Always recommend the cera ve SA renewal cleanser. It’s amazing and events your skin and brightens it. I actually use the SA renewal body wash, you get a lot and I can use it on my face as well. The Cera Ve SA body lotion is also love, sometimes I use it on my face. Makes body super smooth, these two are dream team.

I think the dream routine:

Your skin sounds somewhat similar to mine, actually.

Aren't the eyelid patches the worst?! I kept getting eyebrow/eyelid psoriasis patches (which I thought were eczema until the derm indicated otherwise) and when I finally started using Vaseline more frequently they were kept at bay. Same goes for eczema--your barrier function is all messed up so the skin rapidly loses water which contributes to the flaking/scales.

Vaseline (if you're not opposed to it) really is the best barrier to help get the brunt of it down. After that I bet something like unrefined shea butter (which has some occlusive properties) would be fine to use as maintenance. I've also heard that hemp oil is really helpful for those with eczema--one of the compounds in there is anti-inflammatory.

  1. A cleanser alone generally doesn't suffice to remove all makeup. Honestly, using an oil (or a cleansing oil) first with a cotton pad helps the most. Then follow with whatever favorite cleanser you have on hand to wash off all the grime. Baby oil is dirt cheap and super effective. You can find unfragranced mineral oil off amazon as "snow river wood oil" or off iherb. If you're uninterested in mineral oil, test patch some EVOO on your face. This can be helpful in the meantime. I personally find it a bit too thick for makeup removal, but use it in a pinch. My personal runner up to baby oil is safflower oil--since it's fairly light in texture. Passion fruit, watermelod seed, hazelnut, meadowfoam (i love this, smells like grass or crisp green vegetables), argan, jojoba are also some good ones.

As for a cleanser, I wonder if a micellar water would work for you? /u/ptichandwood has a dupe of the Bioderma one that's under $15, but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me. VIchy I think has one too, and LRP might as well.

MUAC Green Tea/Pomegrante is an awesome gentle cleanser, it does contain sulfates but it's one of the only sudsing cleansers that doesn't make my skin feel like crepe paper. MUAC does samples, if you ever feel inclined to test it.

I recently got a sample of Missha flower bouquet cleansing oil, and I really liked it. I'm thinking about getting a full bottle actually. Non-drying. light pleasant fragrance, and it adequately removes the leftover oil/makeup residue on my face.Thos is what it looks like, the one of the left. Link is just to show you the product, I'm going to have to hunt it down for myself haha.

leaving now to go get dinner and break into my car because I left the keys in it, but I will be back in a couple hours to continue

    EDIT

OK, back, with my belly full of sushi.

  2. I've been loving this for my dry skin. It contains one paraben, at the dead bottom of the list. It's really only in trace amounts. This is one of the most hydrating sunscreens I've ever used. I wouldn't use it for a day at the beach, because it would use it up too fast, but this bottle has lasted me a LONG time for applying it every day.

EltaMD Clear is also well loved and well formulated. My boyf has the SPF45 one and he wears it everyday to work and applies it multiple times a day. It isn't super hydrating but it isn't super mattifying. It's exceptionally effective.

Banana Boat Looks like they have an interesting paraben-free physical sunscreen. Haven't used this before, so I can't comment on any white-cast issues. But SPF50 and 80min water resistant can't be that bad!!

  3. Expression lines do suck. Wearing sunscreen daily is a good first step as not to exacerbate anything further. Also, it'll be hard, but try not to be so expressive--I've been working on it myself and failing horribly, but figured I'd throw it out there. You could look into starting daily chemical exfoliation with an AHA (Alpha Hydrox oil free gel formula is 10% GA--don't know if they have parabens, but it's really helpful) and then work up to doing weekly lactic peels. Lactic has no actual peeling or downtime. I've found that after a couple years of peels/daily chemical exfoliation, and lots of moisturizing, that my forehead lines have softened up a bit. It's best to get your skin used to using a daily chemical exfoliator first, because if not, you can end up burning your skin accidentally. (Speaking partly from experience since I didn't use a daily AHA long enough before I got impatient and tried a low strength peel, ended up with an awesome painful hot spot that took a few days to get rid of).

/u/red_wine_and_orchids loves this from GoW. It's 10% GA at a pH of 3.2. I'm not sure how your eczema-prone skin would do with the peppermint hydrosol though, since peppermint can be irritating/drying for some. Red_wine says that you can't even tell it's in there. YMMV though. Another GoW one that looks interesting to me is this. But it;s not something to go start using off the bat since the pH is so low and it's 15% GA. You could also talk to your doc about a RX retinoid (like Adapalaene or tretinoin), but that's up to you if you want to go that route off the bat.

I'm a little older than you; I also have combination skin on the dry side. Here's my usual routine right now:

AM:

  • Wash face in shower with whatever bar soap I have on hand (usually an indie soap from a brand like Villainess or Arcana). This isn't really an ideal facial cleanser, but my skin is pretty compliant.
  • Wipe any areas with pimples or clogged pores (usually just my T-zone) with a Stridex pad (I use the wipes in the red box and cut them into quarters to make them last longer; don't usually need more than 1/4 wipe for my oily areas). The BHA helps cut the oils and unclog pores.
  • Wait a few mins, then pat a little water on my face to dampen it, and apply a few drops of Garden of Wisdom cranberry hyaluronic acid serum mixed with a few drops of maracuja oil or argan oil as a moisturizer. I used to just use the oil, but find that adding the serum helps keep my face hydrated and happy much longer. This particular HA serum smells really nice, which is the main reason I use it.
  • Sunscreen, either Elta MD UV Clear (what I use most days, but the PPD rating isn't as good as some, so if I'm going to be out in the sun for a while, I might use the Shiseido instead; I do always use this on my eye area since it doesn't sting) or Shiseido Hada Senka UV Gel (all chemical, so it stings my eyes, but has a higher PPD; I think it may also be better for flash photos). Both sunscreens rub in quickly without leaving a white cast or shininess/greasiness/stickiness on my skin.
  • Lip balm (currently using Nuxe Reve de Miel, which I bought after reading rave reviews but I think is really overhyped)

    PM:

  • Cleanse with Kose Softymo deep cleansing oil. My HG cleanser--takes off all makeup without any rubbing, and since it's oil-based, it gives the benefits of oil cleansing, but rinses off clean without needing a washcloth.
  • Stridex wipes as needed
  • I alternate actives at night somewhat randomly: currently rotating between Garden of Wisdom Vitamin C, E, and White Tea serum as a vitamin C product (I like this, but I'm going to try their simpler Majik C serum next to see if it's something that can be used during the daytime--this one advises use only at night), Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream as a retinol product, and Alpha Hydrox AHA Gel as an AHA for exfoliation. Retinol and AHA make your skin more sensitive to the sun and/or break down in sunlight, so I only use these at night. The vitamin C serum suggests only using at night, so I only use that at night as well.
  • I also spot treat hyperpigmentation at night with Garden of Wisdom Light 'n' Brite serum dabbed on just the areas that need it.
  • Lip balm
  • I rub rosehip seed oil on my eyes and lashes (combination lash conditioner, moisturizer, and gentle retinol product for my eye area, since I avoid using most active products around my eyes)
  • Then I moisturize my whole face with the maracuja or argan oil and sometimes the HA serum. I have a drugstore knockoff of Cerave in the tub that I occasionally use, but I feel more moisturized if I use oils. The rosehip seed oil feels a bit heavier than the others, so I usually only use it on my eye area.
  • Occasionally I use masks or spot treatments: Neutrogena salicylic acid gel or Clearasil BP cream for pimples, Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask if my pores are clogged (though it's drying, so usually just on my T-zone), Dr. Jeffrey Dover Skin Effects Glycolic Mask for extra exfoliation, or a honey/yogurt/turmeric mask; I also have a jar of C-Brighter maracuja eye cream that I got kind of by accident and use this sometimes on my eyes as well, but I wouldn't repurchase this because it seems overpriced/overhyped.
u/queenblackacid · 2 pointsr/Rosacea

I have erythematotelangiectatic rosacea with a papule or two every month. My cheeks are covered in permanent telangiectasias, but I don't mind them because I can cover it with makeup easily. I've had them since I was a kid. Occasionally I get a small papule or two

My nose has worsened over the last 5 years. I have no telangiectasias but my whole nose up to the bridge has diffuse erythema. Above the bridge of my nose has some redness too, leaving the bridge of my nose white... The redness goes away if I press on my nose (it blanches - not permanent). It is difficult to keep makeup on my nose throughout the day without it coming off. This is the most annoying thing about rosacea for me.

My forehead has patches of eczema either side that I've had success treating with elidel (pimecrolimus cream) and a better skincare routine. I have rosacea in the middle of my forehead. Easy to cover with makeup.

I've tried metrogel and finacea, both without effect. Finacea just hurts my skin. I'm taking 50mg doxycycline capsules and I thought they were working, but then I forgot for a while. It's difficult to tell. Rosacea is difficult to control, unfortunately.

___

I currently use the following of an evening:

  • Mineral oil massage to remove makeup - emulsify and remove in the shower with water.

  • Sulwhasoo Snowise Ex Cleansing Foam - low pH cleansing foam that leaves my skin lovely and clean without over-cleansing.

  • Actives - Elidel for eczema if required.

  • Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Toner - Not astrigent at all. Super slippery base makes the next steps more effective.

  • Holy Snails Shark Sauce and Snowbang Essence - Small amount, mix together in hand and wipe across face. Contains ceramides to help replenish lipid barrier, niacinamide and n-acetyl glucosamine for anti-inflammatory effects, lots more lovely stuff.

  • Mizon Snail Repair All In One cream - Small amount all over face. It's a very light cream, almost like a gel. It has a lovely texture.

  • Shara Shara Honey Bomb Ampoule - niacinamide, so good. Small amount, all over face.

