It can be hard to give shoes as a gift: sizing can be all over the place, and you don't want to spend $150+ on a present that he can't use. Furthermore, shoes can be very pricey, with most of the best options starting way above $200 retail. Aftermarket sales can be great, but that chalks a lot up to luck on such short notice. Same thing with blazers, really; sizing can change drastically between brands, and to make matters worse, they're typically even more expensive than shoes. You can find some great sales, of course, but that requires a lot of time -- something you don't have a lot of right now.

So, I have a new proposal: how about a nice watch? Watches can be pretty expensive, too, but they don't have to be. There's lots of nice options below $200 -- here's a few possibilities:

Orient 'Ray' | $172

Rodina 'Automatic' | $119

Orient 'Bambino' | $139

There's a ton of other available options; I didn't even scratch the surface. You could also pick up a couple straps, too, if you have a bit of extra cash left over -- Crown & Buckle and CheapestNatoStraps are some good places to look. Bear in mind that Sofie - the owner of CNS - is based in Sweden, so they might take a while to arrive. Mine took about 3 weeks, but I'm satisfied with the purchase. With a time constraint, though, C&B would probably be the better choice.

If he already has a nice watch, you could look into buying him some shaving supplies: it can be a thoughtful gift, and the start of a new hobby that both of you can share. Look around /r/wicked_edge and see what you think! I could help you put together a starter kit if this is the route you end up choosing. :)

If he wears suits on a regular basis, you could look into getting him a few ties, too. Ties are a relatively personal gift, though; he might not necessarily like the ones you pick out. Still, you can't go wrong with some Chipp Grenadines!

Finally, if you're looking for one last small gift, he might like a nice comb. If he's been using a cheap plastic one, he'll notice the difference right away!

If you need any more help, just ask. :)

MVMT watches are well known for being low quality "fashion" watches. These fashion brands are usually aimed at a younger audience so it makes sense they advertise on podcasts. In my eyes they aren't even worth the ~$100 price point. Sure they'll last a while, but so has my 10 year old Timex I got for 20 bucks, or some dollar store one I got as a kid.

If you are actually looking for a quality ~$100 watch, look at Seiko, Citizen or Orient. /r/watches is a very good place to learn, and you might find, like countless other beginners, that the Seiko SNK-809 is for you (my first "good" watch was the SNK-807), which is $50-$70 and a real mechanical automatic ("perpetual" for those of you across the pond) movement. Anything from Seiko 5 range is an incredible starter automatic watch.

Do some research if an automatic movement vs quartz movement is right for you (quartz is the basic battery operated watch that the "guts" can be found in watches ranging from $500 Movados to dollar store watches). I REALLY like seeing how things work so I really appreciate the mechanics behind an automatic watch. The downside to them is that they aren't as accurate as quartz (a normal range of inaccuracy is like +-10 seconds a day). But you'll never have to change a battery if that is any consolation. If that puts you off, keep in mind that a $10,000 Rolex has an automatic movement good for +- 5 seconds per day. And as a final PSA, stay away from Invicta. Their automatic movements, cheap pricing, and flashy looks may look enticing, but quality control is horrendous. Just as with any potential purchase, do some research on a watch you think looks promising. Give the model name a search on google or /r/watches and try to find a consensus.

For those of you who have been thinking they want a watch but haven't started exploring styles (which is the demographic companies like MVMT pander to with their styles) here is the classic "diver" style watch with the Rolex Submariner. A cheaper automatic dive watch I've been wanting for a LONG time is the Seiko SKX007, which obviously pays homage to the Sub, but is about $5800 cheaper. I'd replace the bracelet with something better than what is there though. Maybe I'll get it after college...

Another well loved cheap diver is from Orient, the Mako, though I prefer its big brother, the Ray, even though that is even closer looking to the Submariner.

The absolute best in budget vs quality in a dive watch is the ~$40 Casio MDV-106. You can get a decent 22 mm steel bracelet for almost the price of the watch and it will look fantastic if that is your preference. I've borrowed my brother's a few times and the thing feels like quality and has been put to the test plenty of times to prove itself as a real dive watch. He goes swimming, hiking, plays sports with it, drops it on concrete, etc. Rugged yet elegant looking. Good size too. Highly recommended first diver or first watch!

If you are looking for a real dress watch with "minimalist design" that doesn't look tacky like MVMT's (sorry, just my opinion), there are plenty in the Seiko 5 line like I said, or the lovely Orient Bambino.

Came back to say that if you don't really know if you want a watch, don't think you need to spend $100 on your first. Who knows, you might not like how it feels or looks on you or whatever. For the absolute cheapest of cheap, get yourself a Timex or Casio quartz watch. These brands are well renowned for their reliability. This way you'll end up spending only $15-20 on a watch that will last and work forever (obviously with battery changes along the way).

I swear by leather chaps. I wear em even if it's 100F outside. The hot sun directly on the tops of my legs sucks, but the chaps provide an air-gap insulation layer.

I ride in that temp comfortably with not much problem, provided it's not a really long ride (without heated gear). I had expected to read that you'd bundled way up against the cold and still decided that was enough. Did you really just add chaps to your regular riding gear?

Here's what i wear other than normal "Clothes, jacket, gloves, and chaps"-

Good spandex thermals like Harley's "Ice Breakers" top and bottom. They're not the knit ones like the white long-johns, they're the kind you get at sporting goods stores for snow-boarders and skiers. Super thin, super comfy, and super warm.

Zipper hoodie- There's different weight hoodies. When I ride in cold temps, I grab my $100 super-heavy weight, thumb holes in the cuffs, "too heavy to wear indoors like ever" hoodie.

Glove liners made of silk or spandex- same stuff the thermals are made of. Makes all the difference until you're on the bike for more than 45 minutes. If I'm riding longer than that in real cold, I add another pair of glove liners. They're $12 a pair on Amazonhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IUH9UKG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

A fleece "turtle neck" sleeve that pulls down over my head to cover my face below the eyes, ears, and neck. They're usually 10-12" long and two layers of fleece. http://www.amazon.com/Chaos--CTR-Chinook-Fleece-Gaiter/dp/B002ZG7RCG/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1414855281&sr=1-5&keywords=fleece+neck+warmer

Knit watch cap- pulled down over my ears.

Once the sleeve is down over my face and the watch cap is down over my ears, I strap on the helmet. You can fold the sleeve down to expose your face if you get too warm while waiting at lights and to pull the bike out of the garage while the wife does whatever (happens a LOT when I dress like this, which means it's warm enough to ride :). If my face gets cold through the sleeve even, I tie a bandana over my face, old-west bandit style "This is a stick-up. Hand over the loot".

Glasses or goggles that cover the slit made between beanie and face sleeve. Glasses should be one-piece plastic frames that allow no air to pass between the lenses and the bridge of the nose. Wire frame glasses allow the eyes to dry out.

When finally dressed like this (but with leather chaps, jackets, and gloves and the rest of your normal street clothes) you sorta look like the guy in the middle- http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/31/article-2531409-1A59815500000578-260_634x456.jpg

Last Christmas I rode from Berkeley, CA to Rocklin, CA, 125 miles away in 40F weather going up in the late morning and 30F weather going back home late-nite. It wasn't until the last 20 minutes of the ride home that my hands and crotch got unpleasantly cold, but not so cold that it was painful.

Hope this helps.

Don't worry, it is a common question when dealing with analog chronos. What you have to know is that the actual seconds hand of the watch, the one that keeps track of time, never stops or resets and is not part of the chrono function in any way.

I was going to write a long explanation but you will quickly get the idea with a video. Some watches count seconds, minutes and fractions of a second (which is cool but not very useful), others count hours. There is a lot of variation so you will have to check specific models. Some go up to 30 minutes only yet others designed for specific sports count the length of a regular match, like some soccer or basketball chronos count up to 45 minutes.

Some models do not have a timekeeping seconds hand in order to keep things simple. Others can get very complicated (incidentally I thing the last one is one of the few chronos with a big central seconds hand used for timekeeping rather than the chrono function).

Now, a few things to consider if you plan on using the chrono a lot:

  • They are harder to read than digital chronos. I can easily read my digitals when biking or running without stopping, but reading a tiny hand in a small subdial is much harder when you are moving

  • The hands on the subdials will get misaligned. Most chronos offer a way to calibrate them

  • Digital chronos can go up to 99 hours

  • Some chronos use a subdial to display current time in a 24 hr format. Personally I have no use for that. Look closely at this model and see how it is indicating approx 10, which is the same time as the big hands. For contrast check this, looks like the same watch but the upper subdial indicates fractions of a second.

An analog chrono I like is the Csio AMW330, it features a solid steel case and counts up to 12 hours (see the left subdial). I think it looks fantastic with a white dial but there is also black and gold; you can get a metal bracelet if you prefer. Unfortunately it is bigger than you want, at 45 mm.

I own an AMW700 which is 38mm, made of steel and has many functions. It has a 24hr chrono, countdown time of several hours and moon phase, plus other fishing functions I don't use but don't get in the way. My only complaints are that the light is not very effective and the band has parts of vinyl that are not high quality, but otherwise it should last many years, mine is 5 years old. I'd say those are your best options at this price range.

