Oh hi Techfoxninja,

I have a few things I'd recommend, I'm a hiker and jogger myself. My first two recommendations? Good shoes and good socks. I personally do most of my running on roads but for hiking I use Keens yes they seem pricey but I bought a pair used at an REI garage sale and they're still kicking, before that I had a pair last three years with no issues.

Smart wool makes awesome socks, I'd actually suggest going to real store and looking at them, hence the lack of a useful link. I have a pair of running socks by them that I swear by.

If you're doing day hikes it's always important to carry a small pack and plenty of water. The North Face Jester is both a good hiking bag and even a good school bag, and is another item that will last for a few good years.

If you get a decent bag, a Platypus will fit nicely into it, and you'll stay hydrated well into your walks.

It's been brought up before, but yes, headlamps are really important, I also have a Nebo light that works really well and can clip on to most bags.

Next? A good yet light jacket, for interment weather. North Face does OK, but Marmot, Columbia and Patagonia are good brands as well.

I don't know how big your gift card is, and you may be hesitant to blow it on one expensive item, but trust me, as I get older my camping/hiking supplies just grow, and a lot of this stuff has a longer life span than you'd expect.

Here are some videos:

Haile running

natural running tutorial

You can analyze their forms here, look how efficient and smooth they are:

Frank shorter

Abebe Bikila

You see how frank seems to be leaning forward and his legs move almost like a wheel, rhythmically? He isn't running across the ground, he's falling and catching himself with each step. Running is continuous falling. He isn't leaning forward or craning his back either, with proper form your body ends up in that lean and your legs end up at a certain natural cadence. If you aren't fighting your body then running faster comes easily. Actual running can be enjoyable and easy, not painful. Much of the pain comes from improper/inefficient running technique. It's the difference between going with the grain and against it. Efficient running is going with the grain.

I remember when I first took off these awful shoes that I had that were really hurting me back in the day (they weren't even the correct size and they were puma sneakers) and I ran barefoot and went way faster. My heart would beat and my breath would have trouble keeping up with how fast I was going but my legs had no problem with it. I also noticed my cadence increased and I went much faster. This was in like tenth grade, before I did cross country my junior year. I was just getting into running.

When you run with proper form, you don't need to try to move your legs faster, they end up moving faster on their own. You get around a 180 cadence (maybe slightly less or more). It doesn't have to be exact but it ends up being around that. Many people go slower, like 130 steps per minute, it's because they're running inefficiently. Look at all elite runners and they have a similar cadence and stride. Interestingly enough the world record holder for the 5000m and 10000m had a cadence of around 190 and it was around 215 for his final kick at the olympics. His stride remained the same.

When you run correctly it feels effortless, like you're gliding across the ground, flying almost. That first time you really get it right it feels amazing, when i've taken off shoes I felt like a weight had lifted off me (it had) and it was like my feet weren't there. When you don't have issues picking up your feet then you go faster and when you don't have an arch preventing your feet from naturally carrying you forward than you go faster.

If you look at most runners who are fast and even sprinters like Usain Bolt who dominate, you'll notice that their legs come up behind to their butts. This happens more with faster races than longer races like marathons, but it's a pattern. This is because these runners have good hip mobility and hip extension. Having a posterior pelvic tilt or weak glutes and a weak back can lead to an inability to have that same range of motion. The legs coming up behind you to your butt is a sign of efficient form and it means your legs are moving like slingshots and you aren't wasting energy to go as fast as you're going, you're being efficient. You'll notice in Kenenisa Bekele's world record 5000m run his legs come up right behind his butt. His hip extension and hip mobility is on point. If your hip flexors are weak and your hip extensors are short and you have weak glutes or pelvic tilt issues then you will not be able to do that. Of course running properly can strengthen all those muscles.

I would recommend running in dirt or grass and seeing what it feels like, you can even wear socks. I've gone running in socks before. When you run properly it will feel like it hurts more than usual. It's like if you sit with good posture and it hurts more than slouching. Slouching is still worse for you. You will eventually get used to it, but don't run inefficiently because it hurts less at first. It will be better for you in the long run. (get it? long run? ayyy)

If you don't stretch after biking you will have to stretch after running or injury is a risk. DO NOT stretch before, only stretch afterwards. There are dynamic stretches or warm ups you can do before running but just starting to run is a warm up itself. No static stretching, one exception which you may need to make is stretching your quads by bending at your knee and bringing your foot behind you to your butt. Like this. That's the one stretch that's okay to do before running.

I have used an exercise bike in the past when I was just starting to exercise. I don't like riding regular bikes because I'm not that good at it and I have trouble crossing streets. I don't like the thin road bikes because they require slouching and a bit of pelvis tucking and that bothers me, it may be different for you. I just think running is better overall for your body while biking works less muscles, but they both are cardio and cardio is good for you.

This is the exact model of shoes that worked really well for me during track season in xc. I set most of my PRs in this shoe and I had the best luck with them. I got injured later because I purchased a shoe with a terrible arch that rolled my ankles outward, but these shoes are great. They are neutral running shoes, they may have more on the bottom than your average minimalist shoe or sock, but they are neutral and good for practicing good form, although you may have trouble landing on your toes at first if you use these types of shoes. Of course going exactly on your toes isn't ideal, it may be good to get the transition going and prevent you from heel striking if you currently do, but you should be landing on your forefoot. That means slightly in front of the middle area of your foot, definitely not the heel though.

