Over at Dingoonity a little while back, we were talking about some ultra cheap handhelds...

http://boards.dingoonity.org/other-game-systems/d-cat-16-bit-handheld-console-only-$11-99-on-amazon-and-has-a-sd-card-slot!/

The particular one I mentioned only plays Genesis ROMS, but there's a similar one:
https://www.amazon.com/Sega-Portable-2-8-Inch-Player-Built-Genesis/dp/B00F1P0TMS/185-6560902-7358833?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

And another user chip confirmed that it has undocumented ability to play other systems such as NES, SNES, Gameboy, and GBA. Though I wouldn't expect the performance of the SNES or GBA to be perfect.

Also the screens aren't that great and if you're trying to use it outside it might be frustrating. But, with that being said, for something that costs as much as a nice hamburger, it's worth at least checking out if at least for giggles :)

Other than that, I think something like GBA or GB Micro would be good, or possibly one of those random chinese devices like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EA8H3RA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2QUV44IATOJS2&coliid=IZP2U9A6PT99T

or this:

or this:

or this:

(Just pulled those off my amazon wishlist)

But, I don't have any actual experience with any of those so I can't speak for the quality of them.

Hope that helps and good luck in your high tower gaming!!!

u/Derkanus · 2 pointsr/retrogaming

To open them up, you need a special screwdriver. I bought this $11 kit and it's got stuff to open pretty much any retro cartridge or console. If you're in the business of collecting retro games, one of those screwdrivers is imperative, IMO.

The Super Retro Trio+ is around $75 on Amazon. The NES and Genesis work great, but the Super NES has bad audio, especially for the Super Gameboy (it's basically unplayable). I also have an RES+, which is essentially just the NES part of it, which is around $40. These don't have a 4:3 switch built in, which I hate because neither does my TV.

I prefer the Hyperkin Retron HD ($30) and the Supa Retron HD ($50) because they have a toggle switch to output in 4:3 or 16:9, but the Retron HD won't play some of the NES games that my RES+ will (but the Supa Retron does play the Super Gameboy just fine). Hyperkin also just put out a Mega Retron HD ($50) but I haven't bought one of those yet.

So it's all a balancing act with what clone consoles you like best. Luckily, I got most of mine with gift cards or as Christmas/Birthday presents, so I (mostly) didn't have to pony up my own cash.

u/OdinRage02 · 1 pointr/retrogaming

Here is the switcher that I use. My tv has s video input so it works great because I can use systems that output s video or composite with this one. Here is an s video cable that would work for both your SNES and your N64. Here is a composite cable that would work with your model 1 Sega Genesis, and Here would be am example of composite cables that would work with you NES.

As for the surge protector, here is the one I use and I really like it because it can hold a lot of the big power bricks that these older consoles like to use. Anyway hope that helped point you in the right direction. Of course it is a little bit of an investment, but overall I bet you will be much happier with a set up like this. I know personally I could never go back to constantly physically switching consoles out when I want to play them, this makes it so much easier to enjoy all my consoles with minimal effort. Good luck on your set up!

u/SomeGuyNamedJason · 1 pointr/SEGAGENESIS

The Hyperkin GN6 on Amazon is super cheap and I've heard it's very comparable to the original 6-button. My personal favorite is the SG-18 a.k.a. the Series III by Honey Bee, I have the Competition Pro branded version. It's an awesome controller, best d-pad I've ever used on a third-party controller, love the larger form-factor (similar in size to the original 3-button controller), and I just think it looks pretty cool. I like it so much I ended up getting their SF-3 SNES controller.

u/NinjaCow · 9 pointsr/gamecollecting

I have one with all the accessories RetroGEN (Play genesis games) and RetroAdvance (Play GBA games). I love it. It is made of a nice material that feels great in your hand and isn't heavy at all. Plays almost every cart you can throw at it. The battery last about 8-10 hours on a single charge so plenty of play time too. I use mine all the time. Get this one over the SupaBoy any day of the week. Does everything the SupaBoy does and way more!

If I have to say a downside I would say it is far more sensitive to dirty carts than any other system. So make sure you thoroughly clean your carts before using with the Retro Duo.

