I know how you feel. Mother's day recently passed and it was rough on me. I lost my mother at age 12. If you ever need somebody to vent to or just relate to, I'm here. We don't know each other but that's okay with me. We still share something very intimate.


I won't tell you that I won't have money to get him ANYTHING. I will do whatever I can do whether that be make him a card or build something by hand. He will not go without during this holiday. However, gifts are always nice and I'm sure he'd love it! My entire life, my father has been dedicated to Nascar. Ever since I can remember, we've been going to races together. As a kid, the only thing I was ever interested in was the noises and whatever driver my father (or mother while she was alive) was rooting for. As I've grown older, I learned to appreciate Nascar for what it is. I know it's an unpopular opinion and most people can't stand it but please understand that races are what he lives for and it's a way for him to bond with whoever he brings and genuinely enjoy his life, something he feels like he doesn't get to do often.


Anyway, my father got me into it, of course. Jimmy Johnson is my guy, Jeff Gordon was his, Dale Earnhardt was my mother's. When I started working at the same company as he does (FedEx), they offered Nascar tickets to the Dover, DE race (which was 3 days ago) for $11 and he bought me a ticket. We went and we had the time of our lives, throwing every care and worry out of the window even if just for a day. Being able to see my father in that state is what makes me happy. In turn, I'd like to be able to get him a gift that relates in some way to Nascar. Not the cheap cars you can get at Walmart that he already has 1000 of but something with some meaning. Maybe something he can look at and it just takes him down memory lane, spreading a huge grin across his face every time he looks at it.


If you're a fan of Nascar, you'd know that Jeff Gordon has retired (though he is now announcing for Nascar). As I mentioned, that's his favorite driver. I found the perfect gift he'd definitely cherish for the rest of his life!

This Bruins banner is for my BFF Becky. She loves the Bruins more than anything. Hockey is her obsession. I put it on my list to remind myself to get it for her at some point. It would make her happy.

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it!
The Name of the Wind. Of everything I've read in the past 6 months, this one I devoured and have been desperate for the second book in (it's on my list to pick up this week, actually, if my paycheck EVER comes in).

Look, I hate... HATE... first person perspective. I see it as a sign of sloppy writing. However, this book had me SOLD on it. Kvothe is possibly one of my new favorite characters OF ALL TIME.

Avid reader doesn't even begin to describe me. I have my own library. I need books like air. And if I had to make a list of 100 books that were all I was allowed to have for the rest of my life, THIS WOULD BE ON IT.

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related!

The Breakfast Club Why? Because. It's a good movie. Whether you were the jock, the brain, the spoiled brat, the loser, or the troublemaker-- there's a character you can identify with, and it shows that whatever and whoever you are, you can get along with someone who isn't in your clique.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain.
A Seed Vault

Everyone worries about fighting zombies.

Dumb. You see, when the zombies come, I'm holing up. A few weeks and if they are undead, they'll have rotted themselves to death. If they are fast moving, viral sumbitches, then they'll have likely ended up offing themselves through dehydration or whatever.

In any event, I'll wait them out. But then, I will need to rebuilt and eat.

(Besides, I have my trusty zombie-killing baseball bat, and a bow. Quiet. Efficient.)

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals.
This book on Aztec and Inca expansionism. I'm back in school, and my focus is Mesoamerican Studies. Eventual degrees, here I come!

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why?
A KitchenAid Mixer Why? I like to cook and bake. My mother has one that I used for years when I was a kid and still living with her. I'm 30 now. I remember she got it when I was like, 5. IT STILL WORKS. Over a dozen moves, being abused for holidays making bread and cookies and cakes, being used by my Dad (I swear, he looks at appliances and they break) and it STILL FUNCTIONS PERFECTLY.

I cannot think of a kitchen appliance that would be more useful.

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. EDIT A bread box is typically similar in size to a microwave.

I'm not sure about posters, but as soon as I moved I was really lucky to get this from my hockey secret Santa. There's also this. My roommate has a Carolina Panthers version of that and it looks really nice.

That's just it though, a company pays a large amount of money to license the VT logo, so they have to make it up somewhere. Additionally frames aren't cheap, and even places like amazon are 100-150 ish (try VT Frame But if you want something without the VT logo, try Michaels or a framing store not near the university. Otherwise, take your original, order a couple extra copies (25-50 bucks each or so) and thumb tack it to the wall. When one fades/wears out, put next one up. Every 5-7 years you'll have a fresh diploma on the wall and still come out ahead (please don't do this).

My grandson is due Dec 20 and this ornament would be perfect for him!
