So far I love it!

Very fast, I find the acceleration curve to be really smoothe as well. Breaks aren’t amazing, but just means you have to be a better rider 😎

Wheels are 90mm pretty generic

-The wheels are pretty smoothe so far, very grippy

-I did order a 2nd set of wheel pulleys and modified them to fit like in this video by marsrover001

-I order a pair of cal7 “thin core” 97mm wheels to try as well

I don’t have a meepo or wowgo. but I do have a frankenboard made of a salvaged swagboard voyager. Hub motors, top speed 21.5.

I’d say right now I’m 2nd gear I’m sitting at about 24mph comfortably and i don’t need to go faster, but def. will 😈

Deck: Any of the big brands, kinda personal preference based on pop / board shape / graphics [Baker, Element (not featherlights, they tend to snap.), Flip, Zero, MiniLogo, etc.] You can also usually get a blank deck from one of those companies for a cheaper price.

Trucks: Independent trucks are what I've always used. Thunder trucks are good quality too. Indys are just kinda classic and very popular. Dad used em back in the 80s. (of the appropriate size, usually 139s, depends on deck width)

Wheels: Totally personal opinion, but I like Bones 100s or Spitfire Formula 4s

Bearings: Bones Reds. Classic. My dad skated on these too. I have skated on them ever since I started at 8 years old. Tried, true, affordable.

Here's my most recently purchased full, complete deck, parted out, for you to look at:

Deck: (not the exact same as mine, got it at a local shop. Deathwish decks are manufactured by Baker.) http://www.amazon.com/Deathwish-Deathspray-Black-Skateboard-Decks/dp/B0086Q7B2A/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1453949834&sr=1-5&keywords=deathwish+skateboard

Good Luck! If you want to get into skateboarding, I highly recommend going into a local shop. A big part of skate culture is supporting your local stores, which are usually filled with some pretty cool people.

  1. This AC:NL Guide, Legend of Zelda: OoT, Harvest Moon, and these wheels for my husband, add up to $102.

  2. My husband is the love of my life. He's my best friend and my enemy. He has a horrible and demented sense of humor like me which is awesome cause it would suck if he didnt get any of my gross jokes. I honestly think he's my soul mate. We've been through drug addictions, sickness, 4 kids and pretty much anything else you can think, but we're still going strong. We've been married for almost 4 years, together for 6 and we still love each other just like the beginning. I <3 him even though he's a punk.

3)I am NOT an artist. I am so sorry for this. I really tried.......

  3. 128

  4. I've had a really good day today! :D

    Thanks for the contest!

I'm about to buy a Bustin Shrike. It's an inch shorter then your max. It looks absolutely sick. You can never go wrong with Bustin.

However, since I have never actually rode the board, I can't really tell you how it feels, or how light it is.

But along with the deck, try some Paris 180s. They're good quality and pretty well priced. The 43 degree baseplate is obviously going to be a bit more stable at higher speeds, but the 50 degree baseplate will be super carvy and awesome freeride. I use them and they're pretty noice.

And For wheels, I personally like the Butterballs, just cuz theyre amazing. But just about any wheel with a round edge, and a hard duro will be good.

However, if you are going to be doing higher speeds, I would invest in some soft wheels with squared edges. They'll have a lot more grip, and are still possible to slide (but a little more difficult than hard/rounds)

I’m trying to get into long boarding and upgrade a board I got years ago but was wondering if this setup would work.

Would these trucks (9” axle ones) work with both these wheels (unsure about these i’m trying to keep the cost down without sacrificing quality too much and i’ve read good things about these) and this board ?

i’ve posted here before and some great suggestions and info but I tend to over research everything and this is no exception. If anyone has any better suggestions for trucks and wheels that would work for that board and not break the bank that’d be great!

Thanks in advance for any help!

u/Theopholus · 2 pointsr/NewSkaters

You can get hybrid wheels that handle cruising pretty well, but also will be hard enough to do tricks on. Softer wheels will make bumpy crappy roads a bit easier and less jarring. You may want to go with a little wider of a board for cruising, 8.25" or even 8.5".

If possible, I would check to see if there are any local skate shops in your town. They'll know what's popular for your area's streets, and they'll be able to give you the best advice.

