It's definitely enough for a nice knife, though you might want to go a bit higher for a great knife. The KaBar BK2 is actually designed with things like batoning (hammering the knife through wood as a kind of faux hatchet using another piece of wood against the blade of the knife as the hammer itself) or chopping. It's a bit over $60, currently available for $69 to be precise, but as long as you don't flat out abuse it (prying heavy things, for example) it'll serve you well and quite possibly for the rest of your natural life.

At a lower price, you can get the Condor Bushlore, which at $35 is a perfectly valid choice that will serve you well indeed.

For an even lower price yet, the Mora Heavy Companion is from one of those few cheaper knife companies that does incredible work. I wouldn't baton with it, honestly, but even if you did it'd probably hold up just fine.

At a more expensive range, the Ontario Rat-5 is an amazing bushcraft knife. The Fallkniven Pilot Survival Knife is also an amazing knife. The Benchmade Bone Collector is spectacular knife made in D2 tool steel, one of the better steels available at that price. Another amazing knife is the Spyderco Bushcraft made in O1 tool steel. Finally, the Benchmade 162 is a pretty amazing knife.

One thing you'll notice about all of these knives with the exception of the Pilot Survival knife and the BM 162 is that they're all carbon steel knives. Carbon steel is a lot tougher than stainless (with a few very, very rare exceptions I'd never trust a long knife to be stainless steel) with the trade off of being a lot more of a hassle to take care of, since it needs to be regularly cleaned and oiled.

If you want a fire starter, carry a magnesium fire starter. With the carbon steel knives, you can probably strike it against the back of the blade to create the sparks you'll want and if not (like with some of the coated ones) you'll be carrying the striker anyway.

For sharpening, you'll want to get a decent sharpening setup and start stropping. A couple of easy sharpening systems would be the superior Spyderco Sharpermaker (usually available on Amazon around the $50 mark) or the Lansky Sharpening system which while cheaper isn't as good. You could take the time to learn how to free hand it, but most casual users don't care that much because it takes a long time to get proficient at freehand sharpening. Stropping is running the blade against something like smooth leather (usually smooth leather, actually) to remove burrs along the blade of a knife made by use and sharpening and the restore a blade to a better edge without removing metal. Stropping allows for a level of sharpness unachievable by sharpening alone and extends a knife's lifetime by allowing sharpness to be achieved for longer without removing metal from the blade. To learn how to strop, watch videos on YouTube or check out guides from the sidebar of /r/knives.

Finally, if you want a whistle, just carry a whistle. If you want a mirror for signaling, carry a small signaling mirror or mirror polish the knife you buy (a process where you sand the blade with increasing grit level sandpaper until it shines like the sun and you can see yourself in the blade).

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

u/InformationHorder · 2 pointsr/reloading

There's a perfectly serviceable FAQ here which SHOULD answer the mail here, but for some reason, despite the frequency of newbie posts, no one on the mod team has increased the font size of that link on the sidebar SO PEOPLE CAN ACTUALLY SEE IT AND READ IT (Seriously mods, get with it). I'll make a "Teal Deer" version even though I oughta know better by now.

  1. I don't see any reloading manuals on that list. Buy at least two reloading manuals and read them. Did you read them? Yes? Good. Read them again. Did you do that? Good. Read them again. Did you do that? LiarGood. You still sure about this? Yes? Ok, now you may go buy your equipment. Notice how you bought and studied some manuals and then went to buy stuff? Ok, just checking.

In addition to the manuals there's some good Youtube videos out there you can watch to see what the books are trying to explain, but realize some people have better habits than others. Some guys do some pretty trick shit, but that's for advanced users only; fun to watch, but not necessarily a "try this at home" type of thing.

  2. If you're doing this for the money, most return on investment will be with the "uncommon" calibers, .30 carbine paid off my Lee Challenger setup after 700ish rounds. If you want to make pet hunting loads for each of your rifles you'll save dollars per round off premium .308 and .30-06 too. Conversely, it's hard to make a return on 9mm until you've bought components in bulk. Bulk in this case is defined as a couple thousand projectiles and multiple 8-pound cannisters of powder. Here's a good source for price comparison if you need some hard numbers to convince your wife to let you spend save money on this new wallet draining endeavor.

  3. Opinions will vary wildly, but if you're dead set on starting but really aren't sure if you'll stick with it, get a quality single stage press. Scour your favorite for-sale-by-owner websites for used tools, and keep an eye out for deals on Amazon. If you don't stick with the hobby, a quality single stage will be easiest to get most of your money back on when you sell it on ebay or RapelistCraigslist. If you like it, a quality single stage will always come in handy when you make special pet loads for accuracy, even if you upgrade to a progressive some day.

If you're plan to load for bulk, which I'm guessing is your case because you're looking to do 9mm, a turret/progressive press hybrid like the Lee Classic Turret Press, where you can take the indexing rod out and use it as a single stage if need be, might be a much better choice for you. You can start out learning in single stage mode and add the indexing rod later. Single stage and 9mm is TEDIOUS (Ask me how I know...I own a Challenger like the one you have listed) Opinions on progressive presses vary, and merely by mentioning the Lee I fully expect to receive at least a half dozen unsolicited opinions replies on the matter. A progressive is pretty much mandatory if your primary purpose is to chase savings by loading pistol calibers or .223 in bulk.

Here's my recommended list of stuff; I recommend NOT buying the Challenger KIT, because most of the stuff you'll want to upgrade later or will find you'll never use it. Take the money you're saving by not buying the kit and get the turret press I mentioned above instead. You'll spend a little bit more on certain items by going a la carte because there are a few places where not skimping gets you way more value. Buy the dies from whoever you want, quality level is up to you. For plinking purposes, and even most special tuned loads, Lee is just fine.

Buy the press and one or two calibers of dies, then buy a good digital scale, a good chamfer and deburring tool (not that shitty Lee abomination. Seriously, fuck that thing. Your hands will thank you), a cutter (plus associated gauge and shell holder for a drill), a powder funnel, a puller for when you inevitably dick it up, and a nice set of calipers and you're off to a solid start for under $350.

We could also get WAY into tumblers and the benefits of wet vs dry, but I'll leave some leftovers for others to talk about.

First things first, see if there are any fields nearby that have rentals. Go out and play with a rental before dropping $500, last thing you'd want to is spend that much money on a loadout only to find you don't like playing airsoft.

Now that being said, $500 is actually a very reasonable starting budget. I'm already going to assume that you have a good pair of boots, if you don't then you def are going to want to add that as something to purchase. So I have a basic loadout, it's going to be 3 different stores because airsoft retailers are an awful place to buy lipo batteries. A lot of these items I've either owned or know people personally who do.

So let's start off with the basics.

  • The G&G CM16 SRXL - It's a step up from their basic Combat Machine lineup, but still sub $250. It has a basic MOSFET from the factory that can be programmed to shoot either full auto or 3 round burst when set to auto. One negative about the MOSFET is I've heard reports of it burning out on 11.1v lipos, so stick to 7.4v ones for now. It is going to shoot just below 400, which makes it perfect for field play. It is a keymod rail, but the one downside is it's "airsoft spec" keymod so keep that in mind when buying keymod accessories. Overall it's a great gun for the price and very much a good starting gun.

  • ALTERNATIVE ICS PAR MK3 - This gun is on sale right now, down from $340 to $214, so if you can get it while it's this cheap then it's a steal. ICS guns are tanks and they are very easy to work on down the line due to their split gearbox design. My first gun was an ICS CXP-16 and it is still running for the dude who bought it from me to this very day. You may need to drop a new spring in, but again due to the split gearbox that's super easy.

  • G&P High RPS midcaps - Great mags for a great price. The will handle damn near any ammo and any rounds per second you can throw at it. They are a bit tight in some guns, you might have to give your mag a bit of a love tap to get it to lock in, but at the same time that means there is very little mag wobble. 5 mags is more than enough for your basic open play. If you're wanting to go to longer events down the road, you can just buy another set of 5 and you're golden.