Just remember looking for neutral shoes with little heel rise or arch is the best way to go. Flat, neutral shoes, no rise. Not shoes for under or overpronation, neutral works great, it's closer to being barefoot than shoes with huge arches or angles. When it comes to form these shoes may be better, depending on how much you run the one I linked may get worn out quickly, but surface and how hard you pound the pavement as well as how often matters. If the shoes gets torn apart you obviously don't want to keep using it, rather get a new one. I think I used mine 3 or more months, but I couldn't afford newer ones, I would have replaced them earlier. Let's say if you're running 60 miles a weeks than 2-3 months should be good.

If you are going to get minimalist shoes instead of those ones then avoid the five finger shoes! They spread your toes apart and that will hurt your running and make you run weakly and may even cause injury. Having your toes apart in socks or barefoot is fine because they are apart anyway, but having them apart in those shoes will prevent you from "kicking" off the ground or having any power in your run, when I used those five finger gimmicks I ended up doing a weird walk/waddle run because I couldn't push off my toes, and trying would probably hurt them. They were forced apart. If going for minimalist shoes, go for ones that keep your toes together, like this or the ones in the suggestions.

FYI my normal shoe size and my spike size was 10 but my running shoe size was 9.5. A good shoe will still screw you over if it doesn't fit you properly, so be sure to get a proper fit.

The link you posted is not the same shoes the original BIFL post was made about. The shoes the OP has there are these, but it looks like they are no longer produced.

However, I can tell you that the Bass Buckinghams that you linked to are great shoes. They look good, go with pretty much anything, and are very comfortable. I have 2 pairs myself. I would not pay $85 for them though, they almost always sell for around $70. Bass does the same thing as many brands and has inflated high MSRPs so that everything can always be on "Sale".

You are in luck though, the same shoes are currently $60 on amazon and 6pm for most sizes. That is a pretty good price for them and a great value. I don't think you could find anything better for $60.

u/ggill1313 · 4 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Get some Iron Rangers factory seconds. They go on sale from time to time down to $160. Great, great boot. I got some of the Red Wing insoles for around $25 that made a world of a difference as far as heat is concerned. Size .5-1 size down. If you have wide feet, don't size down to .5 size down, depending on your foot size.

You also have the Chippewa Service Boot. I got my brother some for Christmas and they are actually really nice. The "Cordovan" option looks lovely and is a lot more versatile than one might think as it's a more burgundy color. But it really works in occasions where you would wear this sort of thing.

The Thorogoods Moc Toe is a great boot as well for a different look. These can't be dressed up as easily IMO, but good boots the same. Red Wing has a similar boot if you'd prefer the look of it. It's also a good boot.

For all of these, get some nice wool socks. Darn Tough makes some good ones but I don't like the looks. Anonymousism also makes some good stuff provided you like the colors, but IMO are a bit overpriced. My favorite wool socks came from J. Crew last season. They are thick, warm, look good, and were reasonable priced.

If you have any other questions, let me know!

Word.

The Park Ave is probably a bit overkill unless you need it for black suit wear regularly. Which is not to say you can't dress it down, as most people won't care at all, but if you want to get something a a little more interesting you can probably get away with it just fine.

I personally prefer things with broguing on them just because they're more interesting. The AE Strand is in a style I like quite a bit (and which MFA recommends regularly). It's got what's known as a "medallion" on the cap, which just means it has a cool little perforation pattern. A nifty thing about medallions is that each shoe maker tends to have their own trademark design, so you can get a cool unique looking shoe even if the styling is standard. AE's medallion is relatively plain, but just something fun to look for.

One last note on dress shoe stuff in general that I don't think is in the sidebar: Full leather shoes are made on different "lasts," which are just molds that the leather is shaped over. Thus when you see something on a dress shoe that tells you what last it is, that's telling you the shape. Note that it might be tricky to figure out which last a shoe is on if you're not at a specialty store where the salespeople really know their shit, but you can usually look it up online easily. Different lasts fit differently, so you can't ever assume that if you fit a size X perfectly in one shoe you'll be a size X in any other dress shoe, even if it's from the same manufacturer. I highly advise you to go try shoes on in person if you can. You'll feel like a dick trying on a bunch of shoes and getting sizing help when you don't intend to buy at full price (which you should not need to do), but it's a pricey decision so it won't seem weird if you tell them you need to think about it.

So anyway, on to deal searching. If you want to step it up from Florsheims, know that while Allen Edmonds basically all retail for $325 you shouldn't have trouble finding them for cheaper if you're diligent and patient. A couple weeks ago Amazon was selling a lot of them 30% off, for example. Nordstrom or Neiman's (can't remember which) should be having a half-yearly men's sale right after Christmas, too, which I think is 25% off.

This guy on Styleforum, though, sells new versions of the most popular AE models for $245 (25% off). He's got the Park Ave, the Fifth Ave (which is the Park Ave with a line of brouging on the toe cap), and the Strand. Haven't used him, but he's got good reviews. These guys usually get overstock, floor samples, etc. so it's legit.

You can also be on the lookout for "seconds" or "second quality" shoes in any brand, which are shoes with some sort of defect that kept them from passing QA. They're usually sold at a way deeper discount than the defect merits, and often the defect isn't noticeable. Usually to get ahold of these directly from the company you have to have a factory outlet or something near you, though.

Depends on what you're talking about but yeah in terms of dress shoes, these shoes are classy and fashionable and everything else is pretty much seen as plebeian imitation. Is what it is, but these are the fashionable choices for dressed up casual all the way to suit wear.

For example, /r/malefashionadvice (used to? still does?) have an affection for Allen Edmond Strands, like these:http://www.amazon.com/Allen-Edmonds-Strand-Cap-Toe-Oxford/dp/B001TDL0GK

Those styles of lighter brown with detail can be worn down to jeans, or worn up to certain types of suits. They catch the attention of people who know shoes and judge based on shoes.

