We actualy found a beast of a spider in our luggage one morning. Unfortunately, battle had to ensue and it was a serious duel. Obviously one of us won. keep your tent closed up tightly and you should have no issues, but keep an eye out of course. I posted a good list of tips on another thread that outlines camping at this location.

I have a few solutions to this as i myself have gone to the extremes on sleep deprivation at lib. Here are a few game changers that made a world of difference.

Your tent. We found that righ as the sun comes up sleep is almost impossible due to light and rockstar heat. We got a bunch of those emergency thermal blankets and lined the exterior of our tent almost entiely in them. This both blocks light and a huge amount of sun heat. They make it seem like air conditioning compared to not using them. Packing tape works very well on holding them together and allows you to customize their shape to fit your specific tent. Another tip is to sandwich or layer them between a fabric material to dampen the noise they make with the wind as they move. Those mitary guilly style camo covers work well too. You basically want to hold them down as well as possible to limit how much they move to eliminate the noise they make, which is like tin foil. Be creative and innovative with these as they can look really cool too! Your tent will be dramatically more comfortable all day.

They come in multi packs to save money. Also if you have extra, im sure your neighbors will appreciate it greatly if you donate a few. The only drawback is the noise, so ensure you address this. Installing them on the inside of your tent is also an option.

We discovered these and theyre awesome! We wet them down at the water stations which are everywhere throughout Lib. They feel amazing in the sun and in a wierd way are kinda fun, idk. Lol

Bring vitamins! I recommend D3, ZINC, B COMPLEX, AND FISH OILS.
Make sure you keep these all cool and dry.
I recommended a cooler scenario in another sub, but ill repeat it here.

Dry ice in your cooler is the best way to refrigerate all weekend that i have found, minus actually having a refrigerator.

Tip: careful with dry ice as it can burn you and mess up your cooler if not prepared properly. Wrap it in brown paper to prevent direct contact with the sides and bottom of your cooler. Also, if you put actual ice around the dry ice this works too. We got a solid 3 days of awesome cooler performance this way. Cover your cooler during the day with the above mentioned mylar blankets for even better performance.

Protein power! You need nutrition if you want to rage like a rockstar! Many flavors and its super fast and simple to prepare. I use mp combat protein, works well and tastes great!

Bed/air mattress. One oddity we found with our air mattress. At night the ground and ambient air temp drops a bunch on some occasions. So the air inside the mattress cools as well which made for an extra chilly experience one night. We insulated the bottom and sides of our air mattress with a fleece or similar blanket which helped keep our body heat inside the mattress.

Feed me! Bring good healthy food like apples, avocados, bananas, pita bread, peanut butter or almond butter. These are delicious and full of proper energy. Keep junk food to a minimum, but dont eliminate it, because well, sometimes cheese its are bomb as hell! You just dont want to be weighed down by garbage. Tip: the acai warrior bowls at the food courts are legit! And, try the poutine for breakfast! You wont regret! Also we found that Mountain house freeze dried packets are a convenient and awesome way to chow down. You'll need hot water for some and regular temp for the cereals and desserts.

I hope this helps. Unfortunately I can't be at LIB this year, so this post helps me cope with said situation.

Do it before she arrives. It is more difficult to set them yourself but once you have them in place you can hide the straps easy. The First

Since I don't drink, my experience with wine is limited, but as a mother I have quite a lot of experience with small creatures who like to whine. We all know the only way to keep these little creatures (otherwise known as children) from excessive whining is to keep them distracted and entertained.


The Second

How is it that muggles can keep their homes clean without magic or house elves? I can't even think about the hard work it must take to keep a tidy home without magic, using nothing but a basic broom! And did you know they only use brooms for cleaning? Imagine! If I couldn't lift off the ground on my broom, I don't know what I'd do! How would I travel?! Surely those large metal boxes they put up in the sky can't be safe! How do they stay in the air without magic?! I just don't know how I'd live if I were a muggle.


The Third

Of all the things that people have put on their heads throughout history, only the hat lived on as the one piece of attire universally accepted to protect the tops of heads. There was a short period of time between 1622 and 1624 in which wizards commonly wore ornamental bonsai trees atop their heads, but this fad inevitably led to a large increase in bee stings during the spring and summer months when bees became interested pollinating the head wear. The Fifth

When traveling, it is important to pack smartly. How many things can you fit in your trunk, and will there be room for everything you'll need? Sometimes, it is simply impossible to bring every item on your list in just one trunk, but two or three trunks is just too much to carry when passing through muggle areas where magic use is restricted. That's why some witches and wizards decide to use an Undetectable Extension charm. This charm allows your trunk or bag to extend within, so that you can fit a nearly infinite amount of items in a finite space. This charm leaves items bigger on the inside, allowing for a much easier and hassle-free travel experience.


The Bonus

Any superhero knows that a cape is not a complete disguise. Well, any hero besides superman. If you're going to wear a cape, you've also got to have a mask. It's probably best if the mask has eye holes, though...