If I had to order something online, it would be to pick a board size, get some indy trucks that fit that board, and then go with some Cruiser wheels. I wouldn't go over 54mm. You can still do many tricks on cruiser wheels, and they'll almost all be beginner tricks. If you find yourself struggling with some, get some harder wheels down the road and swap wheels when you need to. Don't forget bearings and griptape and of course, a super sweet deck.

And make sure you tighten your trucks for more stability and get comfortable with it. Looser trucks are often better the more advanced you get, but do skate tighter trucks to start.

u/Eloykwik · 1 pointr/NewSkaters

I've been skating for a while and more or less have only been skating transition for the past 6 years-ish. Mainly I started just where you are with some rather large (I would call) street wheels. For transition I found that the lager wheels tend to help build some speed and the softer they are the better they grip on concrete. So currently I've been riding these which are 60mm 85a wheels. I know 60mm is REALLY big jump but I've found they help launch my fatass better than 58mm. These wheels are ninja like on just about every riding surface.

As a last FYI if you decide to go anywhere in the 56-60mm range of sizes I would recommend riser pads, and for the 60mm+ wheels you may need to be looking in the longboard section, I have some 0.25" risers with my powells and they work pretty great, minimal wheel bite.

Last last thing: If you move to flat edge wheels stray from febels, smiths, Willie grinds, really anything that will put stress on the inside of the wheel. (I've ripped the wheel off the core of some 60mm 85a OJ's)

u/neurospex · 2 pointsr/NewSkaters

Okay, here is a post where I explained what to look for and why: https://www.reddit.com/r/NewSkaters/comments/51rmtk/setup_check_again_im_sorry_just_want_to_make_sure/d7eah52?st=isujm8ct&sh=8bb27ef2

I hope that helps! I also didn't like the blue, but it was the best I could find on that site. I can poke around on Amazon as well and will get back to you if I see anything. The most popular wheel on this subreddit right now are the 92a 55mm Ricta Clouds, but they seem to be very expensive in Europe.

These are my favorite wheels in 56mm: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spitfire-Formula-Classic-Skateboard-Wheels/dp/B00J7T0SSY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473351119&sr=8-1&keywords=spitfire%2Bformula%2Bfour&psc=1

The 56mm makes up a bit for the hardness, but they are slightly harsh for some of the newer skaters.

They do make some slightly softer ones: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spitfire-Formula-Wheels-Classic-Skateboard/dp/B00J7T0N16/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1473351119&sr=8-2&keywords=spitfire%2Bformula%2Bfour&psc=1

This is the best I could find for Ricta Clouds from the sites you mentioned: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ricta-Clouds-Skateboard-Wheels-White/dp/B01J9RQ0LC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1473351053&sr=8-3&keywords=ricta+clouds+54mm

I know this has been said already but $400-$500 is the lowest I’ve seen for a e-board build that works

DIY E-board parts

Recommend their parts: specifically the motor, gear kit and vesc

You can get trucks to work with single belt motor on amazon

Caliber 2

They’re smaller than what is recommended but worked on my build (plus they’re great quality)

These wheels are pretty good and have okay bearings

wheels + bearings

Everything else including remote is up to you I personally bought the one from Diy so that I knew everything would work together when assembled (no hassle) plus great customer service

Edit:

Link to my old build if curious

If you follow this build I recommend a deck with less concavity

u/towels_equal_happy · 1 pointr/ElectricSkateboarding

What color of the caliber v2 trucks do y'all think would go well with the 77a blue Caguamas? I'm gonna be putting it on a deck that is just wood colored on the bottom. I'll change the griptape in the future, but for now it's just black. I like the lavender, sea foam, and coral colors, but part of me wants to play it safe and just go with the Smoke color or the white/gold. There will be bones reds in the blue/green caguamas too, but they won't be too noticeable. I like the bright colors. Thanks for the help.