>Durability is not an issue because fashion wise you need to swap out your shoes every so often

To be honest, these styles of menswear aren't going to go out of style, or at least they haven't over very many decades. There are styles/trends in shoewear (avoid boxy toes) but smart purchases will avoid it because while some certain attributes may be trendy, the overall style of the hand welted leather dress shoe has been fashionable for centuries.

And durability is an issue with these shoes much like it is with a suit. You don't buy new suits every year or two, why buy new shoes every year or two?

I agree with splitplug. A plainer shoe would be a better investment; they're more versatile. A nice cap-toe, balmoral, somewhat shiny black shoe would ideal. The Johnston and Murphy Melton can be had for $125 (most sizes anyway) on amazon. It's a leather soled, Goodyear welted shoe. They'll last years and are among the most quality shoes that can be bought at the price point. The next step you would be to something like AE for a few hundred, and then Alden's, etc. for a few hundred above that. Either way a Goodyear welted shoe (actually stitched on sole, not glued) is a steal for $125. I got mine recently. They haven't seen much use yet, but I've heard great things, and I'm happy with the way they feel. I hope this helps. I really recommend them. They're a good investment.

u/Nicholie · 12 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Well, what type of boot you want? There's the [Chippewa Apache Lacer that's quite popular.] (http://www.amazon.com/Chippewa-20065-Handcrafted-Lace-Up-Chocolate/dp/B0036VN8N6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370619118&sr=8-1&keywords=chippewa+gq) Near $100 depending on your size. Then the ever-prominent Clark's Desert Boot. Well under $100.

Or if you're wanting more dressy, JCPenney's wingtip boot gets suprisingly good marks despite its low price. No link because it's not online, but I've seen it roaming around my local store.

These are all pretty popular MFA selections and safe bets. Don't forget if you order from Amazon to sign up for there shoe mailing list and you'll get a 20% off code. Note you can create a throwaway email & amazon account and get a new code mailed to you if you've already used this once.

PS. Yes you can wear brown boots with a blue shirt. Blue (especially navy) is the most flexible color of the rainbow.

u/zoetrophic · 4 pointsr/malefashionadvice

There's really nothing safer than a mid-grey or navy suit, both of which I'd assume are interchangeable for both the interviews themselves and the meet and greet. If you're looking for brands and don't mind shopping online, Suitsupply is a great place to start (check out their purple line for <$500). The Copenhagen, Washington and Soho are their slim fits. eHaberdasher's Benjamin sartorial suit is fully canvassed, but the shipping on mine took a very long time (~15 days) and that may not be acceptable for your needs.

In-store, check out J. Crew's Ludlow suits (on a discount), J. Crew Factory's Thompson suit (by far the cheapest option here), Brooks Brothers Madison (the most expensive), or Banana Republic's Monogram. All but Brooks cost under $500.

For shoes, Johnston & Murphy's Melton is a good cheap option, but only if you don't feel like you couldn't already swing the black oxfords you own. Brown Allen Edmonds Park Avenues are a significant step up in quality and price, but you can't go wrong with a pair of brown cap toe shoes. They'll last a very long time.

I really only wear cheap belts and don't wear ties at all, so someone else could be a lot more valuable in those areas. Best of luck!

> I wear Keen shoes, specifically because they fit wide feet better.

Yes sir! Me too! And they last for a while and don't hurt my feet at all from the shape. When they do finally break down, they break down good. But up until that point, they are a tank of a shoe. I actively bike/hike in the foothills of Colorado in those shoes, plus I literally wear it for everything else too. I have taken these shoes into some really bad environments and these shoes don't fail me. For someone with problematic feet, I can't find a better shoe on the market.

I will be going on my third pair of these in the fall: https://www.amazon.com/KEEN-Targhee-Hiking-Gargoyle-Midnight/dp/B005D4U04Y/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2CSA7YWPESHXM&keywords=keen+targhee+ii+mens&qid=1557687574&s=gateway&sprefix=keen+targhee%2Caps%2C211&sr=8-1

And the only reason I am replacing them is because the were burned by accident and don't look as nice, but not because they are failing. As long as Keen keeps making these shoes, I will never buy another pair.

If I can get the shape, style, construction, reliability in a SPD pedal, I would virtually never take the shoes off but to sleep.

Keen's sandal hasn't gotten good reviews at all, and they might have even discontinued them: https://www.amazon.com/KEEN-Commuter-Cycling-Sandal-Gargoyle/product-reviews/B00RLY8Z6Y/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_hist_1?pageNumber=1&filterByStar=one_star

And the Keen Newports look like a similar shape and style of the soul: https://www.amazon.com/Keen-Mens-Newport-Sandal-Black/dp/B0006FSKF6/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=Keen&qid=1557687868&s=gateway&sr=8-2

So I would probably just do the Newports in the Summer and the Targhee's the rest of the time, but I need to clip in at this point. What I need is for Keen to make the Newports in an SPD pedal, but I don't think they will do that just for me ;)

If it wasn't for knee problems and the need to clip in at this point, I would just keep using Keen shoes and find a good sandal and just keep riding on platform pedals which I like better anyway.

But it's all about the knees now :(

> I'd rather be comfy than be a walking billboard for polo or some shit.

I know I probably won't change your mind, so maybe this is really for anyone else who may be reading this comment thread, but you can be comfortable without looking like a walking billboard. It's actually really easy. Right now, I'm wearing:

  • A shirt similar to this one (cost: $25) with the sleeves rolled up. No logos.
  • These pants from Banana Republic (cost: $44). They're more comfortable than jeans and work with everything jeans do. Again, no logos.
  • Clarks Desert Boots (cost: $60). Less comfortable than sneakers? Sure, but they work with anything and they last a long time. Still no logos.