  • La Roche Posay Lipikar Baume AP+ - One pump to cover whole face (400ml bottle has a pump). I love this stuff. Niacinamide (anti-inflammatory), glycerin (humectant), shea butter (emollient), mineral oil & silicone (occlusive emollients).

  • CosRX Ultimate Moisturising Honey Overnight Mask OR Mizon Snail Repair Recovery Gel - Moisturising gel to "set" the layers of moisturiser beneath. I'm still testing out the snail recovery gel, not sure if I like it because it doesn't "set" as well.

In the morning I gently wash the set slippery layers off with water and apply:

  • Actives - Elidel for eczema if required.

  • Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Toner

  • Holy Snails Shark Sauce & Snowbang Essence

  • Mizon Snail Repair All In One cream

  • Lipikar Baume AP+ on bad skin days, or CosRX Ultimate Honey Overnight Mask on good days.

  • Shiseido Hada Senka Mineral Water Gel SPF 50+ - I love the finish of this sunscreen. Sunscreen is super, super important, especially with the niacinamide use. Use a sunscreen every single day, even in winter, even if only inside. Every day!

I take a resveratrol capsule every day to combat sirtuin inhibition caused by niacinamide.

I've been following this routine for four months and my skin has improved a lot in terms of texture. The flaky patches went away and the eczema almost completely disappeared with occasional maintenance use of elidel and just generally looking after my skin. The rosacea erythema has stayed the same, but I have developed fewer papules. Hopefully, if I can remember to take the doxycycline, the redness of my nose may also improve.

My picks are a rotation of Japanese sunscreens, because when it comes to skincare I just can't stick to one thing!

Some in my rotation:

Disclosure: These are all Amazon non-affiliate links so people here can easily find prices and other reviews (even though I personally shop these on Ebay and Rakuten and not Amazon).

  • Biore Perfect Face Milk - Says it's water resistant, I personally like the finish and can use it under makeup with no issues.

  • Biore Perfect Milk - This is great for going out in my opinion, an actual going outside face sunscreen!

  • Hada Labo Creamy UV Gel - Very light and friendly, I reserve it for interior use.

  • Shiseido SENKA Mineral Water - I really like this one and on me this has a matte powdery finish. Some people complain it goes on greasy. I find that whole it's greasier than others during application, it dries out non-greasy. YMMV.

  • Forgot to add: I use Privacy's UV Face Powder for retouching. It's Zinc Oxide based. There are other sunscreen powders on the market. My mom uses Colorescience's and it can be found on Amazon too, and Peter Thomas Roth also has one. I just use this one because it's cheaper. It's very whitish though so not the best option for darker skintones.

Finally, the cult favorite is Biore Watery Essence so I'm linking it. I personally did not like how drying this was and its citrus smell, but the vast majority of people swear by it because it's really light and easy to use everyday in interiors.

Japanese sunscreens generally contain alcohol and all the ones I listed do contain alcohol, so if you're against alcohol in sunscreen you might not like the ones I list, however there are some well liked alcohol-free Japanese sunscreens that you can find searching online, /r/AsianBeauty can be a good resource for these.

The reason I personally like Japanese sunscreens in particular is their texture and their ingredients. Most of them contain Titanium Dioxide (a physical UV blocker) and/or Zinc Oxide (the broadest spectrum UVA blocker approved for sunscreen use at the moment). UVA are the rays you need to look out for when preventing sings of aging. This is what PA and the plus signs after it stand for in Japanese sun products, while the SPF we are all familiar with only refers to UVB protection. Four plus signs after PA denote the highest level of protection currently in place.

The downside of physical sunscreen it that it tends to leave a white cast behind so darker-skinned people might have issues with this aesthetically.

There might be western sunscreens that are physical but most mainstream brands (like Neutrogena) rely on their chemical patented formula (or a mix of physical and chemical like some of La Roche Posay), which is also good, but can be sensitizing to some people. They also do have a greasier formula that remains tacky at least in my experience, and some people really hate this about sunscreen.

I don't personally use Korean sunscreens at the moment because their regulations only allow PA+++ to be the highest, but many people enjoy their variety, so again you can look in the AsianBeauty subreddit or on youtube/blogs if you want to read reviews of those.

    **

If you for personal reasons would like to get a Western brand physical non-greasy sunscreen, Paula's Choice Resist Super-Light Daily Wrinkle Defense SPF 30 Tinted Matte Moisturizer contains Zinc Oxide protection and has a matte finish!

Her line is overall well liked by people because of their choice of ingredients due to a philosophy of extensive research. I have this sunscreen and while I found it too drying for my normalish-to-combo skin, it could be a godsend for oilier people. Ideal for daily use, and it has some tint. I haven't tried any other of her sunscreens but her line is worth looking into, if you're new to building a routine! Unfortunately I'm just noticing that since my introduction to this brand in 2014 the prices have raised, most likely due to her online following growing.

    Final note:
All of which I just wrote is stuff I learned from the Internet and also my personal experiences with the products I've tried and liked, I'm not a sun protection expert!*

Hey friends! I'm pretty much a sunscreen virgin and I could use some help.

I've read through the sidebar, done a ton of searching through old posts, and have opened probably 100 amazon tabs today, but I still feel lost. Here's some relevant information, if it helps:

  • 26 years old female, living in Oregon.
  • Don't go outdoors much.
  • Not really concerned with anti-aging stuff, much more concerned with preventing skin damage/cancer and whatnot.
  • Pretty normal skin, dry/flaky forehead and back/boob acne-prone
  • I don't THINK alcohol in products is a huge problem for me? The skin around my eyes gets fairly pissy fairly quickly, haha, but it seems unrelated from any skincare products I use.
  • Rarely wear makeup, not hugely concerned about whitecast but am nervous about looking greasy
  • Lastly and most pertinent to my current situation, I'd really like to find as big a bottle as I can for a reasonable price (10-15 USD if possible); I really like the idea of the popular Asian products but the bottles are sooo tiny, I can't afford to buy them every month. If I can get a bigass bottle of sunscreen, I have my own little travel bottle that I can put some in for commuting around town.

With all that in mind... is there something I can find? I've heard US sunscreens aren't great, and though it'd be fantastic if I could just go to a local grocery store and grab a bottle, I'm willing to order online if there just aren't any suitable US brands.

    Please help? :(

ETA these are the two most promising ones I've found so far:
Nivea Perfect Water Gel and Skin Aqua Super Moisture Gel

Still a little small (around 4 oz, I'd really like to find something AMERICAN-SIZED lol, like 10/12 oz or larger if possible) but better. Would one of these be okay? Are there better options?

I just finished 300 miles of the mountain to the sea trail in North Carolina.

I did it in just under a month.

I had an amazing time, and I would definitely do a long hike like that again. I think I will be more selective about the region I hike next time. I look forward forward to my next adventure!

I used injini toe sock liners underneath darn tough wool socks, and I believe this is why I didn’t have any blister/foot problems. Even after hiking with wet feet/socks/shoes for 4-6 days at a time. I highly recommend these to hikers and also to anyone doing long distance running.

I liked my backpack just fine. It’s balance when off my back was annoying. Like setting it down, it would always feel lopsided and lay on the ground in a frustrating way. But while wearing it, it was comfortable and seemed great. I grew quite fond of it.

For parts of the trail, a bear canister was required and this was a challenge with my pack and gear. Very ungraceful and will make me be more thoughtful in the future about trails I choose. I am happy not to have to deal with that canister every day now that I am done.

I used trekking poles the whole time and loved them.

I brought a kindle ereader with me and was happy to have something to wind down with in the evenings. I was able to read several books while on the trail!

My favorite pieces of gear:

accordion style seat pad

injini toe sock liners

sunscreen stick

Pack:
Osprey lumina 45

My sleep system:

Therm a rest neoair xlite torso pad

tekology inflatable pillow

I also used a synthetic quilt. I don’t have a link for it

My shelter:

single person tent

I used winter window cover treatment plastic for my footprint and was VERY IMPRESSED!! After a month, still done have any rips or noticeable wear.

Cooking system:

A lightweight cup for boiling water
Stove

A sawyer squeeze for water filtration paired with a couple smart water bottles

Great experience. Loved all my gear!

I would recommend the following:

Avoid skin-clogging makeup as much as possible (bronzer, concealer, primer, etc.). I don't use any of this - no BB creams, no CC creams, no foundation, nothing. Keep the skin unclogged, is the goal. Use something that has salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to wash your face, 1-2 times a day (morning and night) because that will actually kill the acne-causing bacteria. Then use non-comedogenic face moisturizer - I like Clinique's Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief and use either Etude House Sunprise Mild Airy Finish Sun Milk SPF50+ or Banana Boat Kids spf 50 (it's a physical sunscreen not got a lot of oily sunblock ingredients). You have to moisturize and gotta make sure you protect your skin from wrinkles and cancer!

After showering, I put Thayer's Witch Hazel (the rose petal kind but I don't think it matters which "flavor" you choose) on. Just a thin layer applied with a cotton ball. It's essentially another cleaner. Then I wait for it to dry and add the same Clinique moisturizer and then, to get rid of pigmentation, you will need a cream with retinol to stimulate growth of new and fresher skin cells. I recommend using it at night, before you apply the moisturizer so it will penetrate the skin. I use Alpha SkinCare Deep Wrinkle Repair from Ulta.

Be gentle with your skin - don't wash it too hard and pat it dry and use warm water, not too cold or hot. Once a week, make a gelatin pore cleaning mask (recipe here but there's a billion out there you can use) and use a clay mask as well to drain your pores of oil after you've yanked any gross globs out.

This is going to take time, of course. And make sure that your pillows you sleep on are clean (wash pillowcase once a week) and that you don't let your hair brush against your face (oils can get on your skin and clog it).

I've done this for 12 years and that's how I've kept my skin essentially completely blemish free (occasional pimples, small, once every few months?)