I probably wouldn't buy from ThinkGeek. You can find better deals on it elsewhere. Make sure you get the V2.0 Core. I got mine on Groupon for $45.

$73 on Amazon w/Prime

$79 on StoneAgeGamer

u/MongoloidEsquire · 2 pointsr/gamecollecting

To open it you're going to need a 4.5 Screwdriver Security Bit commonly known as a gamebit. I bought the one linked and it worked fine for opening my N64.

Before opening it up though I would attempt to gently clean the contact with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. That usually does the trick for me. Even if it's busted, that's a pretty inexpensive cartridge and isn't incredibly difficult to find.

Good luck!

u/misscannabis · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon
  1. A classic.

  2. I love zombies because one zombie isn't much of a threat, but one hundred is, and they're just terrifying. My friend Harvey agrees that the CDC is totally unprepared for a zombie virus.

  3. If you like Mortal Kombat you should play this.

  4. My favorite zombie movie is the original Day of the Dead.

  5. To keep with the theme: I went to an art school and majored in creative writing. Every story I wrote at least alluded to zombies in some way. My teacher loved/hated my obsession. I wrote an 80 page novella I can't find my senior year about a zombie apocalypse. It was my best piece of writing yet.

For those who don't know what the mini Genesis is - much like myself yesterday before I spotted it at a thrift store - it is a Radica Arcade Legends Sega Genesis Volume II. It takes 4 AA batteries and has the following games:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • The Ooze
  • Gain Ground
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Columns
  • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle

Here's a screenshot of the menu. Gain Ground and Columns are two of my all-time favorite Genesis games - I was a bit floored when I found out that this funky mini Genesis actually had Gain Ground on it.

These little bastards fetch a pretty penny on Amazon and eBay - I got father and son, if you will, for $8. Of course, the battery cover is missing - oh well, it works just fine.

The rest of yesterday's haul includes:

PS1 (7501) w/hookups, 2 controllers, memory card and Croc: Legend of the Gobbos ($10)

5-screw Top Gun and Tennis + 32X Mortal Kombat II ($10)
u/joeblow2006 · 2 pointsr/RetroPie

Best bet is a retro USB Genesis controller. Thankfully, my favorite one is still available at a reasonable price: https://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-GN6-Premium-Controller-Genesis-sega/dp/B00HM3QAWK/. It seems like recently all the good USB controllers I would recommend are either not in stock or the price skyrocketed.

u/MHzBurglar · 3 pointsr/retrogaming

It's available for pre-order but it doesn't release until September 19th.

If you want an affordable emulated system, this is probably the best one to go with though. The emulation is being handled by M2, who focus on quality, and the game selection is shaping up to be really good. Chances are that someone will also develop an exploit to add extra games just like the NES, SNES and Playstation classic systems had.

u/pikachuuuuu · 4 pointsr/GirlGamers

Here's the shells:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VHCRH5Y/

Also here's the tool kit I used, and I absolutely recommend getting this too because I can't imagine doing this without having all the extra little tools for making it easier.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XP8FMM2/

The texture feels nice, they're kind of a soft touch type plastic. It scratched a bit around the screws in the back because the screws the Joy Cons are made with feel like they're made of friggin chalk or something and strip super easily so there was some screwdriver slippage that caused a bit of damage. Not really noticeable though.

u/Nakida1 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I've found cheap Xbox controllers on sale that have bluetooth for quite a bit cheaper, but regardless I can understand the concern. I use xbox controllers for PC anyway so I had them lying around. I've used a couple third party controllers on my switch as well as Xbox ones, but all the third party ones I used are wired.

https://www.amazon.com/ESYWEN-Controller-Adjustable-Compatible-Bluetooth/dp/B07JWHVHLQ seems interesting and quite cheap and fits what you need.

I can't comment on broader compatibility, but my best guess when looking is just go off reviews, that's typically what i've done.

u/m1kepro · 6 pointsr/SEGAGENESIS

The incomplete, ever expanding Genesis startup guide:

First, determine if you've got a Genesis, Genesis 2, or Genesis 3. For a Genesis 1, the instructions are a little different. For the 2 and 3, they're the same. Here we go.