Is it the most exciting look? No, but it's pretty universally agreeable, relatively inexpensive, and I have no concerns about looking like I'm homeless.

    > Also, if you can't go a day without a shower before turning into a smelly piece of shit then I think it's you who needs a hygiene lesson.

This is about appearance, not smell. If you look homeless because your hair looks bad when you're not showering, then you probably have to shower more. I have short hair, I can get away with wetting my hair and fixing it in a few minutes.

    > By all means, though, feel free to make snarky comments over the internet about someone else's life you have no idea about. I'm sure it will better you as a person somehow.

I was asking a legit question because people assume you look homeless and you said you live out of your car despite staying at friends' places. But, sure, snarky.

That's a ~130$ outfit not including socks and underwear, though. Atm I'm wearing a $10 dollar shirt, a pair of 4 for $20 basketball shorts, and my shoes were $45 I believe? Maybe these are my $60 shoes, idk. They're similar, but these ones look less fancy and are more comfy. Not that I'm saying spending money on your appearance is a bad thing, but it's not something I'm interested in.

>This is about appearance, not smell. If you look homeless because your hair looks bad when you're not showering, then you probably have to shower more. I have short hair, I can get away with wetting my hair and fixing it in a few minutes.

It just depends. My hair can get frizzy. I have long curly hair. I usually have it under a beanie or if it's warm outside I have it up. Plus I usually only wash it every other day, otherwise it gets dry. I wash it, put some product in and style it, and if I put it up or in a hat the next day for a few hours before letting it back down it retains its shape from the previous day quite well. I live in the conservative south, so long hair alone is enough to raise an eye over depending on who owns the eye.

>I was asking a legit question because people assume you look homeless and you said you live out of your car despite staying at friends' places. But, sure, snarky.

Live out of the car meaning I can keep everything I need in my car while I couch surf. You didn't exactly take caution in phrasing your question, so why would I in phrasing my response? I hadn't, and still really haven't, been awake for long, and I enjoy poking at people on the internet to see what happens.

Also, I don't care if someone thinks I look homeless. If anything it probably keeps them from talking to me, and that's alright to me.

u/arturo_lemus · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I had a similar uniform im training for a job. If done wrong you can look like a busboy/valet. Things to focus on: belt, watch, shoes. You have to make sure your shirt and pants fit obviously.

But you can add a touch of personality with your watch and belt. Keep everything black since your shoes are black.

Black leather belt with a gold or silver face. If you get a black leather watch, make sure the metal matches your belt ( gold with gold, silver with silver). You could get black alligator or lizard watch/belt for extra pizzaz. I wore a gold pinky ring but that was personal taste , its up to you.

As for your shoes: i would go with black captoe oxfords but thats the most formal and would look better with a full suit. You could always get derbys or loafers but please please don't get any cheap, square toed, rubber soled shoes. Your shoes are the most important part. It will make or break you, but also i understand its just for work.

Make sure you keep them shined and make sure your shirt is always crisp and not wrinkled

  • Maker/Model: Allen Edmonds Park Avenue in Black
  • Size: 11D (US)
  • Price: $250 Shipped
  • Wears/Condition: Firsts. New in Box. Never worn.
  • Images: Album 1 Also seen in this album I made comparing them to the Jos. A. Bank Version.

    -

  • Maker/Model: Alden 975 (LWB in Shell for J.Crew)
  • Size: 10.5 (US)
  • Price: $375 Shipped
  • Wears/Condition: Used, but in very good condition.
  • Notes/Images: I bought these from a SF user and they are in great condition. They are in use, but I'd prefer a smaller size so I'm looking to trade or sell. Album here. They come with box + bags. I'm not desperate to sell so price is pretty firm. Alternatively, I would be willing to trade for the same shoe in a 10 or some other Alden Shell in a Barrie 10, like the Perforated Cap Toe Boot with cash making up differences in prices.

I work in a blue collar job. Generally when I want to look a little nicer I'll throw on a chambray shirt over a white V-neck with some dark or raw denim (a cheap pair, think Gap or Uniqlo). I still wear my steel toes but I prefer a minimalist style boot that, I think, looks a little nicer. Like [this] (https://www.amazon.com/Chippewa-Mens-Steel-20066-Lace-Up/dp/B00413PX3G) or this which are my current pair (Red Wing's customer service is the greatest but thats an unrelated story) Honestly I have zero reason to do it but sometimes you want to elevate from a T-shirt and ripped jeans y'know.

I live in the Midwest and work in a business casual workplace. It's cold for roughly 6 months out of the year, and it's pretty damn snowy. I have a budget of $350-$400 to spend, but I'd really like to be able to wear these boots six months out of the year for 5+ years. My last pair of boots were $40 and lasted that long.

I like these boot styles, and as I understand it these companies are some of the best ones that offer boots in the $200-$400 price range.

Any recommendations looking at these boots? I'm still getting familiar with terminology, possible defects, etc.

New boots came in! They're Chippewa Apaches in 9.5 with a coat of Obernaufs. Desperately trying to break them in while sick from home (walking out for groceries in them later, we'll see how that is). Fairly deep lug sole, the standard Chippewa 6" should look a lot less rugged in comparison but I appreciate the height boost this gives me. Yes, I'm standing on my coffee table to get the fit pic. I'll try to make a more detailed review of this in a post when I Have time.

Rest of the outfit is pretty standard, Levi's Rigids (just a week in and already getting slight fades), band tee covered up by black/navy Uniqlo fleece from last year.

I don't want you to feel like "oh shit", but there are a few things:

  1. I noticed you're not keeping your arms and upper back tight. Ideally, you want those locked in and tight throughout the entire movement. It's going to suck and be super uncomfortable for a little while, but you'll feel more stable and secure once you're over the initial suck of it.