The goal is to keep skin clean and moisturize it just enough. It's not very complex, to be honest. I don't ever listen to anecdotal crap about why some products work better than others. I look at the ingredients list and then read studies to see why it might work. Sure, if you're just looking for moisturizing, fine, rely on anecdotal stuff and weak evidence, but for things where you really want to see results like less wrinkles or fewer pimples, ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and retinol are very important.

*ETA: when applying ANYTHING to your face, make sure you wash your hands first!!! No point to use these wonderful products if the tool applying them is dirty. And then it gets the product as well as your face dirty. Clean hands, clean towels to dry your hands and face! Wash the towels a minimum of once a week. Don't have to use a lot of soap to launder the towels - bc that can be irritating - but needs to be clean.

I bought this and I love it, so you can always have safe drinking water.

Sun screen is outrageously expensive. I literally just bought sunscreen yesterday 125ml for almost 400 baht.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HNSSV3U/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1496851895&sr=8-1&keywords=sunscreen+sticks

These are great and don't count against your liquids

Again; then your conditioner doesn't count against your liquids. The off spray (high deet) I bought yesterday was 125 baht. So super cheap. I also brought these and they've helped a lot.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01F85OLV0/ref=mp_s_a_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1496852045&sr=8-14&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=mosquito+repellent+bracelet

Good luck. Seriously don't really worry about clothes. They're so much cute and cheap stuff here that you'll want to buy. I'm on day 36 of a 6 month trip and I hardly packed a full weeks worth of clothes, I've bought elephant pants and some sun dresses and tanks. Bring clothes you're going to wear out and then just toss by the end of your trip. Also if you get your clothes laundered almost everything will shrink. So seriously. Bring crap clothes.

Also. Something I always do before a long trip which is super tough for me is, pack your bag like three or four days before you're going to leave. And then carry your bag around for like thirty minutes. Is it too heavy?!? Is there stuff that you might not need? Seriously the humidity is so awful you're going to want the lightest pack you can manage.

This bag is a god send. I used it as my carry on bag, for my essentials for the flight and then it folds up super small! So when I want to go out for the day and want to bring a few things I shove it all in that. Also. I love my money belt. I use it here all the time. I actually have the "spy belt" brand and so when I go out at night I have some cash and a place to stash my iPhone and I'm still hands free. I think it looks less desiring that a large shoulder purse that someone may want to take. 😊sorry if this is too much info. Holla if you have any other questions!! I might be able to help.

I second u/pleasekisumi's suggestion to add oil to your routine, but if you are afraid that an oil-based cream would feel too heavy for you to start, I suggest putting in a few drops of non- comedogenic facial oil to your current moisturizer. Great choices are rosehip oil, argan oil, sea buckthorn oil, and meadowfoam oil. I'm acne-prone and use all those oils to great effect. At night, it would be a good idea to seal in the moisture with a water-based sleeping pack (like Laneige water sleeping mask) so you do not lose all your moisture overnight.

For sunscreens, make sure you wait still your moisturizer dries down before applying it. The Japanese make great sunscreens and the array could be dizzying, but here are a few I recommend: this, this, [this](http://www.amazon.com/Biore-SARASARA-Perfect-Bright-SPF50/dp/B00SM99KWA/ref=sr_1_8_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1458088811&sr=1-8&keywords=biore+sunscreen], this, this.

I can't recommend anything more specific than that as there is so much trial and error involved. I personally like watery gels that try down matt, but I make sure to pump my skin with moisture beforehand even though I have oily skin.

Good luck!

u/Sultanofspiffy · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I'm also oily and live in the desert so I get easily dehydrated skin, so this is reflective of those issues as well.

AM:

Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Foaming Cleanser Be sure you buy the foaming formula! The other one they offer in the same packaging isn't alcohol free! i make sure to foam it up in my hands before applying it to lessen irritation. I use this (not a water rinse like many do) in the morning for a reason you'll see in my PM routine.

Argan Oil for moisturizer until I get Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel

Benefit Dream Screen Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 45

Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF 42 PA+++
This is a great find because a good heap of Asian BB creams that work well with oily skin or are mattefying have alcohols in them.

PM:

Same Cleanser

(If I'm removing makeup I use Thayer's Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner in order to make sure my face is totally clean. I wouldn't recommend this method to remove makeup if you're dry, this isn't necessarily drying, but OCM much more hydrating for those with dry skin.)

Stridex Maximum Strength (Red) pads This does have menthol in it, if you have dry skin, I wouldn't reccommend it personally, though some have no issues with it. I use this every other night.

I've got my St. Ives Exfoliating Pads coming in from Amazon this week and I can't wait to try them! I'll use them on the nights I don't use my Stridex pads. These are a Lactic Acid based AHA product.

I may eventually get neem oil as a spot treatment to use in this step but my skin's been pretty okay without it, though I bet it would help. I've also got hydrocolloid bandages coming in on my Amazon order, so I can't wait to try those!

And finally I dampen my face, apply Vaseline or Aquaphor
The difference in the 2 is negligible for me, both are occulsives so they do require some moisture already (the water) in order to keep things moist. Because it stays on most of my face, I need to use a cleanser in the AM to get it all off.

Hope this is enough (and actually relevant) for you! Good luck on the product search, it's a bitch sometimes!

(Also if you don't like/can't use chemical sunscreens, I'd recommend the 2 I use Alba Botanica fragrance free mineral broad spectrum spf 30 [Slight white cast that fades] for my face and Banana Boat Kids Tear-Free Sting-Free Lotion Sunscreens SPF 50 [Also has slight fading white cast] for my body.)

Here is the Skincare Addiction sunscreen guide post, although it's a bit confusing. I found this Skinacea page to be much more helpful and to make much more sense when I was looking into sunscreens. Also look at the related links at the top of the page for more descriptions about what you need in a sunscreen. You should have something that's at least SPF 30.

I have skin that's really difficult to please with sunscreen. Sunscreen either clogs my pores or burns my sensitive skin. My skin is also combination/oily and acne prone. There are chemical sunscreens, physical sunscreens, and ones that use both chemical and physical blockers. Here's a helpful side-by-side comparison. The combination ones are generally suggested as the best for skin protection, but sometimes people react badly to various ingredients and the most important thing is the sunscreen provides broad spectrum, photostable protection. It's mostly about trial and error until you find something you like.

As far as the ones I've personally tried...

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen in SPF 55 felt really good going on. It only got a little greasy around my nose, but otherwise was dry. It seems like a number of people here like it for a drugstore sunscreen, but I broke out after a few days of using it.

I like MaryKay's SPF 30. It goes on dry and has a bit of a fragrant scent, so it doesn't smell like sunscreen. I've used this at the beach for many summers, though I'm going to try out some other sunscreens because I'm worried that it'll clog my pores if I use it daily. I think I may need an only physical sunscreen.

A lot of people here like the Elta MD sunscreens, which are a little pricier. People tend to recommend the UV Clear SPF 46 on this subreddit. I just ordered their UV Physical SPF 41, though I haven't tried it yet. It's important to note that the physical one is tinted, so it probably works best on more fair skin.

I'm no expert on sunscreens, but this is the info that I've researched and that's been provided by the subreddit. Thank goodness for /r/SkincareAddiction, amirite?

u/DarklyNought · 6 pointsr/lupus

The Environmental Working Group has a comprehensive list of the best sunscreens and the ones you should avoid: EWG Best Sunscreens . Take a look!

I like the brands Kiss My Face and Neutrogena, personally.

And make sure not to rely on sunscreen alone! Sunscreen has to be reapplied in good quantity on a regular basis. It’s good to wear long sleeves and a hat, as well, preferably in fabrics with UPF.
Examples of UPF clothing lines are Coolibar and Mott 50. . Places like Dicks Sporting Goods also carry sun protective clothing.
You can also use something like Rit Sun Guard to treat your clothes and give yourself extra sun protection for up to 20 washes.

You might also consider investing in a sun blanket or an umbrella with UPF as well.

Stay in the shade and avoid direct sunlight. Photosensitive lupus patients are supposed to avoid going outside in the sun between 10 AM and 3 PM, as that is when the sun is strongest.

Stay safe and have fun!

Empties: None yet! Just about at the end of a Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch sunscreen but otherwise I'm just beginning this having a skincare routine dealy.

Purchases:

St. Ives Exfoliating Pads: Pleasant, but don't seem to do much on my skin at about 4-5% lactic acid. So I switched from using these at night to using them in the morning and now my nighttime AHA is:

Olay Regenerist Night Resurfacing Elixir. I incorporated this beginning every other night, with no other AHA, and had no issues so now it's nightly. Haven't noticed anything yet, but it's only been about a week. This is about 8% glycolic acid I think. I'm really considering trying /u/SaraSays' DIY vitamin C serum and tretinoin once I'm through with the St. Ives and Olay, as so far my skin is tolerating the AHAs super well.

Ceraveinthetub: I've mentioned before that it leaves my skin a little tacky. I found that a light touch is essential with this moisturizer. When I put it on very lightly it's a much smoother feel. I learned not to be fooled by its quick absorption which made me want to slather on more, which is a bad idea! It's an excellent body lotion too. Not sure if I'll get it again or not.

Jojoba oil: The oil cleansing method fascinated me, especially once I tried it on makeup using just some olive oil. I didn't particularly like the olive oil itself but it cleaned like a champ. So I ordered this jojoba off Ebay, choosing it because of the whole like your own sebum property. I like it, and use it to moisturize at night sometimes too. Like the Cerave, I'm stuck with this forever — 12 oz. is a TON.