u/codyweby · 3 pointsr/ElectricSkateboarding

What I did right

  • Bought high-quality parts (mostly)
  • Laser-cut center logo
    • I originally tried cutting this out of grip tape. The results were... suboptimal. The laser-cut plastic looks amazing and was only ~$10 after free credits. I ordered it through Ponoko. New accounts get a $20 credit towards making stuff, and they have a huge range of materials to choose from. I used this material, which comes with adhesive pre-applied as well as being quite flexible.
  • Custom fiberglass enclosure
    • This was probably the part of the build that took the longest. Due to me not sizing the enclosure correctly (see below), I decided it would be easier to make an enclosure rather than scouring the internet for one that fit. This was my first time working with fiberglass, so it turned out a little rough. But it does the job and conforms to my deck way better than any pre-bought enclosure ever would. It’s currently secured to my deck with screws threaded directly into the wood. The holes are strengthen with superglue. So far this has worked well (5+ screw in/outs), we’ll see if it holds up. If the holes start stripping I’ll just put some threaded inserts in.
  • Installed a Bluetooth module
    • Although I haven’t gotten wireless configuration working yet, it’s really nice being able to see stats on your phone. I’m on iOS and use the Xmatic app which is very-well designed. It even comes with a companion Apple Watch app so you can easily check your speed and battery life while riding.

      Mistakes I made

  1. I didn’t add extra clearance to the battery size when shopping for an enclosure. I originally bought this enclosure from MBoards. But either the enclosure or the battery was slightly bigger/smaller than the advertised dimensions and the entire enclosure bowed out when I tried shoving the battery in. Cables never had a chance of fitting. This turned out to be a bit of a moot point anyways, because...
  2. I choose a deck with too much flex/bow. Even if the enclosure did fit the battery, attaching it to the underside of my deck would have severely warped it.
  3. I destroyed two $10 42V chargers. The first was destroyed by plugging it in backwards to the battery (i.e. red -> black and black -> red on the battery connector). We don’t talk about the second one. ^(Ok maybe I plugged it in the exact same way expecting something else yes I’m an idiot)
  4. I didn’t cut the grip tape very cleanly. Lots of rough edges, grip tape is harder to apply properly than it looks.
  5. My paint job on the enclosure turned out a little sloppy because I didn’t properly secure the stencil.

    Potential upgrades

  • New paint job on bottom (I might just go all-black and remove the design)
  • New grip tape (with more consistent edges)
  • Reverse-mounted motor (so I can use my dropdown like it was intended)
  • Sleeker fiberglass enclosure
  • Handle (I have no idea how to do this, any suggestions are welcome)

    Parts

  • Motor Mount
  • Pulley System
  • 3250W 180KV Motor
    • This thing has an insane amount of torque, it chews up hills without slowing down at all. Very happy with this motor.
  • Remote
  • Caliber II Trucks
  • Power Switch
  • Longboard Deck
    • It’s cheap. Didn’t expect much, but it’s actually fairly nice (at least for a traditional longboard; as noted elsewhere there’s a bit too much flex for it to be a good electric board).
  • Orangatang Kegel Wheels
  • VESC
  • BLE Module
  • Charger
  • 10S3P Battery Pack
    • This battery with its integrated BMS was plugged in to charge with its polarity accidentally reversed twice (see above), and it still works great.

I spent a total of ~$770 on this board (including wasted parts). It's more than I wanted to spend but I expect it'll last a long time.

      Specs:

  • Top speed: 28 MPH (in theory, I've only actually gone up to 16 MPH because of safety concerns :P)
  • Range: 25-30 miles (extrapolated from the voltage drop on a ~2 mile ride, haven't had time to go on a ride that fully drains the battery)

I'm having a bit of trouble deciding what I want to rock on my next board. I've only ever ridden a downhill setup with 42 degree trucks because that's what I had as a brand new rider who was clueless when buying. So I don't know if I want to get a freeride board next or a better downhill one. Basically I'm trying to decide between some Calibers with a 44 degree angles or with a 50 degree and round or square lipped wheels. The hills that I ride around here will get me up to about 30-35 at most. I like the idea of easy slides with a round lip but I'm a bit worried that they'll come off too easily when I want to just go around corners without sliding. I've also only ever ridden some pretty crappy downhill wheels so I don't really know how it feels to slide on a good pair of square lipped wheels.

I'd love to just hear from people who've ridden both types of setups and see what you guys think. I've also considered maybe 44 degree trucks with a round lip so the board holds better at higher speeds but can also slide. Again the only thing I'm worried about is how easy the wheels will come out from under me. These for instance. https://www.amazon.com/Free-Wheel-Co-Thoughts-Longboard/dp/B0115S19M8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473057237&sr=8-1&keywords=thought+70mm+wheels I like the idea that they're easy to break into a slide with and people say they don't wear a ton but it scares me a bit that they're so hard and slippery.