  2. You're not hitting depth. What goes through your mind as you're descending? When I had problems hitting depth, I'd have significant pain in my right hip flexor and left groin. I found out that I have lateral pelvic tilt and now I do band distractions for about 10-20 minutes before each squat session. Changed my squatting life. See these links for more info:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRmT1mja4uk
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3b9Nz-G0Kw

  3. Learn the Valsalva Maneuver, aka properly bracing your core in preparation for a lift. I tighten my core by "tucking my tail" and lowering my ribcage, breath deep a few times, then inhale to the point where I feel my lower back expand. Hold that, keep your upper back and arms tight, then squat.

    http://www.kingofthegym.com/valsalva-maneuver/

  4. Looks like you're squatting in tennis shoes. Either squat in flats or get some olympic lifyting shoes. I use the adipowers (red and black baby!), but there are many different brands out there. Nike has some great ones, but they're definitely pricey. The adipowers go on sale sometimes for about 50% off, so keep your eye out if you don't have a ton of expendable income.

Looking to get some Clarks Men's Bushacre 2 (prefer them over the CDB) and was looking at them on amazon. The beeswax on there looks like peanut butter but I've heard people say that the ones they receive look more like the beeswax CDBs. Has anybody bought them and can confirm, and whats a good way to dress casual with the boots?

Thanks

u/Midgetforsale · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I got these Thorogoods a couple weeks ago. I'm LOVING them. Really really nice boots. And do yourself a favor and get some mink oil with whatever you end up buying. That stuff is amazing for leather.

u/EsotericHabit · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Clark Dessert Boots in Beeswax are great with dark jeans.

If you want something different, Allen Edmonds makes great shoes (I really love the McAllisters).

I like to bring my minimalist trail runners (http://www.amazon.com/Merrell-Trail-Glove-Barefoot-Running/dp/B005N4IUL4). The are light and pack super small and can be used for short-medium length hikes. I like that they are designed to be comfortable without socks and have a sandal type feel that is nice after a long ride.

u/Pre-Owned-Car · 3 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

5 years alternating between upstate new york and new york city so lots and lots of snow. I might suggest the utility version if you see really heavy snow. My one problem with the boots is that I wore the sole down somewhat and the traction is now lacking. They are waterproof, but they aren't super warm seeing as it's just leather and no insulation. But that's pretty normal for work boots, even the more expensive kind. I recommend you wear them with wool socks if it gets really cold.

Note: They're also more brown than these pictures make them look. They look like this irl. EDIT: That picture is actually of the katadihn engineers boots by ll bean but I'm pretty sure it's literally the same boot + a toe box and it's also manufactured by chippewa.

u/Jedibrad · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Blucher mocs, wingtips, boots (option 2), chukkas (option 2), penny loafers, and bucks (option 2 & option 3) are all some great options.

If you can, try to introduce him to slimmer pants in a darker wash -- perhaps some 511's or 513's in 'rigid dragon' or 'bastion' respectively? Combined with some new shoes, he'll look great. :)

u/pacodemu · 5 pointsr/festivals

Yup, these Keen's are my festy shoes.

Being waterproof is nice for when it rains and everything turns to mud and there is a decent amount of tread so you've got good grip when you're spun cookies and/or walking on wet grass.

The rubber part that comes over the toes is especially nice for kicking logs around the campfire when you can't find the pokey stick or to help to protect you when stumbling wooks step on your feet.

u/TheCrimsonGlass · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I've been wanting a nice, comfortable shoe. I've been on the fence between going cheap[er] with CDBs, because I've heard a lot of good things about their comfort, and these AE Strands. Any chance you can comment further on the comfort of the Strands (or even CDBs if you've worn them)?

u/JR_Shoegazer · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Most good boots are in a higher price range. Thorogood makes high quality boots for that price. They have moc-toe and plain-toe. The price range fluctuates online. If those don't work try Bexley or Golden Fox. Not sure how Golden Fox holds up construction wise or how comfortable they are. You're going to have a break in period on most boots so I wouldn't expect them to be comfortable right away.

u/SingingMadman · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Also, what do you think of these ones I've come across? I know most people here love the Bushacres, and I was about to get them when they were about U$52 like they were a few weeks ago which was about A$80 shipped or something ridiculous. However, I'm not sure if there are any alternatives within my budget.

Seavees 3 Eye Chukka - Walnut Oiled Leather: A$100 (~U$80) shipped, image

Clarks Bushacre 2 - Beeswax: U$66.67 + U$22.95 shipping = U$89.62 (~A$114) shipped

Tretorn Oken Leather Chukka: U$79.69 + U$13.77 = U$93.46 (~A$119), image

The first two seem safe options and I'm not particularly convinced by the last one; it looks cheap. However, I do like the sleekness and more "modern" design, and that it looks different from the typical chukka boot. That's not as important to me as actually getting a decent pair of shoes, though.

EDIT: I like the aesthetic of these Tretorn Garde Stovel Vinter GTX Boots, apart from the lining. But I've got a feeling my feet would cook inside them here in Australia.

EDIT 2: Any opinions on the Eastland-1955 Edition Sherman 1955 8" Boots?

u/_spacelynx_ · 2 pointsr/weightlifting

Hmmm which Romaleos were you using (2's vs 3's), and how did you feel (heavy/light, too stable/unstable, did you feel you were being pushed too forward)? Romaleos have typically been preferred if you have a wider foot, well the Romaleos 2's at least.