  • G&P CompM4 Replica - I use this red dot on my shorter M4. It's got a great build quality, comes with a kill flash to keep your scope protected, and takes AA batteries. That last bit about taking AA batteries is my favorite part, I am awful about forgetting to turn off my red dot and it's nice to know that it takes a very common battery.

  • LBX Lock and Load Chest Rig in Project Honor - The LBX Lock and Load chest rig is one of the most underrated chest rigs on the market. It can hold damn near anything you'd need for a day of playing. It's very easy to take off and put on thanks to the large zipper up front. It has plenty of padding in all the right places to keep you comfortable throughout the day. It's overall just a great value. The Project Honor camo one being only $25 is an absolute steal, I personally picked one of these up when I saw that price and it's well worth it. It may not be the prettiest camo out there, but you can't even come close to that quality in the $25 price range.

  • Krytac .25g BBs 4000 count - Great BBs, never had any issues with them feeding. It's one of the 4 brands of BBs I will use in my rifles.

  • 6mmProShop 500 round speedloader - A nice, basic speedloader. Better than the smaller pistol mag sized ones since you don't have to fill it up after every freaking magazine. I had one of these for a while, only reason I don't still use it is because someone stole it at an open play. A step up would be the Odin Sidewinder but that puts your budget over $500.

All of this with the Free3Day coupon code puts you at $410.

Now we get to protection gear (and a charger)

  • Pyramex I-Force Dual Pane Goggles - Great pair of budget priced goggles. I personally use these on longer games or days when I just don't feel like running my larger goggles. For anyone that doubts the quality of these Valken rebrandes them for their Zulu goggles and charges almost twice as much.

  • OneTigris mesh lower facemask - Better than the full mesh ones because the cloth on the sides conforms to your face better. There is still plenty of padding on the cloth sides to protect your face and it gives you a better cheek weld on the rifle. Only complaint I have is they do tend to get a little hot if it is very hot outside, but that's the tradeoff for protection.

  • Tenergy lipo charger - Nice, basic lipo charger. You'll need this for the batteries I'm linking later. I use this charger personally, haven't had any issues with it yet.

If you have Amazon Prime, that put's this portion to a total of $53. Overall we're at $463.

Now for the batteries. I always suggest HobbyKing for purchasing lipos, they have by far the best prices on lipos. These 1200 mAh 2s nunchuck lipos should work great for your gun. Lipos are going to give you a better trigger response than NiMH batteries. I'd order two of these, which are about $13 total. Shipping will cost you about $9.

    Overall total: $485
u/DeusExHonda · 5 pointsr/BikeGear

Definitely do able sub $1k, but don't cheap out either. Buy stuff you'll actually wear. Bulky gear you leave at home does you no good in a slide. Here's an example of a potential rundown of gear (some I own, some I don't. This isn't an endorsement, unless stated. It's just giving you an idea). All new prices, so with sales and checking deals at your local shops it could be less. Some stuff like helmets I say ALWAYS buy new. Other things like jackets are okay lightly used (and I do mean lightly, don't buy someone's gear they've worn for the last 20 years. Sun and age can make it less protective).

Helmets

  • HJC CL-17 - $125 Link

  • Bell Qualifier - $110 Link

  • Icon Alliance - $150 Link

Make sure you go into a store and try it on. Wear it for a few minutes. Here's a good guide on fit for helmets. DOT rated at a minimum. SNELL suggested. Some people say the SNELL rating is overkill and causes the helmet to be too rigid being worse in a crash. I've never given it a second thought. I own the HJC helmet. One thing I will say with pretty much any budget helmet is it will be louder. In town I don't think that's a problem but on the highway, especially for longer rides you'll want to get ear plugs. I suggest these. They're cheap enough, comfortable, and come with a nice carrying case.

    Jackets

Regardless what you buy, again go into the store and try them on. They should fit snugly. In the $150-250 range should get you a good jacket with shoulder and elbow armor. Back armor is sometimes sold separately. When it is, D30 is my go to. I bought the Klim CE level 2 - $50 armor but there is also the Icon CE level 1 - $25 version. How expensive the jacket is isn't the determining factor for if it includes a back protector either. And one's that don't usually include a foam filler. Don't let that fool you, it's not meant to protect you in a slide.

  • Icon Overlord - $150 Link Back protector included

  • REV'IT! Eclipse - $180 Link Back protector extra

  • Firstgear Mesh Tex - $180 Link Back protector extra

    Pants

A lot of this will depend on the weather and the dress code at work. If its more strict (business casual - no jeans) spend the money on the Rev'it. They are absolutely amazing, and the first pants I've found that have flexible knee armor I can actually comfortably walk around in and sit at my desk with.

  • REV'IT! Alpha RF Chinos - $200 Link

  • AGV Sport Alloy Riding Jeans - $130 Link

    Gloves

Can't forget gloves. I've found this is not a place to cheap out on. I have yet to find a sub $50 glove that is comfortable AND that I trust would protect me in a slide.

  • Icon Pursuit - $75 Link

  • REV'IT! Striker 2 - $90 Link

  • REV'IT! Fly 2 - $90 Link

    Boots

A lot of this comes down to personal preference and fit, but I really like the TCX boots.

  • TCX X-Square - $100 Link

  • Speed and Strength Black 9 - $100 Link

    Total

So for in the area of $565 to $800 you have all the gear you need to get started. Also Revzilla has a rebates program so chances are you'd be able to save some money if you split it into two purchases.

    Hope this helps!

Hi! And welcome!

I like the Gayle Bradley 2 in M4, and the BM Valet in M390, but they are both very expensive to start out with. The Shuffle II is kind of crappy - I'd definitely pass on that one. I have no experience with
the Bartender Defeder, but even the XL version looks too small, as is the Rodie. The Delica and Leek are great knives, and would likely be solid options (their ergonomics are better than their handle lengths suggest, especially the Delica). The CRKT M16 is ok, but it's not great (in my opinion). I've never handled CRKT's Endorser, but it looks like a solid choice.

My best suggestion is a RAT 1 in D2. It's 40 bucks and you get a very well-made knife in D2 (semi stain resistant and will hold an edge for a good long time). The AUS-8 version is good, too, but if you're cutting boxes, the D2 option will stay sharp way longer.

As for some other options, here are some good ones from CRKT:

Foresight - It's big and comfy in-hand, but it's expensive for the materials used (aluminum and AUS-8)

Shenanigan - lighter and cheaper than the Foresight, but with the same blade material (AUS-8)

Outrage - aluminum handle and 8Cr13MoV steel (similar to AUS-8, id est, reasonably stainless, decent toughness, ok-ish edge retention), ball bearing pivot (nice and smooth!)

Ripple - aluminum handle, 8Cr13MoV blade, ball bearing pivot

With these suggestions, it may seem like I'm a shill for CRKT, but I'm not. I'm just a fan of Ken Onion's designs and ergonomics. I also like:

Spyderco Endura - very good stainless steel in a lightweight package, with plenty of handle real estate

Byrd Cara Cara 2 - Spyderco's value brand (basically a cheap Endura with 8Cr13MoV steel instead of the excellent blade steel VG-10)

Spyderco Resilience - big and comfy (G-10 scales with 8Cr13Mov steel), and my daily carry at work

Spyderco Manix 2 - light and medium sized (they also make an XL version), with BD-1 (kinda similar to AUS-8, kinda)

Cold Steel Recon 1 Spear Point - a big knife with lots of grippy G-10 handle space. The CTS XHP steel is the bee's knees, and the Recon 1 is an excellent value, but it may be too expensive as a starting point.

Also, I'm sure some other folks will chime in, too. The guys & gals of /r/knifeclub are pretty knowledgeable and helpful.

Again, my number 1 suggestion is the RAT 1 in D2. It'll be hard to beat interms of construction, ergonomics, and utility.

Happy hunting!

Hi!