I'm new and need help putting to get a board.

Copy paste of my post that got removed:
So a couple days ago I rode longboards with friends around the city and realized that skateboards are actually really fun and are a great form of transportation. I recently have been looking into parts for a board but I'm on a budget ($150ish usd). I've picked out a rough list of parts but i have no idea if they are necessarily "good", right for my intentions, or if I'm buying more/less than need, etc. Again, I honestly have no idea what I'm doing. The kind of board I'm looking for is affordable with decent quality. I intend to use the board to ride around town (my town is really flat) for transportation or just ride for fun. I also prefer to have controlled/somewhat sharp turning ability. (It'd also be nice to have one that looks nice, though not completely necessary). I say again, new to this, don't know anything. noflame

Let me get back to you on the core differences. I printed Abec adapters and they seem to fit mine but I haven’t actually had a chance to ride yet. I’ve never heard of “mbx” cores and my wheels were specifically advertised as using Abec cores, which look just like the ones you linked.

These are the ones I got on amazon. They are available in several colors.

Maybe there’s a slight fitment issue I’ll feel once I ride them. Out of town for a few days without board though.

Belts may or may not be needed depending on your pulley selection. If you choose the larger pulley to keep the original torque and top speed, you need different belts. If you keep the original pulley size for lower torque and higher top speed you can keep the original belts. In general, when choosing a pulley they’ll tell you if you need new belts as long as you read the description closely.

Covers seem to be more dependent on the placement of the urethane around the core and seems to be more of an issue for the Kegel-core designs because the urethane may not be offset enough to stay out of contact with the inside face of the wheel. It never hurts to try the original covers and modify them if needed, but sometimes the pulley you choose will also say in the description if they require different covers.

I'm doing some research to buy my first board. I heard that the first thing to do is choose what I want to do with it. My idea is to use it for commuting, but my commutes are really long, so I started to look into Long Distance Pushing, since that is what most resembled it ( it's about 18 miles each way, so let's say 36 a day ) . I don't really know if I'll be able to skate that much, what I want is to push and feel like I'm actually going forward. I want to push and go fast without pushing 1000 times. I have a skateboard in my house but I can't use it because when I push I feel like the wheels are stuck or something like that. That skate is like 10 years old, so I thought it was because the bearings were dirty or something like that. I changed them. Nothing. Then a couple of weeks later I tried a longboard at Walmart. I could only push once and for less than 30 ft ( you know, space was a bit limited ) but I felt it easier. You know, like I could push once and go for much longer
Even though I'm going to use it for commuting, it's mostly for a trip I'm going to do, so it can't be THAT expensive. Before this, I was going to buy a Penny longboard because it's cheap ( 100 USD ) but I mostly read bad things about it from this sub and then again, the most important part is to push and feel. it. go. ( going fast without pushing 1000 times ) , so I thought maybe that wasn't a good idea
So... this is what I came up with. Tell me what you think and if I'm in the right path. Also, please tell me if I understood something wrong. If it helps, I'm 5 ft 5, 140 lb, and my legs are quite strong. I'm going for around 200 USD for my first time ( already double what I was going to spend on the Penny on the first time) :

  • Wheels: The smaller the wheels, the more they accelerate, and the bigger, the more speed they can catch. I don't know what I want here. I chose speed because the idea is to push the less possible so acceleration is less important. Correct?
Then, the harder they are, the more they slide, so I want the hardest wheels possible, right?
    I chose the orange Orangatang Kegels ( 80mm, 80a, 60 USD )

  • Bearings: I guess for what I'm looking I need the less friction possible. They have ABEC ratings although the two bearings I've looked up don't... The Loaded Jehu V2 (23 USD) and I've read this Bones Bearings(with spacers and washers, 16 USD) are superior in performance?