All things considered, my recommendation would be to go for an Adipower (1st gen) or Romaleos 2, however, both have now been discontinued. They were both superb lifters and most elite/profession lifters still use these lifters instead of the newer versions. So from the newer options, I would recommend you look into the Legacy Lifter or maybe even the Do-Win lifters ( Classic or More Modern). I know Adidas has new Adipower, but I have not done enough research or heard enough good things to make any comments or recommendations on.

I hope you find all this information helpful.

u/ehsu · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

For boots, the standard recommendations are the Clarks Desert Boot and Katahdin Engineer Boots. There are additional recommendations in the sidebar.

Plain tees are great if they fit well. People here seem to like Mossimo tees from Target, but the best choice really depends on your body type. Just try a bunch of different brands to figure out what works on your build.

u/lemondirgopie · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

Just bought a pair of their Barefoot Trail Gloves (women's) and fell in love. They are so comfortable! They aren't ugly like the Five Fingers, and have support, unlike my Vivobarefoot sneakers. They also have a mesh upper, which might be handy in the humid climate of Indonesia. My boyfriend also bought a pair and he has found it has helped his posture and back pain. They definitely seem to be high-quality, and I've so far experienced good customer service from Merrell.

http://www.amazon.com/Merrell-Mens-Barefoot-Trail-Glove/dp/B005N4IUL4

If you haven't worn minimalist shoes/don't go barefoot often, it's possible you might need a transition period to strengthen the different muscles, but it's definitely worth it.

At least you got some closure as to what happened.

The one time I was stood up, it was by a girl who had replied to my first message EDIT: she messaged ME first (what a bitch!), was very quick to give me her number and texted me a couple times between when we set the date and the day of the date itself. So I was pretty sure she wasn't going to flake, I mean, she had showed a bunch of interest, more than some girls have showed when they actually DID show for a date.

I get to the tea house we set to meet at, and she isn't there, so I text to say I am here and waiting outside. It was like five minutes before we were supposed to meet, so I assumed she hadn't showed up and then peaced out. 15 minutes later I text to say I'm still there and hope traffic wasn't too bad.

45 minutes later, I send her a text about how annoying it was to make me drive all the way out to her area to meet up only to have her disappear entirely. I told her she should have been an adult and let me know she wasn't interested and that she should really reflect on what she did (totally pulled out a teacher scolding)

Then I went to DSW and bought a sick pair of boots that were an amazing sale price. She disabled her account, probably so I wouldn't send her mean messages, then enabled it again a day or two later. I dropped by once more to appear on her visitors list and hopefully make her feel bad one more time before hiding her.

Lose the shoes lose the shirt, wear a nice button down preferably something darker to go with the pants find a nice brown belt and some nice leather shoes or something more like this if you want to look extra cool I would prefer you wear a watch with a brown leather strap if you have one, also dont bring the smokes of you unless you KNOW she smokes, I have found girls that don't smoke find that unattractive. Good luck
Edit: Also I recommend you check out the sidebar

u/BisCasToTheBone · 3 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I have no personal experience with these, but I'm putting on my detective hat. Amazon lists both, as well as another similar model called Brockton. Buckingham Pasadena Brockton

Here's what I can see: Each model has a different pattern on the sole. The Buckingham looks slightly smaller in the toe. The "welt" is different (Buckingham has a flat welt, while the other two have the appearance of a storm welt). The insole on the Buckingham looks to me like it might be leather, while the Pasadena's insole looks like some kind of fabric. The grain of the suede on the Buckingham looks smoother when I zoom in, so maybe nicer leather is most of what you're paying for on the Buckingham.

u/tPRoC · 6 pointsr/BuyItForLife

It's a method of fixing the sole of a shoe to the upper. It allows you to resole the shoe repeatedly, with relative ease, using a machine. Most shoe repair shops will have the necessary materials and tools to do this, and will often order the specific soles needed for your shoe as well.

Most shoes these days are built without a welt- the sole simply being glued to the upper. In the long run this basically means your ability to resole them is pretty shit. I suppose you could glue a new sole on to the upper but it wouldn't be very effective or durable.

You can extend the life of a well-made shoe by several years through a resoling. Some popular shoes with a "goodyear welt" include Chippewa Boots, Redwings, Allen Edmonds, and Clark's Desert Boot.

Goodyear welted shoes are not BIFL, but this is because no footwear is BIFL. Despite the bad information people on this sub parrot, you can only resole a shoe a finite amount of times before it becomes irreparable. That said, they are still more durable and will last longer than regular shoes, but you are paying a much higher pricepoint than usual. ($200 at minimum, maybe lower if you shoot for a less popular style or a factory second, or buy Clark's which are not meant to be a sturdy shoe.)

Another potential benefit is the ability to resole a shoe with a DIFFERENT sole than before. You can see some examples of that here, here, and here.

u/FeedbackThrowProp · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Need help between two shoes:

Allen Edmonds Walnut Strands or Herring Shoes Hampsteads. I find myself drawn more to the sleekness of the English style shoe whereas the Allen Edmonds seem almost clunky. I feel like my suit would work better with the Herring which is apparently made on a Loake last.

Problem is I've already ordered a pair of Allen Edmonds at an amazing price point ($170 USD for firsts), so maybe you can convince me that AEs are good enough, and I shouldn't go through the trouble of ordering something from England.

Thoughts?

u/MrBananaGrabber · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Yeah I mean darker brown should be alright.

It's such a MFA cliche and I feel like I'm on MFA circlejerk even for saying it, but have you looked at Clarks Desert Boots? They're like the staple shoe for what you want. They can be dressed up, dressed down, pretty much a do it all shoe that's cheap.

http://www.amazon.com/Clarks-Originals-Mens-Desert-Beeswax/dp/B002IFNVK6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341714315&sr=8-1&keywords=clarks+desert+boots

And be warned: they're going to strike you as ugly when you look at them. But remember, you wear them with pants, so they're going to look more like this when you actually try to wear them. I had an aversion to them when I started getting into fashion, but when I finally tried on a pair I loved them.