Edit!!! Oh, I forgot to say why I will NEED these items! The first is self-explanatory, I'll need to keep the whining to a minimum in order to focus on the work I'm assigned, especially if I take potions. You know Snape is going to assign at least a dozen parchments worth of writing every week. The second is what I'll need to use in order to get across the Atlantic to attend Hogwarts! No matter how much I prefer traveling by broom, I can't risk such a long flight alone. The third is something all students will need, because without the sorting hat it would be impossible to be sorted into our houses! The fourth is, of course, incredibly important. I'm sure I'll be frequenting the Hogwarts Library throughout my time there. The fifth will be the very first thing I use, because without my trunk being bigger on the inside they'll never even let me onto the plane! I'd have way too many bags and trunks without that charm. And of course, as for the bonus, I'll need that mask in order to sleep, because my dorm mates are quite rowdy and I expect them to be using magic well into the evening most nights. Along with the eye mask, I'll also be packing several pairs of ear plugs!

I tried to post this earlier, but I think the age of my account triggered the filter:

The Waterfall system is an interesting idea, but is it worth it at its current price? In a comment on the original announcement post, Abe mentioned that the Waterfall could hold "more than people are assuming," and that's technically true. The system can accommodate my Spirit-Airlines-LA-to-San-Francisco-No-Carry-On flying kit, which includes a water bottle, a light shell jacket, a book, a sleep mask, ear plugs, a passport wallet (can't find a link for this, it's a slim-ish RRL epi-leather thing), and a cell phone charger with cord--but not comfortably. If you're only carrying flat things (even heavy ones), it's surprisingly stable and very pleasant to use. But when items with a horizontal height of more than an inch or so are loaded into it, the system starts to feel unbalanced and awkward to me.

It might be okay as a super-minimalist laptop bag, but I'd be afraid to set it down anywhere without giving the landing zone some thought. The last generation 13MBP feels made for it, but nothing bigger than that, including the new 15-inch models, will fit. You can throw the charger in the medium pouch, but if you wrap the cord around it like I do, it bulges pretty substantially, and will bang into the laptop (audibly) if you move at anything faster than a walking pace.

In general, I think the bag looks quite nice, and I actually enjoy the mandatory compartmentalization. The AustriAlpin slide adjuster works well, but some of the coating was worn off around the mechanism when it arrived. That's a small thing, but I really feel that if it's going to maintain it's current $425 price-point after the experimental phase, it's really going to have to be perfect. The Dynylon Molly Webbing deserves a shoutout, as it looks much better than tradition molle (especially on the front, where it's installed in such as way as to be slightly recessed). The main Dyneema material is still its same crinkly self, and for whatever reason this bag felt louder than the Quadzip to me, especially when it rubbed against the gore-tex of my coat.

In short, I quite like this bag aesthetically, and I'm glad that Outlier decided to do the experiment, but my own use case is too limited to justify the somewhat eye-watering price tag. Fortunately, I do still have a very nice non-backpack option that I'm quite attached to.

Personally I think there's really no proper way to value a good night's sleep. After years of dealing with poor sleep due to breathing problems in a dry climate and living with obnoxious neighbors whose religion prohibits using headphones figuring out some cheap solutions to my sleep issues has yielded immeasurable quality of life improvements.

Nasal dialaters.

I was having a lot of problems sleeping due to narrow nasal pathways + seasonal changes and my BP was off the charts. The quality of life improvement from quality sleep is hard to quantify as a value.

I have a ridiculously loud 300lb stomping upstairs neighbor who enjoys putting together furniture at 3am due to either meth or sleep apnea or both. He also really enjoys his shitty 1990s R&B. I've had several confrontations and he's changed some of it but you can't request someone not walk around their apartment when they want. I think he has knee problems so his steps are really heavy. These things are the best answer I could find. If I put these on + a TV show it drowns him out. It sucks to rely on noise to cancel out other noise but I love these things, they're super comfortable and they do the job I need.

So I'm the sort of person who is willing to spend the right amount of money when there's value. For me roasting my own coffee provides tons of value. For starters you can order green beans online for $3-5 a lb. I order 6+ months worth of coffee at a time for around $100, give or take. This roaster has now paid for itself compared to buying coffee at my favorite roaster and is in line with the stale, burnt tasting shit you can buy in giant vats at the grocery store.

But beyond just that I get the supreme joy of truly fresh roasted coffee roasted to a level I like which is a lot different than the black and greasy shit you'll get at Kroger's or whatever. I also love that I can bring this is going to be useful if/when I'm living on a homestead somewhere.

Stainless Steel French Press

Goes with the above. I used to buy glass ones and break them, but this $40 french press will probably last for a very long time with only the screen to worry about replacing and god only knows how long that will take.

It's not much of a workout, but it's quieter and still does the same job as the electric one I had purchased and unless other electric ones I'm not sure this one will ever break. Ok, I have slept horribly for most of my life. I've come up with things that help me, but I have to be strict with myself.