I am the same, always bring a flask of whiskey. I also always bring a pipe and tobacco, cob pipes are pretty light.

Anyways, here are my suggestions:

  • Your backpack is very heavy. You might be able to find one on the gear exchange or something so you could potentially do that before the trip. You could also get the Osprey Levity which would save you about 2 lbs. The 3F UL Backpack is also a quality, very inexpensive, UL Backpack that would save you some weight.
  • Lose the sleeping layers. You can use your hiking layers to sleep in as long as you keep them dry.
  • Lose the camp shoes.
  • You can get a flask like this and save a few oz.
  • Camelbaks or hydration bladders in general are really inefficient for carrying water as far as weight goes. Consider just bringing another smart water bottle is you feel like you need more storage.
  • You will need a wind screen for the BRS
  • Your tent is on the heavy side. If you aren't ready to splurge on something else, The 3F UL 1 person tent is a great, fairly light, tent for a great price. Also, I have never found a footprint to be needed. You can also get similar tents on amazon if you are on a time crunch but I can't attest to their quality.
  • First aid kit and hygiene kit is very heavy. For the first aid kit you could probably bring less of each thing to get it down to a little over an ounce. You probably don't need deodorant. For hygiene I only bring a toothbrush and little 15ml eye dropper of Dr. Bronner's soap, I brush and wash with it. Maybe consider the weight difference between bringing glasses and the contact solution? I don't wear either so i'm not sure.
  • If you bring the Dr. Bronner's you don't need hand sanitizer.
  • Looks like you have a heavy knife. There are much lighter options. I really like my Opinel No.6, weighs 0.9oz
  • You could save weight by bringing a Picaridin spray pen.
  • I don't know about you but I have found that I can get 5 days on one full charge from my phone if put in airplane mode and only used for photos and minor navigation. If you were confident and didn't absolutely need your phone you could go without the power bank.

All together these adjustments would save you around 10.4lbs. Hope this helps!

Good luck and have a great trip!
u/mattsworkaccount · 5 pointsr/EDC

Oooh, this is a fun challenge.

  • Knife: Spyderco Dragonfly 2 : $49

This is the most expensive item on my list, but I figure that with knives this is the best small EDC knife you can get for the money. I'm not a fan of large knives for daily carry, and the Dragonfly gets the job done.

  • Watch: Casio Men's Sport Analog Dive Watch : $17

While I initial thought was the F-91W, this watch seems to have far better water-resistance for roughly $7 more. Plus I prefer analog watches.

  • Wallet: Magpul Industries Daka Polymer Wallet : $17

While I've never used one of these personally, why not take the loss of all my stuff as an excuse to pare down how much bullshit I carry in my wallet? Reviews (outside of Amazon) seem pretty good and I'd love to give this thing a shot.

  • Multitool: Atwood Prybaby Chinese Knockoff : $3

I like having one of these kinds of dumb little multitools handy for prying and bottle-opening and other random tasks that I wouldn't want to abuse my knife with. At only $3 it's worth the space in my budget and my keychain. Speaking of keychains...

  • Keychain: Stainless Steel Aircraft Cable Keychain : $2

If you're like me, you often have to add and remove keys and other items from your keychain. Wire/cable keychains are the friggin best for this. I generally prefer the ball-and-socket types rather than the kind that screw closed, but I'm counting my dollars here.

  • Writing Utensil: Pilot G2 0.5mm (12-Pieces) : $10.75 per 12, ~$1 per ea.

I can't stand pens that use caps, and nothing writes as well for me as the Pilot G2. 0.5mm is about as fine a line as I want to get because the 0.38mm ones tend to get a bit scratchy on most paper. And if you'll allow me to count the cost as only a dollar rather than the price of a twelve-pack...

  • Bonus Round: Kingston Digital 32GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive : $9

With a few extra buck open in the budget, I realized that I've had one of these on my keychain for about as long as I can remember, and it pays to have one handy with a copy of your choice of documents, music, and other media. Super handy to keep available at all times.

    --

My total price for these tools puts me at $98, assuming the cost of only one pen. I assumed that I would be able to keep my phone, which provides me with enough illumination that I've never bothered with carrying a dedicated flashlight outside of the colder months when I'm usually wearing a coat. So I didn't bother with choosing one for this challenge. Anyone have any good suggestions for AAA, clicky tail-button flashlights under $20?
u/sirJ69 · 3 pointsr/reloading

So this review on Amazon is what my buying guide will consist of. My apologies for formatting, I am on mobile.

-----
I'm new to reloading, but I shoot a lot so instead of doing what every beginner should and buy a single stage press I saved up a little and got the AP press due to the fact I knew I would use it a lot. But after it came I quickly realized it was far more technical than I expected. I found out there were a lot of parts I still needed and a lot more money that still needed to be spent. I was fine with it bet I knew I would have to save up for a little bit to get it all. But after about 100 hours of reloading YouTube videos and four months I was able to actually start reloading. Wishing I had a guide right off the bat to tell me what I need and why I ended up making one for any other new beginner. So here it is.

Notes: This or any case lube is an absolute need or your rounds will get stuck in the die. This one is cool because you don't have to wipe it off after you deprime and resize so if you have an AP bench like mine you can just keep going.

--Case Trimmer
http://www.amazon.com/Hornady-50140-Camlock-Case-Trimmer/dp/B000PD6QJ6/ref=sr_1_7?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1375561942&sr=1-7&keywords=case+trimmer
$88.99
Notes: This will trim the case down to size. Needed because after firing the case expands

$39.80
Notes: Tells you the specifics of each round. There is a different manual for each projectile. So if you use Hornady bullets you will use their guide, RCBS you you'd use theirs, etc.

This is the stuff I have on me most of the time. I’m a grad student and as you can see, I’ve been lurking here for quite a while. I’m basically an /r/EDC stereotype at this point.

  • Saddleback wallet
  • bullet space pen
  • Nitecore p12 flashlight (winter . . . short days)
  • Ruger SR9c (winter)
  • Sig p938 (summer)
  • Spyderco delica (summer)
  • Benchmade 950-1 rift (winter)
  • carmex
  • phone
  • keys
  • N82 IWB holsters

*Thoughts: I used to carry a FourSevens QT2A (I think?) and it fit in the pocket much better but was obviously much dimmer than the p12. I think i'll go back to a smaller flashlight next winter. I've also carried a Benchmade 707, 275, and several 556 styles. Of all of them I liked the 707 the best but I tend to give away my knives to anyone that takes interest and the 707's price had gone way up when I went to buy another one.

The p938 is, of course, much easier to carry than the SR9c but I can't hit shit beyond 10 feet away and it only holds 6 rounds. Luckily the odds of me needing to hit someone more than 4 feet away are effectively zero. I kind of regret buying the Sig but it'll do for another summer or two. I highly recommend N82 holsters because they are so damn comfortable and secure compared to most others I've tried. The Saddleback ID wallet is amazing if you never need to carry cash, and I've not found a better pen for my pocket than the Fisher space pen. I also like to buy the space pens in bulk so I can give them away to people who take interest.

If you have some really dull edges that havent been sharpened in a long time, pretty much any coarse stone will do, harbor freight has some well priced diamond stones that work well. As far as maintaining edges go, you're gonna want something finer, the bottom of a cermic mug can work well with practice.

As far as stuff you can buy goes, here's some links

worksharp field sharpener: for if you just want to buy one simple tool that can do everything

knock off Spyderco sharp maker: for maintaining undamaged edges, very easy to use, great compliment to a coarse stone for edge repair

Diamond bench stone: these are wonderful for repairing edges, but they remove a ton of metal so they're really useful for reprofiling and repairing, not so much for keeping a kinda sharp edge sharp

Sharpening can be a lot of fun, and there's a million ways to do it. Find some YouTube tutorials (virtuovice is someone I definitely recommend, sweet old Japanese deer Hunter with an enormous wealth of knowledge on water stones). Knowing what you're doing with sandpaper is way better than buying a $80 knife sharpener you don't know how to use well, or don't feel like setting up and putting together.

