The upfront cost isn't too terrible, you'll need skates (obviously), but don't need the pricey ones when you're just starting out. Trust me, you won't know the difference until you're pretty well into it, and even then some people don't upgrade. I'd suggest Riedell R3's to start. Several websites have a "derby starter package", but unless you want to have your knees perpetually shredded, I would suggest throwing down the cash for good knee pads. 187's are awesome. I highly recommend Sin City Skates for all your derby needs. It's entirely owned and staffed by skaters who will give you great advice about gear, wheels, helmets, teams, etc.

I saw that you mentioned derby insurance in a comment above. I WOULD NOT suggest skating without "real" insurance as well. The derby insurance is basically just a legal requirement so that venues can't be held liable for skater injuries. The deductible is absurdly high and they still won't cover everything.

I'm 21 and a little bit of a weirdo, plus I weigh, WAY too much for my height. I blame my loneliness on my weight. I'm really outgoing and friendly, so I don't blame my inability to get dates on my personality.
When I was a kid, I LOVED to roller skate. That's how I kept my shape. A few months ago, I went with a friend to the local roller rink, I still have my groove. If I had these roller skates I know I could drop the weight. I would literally roller skate EVERYWHERE. My friends are lazy, the only motivation I have is myself. For my height, to be completely healthy, I need to lose about 80 pounds, it's all about finding active that you enjoy doing!

I got my Reidell Darts for under $100 (I think they were $85) because I wanted recreational quad skates, and they were the minimum if I later decided to join roller derby. They served me very well skating outdoors with outdoor wheels, and my stock wheels got me through roller derby fresh meat when I decided to join about a year later. I'm looking into better skates for derby now, but still love my Darts and they'll become my outdoor skates.

EDIT: These are my skates. Looks like the price went up a bit. Pay a lot of attention to sizing if you order skates--you will need a smaller size than you think.

Look for some cheap Reidell skates on amazon. You can usu find some R3's for around $100.
The pads that came with the set you shared are probably not protective enough esp for a beginner. Cheap pads have a shell to protect from scrapes but no padding (in knee and elbow pads) for impact protection. Here's some suggestions:
Search for "triple 8" or "TSG" knee, elbow or wrist pads. They sometimes come in packages but be careful, you might have a large wrist but medium knee so buying all mediums wouldn't work out.