Castor oil: Since castor oil is supposed to help with the cleaning aspect, I picked some up the other day. I haven't really noticed it affecting the cleansing, but then again I don't wear makeup often.

u/tacoboutluv · 2 pointsr/AsianBeauty

I'm looking for a sunscreen that doesn't contribute to my oily skin but also doesn't dry me out (do sunscreens that meet both criteria exist??) I have narrowed it down to two options after reading through a lot of reviews/threads on this. Has anyone tried either or both and can help me make a decision? I am debating between:

Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Milk SPF50

and

Nivea Perfect Water Gel SPF 35 P+++ (I wanted to find the Sun Super Water Gel SPF 50 but this is the only one available)

Skin type: quite oily and dehydrated (sometimes flaky around the eyes)

Country: Canada - currently cold harsh winters

Top skin concern: finding sunscreen that is not greasy but also not drying

Current routine: Neutrogena Hydroboost Gel Cream as day moisturizer; great for oil control but not moisturizing enough. I don't wear foundation/face makeup either so no whitecast would be ideal.

Thank you!

I'm in the market for a new sunscreen. I've recently come to the discovery that chemical sunscreens aren't supposed to burn and sting my face, so I'd like a physical sunscreen for my sensitive skin. I used Neutrogena Dry Touch before, and now their Sensitive Skin sunscreen, but even on my paper-white face I can see a white cast.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a sunscreen that absorbs quickly, dries to a satin or matte finish, and is purely physical and/or caters specifically to people with sensitive skin and possibly rosacea? I know this narrows the field significantly, but I'm open to any sunscreen recs SCA has (Asian, EU, etc).

So far, the sunscreens I've been able to compile that SCA loves that seem to fit my needs but I'm still not entirely sure are good for me are:

  1. Missha All Around Safe Block Soft Finish Sun Milk Spf50 Pa+++ 70ml Sunscreen
  2. Biore sarasara UV Perfect Face Milk Sunscreen 30ml. SPF50 + PA++++ for Face
  3. Biore SARASARA UV Bright Face Milk BIHADA Sunscreen 30ml SPF50+ PA++++ for Face
  4. Shiseido Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++ 60ml
  5. Shiseido SENKA | Sunscreen | Mineral Water UV Gel SPF50 PA+++ 40ml
  6. Paula's Choice HYDRALIGHT SHINE-FREE MINERAL COMPLEX SPF 30

    Thanks in advance!

Not sure what your skin is like, but I have oily skin and the Shiseido SENKA Mineral Water UV Gel SPF50 PA+++ is the best (and only at $9.49)! It is a light sunscreen, perfect for those with oily skin or even just for the summer. The finish is matte and feels a little powdery but it won't affect the texture of your skin.

Might want to play around with a reduced frequency for the Stridex, or at least check out recognizing and treating overexfoliation :)

I have a list of sunscreens that had no reported white cast for deeper skin tones (~NC/NW 40+), but my brain is sludge at the moment so you'll have to double check the $/oz:

| Guide | |
--- | ---
A | contains short-chain alcohol (drying)
EO | contains essential oils
F | contains (synthetic) fragrance
NW | no reported white cast, ymmv!

I use sheisedo SENKA mineral water sunscreen

Moisturizer i use Avene products but they are pretty pricey. You can look into pure oils - i love love love sunflower seed oil - absorbs quickly and, to me, is extremely luxeroius and moisturizing.

The sheisedo also is an extremely matte-fying sunscreen which is a bonus.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

BB cream is good but you're gonna get better sun protection from a separate sunscreen. I lurve Shiseido sunscreens. The Hada Senka UV Gel is my favorite but it's hard to get in the US. Notice that listing has an almost 100% shipping charge. Argh...so it = $0.3 per mL.

The EltaMD Clear is awesome too but about $0.42 per mL

This Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection is what I am using now. It has a good deal of physical blockers too and it only costs $0.23 / mL. So it's the best value.

The playa poses a few challenges to taking care of your skin:

1 - Maintaining the pH balance of your acid mantle

Believe it or not, the skin on your face is slightly acidic (pH of about 5.5). This helps protect your skin from acne-causing bacteria. However, playa dust is alkali and can throw your pH off kilter. You know that "squeaky clean" feeling you get after washing with some soaps? Unfortunately that's your acid mantle being washed away by alkali detergents which leaves your skin more sensitive to all sorts of nasty stuff (bacteria, fungus, pollutants, etc). Thus all the stuff you hear about using a "gentle cleanser" for washing your face. This actually means a pH neutral cleanser.

2 - Keeping your skin from getting too dry

Another aspect of protecting your acid mantle is to make sure it isn't too dry (meaning too little oil or water). The structure of your skin's acid mantle contains fatty lipids which help form this protective barrier. Dry it out and your skin is again vulnerable. For those who say their skin clears up on the playa, I'm guessing these folks may have oily skin so the dry atmosphere may help them balance shit out. Since you are already on a topical solution, I think you'd be especially sensitive to dry skin issues.

3 - Protecting your skin from the sun

Sun damage is real, m'kay? The sun's rays slow down the production of new skins cells. Age also slows down this process. You know how little kids rarely get scars? That's because their skin "heals faster" vs. adults, meaning their skin cells regenerate faster. If you are trying to heal acne or some sort of scratch, use sunscreen! You'll be amazed how much faster your skin starts to look better.

So, what should you do on the playa? I recommend cleaning your face using a cotton pad and a mild organic toner twice a day. The toner removes the playa dust, adds some skin-loving vitamins, and helps the skin from getting dried out. You also need to use sunscreen (ideally a physical formula) so it stays on a good chunk of the day.

TL:DR -- clean your face with a cotton pad and a mild toner 2X a day and use sunscreen.

I FEEL you. I own so many sunscreens. However, I can say I have finally stopped looking with two favorites: Shiseido Hada Senka Mineral Gel and my FAVORITE favorite, Paula's Choice RESIST Super-Light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30. They're both very cosmetically elegant sunscreens, and the Paula's Choice one is full of great ingredients. They're both really lovely, and I feel like I can finally stop looking. I use something different on my body though - whatever smells best from the drug store!

Hello r/AsianBeauty ! Long time lurker looking to implement more AB products into my routine. I am 22F with combination oily skin with dry spots on my cheekbones. I developed a routine half a year ago with the help from r/SkincareAddiction sidebar information. The skincare products I use at the moment seem to work for me short-term; my face feels soft and refreshed after use, but after I wake up or get home from work the oil appears to have accumulated.

I am mostly looking for foam cleanser recommendations. My current cleanser (Cleansing Story) was purchased from Marshall's and I do not live near stores that carry many AB products. I am also trying to transition from the Neutrogena to an AB cleanser.

I would greatly appreciate any pointers, tips, or recommendations. The AB routine seems really intimidating and I would like to start with 1 or 2 products. There is also a huge list of websites to order from and I am overwhelmed by the unfamiliar sites, products, and effectiveness. Which product(s) would be a good starting point for beginners? I have only ever used TonyMoly, Cleansing Story, and Face Shop (face masks) but am more than willing to try different brands. I am also on a budget, so products less than $25 are ideal. Thank you in advance!

Of course! Here's the info she gave me:
"To help manage excess oil:

  1. Use a cleanser designed for oily skin. Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser, Cerave foaming cleanser, and Vanicream Free and Clear Liquid Cleanser are good cleansers.
Cleansers with benzoyl peroxide (Panoxyl 4% Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Creamy Wash http://amzn.to/1mPHbrD) may be especially helpful, as they contain ingredients that treat breakout as well.
  2. Use an oil-free sunscreen. EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 http://amzn.to/1mGsHz is a good option. If you want a mattifier, try Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 http://amzn.com/B001LNTNGC . A great physical sunscreen with a light tint is Tizo Solar Protection Formula, Facial Mineral Fusion SPF 40: http://amzn.to/WiFTQt.
  3. Try an oil-absorbing face sheet. You can get matte facial blotting papers from Clean & Clear, Boscia, NYX, and others.
  4. Even oily skin sometimes needs a moisturizer. If so, some good options include EltaMD AM, Sebamed Clear Face Gel (as you know!), or Cerave Moisturizing Cream.
Physical methods like cleansing brushes and exfoliators can also remove oil, but they may irritate the skin, so should not be used too aggressively. Also they don’t remove the oil for any longer than more gentle methods.
Using an oil (but not coconut oil, please!) to cleanse the skin can help dissolve the oils in the pores, so that the sebum is more easily removed and the pores may then appear smaller."
u/whiskeyonsunday · 1 pointr/RandomActsofMakeup

My only summer tip is to keep up with your pedicures! I know it seems kind of obvious, but I always just feel more confidant in my sandals if I have a fresh coat of paint on my toes (even if it's just clear polish) and everything is trim and neat. Perfect way to feel fresh and cool in a Heat Wave!

Oh, and one more! If your foundation has SPF 15... that is not enough. SPF 15 is going to do nothing for you, especially if you're fair. And make sure whatever you use protects against UVA and UVB radiation! I've been using Neutrogena's Ultra Dry Touch sunscreen. I go for SPF 55 because I'm pale as hell, but I think it comes in other SPFs.

u/chemkara · 3 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

You are doing great with your “basic” routine. For Retinol you can add The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane in the days you don’t use the Cerave SA. Once or twice a week to build up tolerance.

For sunscreen, I work with kids and we can be in the sun for hours. These are my favorites and work for adults too.

I have very oily and pretty acne prone skin, and so far (two weeks of use) I'm really liking this one

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shiseido-SENKA-Sunscreen-Mineral-Water/dp/B004Q1WT58

It is very runny and sinks in pretty quickly (3 or 4 minutes) and I can apply foundation using a cushion (from a bb cushion compact) very easily - no pilling. It also looks great with no makeup on top. It isn't oil controlling, but it doesn't make my skin any more oily than normal either. Haven't noticed a change in the amount of acne I have either, so for me that's a win. I can't really comment on white cast because I am deathly pale, but it's a chemical filter sunscreen so white cast shouldn't be a huge issue

I have such oily skin that I don't bother with an AM moisturiser, which means I apply this straight on top of a hydrating toner. However, I have tested it on top of a few lightweight gel moisturisers and it doesn't seem to change the amount of oil I produce, or how easily the sunscreen dries down. So you could just stick to your normal AM moisturiser and layer this on top.