As before, the Scorpion EVO3A1's a truly epic gun; you should definitely read the website ASG put together for it which explains what's so special about it. I put together a quick list for a friend who was thinking about getting one a while back; here's what was on it:

Status | Product | Cost | Comment
---|---|----|----
Mandatory | ASG CZ Scorpion EVO3A1 | $400 | Perfectly suited for both CQB and field play, this is one of the best AEGs in the world at present.
Optional | ASG Speed Trigger | $30 | Some don't like the plastic trigger supplied with the gun. This CNC-machined-from-billet alternative is tougher and has a shorter pull.
Optional | ASG Steel Spring Guide | $20 | The gun now comes with a steel spring-guide as standard,
Optional | ASG Mainspring (M90/M120) | $15 | ASG offer two strengths of spring for the EVO3A1. One (likely M120, equating to ~400FPS) will be supplied with the gun; you may want to buy the other (M95, equating to ~330FPS) so you're able to play at most common site limits. The spring can be changed in a few seconds with just an Allen key. The EVO3A1 is also compatible with regular AEG springs as long as they are not shorter than the factory ones (this can cause premature engagement).
Mandatory | ASG 75rd Midcap Magazine (x3) | $60 | Three plus the one supplied with the gun for a combat load of four. If you want, you can pick up another three for a total of seven.
Mandatory | Turnigy Nano-Tech 11.1V (3S) 25~50C LiPo Battery (x3) | TBA | The gun has a built-in FCU with MOSFETs, and is designed (and should be) to run on 11.1V LiPo batteries. Although ASG make a slightly larger battery they're more than twice the price and have an inferior Coulomb rating. You'll only need two batteries for a day's play, but for $11 each you may as well pick up a spare.
Mandatory | Turnigy E3 Compact 2S/3S LiPo Balance Charger | $13 | This is a simple balance charger. It won't do clever things like charge to storage voltage, or fast-charge, or discharge, and it will only charge 2S/3S LiPos - but it is very cheap and simple to operate.
Mandatory | Turnigy DLUX LiPo Balancer/Tester | $12 | This balances the individual cells of the battery (preventing one from dropping below the 3.0V minimum) and will tell you the remaining capacity of the entire battery and the voltages of the individual cells (likewise).
| Total: | $553 |

I also included a short list of accessories for how I would personally accessorise the gun - this isn't necessarily the best way to do it and your choices are very much up to you:

Status | Product | Cost | Comment
---|---|----|----
Optional | Xcortech X3300W Advanced BB Control System | $125 | A truly amazing system that incorporates round counter, tracer and chronograph functionality. It will tell you how many rounds are left in the magazine, which is especially useful with the Scorpion's relatively low-capacity mid-caps. Watch it in action here.
Optional | ASG 18-14mm Thread Adapter | $17 | Required to fit most airsoft suppressors (including the X3300W) to the EVO3A1.
Optional | Bushnell TRS-25 | $75 | The best budget red-dot scope on the market and very well-suited to the compact EVO3A1. The TRS-25 Hi-Rise ($90) comes with a tall mount (there are better-looking options available) which will allow you to get a good sight picture even with a poor cheek weld owing to lower-face protection, and will also allow you to mount the X3300W's command/display unit on the top rail without obscuring the sight picture.
Optional | Element M300AA | $40 | A clone of the SureFire M300 Mini Scout Light, modified to use AA (rather than CR123A) batteries.
Optional | Element Tape Switch | $20 | A clone of the SureFire SR-07 rail-mounted tape switch - lets you put the switch where your thumb is, on the other side of the gun to the flashlight.
Optional | MagPul Rail Light Mount (Right) | $30 | Mounts the flashlight up and out of your way, and fits in with the XTMs. Minus the crappy optic, substituting the crap flashlight for the M300AA, and plus the X3300W and rail panels it would look a bit like this.
Optional | MagPul XTM Enhanced Rail Panels | $8 | Protects the rails and makes the gun more comfortable to hold.
Optional | MagPul XTM Hand Stop Kit | $20 | Protects the rails and makes the gun more comfortable to hold.
Optional | ASG Scorpion EVO3A1 Soft Carry Case | $40 | Usually neglected by airsofters, and usually to their cost, this is suitable for travel and storage.

You'd need to add 4x AAA batteries (for the tracer/chronograph unit), 3x AA batteries (for the command/display unit and for the flashlight), polycarbonate lens protectors for the flashlight and the RDS, and you'd be done.

Frankford Arsenal powder trickler. Compact, nice heavy base for stability, even flow. I also have an RCBS trickler and hate it. It's not as stable and the dispensing arm thingy is a weird two piece design that never seem to flow well for me.
GemPro 250 digital scale. Do not waste your money on cheaper options. I don't have experience with the chargemaster type of scale. I like to do things manually.
Redding Imperial Sizing Die Wax. Best stuff there is. Works amazingly well. I also keep a lanolin/alcohol spray lube around for doing large batch work, but Imperial Sizing Wax does a better job.
Hornady Bullet Comparator set. You don't mention what cartridges you're reloading. THIS KIT DOES NOT INCLUDE 6.5mm. There's a 14 insert kit that includes more, or you can buy just the few inserts you need.
Frankford Arsenal bullet puller. I buy what's cheap. These don't last forever. All the hammering eventually cracks the plastic. I've tried several brands and they all break eventually. I usually keep two on hand.

So that covers what you already know you need. Here are some more recommendations.

Hornady 9th Edition. I use this more than all my other manuals combined. I shoot a lot of Hornady bullets, though. If you already have a favorite bullet brand, you should buy that brand's manual.

Lyman Shooters Check Weights. I use these every single time I reload. I like knowing that my scale isn't lying to me. Digital scales can be finicky sometimes! These are worth every penny.

Hornady Headspace Comparator set. This is a lot like the bullet comparator set, except that it measure to the shoulder of the case instead of the ogive of the bullet. If you're planning on monitoring the amount you're bumping your shoulders during resizing, this is what you need.

Lyman Case Prep Multi-Tool. The chamfer tool that came with your kit will do the job, but this Lyman multi tool is my preferred method. It also comes with primer pocket scrapers that will be useful, and primer pocket reamers you should throw away and never use.

RCBS Uniflow Powder Baffle. This will help your uniflow powder measure throw more consistent charges.

RCBS Advanced Powder Measure Stand. If you're going to do a permanent installation of your powder measure on your bench, you will want this stand. Its price is absurd, but it's a great stand.

RCBS Universal case loading block. Your kit came with one, but you need at least one more.

What is your plan for cleaning brass? Wet tumbling with steel pins is the way to go. I have the Frankford Arsenal unit. It's huge and noisy. If I had it to do over I would purchase the dual drum tumbler from Harbor Freight and buy steel pins from Amazon.

Redding dies don't come with shellholders. Did you remember to get one?

What is your plan for case trimming? You don't mention what you're reloading. The cheapest option, which is actually my preferred method, is the Lee case length gauge and shellholders with their cutter and lock studs.

There are some additional case prep tools, but they would depend on what you're doing. If you are dealing with brass that has military crimps, you'll need tools to deal with that. There are primer pocket brushes, primer pocket uniformers, flash hole deburring tools, and a million other little things.

That's all that's coming to mind right now. I'm sure I missed some stuff.

u/zxj4k3xz · 6 pointsr/airsoft

So you want a light DMR or LMG? I'm not sure that exists. I mean, the whole point of an LMG is that it's big and heavy, and DMRs are generally just longer rifles.

What is your budget? the ASG Evo Scorpion would be great for her. Fantastic range to back up your sniper, but light weight and small. The only problem is, it's expensive. $400 for the gun itself.

Here is u/pure_silver's list of suggested and required parts for it.