  • Have a sleep schedule for as much of the week as possible. To bed at 10:30, up at 6:30. Customize it to you. Stick to it. This is the most important component.

  • No screens 1 hour before bed. If you must, utilize f.lux on your computer or something similar on your phone. Avoid social media or reddit. You don't want your brain getting shots of pleasurable addictive like hormones when your ready to sleep.

  • Ear plugs. Just enough to dampen odd noises. These are what I use: Howard Leight Earplugs. Yes their pink, but their low strength and I still hear my alarm.

  • Eye mask.

  • Have a set schedule before bed. Snack, brush teeth, floss, wash face, insert other self care here.

  • Optional: I downloaded the app Calm. They have stories you can listen to that help you fall asleep. One read by Stephen Fry!

I cannot sleep on planes, so long flights are hell. Here is how I do by best to cope with it.

Firstly, make sure you are comfortable, don't wear too tight clothing, wear layers in case it gets too hot or cold. I also bring slippers and change into those on the flight. (Mainly because I'm usually wearing my largest hiking shoes to save on space in my bag.) Also if you can put as much as you can in the overhead, don't waste your precious foot area space with another carryon that you don't need for the next 11 hours.

I also usually have either a travel blanket or sarong with me to use as a blanket. I then have a "DogBone" style travel pillow, which I find is better than the half intertube type travel pillows. I then have an eye mask that blocks out light, even though I cannot sleep it helps to make you feel like you are in a different place. I also have a bunch of ear plugs as I tend to easily loose them.


Then you need to have your distractions. I make sure to have movies/tv already downloaded to my phone or tablet. Same with ebooks and music. I also travel with multiple USB power packs to rejuice my devices. And then I carry a sudoku book, and extra paper (to write travel memories or doodle.)

I also make sure to have at least 2-3 full water bottles, as you want to keep hydrated. Avoid salty foods as well as those with too much sugar. But I also make sure to have snacks on hand. The name of the game is preparedness.


I don't have any experience with OTC drugs to sleep, as again I cannot sleep on planes. I would suggest trying whatever you have out prior to taking the flight, as you might have strange reactions. Nothing like trying to take something, and instead be bolt awake and not feeling well. I do have prescribed sleep medication, but its weird, if you don't fall asleep within 20-30 minutes of taking it, it has the opposite reaction and you'll heart will start racing. So I don't take it on flights.

Make sure to stretch and change up your seat position. I like to rest my eyes by putting the pill in front of me and essentially face plant the seat in front.

Make sure to get up every once in a while (mine is every 3-4 hours) and go to the bathroom, or just walk and down the aisle, etc. Stretch as you go. Note that some flight attendants won't like or won't let you just hang out at the back of the plane. (Usually because of safety issues.) Even if the flight attendant is being rude to you, make sure to be nice and smile. It will help later, as you can usually go to the back and request some water to keep hydrated. Also make sure not to get up during drink/meal service.


And good luck. I can handle 9 hour flights no problem, but longer than that its awful.

  • I highly recommend getting an Eye Mask, and taking some time to close your eyes, put on the mask and dive deep inside yourself. Music is optional, it can be good, but it's not necessary. Most people really obsess over the Open Eye Hallucinations, but it's when you close your eyes, relax and dive inside yourself, that the true learning takes place.
  • I heard a quote recently that says, "That which you reject, persists." The idea being, not to try and resist or run away from anything. If the experience is taking you down a path of thoughts you normally don't like to think about, don't avoid it, it will make it worse. Instead, embrace it. Give those thoughts a hug, and see what you can learn from going down that path.
  • I would prioritize your day so that you don't have any demanding obligations. I would recommend turning your phone on airplane mode and turn off all notifications. Unplug as much as you're able.
  • There may be times during your experience where you are caught in a "Negative Thought Loop". In these situations, try changing your surroundings. Get up and move, change the music, do something different, and your thoughts and experience will change as well.
  • Other's have mentioned this, and I want to echo the importance of taking notes. Sometimes writing is difficult in that state of mind, so I've found it helpful to use my phones Audio Memo app, where I can record myself speaking. It makes it easier.
  • I don't want to advocate taking more than your comfortable with, but if your mind and environment are in a good place, I'm in favor of people taking larger doses than smaller. I agree with /u/choose_the_rice, that 3g is probably the maximum amount you should consider taking for your first time.

A few of my suggestions have been said but I will go through my routine-
During work, I take a Vitamin B Complex about halfway through my shift (I decided that’s the time it worked best for me- doing 12’s wears on my mental capacity).
Sunglasses on the way home, make no stops on your way home unless you NEED something.
Get home, strip, take a melatonin, shower, my routine is to fill the bath tub with an inch or two of hot water and and a few drops of lavender oil, sometimes epsom salt (depending on the night of course), immediately brush my teeth and lay down ASAP. I used to have blackout curtains but it was almost too much- we have a dark tan sheet doubled over the window. It lets in some light so on the days it bothers me, I use an eye mask .
I enjoy white noise, I have an app for it on my phone, but I also keep earplugs nearby.