Btw I have never bought it from that Amazon seller so I can't comment on how genuine the seller is - I just posted that link to easily show you which one it is because there are several SPFs with very similar names to that one so searching for it can get confusing. I bought mine on yesstyle but might check out Amazon for my replacement.

They require sealed sunscreen??? That's shitty. I'm a sunscreen junky and it is incredibly rare to find sealed versions. If Hard has lockers, that's the best way to not have to have a brand new sunscreen for each day.

Sunscreen pouches are kind of expensive for what you get and I've only seen them in spf 30. There are many other brands though.

This sunscreen stick comes in sealed packaging. I keep this one in my purse and like it, I just recommend to rub it in after liberally applying it. [This one] (https://www.amazon.com/Neutrogena-Sunscreen-Spectrum-Water-Resistant-PABA-Free/dp/B01BZOMWN2/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=neutrogena+sunscreen+stick&qid=1564881740&s=gateway&sr=8-6#aw-udpv3-customer-reviews_feature_div) I also use regularly but I don't remember if it comes sealed. They both apply clear and I don't find them too greasy.

This has been my face sunscreen this summer and comes in sealed packaging. It rubs in easily and has a light feel.

Asian sunscreens often are in sealed packaging and I highly recommend the Biore Water Essence and Biore Water Gel.

Spray sunscreens rarely come sealed unless you buy in 2-packs. Even then the actual dispenser portion usually isn't sealed. I just bought this and it came in an Amazon plastic bag so that might count and at least it's cheap.

Hope this helps! All but the Asian sunscreens and the pouches I've found easily at drug stores.

For AM moisturizers, Hada Labo Moist as a toner with Sebamed Clear Face Gel (or other gel moisturizer! I personally really like Benton Aloe + Propolis Soothing Gel) is usually recommended for oily, acne prone skin.

For water-resistant sunscreen:

  • Thinksport SPF50 - Limited ingredients list, fragrance free, physical filters, decent price.
  • Elta MD Sport SPF 50 - Rave reviews, fragrance free, combined filters, somewhat expensive.
  • Cotz Sensitive SPF 40 - Oil free, fragrance free, physical filters, mid-range.
  • Alba Botanica Sensitive SPF 30 - Drugstore fave, physical filters, dirt cheap.

Try to purchase from somewhere with a great return policy - trial and error are part of skincare, and sunscreens even more so.
u/strugglingldsatheist · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

Please consider investing in some good pieces of UV protective clothing. They can be more expensive than regular clothes, but I think you definitely need them. Coolibar and Solumbra are good bets. Invest in a good UV protective hat (or several). Wear sunglasses if possible. Do not neglect the back of your neck (which is where skin cancer appears a lot of the time) and your hands. Both Coolibar and Solumbra offer sun protective gloves. I know another redditor also once mentioned Tilley. If there are other pieces of clothing you have that you cannot replace with UV protective clothing, try out SunGuard. (Keep in mind it gives you less sun protection than dedicated UV protective clothing, however.)

As for sunscreen, higher SPF is definitely better. Though the difference, some argue, is minimal, your skin cares about the rays that get in, not the ones that don't. The most important thing to remember with sunscreen is that you must reapply every two hours because sunscreen loses its effectiveness, even if it is a higher SPF sunscreen. Also, remember to protect your lips with a chapstick that has UV protection, and apply sunscreen to the back of your ears.

u/hybridvenice · 3 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I was going to get the Biore Watery Essence but it doesn't protect against UVA1 sun rays, which are highly damaging. I ordered Shiseido Mineral Water SPF50+++, which protects against all rays. Shiseido Aging Care SPF50++++ is a sunscreen with even better protection than the one I ordered but it has parabens and I'm sensitive.

The bottle is small but the sunscreen is thin and easy to apply. Dries down matte, comfortable to wear. Consistency similar to a serum so it's easy to spread. No robust sunscreen smell or stickiness. 40/50 mL is going to last a long time given its consistency but given how cheap these sunscreens are (<10 USD), it wouldn't be a bad idea to get more. Order asap, shipping from Japan will take a long time (~3 weeks). In the meantime, you'll just have to tolerate whatever sticky, thick sunscreen you have on hand.

I'm assuming you live in the US. Thanks to crappy laws, sunscreens available on the US market are 30 years behind compared to those available on other markets. Buy Japanese sunscreen! Experience the future of sunscreen!

u/butmehm2 · 1 pointr/RandomActsofMakeup

Lots of people are mentioning sunscreen, but I wanted to share my favorite. Sheseido Senka UV Gel is an amazing sunscreen for your face. It's SPF 50 and gives you a matte finish. It's a much, much cheaper version of this. I LOVE IT. Know what I don't love? This heat wave we're getting in Minnesota.

u/ClemWillRememberThat · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

Soap like bar soap/hand soap? I think switching to a gentle creamy cleanser or using the oil cleansing method will help you a lot. Bar/hand soaps will have a much higher pH than your skin, which over time is damaging.

I use hemp oil OCM and then double cleanse using Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Hydrating Cleanser. Personally I don't use CeraVe products as I have had negative reactions to them but they are highly recommended around here. I don't have experience with the rest so I can't comment on them, but it looks like only the first three are cleansers.

(You probably already know this but--You'll want to be sure to only introduce one new product at a time after patch testing. I suggest tackling the cleanser first.)

I also suggest wearing >30 SPF sunscreen daily! I'm not a sunscreen queen so I hope someone else can chime in to help, but I do know that a lot of them contain alcohol which I would avoid if I were you because it's rather drying. I'm using this Shiseido Senka sunscreen, which does contain alcohol but I don't find it to be drying at all--it's rather moisturizing actually.

Honestly it sounds like you have dehydrated skin. I've linked a number of resources available on the SCA blog and the sidebar:

i have lupus, so literally any sun exposure covers me in a horrible rash. i've had great luck with underarmour shirts, uniqlo's UPF shirts, and other "athletic" brands like patagonia. I wear a lot of hats from san diego hat company and target. the important thing is to get hats that have UPF so you know you're actually covered. i've turned it into a bit of a trademark so my friends actually ask when i don't have a hat on. you can also get UPF wraps, upf gloves, upf pants... aim for summerweight clothing made of nylon or polyester, which have higher UPF than natural fibers. natural fibers like linen and cotton don't have a high UPF naturally so you can use a laundry additive to increase their sun-blocking ability. athleta and toad&co also has great UPF stuff.

You should find a suncscreen that's ideal to your skin type. About 2 years ago, I also had a hard time applying sunscreen but of the texture and it was mainly because I couldn't find one that would fit well with my skin. For instance, I use sunscreens that are specifically for oily skin (EUCERIN Sun Dry Touch Oil Control Face SPF50+ 50ml!NEW! and La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Sunscreen Milk SPF 60, 5 Fl Oz) because they are formulated with no greasy, no stickiness and feels lightweight ( I personally hate feeling sticky so it's a plus for me). I love those brands and have been using them for a while, when I find a product I like I stick with them. Feel free to ask any questions you may have and hope this helped!

I'm looking for a perfect sunscreen. Have tried Shiseido SENKA Mineral Water UV Gel SPF50 PA+++, too heavy, and am now on Lancome UV Expert XL-Shield™, which is lighter, but I'm not loving the fragrance and it is shiny.

Next on my list is Biore KAO JAPAN AQUA RICH Sarasara SPF50+ PA++++, which I must have heard good things about somewhere (I added it to my Amazon wishlist a while ago). Has anybody tried it, liked it?

u/blueskater · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

I totally get it. I used neutrogena brands for this exact purpose for a long time. - they rub in well, feel good, and are light, etc. And while I used to use neutrogena brands, as they work extremely well and apply well (as long as you don't leave them in a hot car!)

My concern with neutrogena brands (ultrasheer drytouch helioplex broad spectrum) lately, however, is that they contain a compound called oxybenzone, which can interfere with hormones apparently. Because of this, I searched long and hard for an alternative that was as effective, but also did not contain oxybenzone. I tried neutrogena's zinc version but somehow it caused MORE burn to occur than their other brand, despite covering my face in a white paste.

I tried a few other brands, and the one I settled on was Banana boat simply protect sport 50+ spf with "25% fewer ingredients made without oxybenzone and parabens".

I will say that the bananaboat brand does not rub in AS well as the neutrogena brands, and it also does not smell as pleasant, but for all intents and purposes does the job. might be worth a try. Despite taking a bit longer to rub in, it is extremely non-greasy and feels really good.

u/gleeXanadu · 9 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

So the first two sunscreens, the Neutrogena ultra sheer and the Equate Ultra protection, both contain Avobenzone, which can be irritating in the way you describe. The Elta MD doesn't contain avobenzone. If it irritates you though, then don't use it.

If you're sensitive to avobenzone, which seems possible, then you should look for sunscreens that contain Zinc and Titanium as their active ingredients, or have other ingredients that do the same thing as avobenzone but aren't irritating (Tinosorb, Uvinul, etc.). These ingredients are generally not available in the US.

So your options are to look for a physical sunscreen in the US, or to order a chemical sunscreen from overseas. The physical ones are hard to rub in and DO leave a cast, but you can find them in stores. Any brand of baby sunscreen will work, or you can use Neutrogena sheer zinc dry touch. Another one that may or may not work for you is the Australian Gold tinted botanicals sunscreen. The tint may be too light for you, but it should look better than plain white physical sunscreen.

The chemical ones are more cosmetically elegant. You can find Japanese sunscreens that rub in well and contain no avobenzone, but they take for freaking ever to ship to the US. Some favorites are the Biore Aqua rich watery essence, and Nivea sun protect water gel.

u/whatsabrooin · 2 pointsr/AsianBeauty

Normal days I've used the Nivea Sun Protect Water Gel Spf35/Pa +++. I really like this one for every day. Works great under makeup and doesn't irritate my skin.