For the Genesis 1, you want to buy two cables. This cable gives you your video. This cable gives you stereo audio from the Genesis headset jack.

For the Genesis 2/3, Stereo sound is built into the AV hookup, so you only need this one cable. This is not the same cable you'd buy for the Genesis 1. The hookup is completely different.

Make sure, whatever you do, that you avoid an RF adapter. They'll put your games on the screen, but the quality isn't nearly as nice.

Now for games. Here's a random sampling of few favorites for you: Aladdin, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Ecco the Dolphin, The Lion King, Mortal Kombat II Phantasy Star IV, Phelios, Ristar, Rocket Knight Adventures, and X-Men.

As for the controller, you can find one on Amazon just as easily as the cables.

u/Slogfarts · 1 pointr/gadgets

You'd be able to play the Game Gear or Master System versions, yeah. Not the Genesis versions.

Unless you're really wanting it to be something that fits on a keychain, I'd recommend this instead:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XWD59LP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_uhNFAbC88X4S5

It has all the Sonic games from the Genesis plus basically all of the other popular games from the console, you can load ROMs if there are games you want that aren't already on it, and it's an officially licensed product. It's also a bit cheaper and is available right now. That said, it won't play any Nintendo games.

Hope that helps.

u/Shadowtek · 2 pointsr/retrogaming

There are a few things. First strongly consider the new NES Classic mini system coming out. It has HDMI out and classic Nintendo games. https://www.nintendo.com/nes-classic

Secondly most Retro game consoles like SNES/N64 have composite out as well with the red/white/yellow cable. You can plug these into a modern HDTV by putting the yellow cable into the Green component plug (if you don't have a yellow hook up).

Also there are several Controllers out there that have emulators built in so you plug it into a PC and can load games.

Also some of these might be good, plug and play arcade stick games. They are fairly cheap fun so if they get destroyed it's not the end of the world. https://www.amazon.com/Pac-Man-Connect-Play-Classic-Games/dp/B0104G9K4Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1469453739&sr=1-1

u/ultimateman55 · 1 pointr/retrogaming

Eternal Champions, Aladdin, Sonic 1,2,3,Knuckles, Road Rash, Sub Terrania, Flashback, Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition, NHL '94.

Of course you can always just buy a Mega Everdrive for $54 off Amazon and be able to play any game you want: https://www.amazon.com/Mega-EverDrive-X3-Sega-Genesis/dp/B079X463L3/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=mega+everdrive+x3&qid=1562334362&s=gateway&sr=8-2

u/Whatah · 4 pointsr/patientgamers

I like the Sega version better. It has a good selection of games, comes with 2 controllers, and has a working cartridge slot so you can use your own actual games you might have stashed in the attic. It frequently goes on sale for ~$22.

https://www.amazon.com/Sega-Genesis-AtGames-Classic-Game-Console/dp/B0111WVVLM

The fact that my existing Wii classic controller hooks up to the little Nintendo is pretty cool though.

u/joyconthrowaway · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I just replaced the cases on my joycons and I can say that if you're technically minded, they aren't bad at all to disassemble and work on. The thumbsticks are actually fairly simple. Once you have the case open, the thumbsticks are held in place by two screws and attached to the main controller board by a ribbon cable. I used this video for help. You will need a triwing screwdriver to open the case and a small philips for the screws inside. I used this set and it worked well. If you google "joycon thumbstick replacement", there are tons of options for as low as 5-10 bucks. I'd say it's worth a shot to try and replace it. Good luck, friend!

Nobody has mentioned Prime Time yet? That game was the shit. I also loved Gameday 98 and thought it was waaaaay better than Madden.

China exporting a lot and importing little is a good thing

This means that chinese made goods are good enough to beat goods made in other countries, and that the goods they are producing are in demand.

If you look at chinese exports, they are no longer making $1 t-shirts , instead china is exporting consumer products with decent price tags, and they are doing well many bestsellers on amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MA5XZSG/

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00X5RV14Y/

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HTK1NCS/

When China has a lot of products like this, they would have high exports and low imports.

Both domestic consumers and foreign consumers will purchase the better product.