It can be changed in a few seconds with just an Allen key. I can't see a US retailer stocking these - contact /u/actionsportgames_bob to see if he knows someone who does.
Mandatory | ASG Mainspring (M90/M120) | $15 | The EVO3A1 uses proprietary springs. Lol, do you mean S&W? Been in the same boat myself, and those are decent knives. Dig the bigger handles, definitely more ergonomic if you have bigger hands. Higher grades of steel help, but if it's a daily, things are going to wear down regardless. Got a cheap Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener a while back that does a pretty good job of sharpening the tips when using the ceramic rod. Saw it suggested on a video for sharpening recurve blades, and it's been pretty slick. Otherwise, since my current main is more of a straight blade, have just been using a sharpening stone when rarely needed)

Been using this as my every day carry for a while now. Not as rugged, and handle could be a tad bigger, but it can get razor sharp and stay that way, doesn't corrode quickly, and once dull, sharpens super easily (Sandvik 14C28N steel, great for light to moderate usage without a ton of coarse cutting).

If I know I'm going to be cutting more abrasive things like rope, this is my backup. S30V steel doesn't hold a razor sharp edge as long (14C28N is designed to have maximized sharpness) but it's effective cutting edge lasts forever (less wear than 14C28N for abrasive cuts, but also a bit tougher to sharpen).

P.S. I promise I'm not a Kershaw rep, just found two that I've actually stuck with for a long time!

u/DudeManFoo · 1 pointr/Cooking

I have a $5 pairing knife that takes an edge well but looses it fast. I have a $25 stamped wusthof that takes an edge well and keeps it pretty good. I just bought my little brothers (2 of them) Misen chefs knives (a kickstarter thing) and they are pretty dang nice.

I can sharpen an axe to where I can shave with it by hand. Showing off is all that is good for. I have used water stones, diamond, the top of a car window, and even a plain ole rock. But once a month or so, I sharpen them with on this.

But every day, I hone them with one of these I bought at goodwill.

My advice to anyone is learn to use and sharpen the tool before geeking out on expensive stuff. Knowledge and practice will bring you a lot more satisfaction. I would rather hear a great guitarist on a crap guitar than a crap guitarist on a great guitar.

u/Rocket_Puppy · 2 pointsr/EDC

What do you use the Skeletool most for?

If you use the knife on it constantly and daily, then yeah, get a good knife. If the stuff that you do cut makes you nervous with the Skeletool then definitely get a dedicated knife.

If you use the bit driver or pliers on the Skeletool the most then you probably don't need to carry a dedicated knife.

Give the Sage 5 a good look as well if you are considering the Para3. I'd also strongly recommend finding a Spyderco/Benchmade/Zero Tolerance dealer and fondling a bunch of knives before making a decision on which knife to buy.

If you have never carried a dedicated knife before it would be a good idea to buy a cheaper knife or two before spending $100+ on a knife.

Try some under $30 knives, pick one that looks like something you would like to carry, and pick something that is dang near the polar opposite. It will let you know what you like in a knife much cheaper. Differences in blade size, blade shape, handle shape and how they are used might change your opinion on what you think you need in a knife after using a dedicated knife for awhile. After that you can make a truly informed decision on a high-end knife.

> I'm looking for a good cleaning kit and set of tools for this gun.

For a starter kit, i'd recommend something like this setup:

  • Otis Cleaning Kit
  • 6" Q-Tips - Great for the hard to reach spots a regular short Q-Tip can't reach.
  • TekMat - Only cleaning mat brand i'll go with, durable, and solid for the price.
  • CLP - Whatever you prefer, everyone has something they like/prefer. For now, i've been using RandCLP to clean my guns for the last year, and some ALG Go-Juice as my lube.
  • Brushes - I don't use these as often as some do, most use them for stuff like scrubbing their BCG's. I only clean my AR's after a high round count, so i use mine maybe once a month when i clean my regular phosphate BCG's.
  • Shop Towels - I use the shit out of these. After shooting suppressed i gave up on being real anal-retentive about cleaning, so i just wipe down parts (BCG, uppers, CH, etc) with a shop towel and re-lube where needed. I only do a detailed cleaning maybe 1-2 a year.
  • AR Tool - Despite Tapco stuff usually being Chinese junk, their AR tool is pretty tip-top, i've had it for about 3.5 years now and used it a lot, it's held up wonderfully.

I use a kit i put together myself for cleaning my handguns, rifles, shotgun, etc, for cleaning. My guns get cleaned differently, which gun it is dictates how it'll get clean and how often.

Okay, here's my recommended loadout for you: (using your $1k budget)

Gun: Tokyo Marui Recoil Shock M4 SOCOM $460 Test firing video of gun

And yes, despite all the Tokyo Marui stigma that all their electric guns are cheap plastic, the new ones (since 2009) are made of metal.

Mags x3-5 $75-$125

Battery and Charger

Most Tokyo Marui guns hold their values really well, and they perform well too. Most guns, when you open the box, they instantly lose 1/3 of their value from you just touching it. But Tokyo Marui guns have a reputation of being reliable and pretty rare outside of Japan, so they hold their values much better, usually at 80% of original, or sometimes if you find the right buyer it'll hold 100% of their value. Not to mention they perform very good and have superb accuracy right out of the box. The Socom M4 also has a unique bolt lock (like the Systema PTW) and a simulated recoil function that provides feedback when you shoot it. Downside to this gun is that you need to buy special magazines for the gun to feed, or buy an adapter. So if you somehow don't like Airsoft, then you can resell this gun for basically MSRP.

Shirt: Voodoo Tactical Combat shirt $30 Best combat shirt, very breathable, has zippers to vent armpits as well.

Plate Carrier: Shellback Tactical Banshee plate carrier $130 Pretty much a real steel plate carrier, one of the best you can buy, and is not that bulky for better mobility.

Dump pouch: Any dump pouch will do, $15

Mag pouches: I use a condor one $20 (because I'm cheap) but I've tried a HSGI Taco pouch $30 each and they're pretty good... But pretty expensive

Eye Protection: If you play outdoors and want goggles, I can't really give you a recommendation here, but I play indoors and I use a full facemask the dye i4. It fits really well to your face, is low profile, and never fogs.

I would use the remaining money on gun equipment to make to make it more "OPERATORZ"

G&P red dot sight Eotech 551 clone $60

Magpul PTS Handguards $20

Magpul MOE vertical Grip $20 will only work with the MOE hand guards above

I've got a cheap sheffield and a cheap Winchester multitool, and a nice but very old Leatherman that doesn't open properly because I tried to cut wire that was WAY too thick with it and warped the cutters.

Now that I've got a new flashlight on my belt, I'm considering adding another multi tool. Not much room left in my pockets. Most days I could add a small multitool with the Burts Bees and leave the lighter home, but some days my phone has to join that pocket depending on the pants, or maybe a disc golf mini marker if I'm out playing.

So I'm pretty sure I want a leatherman, but 1) I don't know what my best value tool is (I wanted the Wave about 5 or 6 years ago and never bought it) and 2) I'm a little disappointed they don't come with a leather pouch any more. Wal-Mart has them locked up and in a clamshell so I can't really get them out to play with them.

What do you recommend, /r/EDC?

Here's the rest of my EDC:

Wallet - Dyno Mighty - Mighty Wallet - Wealth of Knowledge

Knife - Byrd Cara Cara 2

Flashlight (On Belt) - Nitecore P12 - 2015 Version

Pistol - Kahr CW9

IWB Holster (not pictured) - Comp-Tac Infidel

Spare Mag Pouch for Pocket - Desantis Mag-Packer

Phone / Camera - HTC One M8

I have this knife. I carry it every day, and use it a whole lot more than I ever thought I would. Never for self-defense, but it does provide a small bit of peace of mind just in case.

There's a few things I like about it:

It's cheap!

It's small and very well made.

It flips open like a switchblade, but isn't considered one. It also makes a cool sound when you do that.

It holds a sharp edge

The pocket clips don't wear out.

Sharpens nicely

You can carry a pocketknife anywhere in Oregon. It's no big deal whatsoever. Check out Oregon's Knife Laws here. Oregon is a super lenient state when it comes to knife laws.

Enjoy!

u/Cemeterystoneman · 3 pointsr/gundeals

This totally will be accurate enough (I don't have this particular model) but it weighs each load so you can see what you're charging before you actually do - but can potentially slow you down as it weighs each load while dispensing (still worth it though and faster than a balance scale)

Also if you're looking for tips - if you're shooting 9mm use a 147gr bullet if you can or at least anything heavier than 115gr, the recoil will be more "back and towards you" rather than upwards - x-treme bullets are pretty great and one of the more inexpensive options but if you can find pulled bullets (not necessarily ideal but good enough for practice at least) they will be even cheaper - ammoseek has parameters you can set for reloading supplies. You'll also need a hand priming tool (wait for a sale, it does come down in price) - or a table top version, and a press of some kind (don't be afraid to look for used to save money, I'm rocking an RCBS thats older than I am but works great and am currently doing 4000 556 loads through it. - also consider what kind of brass you're going to be reloading, if its military crimped you're going to need either a primer pocket swagger or a cutter to chamfer the primer pocket. There are also case prep machines that are electric and have these tools as well as others especially if you're going to be doing a lot of rifle rounds. Buy a reloading manual thats encompassing, you can check used bookstores - you can also find load data online but that can be hit or miss.

You'll find you won't save any money but will be able to shoot more for the same amount - more bang for your buck.

u/mpak87 · 2 pointsr/CampingGear

Awesome advice, all of the above models would be quite suitable. For pure woods use, something with a brighter color would probably do quite well for you. But I'm going to have to stick my neck out for some downvotes as well by disagreeing with the half-serration comment. I don't see it as "tactical," at all. I tend to prefer a half-serrated blade. I like serrations for cutting things like rope, handfuls of plastic sheeting, etc. If you just want a knife for the woods, you might not worry about it. I have knives that I carry with both types of edge, but I usually gravitate back to the half-serration. My personal every day carry is an older generation of Spyderco Endura which has a 4" blade, but is very light, well made, and strong. They make a 3" version called the Delica which I carried a lot when I was younger. You can get a perfectly serviceable knife for a lot less, but I've been carrying these for almost 20 years, and my current one has been through a hell that no knife deserves. They make them with plain edges as well, I've had them, but I don't tend to like them as much. Good luck, and I feel like pretty much everyone should have a knife. You just never know when it might be useful.

  • ~$7-8 Sanrenmu 7010/710 - You can find these at Gearbest for cheap as hell when they have sales but they're absolutely $30 worth of knife
  • ~$10-20 Opinel no.6-12 - Depends on blade size/steel/handle wood. #6 is under 3in blade if that kind of thing matters.
  • ~$20 CRKT Drifter
  • ~$20 Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara2
  • ~$20-25 Ontario Rat II or Rat I
  • ~$30 Victorinox Cadet Alox
  • ~$30 Kershaw Cryo
  • ~$35 CRKT Ripple
  • ~$35 Spyderco Persistence
  • ~$40 Kershaw Skyline - Often on sale in the ~$30 range
  • ~$40 Kershaw Leek - Same sales as with the Skyline \^^

Honorable Mention: Case knives. Traditional lockbacks. Hard as nails and pretty to boot. True pocket knives. Your grandfather (possibly great grandfather) had one. Good stuff the lot of them. $25-50 will get you a legacy knife that you can carry and use and then pass to your kid.

You don't need to spend $200 to get a quality, durable, reliable knife. I've owned all of these knives at one time or another and loved every one of them. Sure they needed sharpening more often and sometimes something a little more drastic (Sanrenmus are often cheaper to replace than fix) but the value is insane. Plus, lets face facts; we're much more likely to break out our Cadet when we get box duty than our Sebenza.

Knife enthusiasts (brothers) if there's a weighed and measured cheapo that I forgot, let me know.
u/sixcharlie · 3 pointsr/reloading

It does add up quick but it will stabilize. I'm very new to this myself and after getting little things like a kinetic bullet puller you eventually get all the things you need. By the way, I don't bother with the collets that came with it, I just use the appropriate shell plate for the cartridge.

I'm loading three cartridges now (.270 Win, .223 and .45 ACP) and now only need primers, powder and projectiles to reload. To start loading a new cartridge, I'd also need dies, shell plates (if I don't already have it in a kit), and the three Ps.

Other things on my wish list are a powered case prep station (my hands wear out when dealing with crimped primers) and I see why higher end presses have a handle bar instead of the palm ball.

Anyway, sorry to ramble there, it sure feels good to make your first hand load, and feels even better to shoot. Congrats!

To tag along with your friends who already have gear, I assume you can share a tent so I'll skip shelter. Also my links are to stuff I like, but there are tons of options in each category.

  • toiletries (TP, toothbrush, toothpaste, towel, chapstick, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, campsoap, in small containers)
  • maybe some utility cord and map and compass if you know how to use one

That, or something like it, should pretty much cover you from June thru Sept in northern CA, assuming you can snag a spot in some else's tent and you're sharing bear canister space for food storage (when backpacking places that require it).

$150 is plenty of budget for a good knife. This one is just slightly over that budget but will last you the rest of your life. It's kind of my dream survival knife.

The Fallkniven F1 is very popular as well and right in your price range.

Currently I use this knife which is also very good.

If you want to go a little less expensive still, Becker makes some good ones such as the Bk16. I know the Becker doesn't look anything like "hand made", but I have the BK2- I used paint remover to take the black coating off the blade, replaced the plastic handles with micarta and stained it to look more like wood, and built a leather sheath for it. It's a beautiful knife now. Too bad it's so goddamn heavy.

You could also go with something like the Mora bushcraft. I have that one also, very decent knife.

You could even just get a regular Mora or a Condor bushlore which are even more economical options.

u/SpareiChan · 3 pointsr/reloading

first of all

Secondly, I assume you mean this one, the lee cast iron turret is a great press and it will work for most applications, If you need to do things not involving the turret (like decapping of w/e) you can just pull the index rod out(it just pops out when you take the dies out) and it won't spin anymore.

For tumbler I can say wet tumbling is best but not feasable for everyone and walnut tumbling works fine. The frankfort arsenal kit is good choice.

Lee dies and hand trimmers are cheap and work good too. I wouldn't worry about a trimmer for 40 or 9 but get one for sure for 223 and 30-06. cutter + Insert

there's some more basics like decent case lube and components themselves but it's a step in the right direction.

EDIT
***
additional recommended things would be a kinetic bullet puller, digital scale, and calipers.

u/YouMadeMeDumber · 2 pointsr/knives

There are some aesthetically pleasing knives here, but I would encourage you to look into some things with a bit more functionality. While any of these may appear to function well, a properly made knife will treat you much better in the long run.

This Kershaw is inexpensive, has good steel characteristics and is well assembled. I encourage you to get one or possibly something recommended in the knife buying guide and compare to some of the knives in your collection.

u/eskimoexplosion · 3 pointsr/guns

If you're planning on spending more than $150 just save your money and save up for a premium optic like an Aimpoint, EOTech, Leupold, or Trijicon. If you're looking in the 100-150 range, Holosun makes a great solar/battery powered red dot that holds zero well and has a 30-50k hour battery life(when it's actually in battery mode). If you're looking for a more traditional optic, Bushnell and Nikon have good 1-4x optics. If you're looking for more magnification a Leupold
is within your reach. Vortex has strong offerings in both red dots and traditional optics if you're willing to spend a just bit more. If you're looking in the 50-150 range I'd look into a TRS-25 or Primary Arms for a red dot. For a traditional scope i'd stick with a fixed power optic like this Bushnell, you're going to be hard pressed to find a decent magnified optic with good glass in this price range, fixed power scopes are simpler in construction and offer at least better durability but i'd consider sticking to a non magnified optic under the $100 range. If you're trying to spend even less than $50 there is apparently a very well made $20 Fieldsport which is worth a search on youtube. I wouldn't consider anything magnified under $50 but this is a good range for a cool carry handle with elevation adjustment and retro look. Shooting irons can be more fun than using optics sometimes.

u/ahorribleidea · 5 pointsr/reloading

I would recommend upgrading to a nice digital scale, it will make things easier.

Maybe get a few of these if you haven't yet thought about how you're going to store your loaded ammo.

I have that same tumbler, works great. I would also suggest a separator for afterwords. Some brass polish is nice too.

I think that kit comes with a hand trimmer, but I would recommend a larger one, your hands will thank you.

I went with a Lyman kit for my starter set, and while it's a lot more expensive than yours, I've been very pleased with it.

When you start doing 223 you'll also want a case length trimmer. This one works pretty well for me.

u/Taboggan · 2 pointsr/knifeclub

Well, I prefer a lighter EDC, so i'd recommend the

  • Kershaw Skyline

This one is a very nice EDC for most people who use a knife for lighter tasks such as box cutting, opening packages and the like. I would not recommend this for someone who tends to use their knives for "heavier duty" tasks.

  • Kershaw Leek

Pretty much the same recommendation criteria as the Skyline, but this knife is both spring assisted, and has a more "delicate" point.

  • Spyderco Delica

Probably one of the most recommended knives for someone who wants an overall solid EDC at the price point with a lot of versatility and good overall durability. I own one myself, and this one is great for EDC.

  • Ontario RAT 2

The Ontario knife company really hit it out of the park with the RAT series, the Ontario RAT model II is a better choice for EDC over the RAT model I, mainly because the knife is a bit smaller putting it at about 2.75" blade and less "intimidating" for someone who needs for EDC.

  • ESEE Izula

I really like the Izula as a fixed blade EDC knife, it's a fucking tank and you can be sure you can rely on it everywhere, but it does lose some versatility and convenience because it isn't a folder.

    --------------------------------------------------

Please keep in mind that these are just my suggestions and reviews, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me anything.

That is a very good range, great price point for awesome hunting knives.

Here’s a couple all purpose bushcraft/outdoors knives:

The Benchmade Buschraft: Micarta scales and a very nice leather sheath put it at $200 even. Benchmade is made in the US and is very well known for their high quality and their great warranties. I just bought a Crooked River and am enamored by it.

https://www.amazon.com/Benchmade-162-Bushcrafter-Drop-Point/dp/B00B0E1MB6/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549089167&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=benchmade%2Bbushcraft&dpPl=1&dpID=41uGBLFBQNL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1

Next up is the Fallkniven F1. It’s got a composite rubber handle but is still full tang. Made out of VG10 which means high rust resistance, great for bloodwork in the cold when you don’t have a lot of time to clean it. This brand is out of Sweden and those dudes know their outdoors gear. I could go on and on about them but there’s not much more needed to be said. At $115 you’re getting an incredible knife for a hell of a price.

https://www.amazon.com/Fallkniven-F1-Thermorun-Handle-Sheath/dp/B001JA9Y66/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549089232&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=fallkniven&dpPl=1&dpID=41BlkNY8VfL&ref=plSrch

Now look at the Esee 6P, this is a good example of everything a knife should be and no more. Its 1095 high carbon steel so the implication would be to keep it cleaned and oiled, but there is a DLC (diamond like carbon coating) so it will keep the rust at bay until it wears off over time. $116 is a modest price, especially for the size of this particular knife.

https://www.amazon.com/ESEE-Desert-Molded-Polymer-Sheath/dp/B0049TYBL2/ref=pd_aw_sim_468_1/147-9912666-5096041?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0049TYBL2&pd_rd_r=35b4fb85-26b5-11e9-a2ee-7323802ef2ad&pd_rd_w=EV1gz&pd_rd_wg=WIYnq&pf_rd_p=469620d9-3e90-496d-9dc8-b19f900ba5fe&pf_rd_r=VEHBMYRN110K86ZGZE9G&psc=1&refRID=VEHBMYRN110K86ZGZE9G

That being said I don’t know a great deal of “brand name” filet knives but what I can assure you of is that there is no more a reliable product than a Morakniv. They literally have a knife for every job, and they’re all incredibly robust and utilitarian. Don’t let the low price point fool you, they are worth much more than the company charges. These are made of 12c27n sandvik steel, again in Sweden. The steel is good stuff, nothing glamorous but still a step above 440c. They have awesome belt clips that are just as simple as can be and I couldn’t personally suggest a whole line of knives other than Morakniv.

This seems like a good deal to get the majority of what someone would need right off the bat to start reloading (but it doesnt come with a case trimmer....there are cheaper models out there) even so though you'll probably start to upgrade parts very quickly (if not immediately) from a better hand prep tool that would also allow you to remove military crimps as well as chamfur and deburr (and then maybe eventually to a prep centerif you start reloading a lot)

And so on, so it really depends if someone is going to jump in with both feet it may be cheaper for them to buy the parts seperately but if youre just looking to do a little casually or try it out this sounds totally worth it. It is addictive and personally im halfway through case prepping 4000 556 cases which isnt the easiest on a single stage press but will save me several hundred dollars over purchasing from the factory (as well as the ability to tune loads for each rifle)

There are reloading deals out there for materials, but press kits like this will save some people money but cost others 'more' (as they will probably upgrade certain things) still great to get into

Check out the Krytac forum for technical discussions on Krytac products.

I've got my FDE Krytac LVOA-C on the way, but I did order two batteries from Hobby King:

2000mah 2S 15~25C LiPo (7.4V)

2000mah 3S 15~25C LiPo (11.1v)

Researching on the Krytac forum, if you have a US-market Krytac AEG, you should be fine using a 11.1v. However, if you are in Europe, you may have better results with the 7.4v. My friend received his US-market LVOA-C last week and the 11.1v worked great.

I'd also recommend this Tenergy charger: http://amzn.com/B004FGWY54
I've got a more involved LiPo fast charger, but the Tenergy is a simple balance charger that'll do the job just fine. Also, don't forget to get a Kevlar lipo bag for safety!

If I'm going to work, I roll up my hi-vis vest and stuff it into my helmet with my gloves and put it in a locker at work. Out in public, I lock my helmet to my passenger peg with a pistol bore lock. Forgot what video I watched that someone used it, but it's been a life changer not having to carry a helmet around or leaving it unsecured on the bike. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MJ2Z322/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YW2BzbK65F9WK

Also, I'd recommend some earplugs if you don't want to listen to music or if you're making a short trip somewhere. These are what I use: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001V2SS9G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_pV2BzbM5W9MEA

If you do want to listen to music, a pair of Shure 215's are great if you don't want a communicator. They're considered monitors, so they have passive noise canceling and foam eartips to block outside noise. Plus they sound amazing, so when you're not on the bike, you have some quality headphones to listen to music with. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004PNZFZ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_602BzbPVGC44Q

Those three things have made riding and commuting more enjoyable. And, they all fit in a small 5.11 pouch I have attached to my battery cover. Hope all this helps.

u/rsynv5 · 3 pointsr/wildwhittlers

A Morakniv Classic is a pretty great choice. Comfortable grip, well made, cheap. You just have to be aware that it is carbon steel, so it will rust if you leave it wet, and the sheath it comes in is kinda crappy. If you don't mind those two things, a mora would be great for you. If you'd rather a folding knife, the other one I can recommend is an Opinel. While that particular knife is carbon steel, you can get the Opinel in stainless as well, and it has pretty much all the same advantages of a Mora.