Recently bought the Biore Uv Aqua Rich Smooth Watery Gel Spf50 + / Pa ++++ to try this summer. The bottle is smaller than the Nivea so not sure if I'll use this on my body...

I definitely use a different set of sunscreens when I go to the beach or plan on any physical activity. If I go in the water, I'll wait to dry down a bit before re-applying. Last summer I used the All-around Safe Block Waterproof Sun Milk SPF50/PA+++ for face.
Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF30 for my body. I used this combo when I climbed a small mountain and it took about 5 hours up and down. Didn't re-apply and didn't burn even though I was sweating like a damn roasted pig.

u/idlehen · 1 pointr/AsianBeauty

Right now I'm using a Shisedo sunscreen that works pretty well but I'm also a fan of Hada Labo UV Creamy and Biore's Watery Essence (just got their PA++++ version). Biore's leave a soother finish for makeup but the other two work fine too.

If you want a physical sunscreen I've tried Innisfree's Eco Safety Perfect Sunblock which I think is mostly physical (I think it has one chemical sunblock in it). I do like it but there is a slight scent so I don't know if that will irritate your skin or not. It does leave a very very minimal white cast and a ever so slightly tacky feeling. I think Innisfree has a 100% physical one but I'm not sure which it was (I think it was the waterproof one)

My routine is still under construction. I am working to reduce redness, Melasma and PIH as well as improve my complexion overall.

AM

  • Cleanse: DIY cleansing oil (3:1 sweet almond oil to castor oil) applied prior to shower. This gives the oils time to work and also protects my face from shampoo and conditioner.
  • Cleanse: Remove oil with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and a microfiber cloth.
  • Cleanse: Once every week or two I'll use Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque.
  • Brighten: Hyaluronic Acid
  • Protect: Nivea Protect Water Gel Sunscreen

    PM

  • Cleanse: Wash with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, a Konjac sponge and a microfiber cloth.
  • BHA: Stridex in the red box
  • AHA: Alpha Hydrox Enhanced Lotion 10% Glycolic AHA
  • Brighten: Hyaluronic Acid
  • Moisturize: Cerave Moisturizing Lotion

The next thing I want to add is a vitamin C serum in the AM. Beyond that I'm not sure.

Apart from the oils and sunscreen, most of these represent the first brand I've tried for a given product. I am undecided if I'll switch brands when the ones above run out. I'm not looking forward to patch testing and starting over but how else will I know if something else works better?

I soak my Konjac sponge in white vinegar weekly and use a new microfiber cloth each day.

I just left for a family wedding, so I haven't patch tested any of them yet. The urge was strong though. I wanted to see and feel the finish of these sunscreens!! But the thought of having a reaction at a family wedding with people I haven't seen in 15 years...I resisted.

I also got some makeup too, but need to do some swatches/photos. I'll post that to /r/AsianBeauty or /r/makeupaddiction.

One of the most popular sunscreens in the r/asianbeauty sub is this one by Bioré and another one that I tried that also worked well was this one by Nivea.

I just pulled links to the products from Amazon to show you what they are, but if you want to purchase them, please make sure you look for the best prices.

Finally! I have found my people, I too suffer from the tragedy that is breaking out from anything that is not a gel. Fear not, as I have tested many things and I love to share.

  • Mizon Snail Recovery Gel Cream: This is what started it all, my very first asian beauty product, as well as my very first gel. It was love at first pat, as I have rebought this 8 times, I will never give it up. It is inexpensive, comes in a decent size, and my skin drinks it up.

  • Mizon No 1 King's Berry Aqua Step Up Cream: Holy cow, they weren't kidding aroudn when they packaged this beast. It comes in a huge 300 ml container that I will never finish. I am not a fan of the smell, but I have been using it it as the base of my DIY sheet masks so I will probably repurchase it for that alone.

  • Rohto Hadarabo Gokujun Hyaluronic Cream: This is not 100% a gel, it not a a clear gel but more like half way between a gel and a cream. I never got to properly test it out, but since I discovered cream consistencies were the cause of my breakouts, I don't want to risk it. It sits perched on my mantle of discarded products that I just occasionally look at, open and smell, and then walk away from sadly.

  • Rosette Ceramide Gel: I have only been patch testing this for about 4 days now, it does leave a slightly sticky film but since I plan on using it in my PM routine, I am not all that concerned about it. So far so good, it doesn't have a harsh smell, and my skin feels super refreshed in the morning.

  • Mizon Water Max Aqua Gel Cream: I got a sample of this, and meh. While it does have the gel constancy that I love, I didn't see that it did anything for my skin. I will finish my sample, but I will probably not purchase a full size since I have had much better results from the other Mizon products I have tried.

  • Jelly Suncreen : Hype! Hype! Hype! It is everything that I never knew that I needed. It is both a physical and chemical sunscreen with no alcohol in the ingredients and it is a gel! Now I am the gel goddess that I always knew I could be.

Thank you very much! I booked a hanauma bay tour for friday morning! My wife is super excited!
Also we're planning on getting a couple tubes of this this sun screen and after reading your linked article it seems I have to be very wary of what the package reads as it maybe "lying" to me. So we went ahead and ordered a couple more rashguards each from amazon (we already got a few after reading some other posts here). Thank you again for your help!

IIRC, using half the amount of recommended sunscreen gives you the square root of the SPF. So using 1/8 tsp of SPF 50 would give you ~7 SPF.

I do use the full 1/4 tsp. Some sunscreens are really good at sinking in quickly and not being greasy. Asian sunscreens are popular for that reason. I just finished a bottle of this sunscreen, which isn't too expensive and wasn't very greasy. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch is also pretty popular around here and easy to find.

The best thing for you to do is take the three products ingredients and put them in an excel spreadsheet and highlight the duplicate values. When I did that, there were two ingredients that were in all three: Phenoxyethanol and Sodium Hyaluronate. You can compare at least to see if Sodium Hyaluronate is in any products that you use. This sunmilk from The Face Shop and also This Shiseido Mineral Water UV seem to be free of both of those.

u/rileyriot · 26 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

Not OP but I have my eyebrows microbladed as well. I use SPF 50 on them, and it's definitely recommended. They're probably more susceptible to fading than normal tattoos even because the ink is only deposited in the epidermis, whereas tattoos are in the dermis (or that's my understanding at least). Here's the sunscreen I use, it's super light and not creamy or streaky, https://www.amazon.ca/Shiseido-SENKA-Sunscreen-Mineral-Water/dp/B004Q1WT58, so you don't have to worry about it looking white on your face.

No apology needed! I guess I kind of forgot that this is a real dermatologist and I'm a real patient to him, and what I say/think/feel matters, haha. It was just so easy a process that it seemed like an online quiz that pops out automated results and ships a package, you know?

I have oily skin, which I guess is a factor in this, too, and I forgot to mention in my original response to you :P

Lazy copypasta of his message to me:

  1. Use a cleanser designed for oily skin. Panoxyl 4% Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Creamy Wash http://amzn.to/1mPHbrD is a favorite with my patients, as is Clean & Clear Advantage 3-in-1 Exfoliating Cleanser (5%) http://amzn.com/B002UC5ZVA. Topix Benzoyl Peroxide 10% Wash http://amzn.to/1tIUqAl is another more economical option, although higher concentrations of benzoyl peroxide do not necessarily work better, and sometimes can irritate more.

  2. Use an oil-free sunscreen. EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 http://amzn.to/1mGsHz is a good option. If you want a mattifier, try Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 http://amzn.com/B001LNTNGC .

My sister successfully treated a dime size melasma spot on her cheek below the orbital bone. She used Admire My Skin Hydroquinone 2% from Amazon. AMS Hydroquinone contains 2% hydroquinone, Salicylic Acid, Kojic Acid, Azelaic Acid, Lactic Acid, Vitamin C and others in the formulation. She used it twice a day (even though the instruction said at night). She applied the gel with a Q-tip on to the spot on dried cleaned skin. She avoided applying moisturizer over the spot. She thinks applying the gel over or under another product will dampen its effectiveness. And she applied SPF every day (indoor or outdoor, rain or shine). Everytime she stepped outside she would reapply SPF with the focus on the spot. This is important because the formulation contains a host of acids which will cause the skin to be sensitive to UV rays. CATRIN mineral SPF 46 or Supergoop Glow Stick will help with reapplication if you use makeup. The spot will get darker and then the darkened skin will flake off. Continue to protect the area continuously with SPF as I heard melasma can easily return. Her hasn't but she's very diligent with SPF.

When all OTC fails go to the dermatologist and ask for prescription strength hydroquinone 4% and azeleic acid 20% as hydroquinone 4% is the gold standard for hyperpigmentation (disregarding expensive laser treatments). Azeleic acid is an underrated active that is slowly getting attention for reducing hyperpigmentation and skin sensitivity (commonly used to treat rosacea).

I love Shiseido's senka mineral water uv gel. It fluctuates between $6-8 for 40 mL on amazon. It's very thin/watery, doesn't leave a whitecast as far as I can tell, isn't greasy on my combo/oily skin.

I also like Nivea's sun protect water gel (not super protect), which I can't find on amazon anymore for some reason. It has the texture/finish of Clinique's dramatically different moisturizing gel for oily/combo skin.

A hat that will keep the sun out of your face - The sun is not your friend. Sunny days may be beautiful, but they're dangerous! As you know, sun is pretty bad for your eyes and skin. So be sure to be wearing a hat that will shade your face. Also, in addition to the hat, don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses.

As a pale-skinned person, I have learned to do all I can to protect myself. Sunburn is no fun at all! But even if you don't burn and only tan, it's still not good for you.