China is climbing the value chain

u/I_Gargled_Jarate · 1 pointr/gamecollecting

Cool! I kinda like the ones that have turned yellow with age. You can open those with a 4.5 mm security bit screwdriver! If you don't have one you can buy one for like 6 bucks online Here's a link to amazon for ya.

u/JustCaIlMeJohnny · 1 pointr/3DS

https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Screwdriver-Keten-Professional-Gamecube/dp/B06XP8FMM2

If 15 bucks is doable, pick up a kit along this line and a replacement c-stick. You'll might need a helping hand (I don't know the exact difference between OG and XL) but it's not that difficult a fix and definitely worth it in the end.

u/dpkimsecks · 1 pointr/gaming

If you have to clean it, and won't just buy it. Buy this.

http://www.amazon.com/Screwdriver-Security-GameCube-Consoles-Genesis-Master/dp/B000F78NBQ

And open it up, be careful of the electronics. Take it apart, clean the shell, and put it back together. It's an easy assembly. Shouldn't be too hard.

Yeah the ones they send with the shells are crap. I used this phillips head screwdriver and this set which included the triwing screwdriver I needed as well as a couple other useful tools like tweezers and a pry bar. Originally I tried using the screwdrivers that came with the shell but ended up stripping one of the phillips head screws on my console. Luckily the guy at my local electronics shop got it out for me in under 10 minutes and only charged me $5. He actually told me when he does shell swaps he prefers to use 000 size phillips and triwing screwdrivers instead of 00 sized ones (the size the screws actually are) because they're prone to stripping. At that point though I had already ordered the other ones and thankfully didn't have any issues with them.

u/krabstarr · 45 pointsr/gaming

The RetroGEN Adaptor is the one I know of. Now you too can play Genesis games on your Super Nintendo! Includes a region switch for Megadrive games.

u/FatBoyLilPeeper · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

A triwing screwdriver. There’s a great kit on amazon

Nintendo Screwdriver Set

u/Aunty_Fascist · 3 pointsr/PS4

It's really easy to do yourself. There are kits on Amazon that have the tools if you don't have the specific torx drivers. Once you get the case open you can just wipe the dust out with microfiber cloth on the cases and q-tips on the fans, maybe dipped in a little rubbing alcohol. I didn't change the thermal paste on mine and it was fine. Cost me less than $20 all together to DIY it. Here's a pictoral walkthrough.

ETA: This is the kit I got off Amazon, $12.99.

It's already been done for NES (via the Innovation Super 8 and the RetroPORT Adapter), the Sega Genesis (via the RetroGEN Adapter), and GBA (via the Super Retro Advance Adapter). The major difference being that those have their own video output and basically just use the SNES for controller input and power.

u/Kroooooooo · 5 pointsr/gamecollecting

Looks like they can sell for about 300-400 on eBay. I'd invest in a Nintendo screwdriver set so you can take a picture of the insides. That way you can confirm that it's a genuine cartridge (it should have Nintendo logos on it, things like that). A lot of big money collectors will shy away from any game they can't see the board on.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nintendo-Screwdriver-Keten-Professional-Security/dp/B06XP8FMM2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1526046559&sr=8-2&keywords=nintendo+screwdriver

Something like this is what you need.

Also, if those guys reckon they could sell it for 2k, offer it to them for 1k. Even if they haggle you'd end up way above the mark.

u/emilsgnik · 5 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Hey u/GeomonLover.

If you're keen to pull off the shells of the JoyCon to paint them, you're going to need what's called a 'Triwing Screwdriver' used to assemble/reassemble various Nintendo products.

You can buy the screwdriver separately, or you can get it as part of a set. For example, I replaced my JoyCon shell yesterday using this set off Amazon. To that end, I don't imagine that you could buy this particular screwdriver at Home Depot, but my intuition could be wrong. I hope you get it figured out / that I was able to help!

u/spire-hunter · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Hyperkin's 6-button controllers are almost as good as the original. They're nearly identical, and are the best third-party controllers I've used. They're super cheap and it looks like some people get bad ones, but you can always send them back to Amazon if they don't work for you. I've used one for a few years with no issues.