Another one I own is very similar to this. It features a thermometer and dual 99 hr chronos but it's harder to use and see due to the inverted screen (white numbers on black background. On the other hand, it looks incredibly futuristic when you use the backlight.

A popular ana digi is the AQ-S810 which features solar power, but the chrono is 59 minutes only. There is a very similar model with a metal bracelet but the case is plastic and only the tiny screen is backlit.

Swatch offers analog chronos at this price, they are all plastic and in shiny colors, more like toys.

If you want my personal opinion, on your budget the best option is to go digita with a g shock like this. Solar power, syncs time with an atomic clock, 99 hour chrono, 24 hr countdown timer (if I am not mistaken), a good backlight, very though.

For my literally carry on my person at all times kit:

  • This keychain flashlight is one of the things I'll be getting for Christmas this year to replace my old junker. I put a bit of research time into this with the help of /r/flashlights and youtube video reviews. I think it's a solid pick.

  • I carry a Skeletool CX Multitool pretty much everywhere except airplanes. For day to day life it has all of the tools most people will need and weighs way less than a fully packed leatherman. I have uses for this at minimum monthly if not multiple times a week.

  • I also wear a paracord bracelet regularly. Honestly... on that one I've never really had a call to unwind and use it as rope, but I like it well enough and it's nice knowing that it's there if I need it. Given the recent apple keynote address where they announced that their new watch will have full cellular capabilities among the other things it can do I am half considering replacing this with a $400 wrist computer at some point, but that's a hefty investment.

  • Smart phone. A world of information at my fingertips.

  • Then there's the usual stuff like keys, work badge, headphones, wallet.

However, I also bring my backpack with me to and from work everyday, and if we're heading out adventuring for the day I'll chuck it in my trunk just to have it. I'm not sure I'll get everything here, but I'll toss in what I can remember off of the top of my head.

  • Kleenex, Ibuprofen, pepto tablets, band aids, cough drops
  • Pepper Spray and a boot knife
  • Fingerless leather gloves + a seasonal pair of full work gloves. The fingerless ones are the ones I use most often when I'm helping friends or family move heavy things. They have padded palms and protect my hands well. The seasonal work gloves are for in the event I need to engage in more messy hand work and the winter pair has served as backup for my cold weather gloves more than once when someone less prepared didn't have their own.
  • I got a shemagh once on a whim after watching a video on it. Tried it on, decided I looked ridiculous, but kept it as a small thin blanket in my backpack.
  • Come winter I always have my Balaclava (seriously, this one is awesome) for really cold weather and even a half piece for when it's cold enough for a scarf but I don't really need full head gear. I love both of these and refer to them as my full ninja vs my half ninja. My fiancee rolls her eyes.
  • A few kirkland brand 5 hour energy bottles (I don't like coffee)
  • Umbrella, lighter, backup phone charger, and headphones
  • Full size water-resistant flashlight

That stuff usually gets toted around with me just about everywhere, though not always directly on my person. Depending on the season or event I'll add or remove items as needed.

What watches does he have? What type of watch do you want - sport, dress, dive, aviator? Where is he going to wear it? How much can you spend?

This is a very cool thing you're doing - happy birthday to you and your brother.
I'm a bit of a watch nut and generally go for automatic watches, so that's what I'll stick to here....unfortunately none of them are as trendy as the larger Hugo you've mentioned. I'm not as familiar with the trendier stuff...but I can offer some input.
In that price range, I normally recommend Seiko. Their dive watches are pretty solid (http://amzn.to/1wX9UCd) and right in your range, but if you're looking for something a bit dressier the SARB line has some great pieces....although a bit higher than you mentioned - http://amzn.to/1tteaIk. The Seiko movement isn't as well known as the Swiss movements, but it's great all the same. For the money, they're hard to beat.
Going a bit cheaper, you can look at the Chinese made watches. Sea-Gull has some good looking ones. I've actually had one for a bit, but the quality wasn't the same and I ended up letting it go. The materials aren't as solid and the fit and finish isn't the same as Swiss or a Seiko. At the same time, you get a whole lot more shoved in the watch for quite at a much lower price point. For instance - a Chinese-made Sea-gull tourbillon starts at $4000ish, while a Swiss-made one will start at....$35000. That said - this is an attractive sea-gull: http://bit.ly/1wUHdab; and here is a dressier one: http://bit.ly/1yOyFks
Another option is to go vintage. You can get some cool watches at great prices - Omega, Jaeger Le-Coultre, Girard-Perregeaux. While I generally wouldn't recommend eBay due to the amount of fraud you'll find, here's a good looking Seamaster currently for sale - http://ebay.to/1zqa1tC. A more reliable source for used watches is http://www.watchrecon.com/. It's an aggregate of several watch fora and you can see what's currently for sale.
Best of luck in your search.

DW-5600E is the basic (but still great!) no frills square.
Tells the time, has alarms and stop watches, counts up and down, an auto backlight, and calendar to 2039. It's dive rated to 200 meters, and has an electronic luminescent backlight, much like indiglo if you have a Timex.

GWM-5610 is all of the above, along with world time, and has the two biggest features for some: solar charging and atomic radio syncing.
For many, this is the THE "square." It's robust, self sufficient, and has a classic look without looking too dated or too ultra modern. The display is slightly different than the 5600E.

GLX-5600 is most similar to the budget 5600E above but has an additional bit of display for tide and moon information. Still as tough, still as cool looking.

GLS-5600 is a more recent, stylish variant of the 5600E. It come in 4 neat colors (black, white, green, and sand) and features a moving seconds complication on the face. Also, it features a "Low Temp LCD," this LCD is rated to go to -20 C. Honestly as you're wearing it on your person, a normal 5600E can go pretty cold as it also has your body heat. Possibly most importantly for some people, this model comes standard with strap adapters and a really comfy clothes NATO strap standard.

GWM-5610-1BJF is the Japanese only, blacked out model of the radio/solar 5610. These can be imported pretty easily through Amazon, so of cost isn't an issue, don't let the import bother you. The Japanese models also usually feature slightly more supple, softer resin straps and a screwback case, like on a mechanical time piece.

While not exclusively a 5600, if you need a big honkin' watch, the GX-56 is basically a thick 5600. Huge buttons and case, has all of the features of a 5610 with a cool moving seconds graphic like the GLS.

Many of these can be found in various colors and feature variants, so as a recap/guide:

5600 - standard square G Shock

5610 - radio/solar square model

GLX - surfing/tide model

GLS - stylish colors, comes with NATO strap

GX-56 - huge "King" G Shock

BB after model number - blacked out model

JF after model number - Japan import

Hopefully this helped. I had a lot of fun making this.

Maybe you can still find some swatch automatic chronographs based on the C01.211 but they are basicly disposable.

Also the chinese airforce with the ST19 allows a mechanical chronograph for quite cheap, (not automatic) but reliability is an issue, sizzle watches also has this http://www.sizzlinwatches.com/proddetail.php?prod=ticino-military-aquachrono-watch which is Panerai inspired and uses a chinese 7750, dont expect reliability or accuracy,

Unless you want to buy a 2nd hand Seiko 6138, i dont think you should go for anything mechanical under 700-900 bucks which is what entry level swiss 7750´s cost.

Now quartz wise, you were right to look Casio, Seiko and Citizen. The japanese still make some of the best quartz movements around, Casio makes bottom bargin watches which are amazing.

Album with other bands

I absolutely love my Blue Mako. It was a gift from my girlfriend in December and I picked the version with the rubber strap because I knew I would change it any way. Until about a week ago I wore it with the blue NATO, but I recently purchased the leather NATO and fell in love again.

I haven't officially tested the time, but unofficially it has been great. "The School of Horology" reviewed the movement and it performed very well. (Incredibly well for a $100.00 US watch.) Video

The watch was purchased on Amazon.com and is available now for just under $100.00 US. Amazon Link

I honestly don't have any cons for this watch. It quickly became my daily watch due to its durability and versatile style, due to the strap changes. I've banged this thing into all sorts of stuff and it's held up like a champ. The value is incredible and for $20.00 strap you can give it a total face lift.

A Rolex is a Rolex - but it also carries a lot of weight with it. I would love to have Rolex GMT - but - it just is not something that is in the budget right now. Even if it was...

That said, I have two Seikos (including the MIJ version of this one. For a wee bit of extra exclusivity - you should look into the Seiko SKX009 made in Japan. These are sometimes available on Amazon - and take a little more digging, but aren't extraordinarily more expensive. The black version is available on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/SKX007J1-Analog-Japanese-Automatic-Rubber-Divers/dp/B000RF6QRY Although you'll need a new bracelet - which are available online as well.

It's a great watch and I get lots of compliments on mine. It will keep the same time as a Rolex iand is super heavy. You might also want to look at Orient watches. OR if you want to go up a few dollars but less than a Rolex check out Tudor.

Believe me know one in watch circles would see it as anything other than a wonderful, affordable watch. Not a rip-off in the least bit.

Everyone on this subreddit recommends to steer clear of fashion watches, but I like to recommend that you get a watch that YOU WILL ENJOY AND LIKE. You will ultimately be the one who will be wearing it anyways, so why not get that Mickey Mouse watch you been eyeing?

But as a fan of horology, I'd recommend these watches that have similar designs to what you linked above.

Not exactly sure where to find a panda styled chronograph with time indicators at the 12 and 6 area, but here is one from Seagull. I'm personally not a fan of the Seagull brand. Mechanical movement

Little more than 300, but it's a fan favorite among this community. It also comes with an automatic movement

No one has mentioned snow! Here are the basics of what you'll need.

  • Boots. Something similar to LL Bean Boots would be ideal. It will snow and slush and you want your boots to be warm and waterproof. People will wear normal shoes during winter, but they'll also have cold and wet feet.
  • Gloves. Try to avoid really thin materials. Fleece should be good enough until you realize what you're comfortable with. Old Navy sells cheap fleece ones to get you started.
  • Jacket. You want something with multiple layers with a waterproof exterior. Bonus: has a hood and the ability to tighten around the waist with little bungee knobs (wind up your jacket sucks). North Face is a very popular brand, but can be expensive (>$250). North Face and Columbia also sell jackets that have a removable inner fleece jacket, so you can wear it across multiple seasons.

    Other goodies:

  • Hat - anything goes, from beanies to those big furry ones
  • Scarf / one of these thingies - fantastic for covering your chin and nose on a super windy day
  • 180s
  • Wool socks
  • Long underwear / Under Armour style tight-fitted shirts and pants

And if you ever drive in the snow, two things: accelerate slowly and brake before you turn, not during the turn.

Navy Seals:

The Best G-Shock Military Watches Under $100

It’s no secret that Casio G-Shock watches are very popular with service members. For under $100 it’s the best military watch that can stand up to the most demanding use and the harshest environments.

Military Dress Codes:

While certain units may have their own dress codes, there aren’t any strict regulations on wearing watches in the military other than to keep it simple and conservative. Regarding jewelry in Army Regulation 670–1, the U.S. Army states “Soldiers may wear a wristwatch … with Army uniforms, unless prohibited by the commander for safety or health reasons,” and goes on to say “Any jewelry or monitors worn by Soldiers while in uniform or in civilian clothes on duty must be conservative.”

2201 of the U.S. Navy’s Uniform Regulations states “Wristwatch / Bracelets. While in uniform, only one of each may be worn.”

In AFI 36-2903, the U.S. Air Force is more specific on what constitutes a conservative watch and says, “Conservative examples (not all inclusive) are solid color black, brown, silver or gold. Prohibited examples are diamond-covered, neon, bright colors, and bands that exceed 1-inch width..”

The U.S. Marines Corps Uniform Regulations state “Inconspicuous watches are authorized for wear in uniform.”

Based on these regulations we can be safe to assume that any dark, solid-color G-Shock watch is acceptable for military use in any branch.

While any G-Shock model can handle the rigors of military life, we’ve chosen the following watches for their conservative styling, low prices, features/usability, and battery life. We’ve left out the pricier Master of G and aviation models which could also be good military watches and are sticking to the basics for those who just need a reliable timepiece to use in the field with basic features like a stopwatch and countdown timer.

Tough Solar G-Shock Watches: One major decision to make when buying a G-Shock is whether to buy a watch that has the Tough Solar feature. With Tough Solar watches, the battery can last up to 9-10 months after a full charge, and the battery will continue to recharge whenever exposed to light, so a dying battery is not a concern. The rechargeable battery is expected to last for many years (in many cases beyond 10) and will generally outlast a normal battery. So a Tough Solar watch is a good choice if you expect to be somewhere remote for a while where you can’t change the battery. We usually prefer Tough Solar watches, but also keep in mind that the regular batteries tend to last a lot longer than their estimated life if you don’t use the backlight a lot.

Standard G-Shock Features: All the following watches have the G-Shock standard features: shock resistance, water resistance up to 200 meters, 12 or 24 hour formats, and an electro-luminescent backlight or LED light. Unless otherwise noted, they also feature world time, auto calender, 4 daily alarms including 1 snooze alarm, stopwatch, countdown timer, and button tone on/off setting. All selections have a a resin band for easy adjustment and maximum comfort.

THE BEST G-SHOCK MILITARY WATCHES UNDER $100

Note: Prices may have fluctuated from the time of publication and some watches may currently be over $100. Also models might be priced higher than $100 on international Amazon sites.

G-SHOCK G100-1BV

The G100-1BV adheres to the military’s K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid) principle for those who prefer a no-nonsense watch with analog hands. The time or date is also shown on a small digital display and the watch features magnetic resistance, 1 daily alarm, stopwatch, and auto calender. The battery is rated for 3 years.

PROS: Simple design, easy to see analog style
CONS: No countdown timer, no world time, adjusting the time can take a while

The GWM530A-1 is one of the sleeker looking G-Shocks with a relatively low profile and has Multi-Band 6 capability for automatic time syncing via radio signals from transmitting stations in the US, UK, Germany, Japan (2), and China. A distinct advantage of this watch is that the digits on the LCD display are very large compared to other G-Shocks.

PROS: Large display, solar charging, Multi-Band 6

The simple and confident looking GW6900-1 has an easily accessible EL backlight button on the front of the case which makes it a good choice for those operating in the dark. The DW6900-1V is a more affordable option with the same case but it lacks Tough Solar charging, Multi-Band 6, and world time. The GW6900 descends from the DW6600 which was the first G-Shock with the EL backlight and was issued to Navy SEALS.

Let me give you some product recommendations. I trail ride in Missouri winters. For pants, I wear long underwear which is under fleece pajama pants which is under jeans. Make sure these layers are bigger than your normal size. You don't want tight clothes. Because I'm a trail rider, I don't need a lot of dexiterity in my hands. I prefer mittens because they are a lot warmer than gloves. I use these liners under these mittens. My hands have never been cold with this setup. For legs, I got these socks. These are wonderful! My feet really stay warm and these socks are really thin. I didn't have these last winter but so far, I'm impressed. I also will layer these socks under wool socks. My thighs get cold a lot too. Last year, I made a thigh warmer. I went to a resale shop and bought a elastic waist skirt 4 sizes too big, a XXL fleece men's pullover, and a XXL men's rain jacket. I cut the skirt up the front and the back, leaving the waistband intact. I then cut apart the fleece and sewed that onto the leg panels of the skirt. I then sewed the rain jacket completely around the fleece so horse hair wouldn't get the fleece too dirty. This just hangs down over my legs while I ride. I goes a couple inches past my knees. It is wonderful. I tried to look for something that was commercially available, but I couldn't find anything I liked. I have gotten all this cold weather stuff after leaving school. (I went to school in Iowa and took dressage lessons). Man it was cold up these! But with this setup, I'm confident that I could stay comfortably warm in an Iowa winter. Good luck!

I'm not a big fan of the font used for the numbers, it's not for me. It's also not sold by Amazon.com. If they had used a sans-serif font I'd have liked it a lot.

I just bought this watch used and while this one isn't sold by Amazon.com, this black one is. I love it so far. It's meant to resemble the Omega Speedmaster professional. It's just a Casio but for $50 I'm quite happy with it and it's well-liked on Reddit and watchuseek.

This fossil watch worked out to more than I wanted to spend but I like it a lot and with 20% off it'd be right in your price range. It has a cream-coloured face and is really nice in my opinion.

Both watches I have recommended are 41mm, which are not too big on my 6.5mm wrist, they're actually perfect. I imagine they'd still be ok on as small as a 6" wrist. They're 1mm bigger than the black Seiko you're looking at for reference.

I bought an Orient Ray a few months ago due to suggestions here on this sub and I love it. Orient makes great affordable watches and the Ray is a perfect example of that - less than half your budget on amazon.

Looks great, feels heavy and durable, WR 200m, awesome lume, and has an awesome movement made in house by Orient. Can't really go wrong for the price.

u/CopyrightedThought · 1 pointr/Watches

So do you want a diver or a business casual dress watch? The two watches you posted are VERY different in terms of where they work. Regardless, I would shy away from the Invicta. Here
is a higher quality diver, the Orient Mako, that is virtually the same. Same dimensions and everything.

It's hard to tell by your post but it seems you want this for the purpose of being able to dress it up more than dress it down. If you are willing to save another hundred dollars I think you could do well with the Hamilton Khaki Field. Can be either dressed up or down quite easily and goes well on a NATO.

Otherwise, dress watches like a Rodina or Orient Bambino might be more up your alley. Good luck!

u/narwhalpiguy · 4 pointsr/gshock

If you want any watch with both a compass and temperature readings, it sounds like you'd be better off with a Casio Pro-Trek. They have more sensors than G-shocks, and are normally cheaper.

Here's one that costs only 50$ and has a compass, altimeter, thermometer, and barometer. That being said, it's not solar powered, and it has a negative display, which some people dislike (negative displays are slightly harder to read than positive ones).

If you want to go cheaper or really want a positive display, here's a 40$ one, but it does not have a compass or tough solar.

If you have your heart set on a g-shock. The only one with a compass and thermometer is this one, which, at 180$, does break the bank.

If you don't really care about a compass or thermometer that much and really want a g-shock, I can personally vouch for this at 40$, it's a steal. Other commonly recommended G-shocks are this one because it's less bulky and this one because not only is it less bulky, but it's one of the cheapest G-shocks with multiband-6 (for automatically syncing itself to the correct time) and tough solar.

My overall recommendation to you would be the 50$ Pro-Trek, as I think it fits your needs the best for cheap. However if you are against negative displays, it might not be for you.

Edit: Also the watch you chose is pretty cool. I just saw it was only 62$ on Amazon, that's a great option as well.

u/e39lemansm5 · 3 pointsr/Watches

I'd recommend one of Orient's divers:

Ray

Mako

There are several color options and they are great for the money. In house movements, decent bracelets and in my opinion, great looking. I have the ray raven and love it.

If you want to spend a little more, the Bernhardt Binnacle Diver is another great option. I also own one of these and I can tell you the biggest difference compared to the Orients is in the bracelet. It has to be one of the best ones on the market in that price range.

Seconded.

OP, don't get discouraged because everyone's opinions generally lean away from Invicta; we're trying to help you in the long run. If you like the watch, go for it. But if you want you can check out some of these higher quality pieces in that price range and see if any catch your eye.

Seiko SKX007K

Really tough watch, which is good for a gym setting, not too flashy (because if you're thinking too much about how your watch looks at the gym, you're not working out properly), rubber strap is better than nylon or leather because of sweat. Plus, it's something that can easily be worn outside of the gym as well, just a great watch overall.

Having said this, I really urge you to look at a digital like this G-Shock. Provides a lot of functions that might be useful in the gym that you won't get with a watch like the easy reader or the Seiko I showed, they're tough as nails (I've had one for about 10 years now and is still in great condition), and they look right in a gym.

u/ashirian · 3 pointsr/Watches

I think you could find good citizen Eco Drive that has similar function as PRC200 : http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-AT0200-05E-Eco-Drive-Chronograph-Canvas/dp/B000EQR6H0/ref=sr_1_6?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1335766853&sr=1-6

Another option for quartz since you were looking at PRC200, is Orient TT0Z001B Limited Edition STI Ion Plated chronograph.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TeMpz-cxl8A

The Orient used to give out 50% off coupon but they don't do that anymore just 30%.. so $440 retail, 50% would have been $220.

I have that Seiko SNZG13 and it's great on my wrist. I think for smaller wrist, you should look at 38mm~42mm. I have a 43mm watch and the lugs hover over my wrist. I have two 41mm watches that I wear most frequently and those are Orient and Seiko SNZG13.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Sea-Gull-M186S-automatic-designer-watch-multi-purpose-comfortable-to-wear-/280841797985?pt=Wristwatches&var=&hash=item416379c161#ht_642wt_1141

I'm getting this Sea-Gull next. For the price this is a beautiful piece with classic roman numeral dial with blue hands. I have a cheap Parnis with ST-25 but the movement is just dead accurate. More so accurate than my Orient and Seiko 7s26. I'd say accuracy is Sea-Gull>Orient>7s26 in this order with Seiko being most elusive sometimes. Plus with Sea-Gull automatic, you get the movement that you can hand wind as well as hack. So all in all the Sea-Gull may be your best bet at EXACTLY $120. You'll get a penny back.

Hope it helped.

It ain't shitty, it is just another fashion brand watch. It will likely last a long time, but that really is all I can say for it.

Were I you, I'd buy the dude a good mechanical watch as a (inexpensive) gift. The Orient Mako is, I believe, the absolute best wristwatch that one can buy for $250 or less. They are owned by Seiko (another company you can't go wrong with).

Anyway, these are just my opinions, and I doso hope that I was at least a little helpful.

You won't find a good skeleton watch in that price range. If you do find one it may look nice, but more than likely it'll be very cheaply made and won't be built to last. For around 150 you have a ton of options. I'd recommend the

Seikon SKX007

or various Seiko 5's 1 2

Orient Mako, it comes in a variety of colors

Deep Blue makes a nice dive watch, this is the quartz version, the mechanical version is a little more expensive.

You can also look into homage watches like Alpha but these are lesser quality than the ones listed above. I'd stay away from brands like Invicta, Stuhrling, and even something like Skagen. If you're going to shell out $150 might as well get your money's worth.

u/southern_bhenchode · 2 pointsr/Watches

You may also consider the G-Shock AWGM100. It has solar power and syncs to the atomic time signal. It is a very comfortable watch too, one of my most comfortable. It has a stopwatch, count-down timer, alarms, and 24-hour time in the digital display. The light on most analog/digital g-shocks is not that great, but g-shock is a very tactical watch and will survive almost anything while providing great functionality.
If you are not opposed to going all digital, I would suggest a G-Shock GDX-6900 or a slightly smaller version that supports solar power and atomic time syncing G-Shock GW-6900.
I would definitely go with a g-shock though. People in law enforcement and the military often choose a g-shock because of their functionality and outstanding ruggedness.

u/thejoollygiant · 1 pointr/Watches

I'm trying to decide between two Seiko's at the moment.

The Seiko SUN025 link

The Seiko SRP307 link

Obviously the Seiko SRP307 is the more known of the two watches being the Black Monster is one of the most iconic Seiko's around, but I'm not really sure between the two. I don't "dive" all that frequently, although I do spend a lot of my free time at the beach and the pool.

However, I've also been enamored with the Rolex Explorer II ever since I was young and saw my uncle wearing one. Being that I'm a college kid on a budget, the Explorer will have to wait until after graduation, but the SUN025 seems like a great place holder for a style of watch that I love.

What do you guys think? Does anyone have any experience with either watch?

u/jKK- · 1 pointr/Watches

It's not the initial style you were thinking about, but just for some variety, the Casio edifice series is pretty well received around here, and they have a good quality chronograph on sale currently for $39.99. If you like how it looks, you can't go wrong. With a leather band this thing is very pleasing to the eye.

You should do a bit of reading to find out more about what you might want/need in a watch. Mechanical or quartz? Date window? Alarms? Waterproof?

That Invicta has treated me very well, and thus far has given me no reason to doubt it. It keeps great time too for a mechanical (look at the bonus album I posted; you can see into the back). However, I bought it against the recommendation of a lot of the watch community. Invicta has a hit and miss reputation, though the 8926ob is one of their best regarded models. If you're looking for a "Rolex Sub clone" there are some other options out there in a slightly higher price range that are from more respected brands. /r/watches might have some recommendations for you. I would personally look at this watch: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001EWEQ3A/ref=pd_aw_sim_241_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=51zhHeruIeL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL100_SR100%2C100_&refRID=164BC614FP2Z13EXSNE9

That all being said, the reviews for the 8926ob model are pretty positive, and Invictas may have just done it all right this time. Look at my other reply about the watch too. The movement (gears and springs) are made by a very reputable Japanese manufacturer, Seiko. Just be warned that it might not be a watch that will last long enough to be passed down to your grandkids like a real Rolex or something.

u/PossiblyHanSolo · 9 pointsr/EDC

Any of them are good. Knowing the model you had would be good.

My old recommendation would be anything in the 5600 line. There are many options, it isn't huge, and it fits well. That being said, for the last three months, I've been wearing the GW6900, and I love it. Little bigger than the 5600, but still very comfortable.

https://www.amazon.com/G-Shock-GW6900-1-Tough-Solar-Black/dp/B00284ADAI

You can't go wrong with any G-shock, but there are so many options that it might be best to look at their website to see what catches your eye.

Agreed that the wind is the worst...your hands and face are most vulnerable. Here's some specific items I got that have helped me through the cold weather. I got these PI gloves which are great, but my fingers got a bit cold below 40°F, so I got these glove liners. The combination keeps my hands warm at any temperature.

I also love this balaclava. It's thin enough to fit under a helmet and the material is thinner near your mouth, making it easier to breathe. You can wear it with the facemask down or the head cover down depending on the temperature too.

u/csulildude · 3 pointsr/Watches

I don't think this is what you wanted exactly but… I would recommend all 4. Seiko and citizen are two great watch companies for the price point. My one other recommendation is for the orient mako Black, Blue, Amazon search for other colors. That said to help make a decision you should ask yourself a few questions.

Do you want an automatic or quartz?

What size watch do you want? (How big are your wrists?)

Which one do you like the best?

u/whatisthis147 · 0 pointsr/malefashionadvice

No, that's not what you're looking for. The only reason you'd get a Timex is because you want to save money, right? If you're willing to put in extra money for a watch band, you should just get a better watch altogether. There is no point in upgrading a Timex; it's like getting getting a new paint job for your busted pickup instead of getting a nice sedan. These are some great alternatives. 1 2 3 This site is pretty good for cheap straps.

u/Chewbacca_007 · 7 pointsr/JamesBond

The watches can be done better for similar prices.

For the Connery Submariner-style watch, a Seiko SKX007 (now discontinued, so going up in second-hand price) or the Orient Ray are good, automatic pieces that can be found for $200 or less, stand out on their own, and look good paired with a Bond Nato (green on black, IIRC, 1-2mm too small for the lugs, if you want to get picky) strap.

For the Craig Bond Spectre Seamaster look, the Seiko SNZH57 looks very similar, is popular in the modding community as a start for a modded Fifty Five (google it if you're interested, I don't know much about it), and also looks good on a Bond Nato (grey on black strap).

If you're looking for an 'Aviator' in that price range, I'd say this [Hamilton] (http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-H64611535-Khaki-Pilot-Black/dp/B0043RWFO0/ref=pd_sim_sbs_241_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=515gXpaE97L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR103%2C160_&refRID=0BZVPT56563Z8Y1KPNMG) is great. It comes with different strap options, like metal, and some variations to the dial and day/dates, look around!

As far as skeleton watches go, there are plenty of good ones. I know this [Bulova] (http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-96A119-Silver-Black-Mechanical/dp/B004OSBJ0Y/ref=sr_1_106?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1450739705&sr=1-106&nodeID=6358539011&keywords=watch&refinements=p_36%3A30000-50000%2Cp_89%3ABulova) made one is very well received, however it's more of an open heart. Ah, I misread it. You want Paul Newman’s Daytona, but couldn’t quite match the $17.8 million top bid :-)

Not my area of expertise, unfortunately. That said, citizen eco-drive watches are good at that kind of price point. They do some nice looking chronos.

The Dan Henry 1963 is quite classic looking, sold as a pilots watch, but honestly, looks like it belongs in a car too.

You won’t get an auto Chronograph under $500. Seagull do handwinding watches at that price, if you like the styling.

I wanted to get into watch collecting but I realized its an expensive hobby and I'm a young guy in college. I didn't know where to start, but started reading about Japanese watches and then the Orient Blue Mako really caught my eye. I love the divers watch style. I bought a Nato strap because everyone loves them here and I plan on finding a metal bracelet to pair this with when I can afford one. I know this isn't really a glamorous piece, but I thought I could make my post interesting with a timelapse gif! If anyone has any recommendations on a metal bracelet for this by the way, let me know!

I bought the watch here with a rubber strap.

Here's the higher quality source video!, not sure if video posts are allowed here so I converted it to a gfycat for this post.

The CASIO G SHOCK DW 5610 BJF , needed a beater for everyday work/exercise so ended up buying this beauty. Old skool retro cool. With 10 month power reserve, atomic technology and super durable what more can you ask for in a beater.
I know people say negative display is harder to read, but I haven't really had much issue with it. It is true the screen can be quite dark at times but the crispness of the LCD screen still makes the numbers clear and pronounced. Been a week now and am very happy with the purchase.

EDIT: This is in fact the GW 5610 1BJF model. If you are interested in getting yourself a beater watch such as this I got mine on Amazon and there were no dramas with it, speedy delivery.

I'm going to ramble in this comment a little bit because this post is more for me to come back to as the year progresses

I initially attempted to stop nail baiting on January 1, 2016 but ran into a few issues. I had about 80 packs of gum I had gotten from some deals, and was trying to chew that all the time to prevent biting nails, but my jaw started to hurt. I reduced gum intake and started biting again. I still have like 40 packs of gum so I will restart this and try to just move the gum around my mouth rather than chew it.

I purchased these gloves on Amazon because they were lightweight ones I could wear at home. They work and are pretty comfortable, but since they are silk the fingertips tear kind of easily (my index fingers both did but it's okay). I was unable to find other lightweight gloves that might hold up better. They are thin, breathable, and you can usually type and use a touchscreen decently with them. I really recommend getting these and put them on the moment you get home or are out or do anything.

I started to relapse in the last half of 2016 because I was trimming/filing my nails and they would be uneven and snag a lot so I was trying to "remedy" this with my teeth. I would basically bite them but there would still be white nail left on the top. If you can see in the pictures, the nail beds themselves are uneven and the nails grow unevenly and I try to remedy that with my teeth.

These pictures are after about two weeks to finish the year of not biting. My thumbs I've actually done really well with since ~ March of 2016. I don't think I ever bite my thumbs at all. A big problem I have is that the nails get dirty because of the gaps underneath them and I try to use my teeth to clean it. That is something I need to avoid as well.

There's my ramble. I plan to take photos on the first day of every month this year to track progress, and I will probably purchase a small metal nail file, maybe that I can even keep in my wallet to take out when i want it. The one on the Swiss Army Knife on my keys is shit.

[This one] (http://www.amazon.com/Orient-CEM65004B-Black-Automatic-Rubber/dp/B001EWEQ4E/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1382894636&sr=8-12&keywords=orient+watch) looks fantastic. I don't like the band it has, but that can be easily replaced. The one thing that I wouldn't like is that I couldn't show off the mechanical movement and that it can gain or lose 30 seconds a day. I like the black look it has, and its awesome size.

u/blackice7 · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

That's actually a good budget to get a decent entry-level watch.

If you're into a sporty, yet classy look, I would check out dive watches. They're versatile, indestructible, and will look good with most outfits.

I was in the same situation as you, and was deciding between the Orient Mako http://amzn.to/rivjad or the classic Seiko SKX007 http://amzn.to/qbWT5Z. I ended up with the SKX007 because it was unique, and a long time favorite within the watch community.

You can get either one of those <$150 on eBay from trusted sellers. Can't get much more bang for your buck.

u/klew3 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

There are lots of watches linked to there but they all seem pretty good. And I'll throw in that I got this Orient black Mako on watchyouseek for about $70 used and in perfect condition though it took about a month for the right watch to pop up.

u/flyinhyphy · 9 pointsr/Watches

I've seen some weekenders on this sub and really liked its clean look. I was surprised to see on the amazon that you could buy them in various different straps, at many different prices. I chose this one as an homage to my alma mater. The indiglo is a nice touch.

Next up to purchase for me are either: the Casio gold calculator watch, the Casio gold world time watch (though I like the classic illuminator one as well, not to mention I'm torn between gold vs. stainless steel), or the Seagull 1963 . Also debating between the Casio MVD106 and a Seiko diver (so many options...).

u/005 · 1 pointr/Watches

Would you consider the SKX007 or Black Monster (and here's Gen 2)? These are somewhat obvious suggestions, but the quality of the cases on these two are so much better than the Seiko 5s. The Gen 2 is especially interesting because it uses a 4R36 movement, which has a hacking seconds hand. That said, the SKX007 is prettier IMO.

u/eclipse75 · 22 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Usually there are always debates about a Seiko and the Citizen Eco Drive watch. You can get a Seiko automatic mechanical watch for under $150 that uses the popular and reliable 7s26 movement. Another popular watch would be one of the Orient Mako dive watches. I already own a Seiko SNK807 watch and just ordered a Seiko Orange Monster online (both of which use the 7s26 movement).

The reason why I chose the Seiko over the Citizen is because I wanted mechanical watch with the sweeping second hand rather than a quartz jumping second hand. But, with the Citizen, it'll never stop (unless you live in a cave or the sun blows up). Automatic watches will stop after about 40 hours of no movement.

Orient Mako is a very popular dive watch. It comes in a wide variety of colors (with black and blue being most popular). http://www.amazon.com/Orient-CEM65001B-Black-Automatic-Watch/dp/B001EWEQ3A/ref=sr_1_22?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1325124897&sr=1-22

Quartz is more accurate I believe, though mechanical watches are usually accurate to +/- 5 to 10 seconds a week (or was it day?). If the watch isn't solar powered then you'll need to replace the battery on the watch every so often. Also with the non-stop Invicta watches you see on Amazon, I've heard some people say some bad things. For sure brands though are Citizen, Orient, and Seiko in your price range. I don't know how BI4L they'll be though. Don't solar panels lose their effieciency over time? Also the 7s26 movement uses a few plastic gears. I don't know much about the insides of the Mako. They should all last 30 years easily though with some maintenance (taking for a tune up every 5-10 years).

What you want is called a chronograph, which at least in the world of analog watches means a stopwatch right on the main dial, with a dedicated button to start and stop. Such a watch should fill your "quick access" requirement just fine.

Cheapest would probably be the Casio Edifice (example one two three) line of quartz chronos, but there are others, e.g. Timex Fly-Back (another [in white] (http://www.amazon.com/Timex-Intelligent-Fly-Back-Chronograph-Leather/dp/B0053EXKVE/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1368595494&sr=8-13&keywords=quartz+chrono) ) There are may other brands like Pulsar, Citizen, Festina or Bulova who offer cheap quartz chronos; even some Seikos go for under $150.

Now of course if you need more features from your stop watch, like multiple timers or lap-times you'll have to look into digital sports watches, there are also plenty of them around (g-Shock is recommended most of the time). Here I's recommend trying them out in a store because usually you won't find the description on how to access the timers on the web easily.

>Well that's not really how trade value works. This is not a for sale, but rather a trade. I.e is skx is worth about the same, yes you could buy one new for around 175, but you don't. This is just an rough number for people to reference when trading. I understand that's you could buy it new, but people aren't wanting to pay for a brand new watch, but instead just trading their used one for another's used watch.

I mean, you do your thing man, but if you're valuing it at over retail ($165) for a used Blue Ray, in that case, someone can valuate their SKX at over retail as well. Want to buy my SKX007J at $280?

I'd say Citizen Eco-Drive (for analog) or Casio (for analog or digital). While Seiko does have solar watches, they don't seem to be as popular as Citizen or Casio (Seikos are still good watches, though).

Citizen has some really nice dressier solar watches, while Casio has some very rugged and functional ones. In particular, Casio's G-Shock line is perhaps the gold standard for rugged (but not necessarily pretty) watches (but not all G-Shocks are solar, though).

If you can find an affordable one, and live in an area where it can be used, a solar/atomic watch is also useful. Casio makes a lot of affordable options, like this one, but they're not necessarily the prettiest. Citizen tends to make higher-end versions. Citizen also has an awesome solar/GPS watch that works worldwide, but it's not cheap at ~$862.

Edit: also, when looking at watches on Amazon, double-check the specs with an outside website. The specifications on an amazon listing aren't always correct.

Watch

Strap

I was never a fan of bracelets, especially since I have small wrists and the sizing makes the clasp sit awkwardly. I had a devil of a time finding a small, quality strap but finally managed to, even though shipping from Germany takes a bit of time (2 weeks, in this case, slightly prolonged because of holidays I'm sure).

The padding helps the strap match the case thickness better, but it's rather inflexible and the shortness of the strap doesn't help there. Overall, though, I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

u/sidtel · 2 pointsr/Watches

I apologize, there have been a lot of "what watch should I get for $xxx?" threads lately and I seem to have gotten confused.

AsianEnigma has some good recommendations, but if you aren't dead-set on a chronograph, I suggest looking into some Orient's. The Mako is gorgeous and extremely good quality for the price.

Be prepared to be told to not wear a watch during basic but I'd get a decent solar/atomic G-Shock: http://www.amazon.com/Casio-GW6900-1-G-Shock-Atomic-Digital/dp/B00284ADAI they're indestructible and really are perfect watches for military use. You can get a very clean Christopher Ward watch with a Swiss movement for under $500. I just purchased this Christopher Ward "flieger" (German flight watch) style piece, and I love it.

I'm finding that at the $400-$500 range you have a huge variety of decent quality timepieces to choose from. I can afford more expensive watches, but I'm still uncomfortable with the idea of anything more than $1K on my wrist.

By the way, by no means do you even have to spend that much for a great watch. The Orient Blue Mako and the Seiko Monster are popular and well regarded, and they're both inexpensive.

u/imalloverthis · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Your strap on the submariner looks great. On a related note, I would love a red october for my Casio Edifice arriving tomorrow. :)

u/skipsmagee · 1 pointr/Watches

Watch or jewelry shops in your area might have some. For budget-friendly options, try Hadley Roma on Amazon, usually $15-30. You just need a small screwdriver and a steady hand to push back the spring bar from the lug on the watch case. You'll typically need a width of 22mm, maybe 20 or 24; just measure the distance between the lugs or check the specs.

For a high quality watch for your dollar, especially your first (or first serious) watch, try a Citizen Eco-drive, Seiko, or Orient. Many of these don't require a battery change every couple years: the Eco-drives charge its battery from any light source, though this battery may have to be replaced after a decade. An Automatic winding watch, like the Seiko 5 line or the Orient Mako or Ray, use the movement of a counterweight (rotor) while you wear it to store energy in a spring. This energy will run out after about 1.5 days, so either wear it or shake it around every day.

A Timex Expedition served me well for a while, but I sure like my Citizens, Orient Ray, and Seiko 5 Military.

u/JUNGLE_HABITAT · 3 pointsr/gshock

Seiko 5 Sports SNZG series (07/09/11/13/15/17)

Price: $105-160 (depends on the model)

Water Resistance: 100m

Movement: Seiko 7S36 automatic

Size: 42mm w/o crown, <49mm tall

Link: 07 09 11 13 15 17

Surprised this thread lasted this long without this one. This particular Seiko is the big brother to the quite popular SNK803/805/807/809 line. Typical 7S movement means no hacking and hand winding. You get a Hardlex crystal, day and date complications, famous Seiko lume, and a display back. The larger case is sometimes preferred by those who find the SNK line's 37mm a bit too small. The main series is the 07/09/11/15, featuring a bead blasted case finish (matte) and a nylon strap which is matched to the color of the dial. The 13 has mixed finishing of brushed and polished and comes on a metal bracelet (folded end links and folded links, nicely concealed), and the 17 is PVD coated with a PVD coated bracelet as well (for that tacticool look), and has lumed numerals (all the others just have lumed indices).

u/syrinxOptimised · 3 pointsr/Watches

I'm not sure, I've never even heard of Claude Bernard. My guess is they buy ETA movements (which are "technically" Swiss), put them in a case, and claim they're "Swiss Made". For my money, I'd rather spend it on a watch with verified history, like a Seiko, or Citizen. Quartz is fine in your situation, if you want a chronograph, since automatic chrono movements are complex and expensive to manufacture. The one exception I can think of, if you really want an automatic chrono, is a Seagull 1963. Great watches, legendary Chinese watchmakers, and on my list for my next purchase. As a final point, "Swiss Made" doesn't mean quality, per se. In your price range, most of the nicest watches are made in Japan (Seiko and Orient), Russia (Vostok), and China (Seagull). Shop around and don't get too hung up on the Swiss label.

edit: I also just realized the Nighthawk isn't a chronograph. I didn't take the time to think it through because I don't really like them.

u/TimeToRock · 1 pointr/Frugal_Jerk

I got curious what the listing looked like before, and I found this snapshot. I couldn't find the exact price that gives $58000 savings, but this is an even better deal from 2014, when you could save $66124.91!

The Orient Mako is currently at its lowest price EVER on amazon.com

Mine is on the way in the mail, but from the reviews I have read it is an EXCELLENT timepiece at an unbeatable price. It's classy, yet versatile. You could easily take this from the farm, to the beach, to 200m underwater, and right back up to the Met for an opera (Oprah?).

I get that you are looking for more of a street watch but you will regret the purchase of a g-shock as soon as you turn 15.

u/GTI-Mk6 · 5 pointsr/EDC

Any more information ? Size, use, needs, digital, analog, battery?

Timex Weekender's are quite popular around here. Customizable, you can usually get them at target, moderately tough but be gentle, clean analog design, single function, not to big.

You can get G-Shocks in that range. Indestructible, big, endless possibilities, some can get expensive, lots of functions, typically digital, can be found at lots of stores.

u/chrispscott · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

A dive watch sounds like it would be the way to go for you. They are not meant to take absue in water and just keep going. I have some pretty small wrists too but the 38-42mm range is usually a good place to start. I would check out Part 1 or if you want more specific models you can't go wrong with an Invicta 8926OB if you want to stay under $75, Seiko SKX007 or Orient Ray if you want to stay under $200. The Invicta is a bit smaller at 40mm while the Seiko and Orient are 42mm.

u/MTeson · 1 pointr/Watches

In fact, Seagull the watch company (related to but not the same as the folks who make the movement) makes a lovely panda dial using this movement:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HMC0L1M/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's not as racing-oriented as the Lamberti or any of the other panda dials that use orange hands (like the Helgray Silverstone), but it's still pretty boss.

u/avian_gator · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I'd check out Seiko, Orient and Citizen for good brands that make quality watches in the <$200 range.

My daily wear watch is an Orient Mako, which I scored for less than $100 on Amazon. It's solid, has a very reliable and accurate automatic movement (meaning it's a self-winding mechanical watch, rather than battery powered), and it looks amazing.

I would personally recommend that you look for a watch from a reputable manufacturer, rather than buying an overpriced fashion watch. Someone else already mentioned taking a look at /r/watches, which I heartily second.

u/wrongwayseppuku · 9 pointsr/Watches

unpopular opinion to follow:

Personally, I don't understand the G shock for every day wear. For going to the gym or sporting activities, sure - but i'd prefer something less...gaudy? for edw.

For a proper adults watch and a really reasonable price point look to Orient, specifically the bambino or mako to get you started.

I've seen men at nicer events wearing g-shocks and it always strikes me as what happens when you tell a child to 'wear whatever you want', you shouldn't be too surprised when they come out of their room wearing a spider man costume.

/2cents.

If you're into a 'chunkier' design, I would reccomend the Suunto Core It's a bit higher than your price range but it's got a more streamlined look, I have one and it's tremendously useful if you're active / outdoorsy.

ProTip: Google "Best [Classic Watch Name] Homage" and you're sure to find a thread or ten on PMWF or Watchuseek. Sometimes there are a bit old and the stock is gone, but here's a few I pulled out of a WUS thread.

No information included about your desired price range so I'll just throw out a few suggestions. G-Shock is a solid choice - my favorite is the GW6900 as it is 5 buttons (dedicated light button), solar powered, and sets itself every night to the atomic clock. A slimmer option is the GWM-5610 with the same features except for the dedicated light button. These also have non-atomic non-solar versions for about half the price DW6900 and DW5600 which both come in around $45. These are classic models and won't draw unwanted attention.

If you're looking for something analog, while I hate to recommend another Casio, the MDV-106 dive watch is really hard to beat for 40-50 bucks. Water resistant to 200 meters, real functioning diver's timing bezel, applied indices, rubber strap... it's highly regarded at this price point. Good luck!

Take a look at some of the Casio Edifice models, I picked one up a while ago for $70 and feel like it was a great value. Here are a couple from Amazon:

Here is my watch. I love this for numerous reasons.

  • First, it's my first automatic watch. I'm a fan of going old school and this is one part of that. A watch that doesn't have a battery but rather is charged my the motion of your wrist.
  • Second is the price. It's an amazing watch and for less than $150, it's one hell of a deal.
  • Third is that all of the components are made in-house. Unlike your major players (Omega, Rolex) Orient makes the casing and the "guts" if you will. The big players have the inner working made my 3^rd party sources.
  • Fourth is that it's so versatile. It looks great with everyday wear or formal wear and it comes in numerous colors.

Yeah, also right now the Black Orient Mako w/ bracelet is used on Amazon for $66 as an option. Quite a good watch, and this vendor cycles through which used watches are on super sale ~every 30 minutes. Just to consider.

G-Shock 100%. There are a couple military ones with blacked out reverse dials, however they can be more difficult to see in certain light conditions than the normal dials. Here are a few models that military personnel use and some others:

GD-120

DW6900BB-1

DW6900-1V: This one is similar to a very popular G-shock used by a lot of US military, the DW-6600. I don't think they make it anymore though, but this is pretty close.

GW6900-1

GD100-1BCR

GD-120CM

GD-400

GD350-1B: This one has a yellowish tint to the digits so it's one of the easier reverse dials to read.

Mudman

Rangeman

DW5600MS-1CR: For this one there is a really cool mod you can do for about $35 more to make it look really tactial and military.

Edit Added some stuff

Start by checking out the r/watches buying guide for watches under $250. There are a lot of good recommendations in there. The Casio MDV106 can be had for less than $70 (and often goes on sale for less than $50) and it does a good job of giving a Rolex Submariner-ish look without being a straight-up copy. You mentioned that you like the look of the Omega Speedmaster, so take a look at the Casio EF503D for a similar look and much lower price. If you're looking for a mechanical, there are lots of good options listen in the buying guide, like the Seiko SKX007, which shares some visual similarities to the Rolex Sub, but very much has it's own distinct design as well.

u/Goldeneagle7777 · 1 pointr/oculus

I've got one of these that I use, and it works great! It also helps keep the HMD clean by keeping the oils or hair products from getting all over the straps.

u/mcatrage · 8 pointsr/malefashionadvice

This is a casual watch Link but very nice looking. /r/watches recommends it for the low end in terms of an automatic.

Well while I know you aren't using the word formal correctly but not many dress watches can really pass for a really casual watch and vice versa. I'm assuming you are talking about while wearing a suit. Unless you are james bond common practice is to not wear a bracelet watch while wearing a suit. If you were wearing a tux you shouldn't be wearing a watch at all.

u/1nky0ct0pus · 8 pointsr/gshock

I recommend the GWM-5610.

I wear it every day.

-Positive LCD screen with bold numbers is very easy to read in all lighting settings including close to darkness

-Auto illumination feature - turn your wrist to look at your watch and it will light up for you automatically if the solar panel senses darkness (can be turned off)

-Multiband 6 automatically sets the time by radio signal once a day so your watch is accurate down to the second at all times

-Solar powered rechargeable battery

-Low profile

The only things I do not like about it is that it is a little small on my wrist, the buttons are small, and I wish it displayed the current time in stopwatch and timer modes.

You can also go with a GWM-6900. Generally the same feature set with a light button on the front of the watch. Bigger buttons , much larger and bulkier than the 5610.

Assuming you want a mechanical watch, here are my suggestions.

Desk Diver (a dive watch that looks a little more fashionable than utilitarian):

  • Orient Blue Ray

  • Orient Mako

    Utilitarian Divers:

  • Seiko Black Monster or Orange Monster

  • Seiko SKX007

  • Citizen Promaster

These watches will have a lot of the same basic features: water resistant to 200m, screw down crown, time lapse bezel, mineral crystal etc. The Seiko's will arguably have the best lume and they also use their "Hardlex Mineral Cyrstal" which may have an advantage over the crystals of the Orients or Citizen. All of these use workhorse movements. The Citizen uses a Miyota movement that can also be hand wound.
u/kappuru · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Get this instead. 100 bucks, great quality, nice movement, and you won't cry when you scrape it against a rock. (you are going diving with this thing, right?)

u/jimigalahad · 1 pointr/minimalism

If you are looking for a nice, versatile watch I highly recommend Orient's Mako with a black or blue face. http://www.amazon.com/Orient-CEM65001B-Black-Automatic-Watch/dp/B001EWEQ3A

Very easy to read, even at night. I wear mine everyday. It is built like a tank. It looks nice with my business suits, at the gym after work, in the pool, or at a weekend bbq. It is even an automatic if you are into that kind of thing.

It may not be a minimalist lifestyle to have a watch and we can argue whether the Mako is a minimalist design, but I've chosen it b/c I like wearing a watch and it is the only watch I may ever need.

u/CARTERsauce · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I think a stainless steel watch would suit you better for versatility. For your price range, why not think about getting an Orient or Seiko? I have the former and I love it, I'm also partial to the orange one.

u/Nixtrix · 2 pointsr/Watches

Assuming your Casio is similar to the EF503D-1AV (for comparison's sake here is yours, the EF503D-7A, on Amazon. Funny note, Amazon lists yours as having a band width of 7 mm.) the listed band length is 20 mm which corroborates with what mirite had found. This means your 19 mm band you've picked out to replace the metal one with would fit but it may be a tad small for the actual area but it is a safe bet so i'd say go for it!

u/raijba · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Lots of great suggestions in this thread for things you'll eventually need like a suit, shoes, wallet, cookware, knife, etc. I just wanted to add what I've learned in hindsight: sometimes it's best to buy cheap before you BI4L so you know what you want when it's time to spent the money for the long haul. For example:

Shoes: I bout a pair of Allen Edmonds Strands in walnut for my first pair of nice shoes since I was going to be working in a business casual environment and lots of people said they were great fashionable shoes. Turns out the broquing and bright shade of brown were too fashionable for me, even though I thought it looked alright in the store. I would have gone with something tamer if I had tried a similar yet cheaper pair of wingtips like the Strands before buying a dress shoe. Same goes for boots like the Red Wings recommended in this thread.

Suit: My first suit was terrible but at the time I thought it looked fly as hell. Luckily I bought it from a cheapo tailor in Asia and wasn't out of too much. I had to spend some time in it to realize that it wasn't what I wanted. Having this suit experience was especially important since without it, I wouldn't have known what I didn't want in a new one.

Cookware: as far as cookware goes, don't dish out until you've spent some time in the kitchen with cheap shit (or easy shit). If I had started with cast iron, which requires considerably more maintenance than stainless, I might not have gotten as much into cooking as I did. Some will argue that cast iron doesn't require THAT much, but to a beginner who doesn't know left from right in the kitchen, it can be a lot to keep track of. Also, do you like working with a chef's knife or a cleaver/santoku? Non-stick or stainless? There are a bunch of preferences to develop.

Anyway I think you get my point.

For some actual recommendations: I bought an Orient Ray as my first "nice" watch. It's automatic (no batteries) and waterproof. It's not truly bi4l however since it lacks a crystal sapphire scratch proof glass face. But that costs more money.

Also, this is a good pot that is low maintenance.

u/fmalloy · 1 pointr/bikecommuting

Yep. I use a Halo skullcap version under the helmet:

https://www.amazon.com/Halo-Headbands-Skull-Cap-Black/dp/B00318BKGQ/

Yeah, it's expensive, but works great and I've been using the same one for 2 years now. It has a thin yellow rubber strip that sticks to your forehead so the sweat will never end up in your eyes.

u/aselbst · 1 pointr/Watches

Maybe paintball is not ideal for it, but I think of my Orient Mako as a pretty all purpose watch, and I'd be surprised if stainless doesn't clean well after paintball. One of my favorites and $125 at amazon

u/PapaUrsidae · 2 pointsr/gshock

Ah, I was wondering (saw the ...10-1BJF on the tag). So it's this one on Amazon Prime that I can get in 2-days? Does the date actually look like it does on the Amazon page (tiny individual dots) or are they solid numbers like your picture shows?

u/immrlizard · 1 pointr/motorcycles

yea, like I said, it is really nice with a sweatshirt or fleece under it. I rode the Blue Ridge parkway for most of a day and the neck and hands were the only things that ever were cold. I may invest in some heated gloves this year and one of these http://www.amazon.com/Chaos--CTR-Chinook-Fleece-Gaiter/dp/B002ZG7RCG/ref=sr_sp-atf_image_2_30?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1411696966&sr=1-30 That should get me through the winter easy this year.

And according to camelcamelcamel, it went down below $90 just last month.

The Khaki King Pilot from Hamilton comes pretty close. It's 42mm though. Great looking watch though.

I believe all Hamilton Pilot watches are 200m rated.

u/Captain_Midnight · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Just FYI, at 100m of water resist, the T2M563 would not customarily qualify as a diver-grade watch. That's why J. Crew calls it a "diver-style" watch. I'd recommend a Black Mako instead, which is also automatic.

Its description advises against actual scuba diving, ironically. If you need more depth and can squeeze another $15 into your budget Citizen makes a nice solar-powered quartz rated for 300m.

u/Garrison_Halibut · -8 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'll be honest: those are awful watches. My advice is to eat the $120 and get another brand--Timex, Orient, Seiko, or Citizen are your best bets. Personally, I'd recommend the Orient Blue Mako

u/NutmeggerBarber · 3 pointsr/Watches

Looks like a g-shock 5600 of some variety. I'm currently wearing my GW-M5610-1BJF (https://www.amazon.com/Casio-GW-M5610-1BJF-G-Shock-Solar-Digital/dp/B009S13XJC/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1474668089&sr=8-10&keywords=g+shock+5600) and absolutely love mine and wear it daily.

u/DarkwingDuc · 2 pointsr/Watches

>Cant say honestly that it looks more expensive than it is though

It's only $118 on Amazon, $136 with bracelet.

I haven't found anything even close to that cheap that looks and feels as good. And I've gotten more complements on it than on much, much more expensive watches I own.

u/Nothingcreativeatm · 4 pointsr/Watches

Great gift. Wear it with pride-just not to work. If you want to have a watch while working on greasy machinery, try a g-shock. They come in a ton of styles and prices, and you have to try fairly hard to break them.

u/HectorTheOwl · 3 pointsr/Watches

The bezel is the (typically) metal or ceramic ring that surrounds the dial. On a lot of watches it is stationary, just part of the case. Most divers have a uni, or bidirectional rotating bezel that is historically used to time a dive. The bezels are usually pretty large on these so that they can be easily read, even underwater.

Orient makes some really affordable, automatic divers that are often recommended here. Is that the style you're looking for?

u/dasilvasays · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

It really depends on how dressy you want to go - unless you work in a super conservative industry, you can stray relatively far from the traditional "dress" watch. A few options that are more casual/versatile but would still easily work with a suit in most settings:

u/ShawnGupta · -5 pointsr/AskReddit

Honestly? A good tech or finance internship pays 5 to 6k a month. And some people can TA and RA during the semester. Factor in scholarships and parental support and viola--lots of money.

When I graduted college I was debt free and managed to buy a handful of these and smash them in front of poor people.

u/Qu1nlan · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Thermasilk glove liners. I own 5 pairs and literally never leave the house without a pair in my pocket. They are lightweight, warm, and don't at all obstruct mobility. Great for fall or winter, or even cold summer nights depending on climate. My number will be 104!

u/hydraulx · 2 pointsr/EDC

It's pretty much an armored F-91W with a multi-function alarm, countdown timer, and more water resistance.

If you like that style and want more features, check out some of the different GW-5600 models that also have solar or wave ceptor to sync to atomic clock time signals.

My favorite is probably the GW-M5610 that has the inverse display.

Seiko SRP307 "Black Monster"

Price: $200-$250

Movement: Automatic, 4R36

Style: Dive

Size: 43mm w/o crown

Link: Google Images

Description:

This is the second version of Seiko's SRP "Monster" line of dive watches. The watches are designed and built to be rugged tool watches, and are worth every penny. While the design can be quite polarizing, I would remark that there is no substitute for seeing one in person. There are several different colourways and iterations (rubber band, steel bracelet), so you have your pick of colour / band combo, and along with other Seikos in this price category it is one of the most "modded" watches.

This watch fits the need of many beginner collectors looking for a rugged tool watch. With the "version 2" update, Seiko has added its 4R36 movement, with hacking and hand-winding. The 4R36 replaces the workhorse 7S26, and both have stood the test of time as being excellent watch movements. It is worth noting that all Seiko movements are entirely "in-house" movements, as Seiko one of the only two fully vertically integrated manufactures.

The watch is rated to 200m, which is more than enough for all-weather wear and casual swimming / recreational snorkeling. More seasoned divers may require a higher-rated watch, although I have never read a complaint about this watch failing under any stress or strain.

It is worth noting that the list price for this watch is ~$500.00. I have never seen one sold for that price, and Amazon consistently offers them for ~$200.00. They can be found for ~150.00 pre-owned. Anecdote: I bought mine new from an AD in Canada for $225. He was advertising a "deep discount" at the time. He has been advertising that same "deep discount" for years.

u/pokstad · 1 pointr/gshock

The Rangeman is really nice but it's also very large and thick so it can interfere a lot with daily tasks. Slimmer profile watches are better for not getting in the way. I would check out the 5600 or 6900 series watches:

u/dog_in_the_vent · 1 pointr/flying

I've had a Casio G-Shock Classic for years, hasn't failed me yet. Has an easy to use stopwatch and timer, and illuminates for night flying. It's a little bulky though.

I'd recommend against an analog watch, they can be harder to read in turbulence. Digitals are much easier to read at a quick glance, where analogs can lead to one or two minute errors unless you take a close look at the watch.

Casio and Timex both have decent digital watches in that range. For an analog, Vostoks are great looking if you don't mind that they can gain/lose alot of time in a day otherwise Timex and Seiko has some good basic stuff that you could put a metal or rubber band on if it doesn't come with it already. Outside of that if all you can spend is $100 most of what you'll find either gonna find are cool looking but flimsy pieces or decently made but basic watches. If you can up your budget even to $150 your options from Orient, Bulova, and Citizen open up a little bit.

Barely under $80 but I love my G-Shock 6900-1. I've owned two. Hmm...looked up affordable Pilot Watches and this Alpha popped up. I don't know if they're on sale or if the brand is good...finding day/date chronographs is quite difficult and it's unlikely you'll find them for less than $1000 (outside of a Christopher Ward C40, which isn't a pilot) or clean looking (Citizen does have the A-T Perpetual Chrono, again, not a pilot, but it does have some good travel features like atomic clock syncing).

Otherwise, this Hamilton should be in your budget.

Best all around G-shocks, in my opinion, from least to most expensive, all under $200.

Best budget leather strap to replace the one that comes with this Seiko watch?

u/Robot313 · 3 pointsr/Watches

I just got the Orient Mako two days ago as my first watch, and I love it!

Ooh, you fancy, huh?

Huh? NOT fancy

Fancy for under $10

Over 10k? Fancy!

Thanks for the contest!

u/nautimike · 3 pointsr/Watches

My recommendation would be a Oris TT1, there are a couple of versions that are around or just under $1000.

Other possibilities; Hamilton Khaki King, Tissot SeaStar, Marcello C Nettuno 3, Mido All dial diver, or Davos Ternos.

And there are numerous much less expensive, but, good quality dive watches from Seiko or Citizen.

edited for spelling

I prefer the original Mako: http://www.amazon.com/Orient-Mens-CEM65002D-Automatic-Watch/dp/B001EWEQ3K/ref=pd_sbs_watch_6 (wearing one right now)

I would also suggest digging around on here:

People there are really helpful and really into watches.

Well, if it's a bracelet you're looking for...

Speedmaster inspired Casio Edifice.

I have the green version of the 7900 and like it a lot. The second watch listed i have played with before and didn't like it because i felt like the buttons were kind of hard to press, compared to the 7900 where the buttons are completly exposed.

If you like the color scheme of the second watch more, consider this colorway of the 7900

Haha, yeah the Stargazer is nice.
This is the Casio. I've seen it talked about in the sub before and people seem to like it. For the price, I doubt you can go wrong. It also comes with a white face.
It's more similar to the automatic Speedy and most Valjioux 7750 chronos because of the sub-dial placement.

Edit: This one is also similar.

Normal Square, smaller than a King. I love this size, I prefer it to the bigger ones.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread but I have a question for an orient diver owner. I want to get this and I was wondering if it would look good on a nato leather strap. Also how big is the case, I have slightly smaller than average wrists and I was wondering if a 40mm watch would look too big.

u/lolwatman · 2 pointsr/Watches

I have an orient mako and it's great. I think it also fits the kind of style you're looking for.

I've owned all of the listed watches in this post, and I can say the most economical choice would be a G-Shock, by Casio.

I've ruined every watch that wasn't a G-Shock while searching for something stylish, and just gave up. Toughness or GTFO, lol.

The model I wear daily has solar-charging, so you won't ever have to replace a battery. It's pretty much the wrist-powered watch style, but replaced with a tiny PV-panel on the face.

It's $82, so $32 over your budget, but well worth the money.

You may consider the GW-6900. It has the classic design of the DW-6900 with the technological advancements of solar power and atomic time sync. It's a great watch that is an homage to the classic g-shocks.

Additionally, you may consider this thread on watchuseek.

I really can't stand reading your post. You sound like a pretentious/pompous ass.

This part especially makes me want to punch you in the throat:

> Outside of perhaps the Movado, non fit my idea of a watch a young professional should be wearing with his suit. Thus, I am in the market for my first $1,000 watch.

You should be more worried about deciding whether or not to get a masters degree rather than trying to determine which watch would impress your boss the most. Try to make him think you're not a trust fund baby and that hard work is more important than your watch style.

But if you really wanted to impress him, maybe you should just ask your parents to back your purchase of this watch and in exchange you can pay for your BMW's oil change this time around.

u/makingnosmallplan · 6 pointsr/malefashionadvice

the orient mako is the watch you want. Looks stunning with nato straps as well.

u/Seeker80 · 1 pointr/Watches

You've got a pretty diverse set of options. There's stuff like this Tissot. It fits the bill technically, but would also wear through your whole budget. You'd have to decide if you really want to pay that much for an automatic Tissot, when you really want an Omega. Quartz models are also far cheaper, so that's another consideration.

You can come in far under budget with a quartz Casio Edifice. This can reasonably scratch the itch, and you can spend the rest of the budget on other watches you want, or whatever.

You can also just spend a little more for a secondhand Speedmaster automatic in the first place.