Well, here's to a sunburn-free vacation! Cheers!

u/snailicide · 17 pointsr/BeautyGuruChatter

unfortunately I think casket ready is always a thing with mineral sunscreens since zinc and titanium dioxide are white. Even in the more micronized/small particle size versions its still detectable. If it is invisible on the skin not enough is applied or it's ... like this product ...that was overnight popular but turned out to be a lie: https://www.amazon.com/Look-At-Me-Hyaluronic-Moisturizer/dp/B011YJICXW . unfortunately, if it's too good to be true it probably is with physical sunscreens. It also sucks that this category of mineral only sunscreen excludes demographics but there is only so transparent zinc and titanium are going to get. Does putting foundation on top of ( the least white paste ) counteract the corpse effect for deeper skin tones? Or would it be better to use a tinted sunscreen? I feel like foundation over the top probably ends up looking better.

u/SiameseGunKiss · 3 pointsr/AskWomen

You should try an Asian sunscreen! They're way ahead of us in terms of facial sunscreens, I swear. I use shiseido senka mineral uv gel and it's amazing. Which Neutrogena sunscreen did you try? Pure & Free Baby has a white cast but doesn't irritate my skin at all. I also have good luck with Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry Touch.

For a sunscreen people from here usually recommend Shiseido SPF 50 UV Gel and it's fairly cheap. What people have also said in the past, (and I have yet to try this but I will) is putting on sunscreen then moisturizer at the same time THEN your make up (if I got that order right), and apparently the Shiseido sunscreen is good for things like that.

Saying apparently because I ordered it and I'm waiting for it to come, lol. And for my oil cleansing method, I use argon oil. I've tried olive oil, jojoba oil and maracula (sp?) oil and found argon left my skin the softest. Just my two cents!

FYI I think you've been missing the "reply" button at the bottom of people's posts :)

I'm completely new to foundation, but I did a bunch of research on MUA and ended up buying MAC studio fix powder plus foundation. I also have combination skin, so I use Murad oil-control mattifier to keep from looking shiny and use the powder/foundation after that. I've had it for less than a week, but I love it. It comes with a puff which I believe gives fuller coverage, but I don't really need much. I think the overall consensus is to use a brush...I don't have a foundation brush at the moment, so I've just been using a makeup sponge to sort of pat it on :)

I find a lot of Western drugstore brand sunscreens have a very strong smell and white caste. I much prefer Asian brand sunscreen. It's generally a lot milkier (thinner application), absorbs quickly, minimal smell and no white caste.

I use Shiseido SENKA Mineral Water UV Gel SPF50 and love it. Biore also carries some great Japanese sunscreens, as well as Hado Labo.

u/interstatetornado · 3 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I found the biore watery essence too drying and really like the Shiseido SENKA Aging Care and SENKA Mineral Water UV Gel. The Biore Aqua Rich Watery Gel is a little better than the Watery Essence as well, though not as good as the two Shiseidos.

I'm currently using EltaMd UV Shield which is chemical/physical. I'm not happy with it, but it's the only sunscreen that isn't thick and pasty (which causes irritation on my skin when I try to rub it in) and doesn't piss off my skin terribly. I'm sensitive to fatty alcohols, and this sunscreen turns my face red (due to the fatty alcohols), but it helps the overall texture of my skin and I'm able to cover the redness with makeup.

Now, for Asian sunscreens, there are some without alcohols. I've tried the Korean Jelly sunscreen which is supposed to be super moisturizing, and it didn't agree with my skin, but if it's not too pricy, it would be an interesting one to try. It does have fragrance. I'm not sure if this is the cause of my irritation or not, but it worked well under makeup, just didn't help my dehydrated skin like the EltaMd one. It honestly feels like a nice gel-based moisturizer.

I would just try to reapply the sunscreen you already have to your nose area. The brand Coolibar has a lot of sun protective clothing, like this mask that might help. They have scarves, shirts, and other items too. A Coolibar shirt might be something you can wear that will protect your chest.

For chest acne, this salicylic acid spray has good reviews. You could also use something like stridex. I've also heard of people using medicated facial washes,Neutrogena has one for the body

You might switch to a mineral sunscreen spray, something that uses zinc or titanium dioxide, sometimes chemical filters can break people out. This one uses 14% zinc Also combo filters (zinc and a chemical filter like octinoxate) can also be gentle, this one is a combo You may have to do some additional searching to find a spray sunscreen that suits your needs, it does seem more difficult to find mineral spray sunscreens

I recently bought this sunscreen that's imported from Japan.
Shiseido SENKA | Sunscreen | Mineral Water UV Gel SPF50 PA+++ 40ml https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004Q1WT58/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_MLfCxb051J7JQ

It contains zinc oxide and has absolutely NO white cast. It also does leave any residue, but does not dry you out. That's especially important to me because my face is still oily even though I'm on 40mg of Absorica per day (Male, 145lbs, 21yrs). It's my holy grail sunscreen that's for sure. The FDA has yet to approve many ingredients that the rest of the world already uses in their sunscreens, so it's pretty "advanced" compared to American sunscreens. Good luck.

u/theeternalnoob · 2 pointsr/AsianBeauty

Quite honestly, the most cost-effective option I've found for this is the regular drugstore aerosol type sunscreens, which tend to rub off quickly on me because I sweat a lot. My current alternative is lots of UV protective clothing, which is more of an investment, but more comfortable and less of a hassle long-term.

These Nivea and Skin Aqua options also get good reviews.

u/readditlater · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

For your face at least, I recommend a stick sunscreen applied heavily. Stick sunscreens contain waxes to hold them up, which also makes them very resistant to water and sweat and such.

As for brand recs: Neutrogena good ones. This one is probably really resistant.

Good luck!

2 things:

  1. Makeup + sunscreen != adequate sun protection. More often than not you'd have to put a METRIC SHIT TON of makeup on to even get most of the protection. So... my advice, you can use it, but don't rebuy, you definitely need a separate sunscreen. And you're just paying more for literally no reason because no one is going to put THAT MUCH makeup on. (However, I do want to see a photo of someone trying. lol)

  2. It sounds like both of your options aren't the greatest, I like the Neutrogena ultra sheer dry touch (I have SPF 45) and Neutrogena pure and free baby sunblock. But your results may vary. The baby stuff is a bit greasy from time to time, but I like it when I'm outside a lot or on the lake/swimming/whatever because it doesn't cause my skin to dry out.

You could also do a search on this sub for sunscreens.

Edit: to answer your question: the Ansolar fluid would probably be the best of your options for what you have available right now, but the oiliness might cause breakouts. Sorry I don't have a better answer, sunscreens are generally hit or miss with a lot of people and it's hard to say what's best.

I know what you mean! I hate the greasy look. One thing that helped with the greasiness is the make-up I mentioned above, this powder completely gets rid of the shine. I'm sure there are other powders out there that would help too, it would just take some trial and error.

There are plenty of good sunscreens but not many contain niacinamide. If you want something super matte, look into Asian sunscreens like this one. They take forever to ship but they're cheap. Personally, I haven't tried them but plenty of others have so I'm sure your questions would be answered.

Very generous! A $25 limit gives one some options...

A $25 donation to paleontology at the Museum of the Rockies would mean a lot. I love science and they do good work.

I'd love to have five $5 gift card codes to use for group gifting. Ditto, an IOU for bomb entries.

Socks. Because socks.

I've been keeping an eye out for a warmer sweater but I don't know if my current 50/50 merino/acrylic will be beat for <$25...

Ooh - this! Have any of you tried it? [Or two bottles of sunscreen.]

Actually, it seems most basic retail drug stores sunscreens are like 4-5%. At least when I was at my local Walgreens all the physical sunscreens were around this % range. But thank you for the link, I didn't realize there were far higher % physical sunscreens out there. In fact I found one that seems kind of promising (Thinkbaby Sunscreen, SPF 50+ ) with a very high Zinc Oxide amount of 20% on Amazon. It's not AB but it's pretty cheap, scores really well on EWG, and can be bought in the States.

Careful using too much setting powder, I used to make that mistake. It will make your foundation look caked on.

I use Mac these days because I finally found one super easy to apply. It's a liquid. Took a lot of playing around to find the right brush as well It doesn't always hide the shadow as well. But I am starting laser in a few weeks. So in a few months that won't be an issue.

I love this stuff.

I have sensitive skin and eyes and it is a rare sunscreen that doesn't make my face and eyes burn, but this one doesn't. It didn't seem to bother my son either. It also has the two active ingredients recommended by the Mayo Clinic for sunscreens: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

But, mostly I just try to keep him out of the sun. He has a wide brimmed sunhat and I put him in a loose, white, long-sleeved onesie, if he's going to be in a sunny place. More than anything, I just keep him under a tree or umbrella.

u/kawausokoi · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

I'm on 0.04% and am a very fair skinned female (Celtic and Nordic descent) living in California. Even though I'm not typically outside for more than 20% of my day, I still wear a higher SPF/PA++++ because with the tretinoin the risk of sun damage is significantly increased. Any time you leave the house during the day or sit next to a window, you're being exposed to UV of some sort. Do you drive to work? Walk to the store? It may not seem like it, but all those little instances add up. Plus, if you're wearing a chemical sunscreen and not reapplying, it could be entirely broken down by the time you take your lunch break or leave work.

When I started on tretinoin, I had to go very slowly. Even every other night could get to be too much. I'd notice that with specific products (LaRoche Posay Helios sunscreen) my face felt like it was burning on contact, but there was no additional redness. I would also break out far worse when my skin was in that state. I'd damaged my moisture barrier by over-doing the tretinoin, not moisturizing enough, and not staying hydrated.

I also noticed that with the 0.04%, and recent hormonal changes, my skin didn't like oils anymore. A little Argan or Jojoba here and there is ok for me now, but I had to stop them entirely for at least a month before my skin cleared everything.