So I'm guessing comfortable dress shoes? Assuming outfit is wool slacks and a dress shirt.

Could go for some hybrid like the LunarGrand. There are a couple of more subdued options and I've seen a few different colors at Nordstrom Rack from time to time.

Maybe luck out on a sale for Red Wing Postman's?

I hate the design of Toms. I think espadrilles can look good, I have a pair of these which I love. But I really really dislike the toe on Toms. Every time I see that folded-over toe box it makes me think of a diaper.

*Sorry, I realized I didn't really help you with your post. It looks like you're looking for a deconstructed suede chukka. I found these vans, though I'm not in love with the sole. Also, it's recommended to death, but CDBs are great.

I personally own a pair and I love them. Since they're both made by Clark's, very similar in style to CDBS and lower in price, I think they're a perfect match for your brother.

Here's an album I found that compares Bushacres and CDBs.

Thorogood 6" Moc

Just as good as my redwing 875's but with slightly softer leather to make the break-in process much less painful, and they come with speed-laces. American made. They have steel toe and plain toe also, come with composite shanks.

Edit: Oh, and they're under $200.

Highly recommend.

Edit#2: Saw your post where you were looking for a non-boot. Keens are great all around hiking/durable shoe. Look into those.

My soul hurts every time I recommend these but Clark's Desert Boots sound like they would be perfect for you. They're so ubiquitous here because they're fairly cheap and extremely versatile and go with just about anything.

u/shoangore · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Value Village with Community Donations hooked up to them (not sure if they all have them) are great depending on location. The closest one to me (less than five minutes!) is stuck dead between three wealthier cities in the area, and I constantly find really good deals in my size.

AG pants with their tags still on (marked at $230) for $13 last month in my size. They also had these exact clark's chukkas with no wear on the soles that I snagged as well for $9. A little tight at the tip since I have wider feet, but I wasn't going to pass up that opportunity.

u/snowbucket · 17 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Chippewa makes some nice boots. I only have the non steel toe version with lugged soles, but I've beat the crap out of them and they're still going strong.

I use these for work and they are a little bulky, but they are really comfortable and the aluminum toe makes them real light.

u/Aerimorla · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

to me it looks like they have a lot of extra stitching and components. the dr. martens sole looks out of place and the shoe's shape is bulbous.

If you decide to go with the Chippewa go with the lug sole. The other ''flat'' sole is very slippery. If you get them from amazon you should be able to get 20% off as well. Buying Bushacres as my first pair of boots. Was thinking about adding in something else to cover shipping.

  • Chippewa (Which one though?) Look decent & are cheap. Seem to be recommended a lot.

  • Thorogoods: Looks decent. Cheap. Moc toe or plain? How bulky are these?

  • Doc Martens: Cheap, Slim, I like the look. Apparently the quality isn't that great?

Thoughts on these boots? Other recommendations are welcome!

If they are somewhat slim that would be preferable, as I'm rather skinny and have small-ish (9 US Vans) feet.

Welcome to MFA. Do you have time to talk about our lord and savior, CDB?

In all honesty, there's a reason these are memes at this point. CDBs have earned their place as a solid addition to any wardrobe trying to be more mature than sneakers while still keeping the jeans. I like Bushacres just as much as Desert boots, but they are both interchangeable in a wardrobe.

Seems like you've gotten a good deal of help with the first pair but I might be able to help you with pair #2. Vans actually makes a chukka style sneaker which isn't exactly like what you linked but has the same sneaker/boot hybrid silhouette. Also you could always try the MFA basic staple CDB or the slightly cheaper Bushacres. If none of these work for you do a search for "Chukka Sneakers" and spend some time shopping around/ doing research.

The price isn't that great for those. I'm seen them down around $100 somewhat frequently. Also think brown is a much more versatile color.

Chippewa makes a much more expensive Service Boot that goes a lot better with chinos. Right now Aldo is selling a rebranded version of the boot for $142 but they're selling out fast. It's the same boot except the insole says Aldo, there's no Chippewa stamp on the leather, and it has speedhooks like the J Crew version. However I find them not actually enough cushion for all wilderness trails; on real rocky ground, I dislike how much sharp things hurt. They're also not that durable, in the upper; they can rip, and they don't last. However, if you're actually someone who's gone REAL barefoot outdoors, and enjoy it, they'll probably work for you.

My favorite hiking barefoot shoe right now is the Merrell Trail Glove. It is certainly heavier by a few ounces, but it's still much lighter than basically any other shoe, comfortable as heck, and much more durable. It's 0mm drop, but with 4mm cushion. http://www.amazon.com/Merrell-Mens-Barefoot-Trail-Glove/dp/B005N4IUL4

Other than these, you can't go wrong with Red Wings Iron Ranger or Beckman. Comes down to personal preference.

You can also get the Chippewa Apache for pretty cheap if you use Amazon's 20% off clothing deal for a first time purchase (look around, you'll find it). I would consider stacking your jeans instead of rolling though, I find it suits the aesthetic much better.

I have wide feet too, and I've found that Bass Pasadena fit's pretty wide, even in the normal width...and it comes in wide too (I've also tried on the Brockton, and it was way too narrow). You can find Pasadena's on a bunch of sites, and I recently saw them on sale for $50 at a Bass outlet. That's a good place to try them on if you have one nearby.

u/soupnap · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Maybe. Will probably go for their Pasadena shoes if I can not find anything closer to my good old shoes. Thanks!