If you didn’t notice, I really like essential oils so I also have a diffuser going with something calming.

Jut try to shut your eyes ASAP. Don’t underestimate melatonin, it is your friend. Benadryl makes me feel groggy the next day.

So sorry for the novel, but I have my routine down to a science. 😂

Edit: during the winter I use my heated blanket to help warm up and drift off to sleep. 💤

Well I balance it out with being active. I work out before work. I don't go home and get on the computer after work. Nothing says I can't go out for walks in the woods or go rock climbing or camping on the weekends. In the winter you can't really do all that except on weekends cause it gets dark soon after work but there's all sorts of indoor stuff. Like indoor soccer, swimming, indoor rock climbing, board games. Plus fire pits are awesome in the winter. Also, more and more jobs in tech are allowing remote work which means you could be anywhere in the world. I do like an office though as a regular place to go to greet friends and employees and give/receive help. Some tech offices are really nice and I have looked forward to going there in the mornings. I'm going to second the eye mask -- You know how "weighted blankets" are pretty popular right now (I have one and LOVE it), well you can get weighted eye masks. I travel a lot and this thing is a game changer for me. It completely blocks out light (because it's filled with glass beads it contours to your face so no light seeping in), it's super cooling and comfortable. It also reduces puffy eyes from jet lag, etc. You can get them on Amazon, this is the one I have and I use it every night even though I don't have a light problem like you. It may be a good solution for you if you cannot get the lights changed.

I work nightshifts and have developed my own routine. First: I take a shower. Doesn't have to be a fast one and you don't have to wet your hair. I can't remember the science behind why this works, but it really does.

Then I make some tea with valerian root. Chamomile and lavender are lovely and sweet at calming you down, like a mom tucking you into bed. Valerian root is more like getting hit with a sleep bat, hard. Also, because it's an herbal tea, you want it to steep for longer. 10-15min about. I let it steep while I shower. It might smell weird, but it doesn't taste weird.

I live next to a train, so I have to wear earbuds and play straight white noise drone. I also put on a *good* eyemask (look for one that doesn't fall off and does not let eye in from under the mask... I use this thing from amazon). I use it all the time now; the sun sucks and wakes me up. Then, to complete my look, I throw on a snug hat so nothing falls off my dang face and for just a little extra 'fuck off, train' cushion over my ears. Sometimes, if even that isn't putting me out, I play some asmr from youtube. This weirdo has been conking me out as of late.

The biggest piece of advice I have though... is to avoid anything interesting or engaging.

And seriously, screw the sun. Make sure your phone/computer/ect switches from blue light to orange light around bedtime. The blue light is too much like the sun and the sun sucks.

TL;DR Cheap HDM lippage solution
If anyone has been in Rec Room Dodgeball or tried Out of Ammo, HDM slippage can be a problem especially if you are using a modded face cushion, i.e. sleep mask. Two solutions, one is tear apart an old bicycle helmet and use the rear strap for an adjustable fit. While this worked well for me, when I demoed I would run into a person now and then that wasn't comfortable with it. I needed a softer more elegant solution. Holy shit, it was right under our noses. I kept the straps I had cut off of this mask ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0142TUPE0 ) slipped it through the buckles on the Vive and viola, a beautiful, comfortable, adjustable, and CHEAP solution. I can attest it works well and I will trim and fine tune the ends on the buckle side to have a more elegant and fixed attachement. Hope this has some value to the community that has given me an incredible amount of value.

You can try a sleeping mask, it is a lot cheaper than curtains and works probably better, it is less comfortable, but not very uncomfortable in my opinion. If you buy a sleeping maks, make sure you get a 3d model, and not a flat one, so there is room for your eyes and your eyelids don't touch the fabric, these will be much more comfortable. When I had my first aura I freaked out too- esp since my family has a history of eye issues and brain tumors. (this was after I had migraines for awhile too) In a panic I called my doc who said I should call my neuro, and he said they are pretty normal. I still went to the eye doctor just in case the next week as I kept having them, but it seems they are linked to my chronic migraines.

For me, I take a break from being on the computer/reading/watching tv and relax. If I'm having a full on migraine, I lay down and close my eyes, and I have an eye pillow that you put in the freezer that I put over my eyes, and try to take a nap if possible. If I just have the aura (which does happen) I know that I either have a migraine coming or just need to get somewhere dark, so I just try to relax somewhere not as bright.

Also, sunglasses with the UV filter seem to help me when I go outside, since for me I get the auras mostly with bright light or eye strain. Hope that helps!

Well first off build yourself a top of the line pc with the new i7-7700k and GTX 1080 (or if money really isn't an issue get a GTX Titan XP and upgrade it to the 1080 Ti when it comes out lol).