You're on 0.08%, which is twice the strength of my script. I think you may have dehydrated your skin and damaged your moisture barrier. The CeraVe PM may not be enough right now. From looking at your routine, it seems as though you're over-cleansing with the foaming wash and Clairsonic. Maybe try the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser in the AM or just rinse with water in the AM and use the CeraVe Hydrating at night.

Try stopping the Retin-A for two nights, then do every third night for a week or two, then every other night. I would also back off of the manual exfoliation (Clairsonic) and clay/charcoal masks until the breakouts clear up. With a higher concentration tretinoin in combination with the azelaic acid in the AM, your skin is probably really sensitive now.

I know I recommended the Biore Aqua Riche earlier, but after reading your routine I recommend a more hydrating sunscreen like Elta MD or my new favorite Korean Jelly Sunscreen.

I also highly recommend taking a D3 supplement with some fish oil supplements in the morning and a calcium supplement with dinner. These seem to have helped me a lot, along with taking a much more gentle approach to my skin.

u/raw-sienna · 1 pointr/blackladies

If you're going to be outside all day in strong UV it's absolutely required. I live in Australia and in the summer I stay out of the sun in the middle of the day and afternoon completely if I can help it.

You can actually buy a laundry treatment that can build up the UPF rating of your clothes if you want extra protection too.

Rant: I think Shiseido Senka Mineral Water UV Gel SPF50 PA+++ is breaking me out. I've used it like twice before, and it was fine. However, this time, I was taking a shower, and I could definitely feel small bumps on my face. I'm not sure if it was because I accidentally applied a lot in the morning or maybe because the weather is colder now.

I'm not sure if I'll try using it again in the future since I don't want to break out again which sucks because so many reviews talked about how mattifying it was, and I have really oily skin. It was only $7, so I guess it's not that big of a deal.

I just bought Biore UV Aqua Rich Smooth Watery Gel SPF50+ Pa ++++. Hopefully, this one will be my holy grail.

I use this and it seems to not irritate my face! It's very smooth and feels like it absorbs into the skin instead of sitting on top of the skin if that makes sense.

I've used the Orange/yellow packaging one also. That's got a little bit of a different texture, is anti-aging but I don't think my skin likes that one as much.

u/m0nchi3 · 1 pointr/AsianBeauty

For those of you who have used LookAtMe's Jelly Sunscreen, how much do you use? There's that general rule about using a tablespoon(?) of sunscreen, but I find that using that much overwhelms my skin and causes me to be super oily. Would using less mean I get less protection?

u/Yoyochan · 3 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

What's weird about this product is that I was doing well with it for about 4 months until I suddenly started getting whiteheads just on my collarbones. This is totally unusual for me, and I wasn't getting any on my face, despite using the product there too. The only thing I was using in that area was the biore aqua rich watery essence sunscreen, and when I stopped using it the whiteheads cleared up almost immediately.

I still use it for my hands and arms (especially when I'm out and about since it evaporates/soaks in so well) and have since switched to Shiseido SENKA Mineral Water UV Gel for my face. Different texture, but still works nicely under makeup, and dries to a soft semi-matte.

I know how much the sunscreen struggle can suck and it is usually the most expensive part of someone's routine, but honestly in the long run you might as well not being using trentinoin cause most of the problems that it helps are made worse by the sun and faster and more severe than normal skin cause of the drug. You won't see it right away but its happening.

Are you in the US?

Edit: If you are in the US I see Banana Boat Natural Reflect being recommended a lot. It's cheap, comes in a large tube, is a physical sunscreen so good for sensitive skin, and actually the zinc oxide for a lot of people calms redness. Also here's the cosdna and it doesn't have very comedogenic ingredients so there's at least a decent chance that you won't break out. I've heard it can be a bit shiny but if you're powdering anyways that's not an issue.

u/bummer_camp · 2 pointsr/ftm

Yep it does, unless you're wearing UV blocking clothing. It's not as intense as direct sunlight for sure but definitely enough to consider wearing sunscreen under your clothes if you want to be meticulous about your scars. I swipe a sunscreen stick over my scars every morning before getting dressed and it stays on all day.

It's not coppertone level cheap, but it won't white cast you, is ~$13 and change for 5oz and would likely be a good choice for an indoor facial sunscreen

I'm not /u/ohthewerewolf but I'm also very dry and I like this one!

This is what they've recommended for me.

Keep in mind, anything over 35 SPF isn't really doing much more. This sunscreen just doesn't leave you feeling oily or greasy, and thus you tend to put more on. Which is GOOD. You need to be very generous with sunscreen if you plan to be in the sun for long periods of time. And you should be reapplying the same amount every 2-3 hours. More if you're sweating it off. This sunscreen isn't waterproof, I can't remember what my GF bought us for that.

Also, wear sun glasses, hats, and photo protective clothing. I personally hike in one of these hats and wear UV blocking sun glasses. I also don't take off my shirt when I go to the beach, instead I wear a photo protective water shirt. If you are continually getting sun burns even with appropriate sunscreen application you should definitely reconsider what you're wearing. There are a lot of clothing companies that make UV protective sport wear that is thin and breezy so you won't be hot at all.

Sun burns are no joke. Skin cancer is not something you want to go through.

I got this one and I really like it. I've got oily skin and it keeps oil at bay pretty well and goes on really light! I don't wear makeup often, but it totally could be used as primer with a matte finish

I use Murad Oil-control Mattifier SPF 15 Pa++ - 1.7 Oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001LNTNGC/. You should reapply after 4-8 hours depending on the oil production of your face. SPF is a plus. It’s been a godsend for me.

I've tried to embrace the "solid" products as much as I can.

You can make (or buy) toothpaste dots.

I've done solid shampoo and conditioner. I don't like it for trips where I need to look good, but for beach/adventure trips where I'm getting the "beach hair" look anyway I'll do solids.

Might want to look into a solid moisturizing bar.

I also swear by solid sunscreen, and I usually turn into a lobster, so I can promise it works. Either this kind or this kind.

I've left mascara and lipsticks loose in my bags and haven't had problems. I also second the recommendation to get TSA Pre-check for a little extra.

I use Murad Oil-Control Mattifier. It is the only thing I've ever tried that actually makes a difference in the amount of oil my skin produces. And that's saying a lot considering I have Mediterranean skin and live in hot, humid Florida. It is pricy, but it is worth it for a quality product that actually works. Also it happens to be on sale on Amazon right now! http://www.amazon.com/Murad-Oil-Control-Mattifier-SPF-1-7/dp/B001LNTNGC

What sunscreen do you use? It might be easier/cheaper to just swap out sunscreens for one that goes nicer under makeup rather than changing around your whole foundation routine. The Shiseido Hada Senka sunscreen is quite affordable and leaves my skin matte and touchable once it's sunk in (after about 10 minutes or so - I usually put it on, eat breakfast, then come back and do my makeup).

Someone else mentioned Rit Sunguard, which I think is a good way to add some extra SPF to clothes!

u/jrobertson427 · 14 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

Thanks!

I was using Shiseido SENKA Mineral Water UV Gel SPF50 PA+++

For days when I was just running outside for a short time I used Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 45

Japanese sunscreen! It's non-greasy and blends in nicely. As an example, I get this one

u/Ouri · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

You can invest in clothes with UPF protection such as:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I0MNB2Y/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3U2UMS22IVPCP&coliid=I1N1AF60RHJOUU

There's also ways you can add UPF protection to your regular clothes like with sunguard and upf spray

The sunscreen smell is really tough to avoid. Hawaiian Tropic and Australian Gold are both heavily scented, but (IMO) its a very good smell. Babyganics Zinc Sunscreen is a really good heavy duty SPF with no smell. It may lean a biiiiiit on the oily side? But I'm not sure. My skin is dry so I'm not the best judge of that.

Timetot is a funny word.

An Arizona baby needs sunblock.

u/yippeee · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch every day. I really like it, my only problem with it is that it sings if I get it too close to my eyes. I wear sunglasses to protect them instead.

I'm looking into sunscreens and I'm thinking about picking up Banana Boat Sunscreen Sport Family Size Broad Spectrum Sun Care Sunscreen Lotion - SPF 50 What are some of your experiences with this product? And also is this the same product?

What sort of product/technique should I look into if I have cuts, some redness, and dry sensitive skin after shaving?

u/throwaway_helpwface · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

I recently read through this thread about treating dehydrated skin - seems you need ceramides & fatty acids, not just a good moisturizer, to actually repair the moisture barrier.

I am pretty convinced I have oily skin, not dehydrated, but I want to try out some barrier-repairing products just to see.

Does anyone have any affordable product recommendations? And how would you incorporate them? My location is Colorado USA, and I prefer to shop online at Ulta/Amazon/Sallys, etc.

I was considering CeraVe Healing Ointment, although I am nervous about using something so greasy (I hate the way most occlusives feel, and I toss and turn all night so it would get everywhere)

Edit - Current routine:

AM

  • Garnier mattifying micellar water (green cap)
  • Sometimes this sunscreen

    PM

  • Cleanse with Free and Clean Liquid Cleanser
  • Vanicream Lite Lotion
  • Melazepam (Haven't been using this for the past week or so, but plan to add it back in)

You might like La Roche-Posay's Melt-in Milk Sunscreen: https://www.amazon.com/Roche-Posay-Anthelios-Sunscreen-Lotion-Antioxidants/dp/B002CML1VG. I use the "water feel" version of this formula every day, and tried this one out thinking I'd like it, too, but it leaves my skin too shiny and tacky.

I feel you so hard on this. I actually just got this Shiseido sunscreen because it's supposed to go well under makeup, and I shit you not it controls my oil better than anything else I come across.

Usually I'm an oil slick by the three or four hour mark (no joke, like I touch my finger to my cheek and it just slides around). I'm currently at the thirteen hour mark of my makeup and I've only gathered a little sheen. The only unfortunate part is that I can't use it for special occasions where pictures are being taken because of the flashback :/
