorblocked scarf.

I couldn't afford the original Acne scarf and the dupe is less than half the original price and close enough in quality to my satisfaction. It is a little stiffer than I like but it still drapes so well and is really warm. It also comes in many of the color ways that the Acne Canada does. I may buy another one in camel or grey.

The forever 21 scarf really surprised me because it looks more expensive than it cost and it's really warm and versatile. The colors are perfect for my wardrobe palette and works with most of my clothing. It also doubles as a shawl / blanket in a jiffy.

I have one like this and another like this, basically a large scarf. Maybe I haven't got it figured out yet, but it's a bit of a pill to get all my hair in it (about chin length, so it might be easier for you), and keeping it tied and on my head can be a challenge. But I tend to move a lot at night. You can also get a satin or silk pillow case.

Zomg we need this infinity chevron scarf. I know you have it in navy but black is as timeless as navy and I'm a little bit obsessed with chevron prints right now. This scarf is so versatile and pretty it's a must buy.

I have some fashion scarves. I keep one in my purse at all times (neutral colors are best). I wrap them like this to help protect my cleavage, then take it off again after dinner.