  • Trucks: The hanger width should match the width of the deck. I don't have a deck yet, so I don't know :/
The higher baseplate angle, the easier it is to turn. I chose 50-degree trucks, the Caliber II Fifty ( they come in 9 and 10 inches, 40 USD)

  • Deck: the closer I am to the ground, the easier it will be to push, so it has to be a drop deck. Now, every photo of LDPushing I saw, it was a double drop deck, but I read those are harder to turn, and if I happen to be on a hill, I don't want to go faster than around 20-22mph, so for that I have to carve, so if I can't turn... So I think a drop deck would be the best. Then, the heavier and longer the board is, the more it will maintain the momentum from a push longer, so I'm going for around 38 inches here maybe? That would be ideal, but I read that decks should be chosen by their width, not length, and since I chose those trucks, the deck should be roughly 9-10 inches wide. I'm lost here. Any recommendations? Remember that it has to be relatively cheap, but then again, at 20mph, I don't want to put my life in danger by a broken deck, so again, I'm lost. I've looked into this one (56 USD)

What do you think? This is about 210 USD including the helmet I chose, the Triple 8 brainsaver (36 USD)
    Am I missing something?
u/DroppingMonkeyBars · 7 pointsr/longboarding

Hi guys, I've been lurking the Longboard subreddit for a good amount of time. I used to have a skateboard back when I was a kid (Powell DK Essert on OG Trippins and Snakes) but I am looking for a longboard setup that is good for cruising / transportation / amateur downhill. Like getting from point A to point B faster than a skateboard with hardwheels.

Would this be a good first setup?

I'm running MBS 100mm wheels on mine and I love it. Those wheels are better suited to higher speed in uneven surfaces due to convex profile. Less effective in carving perfectly smooth surfaces than Kegel, but in speeds around 20mph MBS wheels feel great. The top speed is around 26mph with a hit on accel and brake distance. I got used to it.

i ride a penny skateboard around and they use 59mm 78a wheels. You could get bigger wheels if you wanted, but with so many people copying penny, wheels in this size are pretty easily obtained, and about $10 cheaper than typical longboard wheels ($25 as opposed to $35)

Be warned: I bought the conversion kit thinking it would work with these MBS all-terrain wheels... it does not.

https://www.amazon.com/MBS-All-Terrain-Longboard-Wheels/dp/B074G95LP5

Apparently it previously did, but MBS changed their core design. I was advised by SR that I can make the conversion kit pulleys fit by slightly filing down the pieces that fit into the wheel core) but I assume that might make it an insecure fit for their wheels such as the Foamies.

I'm a college student who weighs ~170 lbs (77 kg) and is currently trying to cruise around 10+ miles (16+ km) for transportation purposes on and off campus.

I ride on uneven sidewalks, bricks, and rough asphalt. I have a drop-through deck that can fit wheels up to 114 mm in diameter and 53 mm in width.

I dont know if I should ride with soft wheels (78a), hard wheels (82a), or somewhere in-between (80a).

I have a few wheels that have caught my eye:

  1. Kryptonics Classic 80a 80mm
  2. Orangatang Kegel 80a 80 mm
  3. River Rapid 110mm Matt McKeen Signature Wheel
  4. 97mm x 52mm 82a Wheels Longboard Flywheels

My question: Which wheels will be right for what I demand(short & long distance cruising)?

and what range on the durometer (for cruising purposes) should certain people have their wheels on?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M5BZSP7/ref=twister_B07CLLJ7X2 for the wheels and https://flatland3d.com/shop/all-products/boosted-boards/shock-pads/ for the pads.

Flatland also sells those awesome board protectors that alot of Mini owners run.

what about these? 53 mm so i won't need risers and the hardness is 90a? I hope the shipping costs won't be to much

Hopefully some stores in Australia can get some real flywheels in stock soon so I do not need to look for clones.

That's what I read- can I effectively power slide on these types of wheels?

(These are not my exact wheels- just similar to the type I have on my board)

I linked this recently. The last picture is with the all terrain tires. I recommend getting it on Amazon over eBay so you can grab the warranty. He also lists a different drive gear kit, I'll link the other one. You could also mount it on a different deck. The one big drawback is the single motor.

I'd check out the Sweet Spot Beluga has a nice big core, 80a and only $48. (They don't have a shop on their home site so they sell on amazon...)

i've been using powell peralta rat bones reissues (the 60mm 90A green ones) on my cruiser for about a year and i still really like 'em. you'll need risers to avoid wheelbite if they're going on a standard shaped deck with standard trucks.