I don't know if this is the cheapest place to buy them, but these are the ones I'm talking about.

u/manfromharm · 1 pointr/technology

You mean something like this? This even works with Genesis carts but it only outputs composite video and only mono and that's usually the case with these rereleased consoles; they're built so cheap that they usually end up inferior to the original hardware in someway.

Hopefully Nintendo has some sort of quality control but I'm not expecting any filter-free emulation or high quality upscaler.

u/Kichigai · 1 pointr/Justrolledintotheshop

> It's like saying Ford/GM/Dodge/etc. use Phillips head screws because it was easier than making their own screwdriver.

Unless you're Nintendo, Sega, Apple, or Microsoft. Then it's totally doable because you're not too busy building cars. They use Phillips because they have dealers with repair shops that they can't cut the knees out from under.

u/digiplay · 2 pointsr/nintendo

I bought this kit to clean up my buttons cause they were sticky.

It wasn't too hard to take apart and put back together as long as you are careful. But do this at your own discretion.

All it does is give the items their own buttons. As far as attacks, all you need it 3 buttons. But speaking of controllers. You can get a hyperkin 6 button controller for 9 bucks on amazon and it’s a great controller

I use the Retro Duo Protable. Won't play Mega Drive games, but it'll play NES and SNES. Genesis games are possible but you need to buy the "Gen" adapter.

They’re just cheap amazon ones! they work well, though. I’m sure they won’t last forever, but I’m not about to spend hundreds on a set of cans.

If you have the correct gamebit (screw driver bit) you can easily open the console and just pop both the reset and power buttons out and give them a thorough cleaning. Here's the bit http://www.amazon.com/Screwdriver-Security-GameCube-Consoles-Genesis-Master/dp/B000F78NBQ

While you're at it if I may ask, I have an original 2001 Xbox, what tool would I need to open that sucker up?

Edit: https://www.amazon.com/Keten-Screwdriver-Nintendo-Professional-Security/dp/B06XP8FMM2/

Would that work on an original Xbox you know?

Here's the link to the screwdriver. I'm on mobile so I can't make the link smaller.

The crack inside of the n64 is strange to me, if you can open the n64 without damaging the shell more then I would check it out. Although I'm not what else you can do.

It appears it does. Although, I don't know the context of the waves.

Btw the controllers use infrared sensors so you have to point them at the console. Complete garbage

The one he has been playing lately was this

I have not heard him complaining about input lag with it. Are all new "consoles" emulator based with low processing power an lots of input lag? Even those with a cartridge bay to play original games?

Saturn. Then I'd get one of these bad boys and play all the genesis I want on my SNES.

Both seem to have a lot of positive feedback, your best bet if you want gaming headphones in particular. Mic is also fairly decent for the price that you're paying judging by reviews on YT.

Generally cloth pads are okay no matter if good quality office pads or ones made for gaming (even no name brands that offer king-sized ones work), but it's the size that makes the difference. You can get a cheap mid-size Roccat Taito or a QcK+ for 10 bucks. If you wanna go the hard pad route make sure you don't throw your money at the wrong pad:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1507448/top-available-hard-cloth-mouse-pads

That's for cloth pads, plastic pads for office use are more or less absolute crap and cheaply made.

You need precision triwing to open 8 screws on back panel and precision Phillips head to loosen the dock via screws inside.

I already had one of each from a set I bought off Amazon years ago specifically for Nintendo hardware since they all use tri-wing.

This is the set I own.

Perhaps one of these ?

Official Sega product, will probably be hacked with a few weeks or months, so you can add your own games.

A few tips if you give it a try:

  1. This tool kit is great. It had everything I needed plus some things I didn't know I needed, and was only like $13.

  2. Don't do it on anything you can't afford to break. I made that mistake when I tried to do this on Gamecube controllers as a kid. Among others, like not using primer and clear coat.

  3. ZL and ZR are a pain to get off, and it'll sound and feel like you broke something when you do. Then they're a pain to get back on, and it'll also sound and feel like you broke something when you do.

  4. Start with the left Joycon. The right one is harder.

  5. Don't do what I've done and forget to reattach one of the ribbons before closing it up. It really sucks when you think you're done, test it, and realize you need to open it up again.