Then make sure you have enough room. I only have 1.7 x 2.2m and it works great, but you can get up to 3x3m and over if you have the space.


The cord isn't too bad in most games, you will learn to just step over it. Certain games like Holopoint and Racket NX will have you spinning and getting tangled, but you can download a program called Advanced OpenVR Settings that will tell you how many spins you made in a certain direction so you can spin the other way ingame.


You will have a lot of add-ons to buy in a few months - Wireless (TPCast) , Hi5 Gloves , deluxe audio strap for added comfort , VR15 Rifle Accessory


And I 100% suggest that you buy a few of these sleep masks, cut out the middle, and use them as faceplate cushions instead of the default one, they are way more comfortable.


And get a box of these to wipe your lenses :P

High quality ear plugs. My fiance and I are both nurses, I can sleep fine with my bulk box of foam ear plugs from Walmart but she likes higher quality softer ones. I've tried them. They are better, but mine work fine.

Side note, for her birthday I paid for custom plugs made at an audiologist. They were more comfortable but don't block enough sound for her to use. So that was $80 well spent.

Maybe a bottle of melatonin? Or just more whiskey.

On the darkened room: I love my eyemask; I have trouble sleeping with ambient lighting, but living fairly far north in the summers you get about four hours of "night", plus my wife has a nightlight for when we get up to let the dogs out. Try a cheap one like this with the molded eye bumps so it won't tickle your eyelashes. Or, get a super fuzzy one for giggles. :)

You can buy basically anything on Amazon and it will come in a plain brown cardboard box. Under-the-mattress restraint systems work well and you can tuck them away when not in use. If buying things online isn't possible, you can get rope at the hardware store. If you do get into rope bondage, make sure to read extensively on safety. And someone who is tied up should not be left alone.

For a blindfold, I really like this silk sleep mask. It's very soft and it covers well without putting pressure on your nose bridge.

I love the wax ear plugs you can get at Walgreens because they're more comfortable to wear daily unlike mack's. I'm a light sleeper living in an active home near a bus line, who shares a room with someone that wakes up at 4. I also use a sound machine which at home uses USB but I can take camping bc it has batteries. It's literally pitch black under there, which was especially helpful when I shared a dual bunkbed room with ppl who would leave lights on at 3am. Finally, getting some exercise during the day by biking, avoiding caffeine, and making sure you're not overly hot while sleeping are all important. And if you need to take a shot of alcohol, melatonin, or a Benadryl. Alcohol does fuck with the rem cycle tho, so sleep will be less beneficial.

I suffer from migraines and lately they have been horrible. Due to some health issues I have been having to take medications that side effects are migraines. I just spent the whole day in bed due to one bad one. I have two items that I badly need but any item would be greatly appreciated.

My currently eye mask is falling apart and can't even wear it this eyemask would be wonderful. It keeps out the dark, which is very important since when I has a migraine I get light sensitive.

The other item is an icepack. Cold really seems to help with the pain. I have only one icepack that slightly works. It only stays cold for a few minutes than takes like 6 hours to freeze. This icepack has lots of good reviews.

Here's some nice stuff to have, but it's not needed:

  • Something to make boiling water that has an auto-shutoff, either a kettle or coffee maker.
  • Laundry detergent. It's expensive stuff, but you don't need much. Try sharing!
  • A "doorstop." I heard something about using a fork...
  • Food. Anything from home is always welcome, and if you don't have a car, much cheaper.
  • A box of 200 earplugs. Kind of optional, but I'm a light sleeper.
  • Something to block out the light at night.
  • Winter clothes, sooner than you think.
  • Headphones.
  • A fan is very important for non-ACd dorms, for those killer first two and last two weeks of the year.

    Only one of these per room. Having two or more is a waste of space:

  • Fridge.
  • Television. You don't need this though. (use a computer monitor if you're a serious gamer)
  • Anything that large/expensive. Pack lighter than you think.

    Stuff I didn't need:

  • Printer. With careful planning printing is free in the NRH computer lab, and many departments have a deal for printing. If you tend to forget until the last second, a printer can be a life-saver.
  • Silverware/bowls. Take-out is king and most microwavable stuff comes in bowls. If you're going to make stuff for yourself in the microwave one bowl is helpful. However, just get some disposable forks from on-campus dining.

I since discovered I could turn sleep paralysis into lucid dreaming, so I no longer use a sleep mask, but it definitely did help.

Okay, how do I sleep?

  1. Extra pillow to snuggle

  2. Really fancy sleep mask

  3. White noise machine

  4. Cat sleeping on my feet.

    I sleep best on my back but sometimes I curl up into a fetal position. I need to have at least one foot outside the blanket.

    I have no new neopets happenings, because blechhhh the site is so slow. My animal crossing flowers are creating hybrids like whoa, though. It's been sort of nice, I listen to audiobooks (finished The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith, just started Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay) and fish, water plants, harvest fruits and talk to the animals.