  1. Docs are combat/work boots and hence work well with certain types of fits and styles. Mainly 'edgier' ones like punk, skinhead, fits involving black skinny jeans, etc. Personally I think most docs look bad except for the classics: black or oxblood 1460s or 1490s. I've seen people pull off 1461s as a cheaper alternative to black postmans but again, it works best with a certain style. Docs, especially oxblood docs, can carry negative social connotations if you happen to be a bald white male. Brown docs look bizarre to me, especially the pebbled leather ones you've picked. I associate brown boots with a more country style, whereas docs are essentially combat boots so they look weird in brown.

  2. Made in China Docs use corrected grain leather, it's not super great, the vintage Made in England ones use a nicer full grain leather. As far as I know Docs cannot be resoled, but they should last you many years of hard wear regardless.

  3. They will be uncomfortable the first week or two you're breaking them in, but then are quite comfortable. I don't think they're a great beginner pair of shoes because they're a very very casual boot, and really only look good with a certain type of aesthetic. CDBs are much more versatile, but again it depends on your style.

For heavier winters (I'm from Illinois), would something like Chippewa Apache Lace-Up boots like these be a good choice?

u/homemade_mayo · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

Two weeks ago Katahdins went for $168. There might be another sale in a couple weeks if you are willing to wait. No guarantee it will be 20% off, though.

You like the Earthkeepers which are chukka boots and a lot different from the Boyd boots you love. The option for these would be Clark Desert Boots. I wouldn't pay regular price, and they can get down to the $80 range pretty regularly.

Options for NOW would be Thorogoods 1 or 2 from Amazon with the 20% off shoe email coupon or Chippewa's.

You can also get Iron Rangers on sale if you wait patiently. They'll never reach your budget though but they are quality. Toe box is a little big.

You can find more options if you search for boots on FMF. This topic comes up regularly so you might find more opinions. I suggested the more frequent ones, though.

clark's desert boots link since you don't know what they are: http://www.amazon.com/Clarks-Originals-Mens-Desert-Beeswax/dp/B000WU8SBG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377563207&sr=8-1&keywords=clarks+desert+boot+men

check out sebago docksides, on amazon they are arguably better than Sperry, and these can be had as low as about $35 if you sign up for the amazon shoe discount. http://www.amazon.com/Sebago-Mens-Docksides-Boat-Yellow/dp/B009NBRML2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1377563237&sr=8-3&keywords=sebago+docksides+men

what proof do you want?

No "source" is going to come out and say they're made by Chippewa. Obviously there is some kind of clause preventing JB from divulging them as a client, Aldo won't reveal their suppliers, or maybe there was an additional middleman in between.

Just think about it, what US based manufacturer would use horween leather, and make a product that is virtually identical to Chippewa's in every way? Just by deductive reasoning- it should be the most likely and reasonable conclusion that these are made by Chippewa/Justin Brands- no "source" should have to confirm that for you.

The best proof I have- aside from all the other comparative evidence- is the unique and distinct way Chippewa labels their sizing on the inside of the tongue- using some glue or something and then printing on top of it.

See this picture- my Aldo's on the right, this review's Chippewa's on the left

AFAIK no other manufacturer does this, the same labeling style is clearly found on the inside of the Aldo boots.

Also, the interior construction, and overall construction is basically identical based on that picture and many others.

To be clear, these are NOT the regular old chippewa boot you may be thinking of .

They are this model or the "renegade" on their website

Either there is some unknown US manufacturer that went to extreme lengths to copy those Chippewa's, or, as seen in many cases already- Chippewa/JB made a product for another company....

If that doesn't convince you, I don't think anything will.

u/fast_and_slow · 6 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I'm looking for something versatile... Something that looks nice, but keeping the tough look about them. I'm mostly looking to pair with raw denim and button downs, or v-necks.

Here are the few I've narrowed the search down to:

To Boot Kilburn in Koala

Redwing 6" Moc - Copper Rough

Redwing Iron Rangers - Hawthorne

Clark Desert Boot in Beeswax

Any help to sway my decision?

I'm being overloaded a bit when looking for boots. That's the last step for me as far as building my basic wardrobe and I just can't decide. I assume buying [these](https://www.amazon.com/Clarks-Originals-Mens-Desert-Beeswax/dp/B000WU6TN0/ref=sr_1_14?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1538090363&sr=1- 14&nodeID=679307011&psd=1&keywords=chukka+boots+mens) are a basic must. Should I also buy another pair of brown boots? Perhaps something like these ?

u/lilychaud · 4 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Steel toe casual shoes never look good. The toe box is too big and you just end up looking foolish. Get a pair of nice boots. Since you're in a factory, you probably dont need an insole shank like construction boots.

I was debating between the Lugged Chippewa or the Red Wing Lugged Moc Toe, but I'm open to other suggestions. Trying to keep the price below $175 (I found the Red Wings on sale for $150). Any thoughts?

u/persquare · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Go for Clark Deserts in Beeswax; they'll be much better than those Hush Puppies for only $20 more.

The Eastland mocs are really summer/late spring shoes. As such they're generally worn sockless.

Really this depends on where you live. From your choices I am guessing somewhere warm. If so just get the Clarks. If you deal with snow/bad weather, look at Iron Rangers or many of the other 8" boots listed in the fall season guide on the bar on the right.

u/immersz · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

I was looking at Clarks Bushacres on Amazon, and the beeswax leather does not look like it does on CDBs (Here are the Bushacres, and here are CDBs).

Soles are hard plastic or even wood so they don't compress when you're holding heavy weight. They also have a lot of support so the shoe basically locks your foot in. Most of them are originally designed for Olympic weightlifting.

Some examples:
