I just picked up an Icebreaker Quantum, which is still a hoodie, but isn't super thick and actually packs down quite well. I would say it definitely avoids that 'college frat boy' hoodie look...it's more slim-fitting and sleek/athletic-looking. It is also amazingly comfortable and well-constructed, quickly becoming my favourite piece of clothing ever. Pricy -- but worth it.

It is very well reviewed, won awards, lifetime warranty and on special offer at the moment.

Honestly with winter already here in a cold snap from hell I've been doing the same. Brace yourself!

First I recommend all the thermals and jackets.

Cold feet are the worst second only to wet ones. Invest in good boots and heavy socks.

If you have a thermos or if you are staying home I am a hot-cocoa addict. (Milk not water, melt marshmallows while too hot to drink, keep layering them until you can sip without burning your mouth, add cinnamon and nutmeg on top.) I recommend this to try out, its friggin' scrumptious.

Not super light, but this is my mid layer of choice down to about the mid 20's. Nice because you get a balaclava out if it too. I like that I can hike in it when it's that cold and not sweat while active.

I have been using this https://www.amazon.com/Columbia-Terminal-Tackle-Hoodie-Collegiate/dp/B01GS9SI0K/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=terminal+tackle+hoodie&qid=1557104934&s=apparel&sr=1-1 They run really big. I usually wear an XL(6'2" 195) but L is still roomy and long enough in the torso it won't ride up with pack on. This and a uv+ buff over my face and I can stay out 10hrs and not get burnt at all. It breathes well and drys very fast. Depending on the color you can get one for under $30 sometimes.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Columbia, especially when the Silver Ridge is so popular here.

I’ve actually sold my Silver Ridges and exclusively wear the Columbia Terminal Tackle hoodie. It wicks well, and is never warm when I’m hiking all day. SPF 50 as well.

MontBell Plasma down jacket - one of the warmest and most packable down jacket available. If you buy from the Japan website you can get it with pockets.

Tough to beat combo that can take you just about anywhere. Both extremely packable.

I got some of these columbia ones for kayaking and to try using backpacking too. I will probably just treat with permethrin, but haven't had a chance to try it backpacking yet.