    I spent the entire weekend going through my closets, donating stuff, and taking my kitty to the vet (he still hasn't forgiven me). I've been trying to get more moving boxes, so I'll stop by the liquor store tonight to see if they have any extras. I don't think I've even packed 1/5 of my books yet. Blech, moving!

Instead of blocking the noise, you may want to try covering it up. This is usually much easier. I know a guy who used a Brown Noise Generator in the dorms. You can buy a dedicated one, or just get something like this. A more low tech solution would be to put something noisy like a fan on for background noise. If that's not enough, you could also supplement it with a sound dampening sleep mask. This is a highly regarded one.

Edit: In case you are wondering, brown noise is a low pitched hum that is supposed to make good background noise. Here is an example

I tried the face mask mod and it worked alright. The problem was that after wearing it for about 45 minutes to an hour my face had this horrible black mark from where the mask made contact. It was like it stained my face and I had to scrub it with every cleansing agent I could find. The shit just wouldn't come off. I ended up scrubbing my face raw.

I thought maybe I just needed to clean the face mask material real good, but it didn't help. After the second time I gave up and tossed it. I'm assuming it was the dye in the material coming off my on face from the pressure and sweat. This is the one I bought after seeing it recommended.

I ended up going with this stuff instead and it's worked great. It's basically the same as what u/gamermusclevideos is recommending.

And good eye mask for when they need to nap during the day. I found a slightly weighted one works good and stays in place. I like this one as it has little plastic pellets in it to conform to your face, really blocks out light good, yet still is cool and lets air flow.

I wrap a t shirt around my head in a pinch but feel like the mask works much better. It completely blocks the light for me and the tightness is adjustable. I've tried a lot of eye masks. There is the sleep like normal and add a afternoon nap method, or the stay up all night and sleep all day method. I prefer the first.

You basically just sleep on the days between shifts. When you want to go back to days you sleep until the afternoon after a night shift, then wake up for the rest of the day and go to bed at your normal night hour.

A while back I ordered six different sleep masks to try out. I'm a side and sometimes stomach sleeper and most of them just don't work for that. Settled on this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S5Q826U/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The reasons I like it - it's thin for side-sleeping. It's large and fits well to block light coming in from edges. It blocks most direct light unless you're out in direct sunlight - then a little gets through.

The others I tried were: the tempurpedic, nidra, two different dream essentials, and bedtime bliss. The free ones from airlines are junk. They don't block much light, don't fit, and break after a couple of uses.

Funny you should ask. Like other commenters I recently purchased a sleep mask to block out morning sunlight. For that purpose it has changed my life - no more waking up at sunrise. But it is well suited for bedroom play as well. It is super comfy, not bulky, has pads around the eyes so no pressure on the eyes, blocks all light, and stays in place.

Another benefit I got from this was absolutely NO LIGHT LEAK around my nose! I have a narrow nose, and it wasn't bad before, and I could only see it if the room was bright, so it's nice not to have to turn out the lights for full immersion.

Increased sweet spot and FOV are the main winners of course.

I’ve worked midnights for a decade. Charles Dickens is my last resort. When I put that on, I have Great Expectations that I’ll be asleep soon. It was free on audible a little while ago but you can get potato quality recordings on livrvox for free.

Here’s my sleep aide list I give to new employees on the shift.
Not that you asked.

Melatonin. Try different brands. I like strawberry chewy one. I found one brand that just doesn’t work for me and another brand that lead to chronic nightmares. Switch it up if the first kind doesn’t do it for you.

Get a sleep mask (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003CGJRNK/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I like this one. The large eye cavity and lip at the bottom are essential. The lip keeps out the light. The large space in the eye balls keeps the headaches away.

Get soft ear plugs (LaserLite, they’re pink and yellow). Don’t use the hard foam cheap bullshit. Fuck that noise. They don’t even stay in your ears. The pink and yellow are like, the soft caress of a spring breeze in a field with gentle rolling hills as you notice a fawn nibbling on grass at the edge of a mysterious wood.

Download the ambiance app. There’s a couple thousand sounds and you can customize your loop so you can do like, thunderstorm and waves crash plus a heart beat if that’s your sleepy time jam.

Experiment with sounds. For a 4 month period 3 years ago, i discovered a loop of a group of Spanish people conversing in a room that put me out. Some of the sounds on the app are fucking wild. Fire fight in Iraq? Check. Old man weeping? Check. Prison fight? Check. Ford assembly plant? Check. They have normal sounds too but I’m saying you’d be surprised what will help you sleep. If your an insomniac you’re at the edge of your rope anyway so just try something that may seem counterintuitive.

Take a bath. Really step up your bath game with lavender bath salts and candles. Am I a middle age lady treating myself or a manic depressive shift worker trying to catch some z’s? Why not both?

Google sleep aide tea. I like the chamomile but you do you.

Get a heating pad and place it on your stomach or neck. I don’t know, it’s soothing.

In terms of diet, I don’t drink caffeine or sugary soda 3-5 hours before bed. Alcohol tends to interrupt my sleep so it’ll initially put me out but I’ll wake up earlier and won’t feel as rested. So I don’t really drink much during the week anymore. So consider what you’re putting in your body that could be effecting your sleep.

The guy who narrates forensic files makes me super sleepy but my brother thinks that’s creepy. I don’t know why a murder show makes me tired. I don’t ask questions, I just appreciate the sleep.

From what I've heard, even if you do get them they are very uncomfortable to wear. Lot of people said theirs went straight in the trash so it might be $27 down the drain anyways. Could try to cancel via email I guess and hope they refund you.

EDIT: If you're looking for a cheaper alternative option to get your eyes closer to the lenses, a sleep mask might be a decent option. Just have to cut the eye holes out, they stick to the headset pretty well on their own. Here's a few options, I've tried all 3 and the first one listed was my favorite but note that it's pretty similar in width as the standard foam ones that come shipped with the headset, but it's a decent option if you need a replacement until official accessories are up for sale. Cut that into roughly the shape of the standard wide face mask (big C shape) and it will fit the Vive perfectly and also stick to the velcro, took me 2 minutes to do. Once you have it on, move the bottom ends of the sleep mask that rest on your cheek bones lower and out of the way of the bottom of the Vive lenses, it makes a significant difference as well. Also try to have the face mask pad lining on the outside edge of the velcro strip around the face seal of the Vive, leaving plenty of room around the lenses for your face to fit in and for your eyes to get close to the lenses. It makes for a very immersive FOV, closest to DK1 I have gotten in a long time.

Well, shoulder pain is the worst for bed time. I know I have RA. So understand how you feel.

A few things to consider.

  1. 500mg of phenubit 1-2 hrs before bed.

  2. Also I suggest a Tempur-Pedic pillow if you will be laying on your back it was a life saver for me when I had to do the same.

  3. 3d sleep masks with super soft ear plugs that come with them. See link below for details.

I was never able to sleep on long flights until I got one of these contoured sleeping masks. It'll look like you're wearing a tiny bra on your face, but they do an amazing job of blocking out the light. My advice: try putting this on around what would be bedtime in the new time zone and keep it on for as long as you can stand it, whether you end up falling asleep or not. Exposing yourself to light during "daylight hours" in the new time zone and keeping things dark during "nighttime hours" will do a world of good.

these look like just a thin sheet of foam cut to the template. Materials wise probably cost no more than $0.50. Just go to your local arts and crafts store and by a foam sheet and cut it yourself. This sucks, a few notes that may be useful to you and other users:

  1. You can sometimes work out how many rooms a host has by clicking on their host profile and seeing all the properties they list. Then you can usually figure it out from maps and pictures. You can sometimes also figure out if those rooms will be occupied or not.

  2. I recently bought a wrap around sleep mask with, get this, a speaker in it that connects to my iPhone via blue tooth. Then I can use it to play whitenoise. Cost me $10 (ordered online from a local ecom platform). Here's an example of a similar one: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Eye-Headphones-Joseche-Microphone/dp/B07F59HQRC. Then you can play whitenoise and hopefully that can help. Not ideal, but better than nothing.

  3. Check with hosts by sending a private message ahead of time.

    In terms of fixing this current situation the best you can do is to talk to the host and the other guests. There's nothing foolproof though. If you can afford it then it may be worth cutting your losses and staying elsewhere (sunk cost fallacy) but I understand that for a lot of folks that's just financially not possible.

I put together a belt clip from a sleeping mask box and a metal coat hanger.

I used the box from this sleeping mask:

I'm sure you can make a holder out of any cardboard box by cutting it into shape. That box was the perfect size so I used it. Cereal box would probably be a good material to cut down to size.

I bent a piece of a metal coat hanger and glued it to the box. This stops the wires from pulling down on my head.

Do you use a sleep mask? I've had a lot of issues with insomnia (generally better now, but still a recurring thing-- on Friday I woke up at 3am and didn't fall back asleep). My mom does, too, and she bought me (and herself) several of these. I like that there's room so that you can open your eyes and it's still dark.

I got some hot/cold gel-bead packs for my first aid kit and found they make something similar just for the eyes. Another thing is just to stay hydrated, which a lot of people tend to forget about in the winter. Winters where I'm from are cold and super DRY, so hydration is very important.

I cannot sleep without this mask if it's at all light in the room - I've ordered like 5+ over the years for myself (replacing lost ones, lol) and various family members. I much prefer it to the foam mask type that you linked - I find that the nose guard thingy really helps with light. I used to use that type of mask - I would pick them up at TJ Maxx or wherever - but after having this one for the past few years I can't go back. Plus it comes with ear plugs and a little carrying case! I don't use the ear plugs much at all, but I got one of these for a friend and she swore by the ear plugs in college.

The one thing is, it's machine washable (delicate) but not dryable - it still works if you put it in the dryer, but it starts peeling/separating. Still usable, but kind of annoying. It's definitely not cooling tho :/

First, find yourself a Safe Parking location and get in there if you can.

Long Beach's pilot Safe Parking program starts in September.

If you're not in a Safe Parking location, you'll want to block out your windows at night. Whether or not you're in a Safe Parking location, you also might want to get a good sleep mask and some earplugs.

If you're in neighborhoods, vary your parking spot as much as you can (choose different streets or different neighborhoods for the night if possible), and be a good neighbor -- no noise, no trash, no sitting in your vehicle with the music on even if the windows are up, no pacing up and down in front of houses talking on your phone at night, no peeing on trees or pooping in bushes, no sneaking up to houses to turn on their hose to get water, no chain-smoking outside someone's home, no drugs. All these things make it more likely that someone will ask the cops to ask you to move on.

A YMCA membership for showering and a bathroom is a great idea, especially if you need to get out of the heat and just sit somewhere air conditioned and read or charge your electronics. Some have wifi and TVs too. However, joining something like 24-hour Fitness means you have 24/7 access to showers and restrooms, although they might be less chill about people hanging out charging your electronics or reading or something.

Eggshell foam is going to get unbearably hot to sleep on and isn't going to provide you much support -- you're going to be aching in the morning after a night or two. If you have any spare cash, you can get an okay mattress at IKEA for $60.

Public libraries are also good for getting into air conditioning and charging your devices, plus you get to read whatever you want and stuff.

These are very useful for someone who needs to sleep during the day. They're also good for keeping the heat in/out of your apartment which can help on heating bills. If you get them, make sure to choose the right size and style.

A cheaper option would be a sleep mask set, but that doesn't seem to fit in the 'for my apartment' theme and some people aren't comfortable with them.

I had a brief period of weird anxious physical/mental symptoms due to a medication, and what helped me sleep was getting a little vibrating thing to keep on my bed to distract my body, and leaving the radio low enough that I could tell it was voices without understanding the words to distract my mind. Without those things I was being jolted awake by extreme nausea every time I got anywhere near sleep.

The vibrating thing was a neck rest that had built-in vibration and heat that I got from the thrift store, but anything that can vibrate gently and plugs in so it will last all night should do.

I use a sleeping blindfold which might not necessarily be 100% effective, it gets the job done. For sound, I use earplugs AND shooting earmuffs together. Again, it's not 100% effective, but it does the job well enough to mask my movements and even completely silence my rattling wartenberg wheels.

The trick to getting used to it was to not try to fall asleep with it on at night (impossible, right?), but to keep it nearby and go to bed with the curtains open. Around 5am when the sun filled the room, I would reach for the mask and the slight discomfort had no chance at keeping me from going back to sleep. A few weeks of this and my body associated the feeling of the mask with blissful sleep.

Not a doctor but I am someone who gets frequent migraines. My doctor strongly suggested I get my eyesight tested as I may be inadvertently squinting a lot and causing eye strain. He also checked my blood pressure.

I have a sleep disorder and am sensitive to light. The way my bedroom is set up puts me under a skylight as well. (Great at night for stars, terrible past dawn. haha.)

This is the eyemask I have. It is comfortable and molds to my face, but it is thick as hell and no light gets through. You can't change the inconsiderate roomie, but at least something like that might help. :)

Do what you can to control lighting and temperature in your bedroom.

  1. Get cheap blackout curtains or something to reduce room light. What I bought to help: http://amzn.com/B000SDTEAG Also, I have used this sleep mask: http://amzn.com/B0015NZ6FK. I bought a cheaper one once, but it wasn't big enough and hurt my ears.

  2. Keep your bedroom cool if possible.

  3. Avoid computer, TV & cell phone screens (my personal reoccurring issue)

  4. Don't abuse melatonin & when you use it, make sure you're in a dark room with the steps from above.

  5. If you run out of those options, Tylenol PM (Diphenhydramine HCl) is safe in the short term.

  6. Stop caffeine intake by your lunch time (which I would guess is around 6PM).

    (I've worked night shift for nearly 8 years. It's taken me a long time to figure it all out. I feel your pain.)

why? a few reasons. thinner sleep masks allow for a slightly higher FOV due to the lenses being closer to your eyes. However I found it a bit uncomfortable on my nose so I use the slightly thicker 'memory foam' one

another reason is I now have several face 'foams' so I can swap them out / wash them as needed when sharing the vive or when its sweaty

final reason is comfort - I find the standard foam gets scratchy/uncomfortable on my face while I don't seem to have that problem with the memory foam sleep mask. different material, overly-sensitive skin, etc.

I work 2am - 10 or 11ish and the biggest thing that has helped me sleep is a silk sleep mask. Blackout shades were never black enough but the mask has changed my life; the quality of sleep has been so much better.