All that being said, so long as your Swiss Army knife is sharp, and you start on an easy bit of wood, soft, no knots, straight grain, you probably don't need a new knife.

u/PapaShane · 1 pointr/knives

For ~$30, get one of the "high-end" Moras. I have this one, it's very sharp, very comfortable, nice and light, and great for camp chores like food prep, whittling, cutting cord, etc.
For ~$120-$150, get a Fallkniven. The F1 model is smaller and cheaper, the S1 is a bit bigger, and I think the A1 is the biggest. They're fantastic; great steel, thick but not too thick blade, exposed tang, unbreakable handle. I took my Mora and my Fallkniven camping with me a few weekends ago. The Fallkniven was used to baton through dead wood to make firewood, the Mora was used for cooking and lighter chores. Neither one shows any wear, though they were both used vigorously. And they're both still sharp as hell.
Those are the two that I can personally recommend, and frankly I'm surprised that Fallkniven hasn't come up more here if you're willing to spend upwards of $100 on a knife. If you need to stick to a budget, then a Mora will never let you down. The ESEEs also have a great reputation and people around here love them, so you can't go wrong with those either, I just prefer the style of Fallkniven more than ESEE. One thing that everyone will agree on is to stay away from Gerber if you want a good, dependable blade.

My hands are 18.3cm. I use a claw grip gaming and a fingertip/claw grip in Windows. I use the Mionix Castor on SteelSeries 9HD and really like it. I've tried a lot of mice. I don't own a Deathadder, so I don't know what kind of latency the left and right clicks have. The Mionix Castor has a couple extra ms in left/right click latency. I got used to it and don't really have an issue with it, but other people don't like it. If you think this is going to be an issue, I recommend checking out the Zowie EC2-A. I haven't tried this mouse, but I know the dimensions and shape are just about perfect for our hand size and claw grip usage. It doesn't have that rubber side grip like the deathadder or Castor, but you can use this grip tape on the sides. I put this tape on the Roccat Kone Pure, SteelSeries Sensei, and G303 when I was testing them. It works perfectly.

LOL, i just bought BOTH of these knives like a month ago(drunk amazon shopping can be dangerous). I thought i would like the brawler better and the blade design does make it better for some stuff i do at work, but it took me all of 2 days to fall for the cryo as my preferred EDC. It feels more solid in my hand, its a bit shorter, and its thinner. The clip on it lets it sit lower in your pocket as well. As someone who is in and of their pockets a good bit the thickness is actually a big plus.

These knives were purchased to replace a Kershaw Clash that i lost and i would definitely recommend looking into that one as well if you havent already, i really liked it but just wanted to get something different.

I use Tekmat's bench mats - originally intended for cleaning long guns as it has exploded views of the guns, but I use one at work and one at home- I LOVE them. They're cheaper than the computer branded stuff (corsair and razer carry them but for a much higher price) at around $20-22 average. Way more than enough space for keyboard, mouse and HOTAS setup to all fit comfortably on it.

https://www.amazon.com/Tenergy-Cells-Li-PO-Balance-Charger/dp/B004FGWY54/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1510907253&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=airsoft+lipo+charger&psc=1

also with that battery it will only work if your gun is front wired (the plug for the battery is in your handguard) if its rear wired it wont work because you need the battery in the buffer tube.

as far as the gun sack you can pick up a hard rifle case at walmart for under 25$ and it will keep your rifle safe and you can lock it with padlocks if you'd like

I also really wouldn't recommend a paintball mask either cause they usually fog unless you get a really nice one like a dye i4/i5. they are also almost impossible to aim down sights with. I use arena flak jaks as I just pop out the vents and they never fog and you can get cheap replacement lens on ebay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Arena-Flakjak-Tactical-Eye-Protective-Goggles-Tan-Airsoft-Paintball-Tactical-New/253221912379?epid=1001535811&hash=item3af533bf3b:g:sNEAAOSwCmNZxI2I

others recommend the pyramix goggles as they are lower profile but I just find it easy for them to move off my eyes by just moving facial muscles

https://www.amazon.com/Pyramex-I-Force-Sporty-Anti-Fog-Goggle/dp/B006WPSDXS/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1510907577&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=pyramix+i+force

with those if you want lower face protection most people recommend the one tigris as it makes it easy to aim down your sights

https://www.amazon.com/OneTigris-Comfortable-Adjustable-Protective-Available/dp/B01MTS1611/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1510907635&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=one+tigris+mesh+mask&psc=1

bamf mags I've heard many different things on them so i guess it just depends on your gun if they fit they will be good if not kwa k120s, g&p skullfrog, and pts epm are all good mid caps and those go in order from least to most expensive

I had in mind this Kershaw 1605CKTST since I recently got myself a similar kershaw and I am very pleased with it.

So I kept shopping around and Buck seems decent but the blade is small at 2 1/2 inches. But that seems like it would perfect for my dad appart from the blade lenght.

Is Knifecenter.com a good place to buy. I Found a Gerber Tanto style that seems to be perfect. Opinions ?

I got flamed and downvoted when I tried posting this before, but I will try again.

I got the new Rhinoshield bumper and REALLY like it with the exception that it slips easily out of my hand when trying to pull it out of my pocket.

I found this grip tape on Amazon and applied a thin strip of it along the "grip spots" on the bumper and now it is perfect. You cannot even tell that it is not built into the bumper. They should add one with extra grip.

I highly recommend these ear plugs.

They don't muffle sounds and only lower the volume once it gets to harmful volume levels. You can hear safe volumes about 90% as clearly as normal.

They're reusable and come with a case. They're very easy to put in. They fit great under a helmet. And they're inexpensive especially when compared to custom molded earplugs.

I wear them while riding and at music concerts. They work great.

u/ARKnife · 1 pointr/knives

Buck 119 Special is a great option.

Made for hunting but will be ok for fishing and EDC as well.

Classic shape, good quality, excellent value, made in the US.

u/patheticguy12 · 3 pointsr/ar15

I found your charging handle for almost $10 cheaper. You could cut the cost of the charging handle significantly by getting a one-handed one. I used the exact same lower build kit for my first AR. The lower build kit does not come with any tools. You're going to need some tools, such as a Castle Nut Wrench and a punch set

This is kind of optional, but you're going to need a spacer if you want to use iron sights (or else the iron sights will be blocked by the red dot sight. The spacer also helps a great deal is making it more comfortable, so your head isn't awkwardly tilted, obviously this will depend on your eye height.

Don't get discouraged if this seems confusing, if all else fails, watch an ar15 building tutorial and everything will be much clearer. Here's another tutorial. Good luck.

u/ANAL_PLUNDERING · 11 pointsr/knives

No problem.

Kershaw Scallion (Small, assisted opening, steel is not so great)

Kershaw Skyline (good size, G10, nice blade shape, steel can get to a crazy level of sharpness)

Kershaw OSO Sweet (pretty cool assisted opener, great price there on amazon)

Spyderco Tenacious (same decent steel on the OSO Sweet and Byrd, good G10, good blade shape, Spyderco quality, great value)

Byrd Cara2 (Great value, overseas production brings prices way down on all Byrd knives)

Here is one above your price range

And one below your price range

If you want a good budget fixed magnification optic, I really like Primary Arms stuff - their prism scopes run around $250-300 and are tough as nails with clever BDC/ranging reticles and pretty good glass.

For budget red dots I like PA, Holosun and Vortex.

If you're just looking for a decent cheap RDS that'll get you shooting and hold zero, the Bushnell TRS-25 can be had for $50 or so and will serve just fine. Add a UTG riser (absolute cowitness / lower 1/3 cowitness) for under $10 and you're in business.

Quick suggestions:

CRKT SS Eros ($37 on amazon, neat flipper, light, but tiny)

Spyderco Dragonfly 2 ($48 on amazon, the popular "little big knife" option, comes in other flavors, I prefer the Cat though)

Spyderco Cat ($41 on amazon, often my choice for Chicago or Boston carry, at least when I'm not carrying a Tuff Lite)

. . . and one more that's far superior to the other three in utility, but that is perhaps less easy on the eyes:

Cold Steel Tuff Lite ($29 on amazon)

If you like kershaw you can get a blur with S30v steel for around 65$ on amazon if you still want a kershaw. I've never been too impresed with them since I find their build quality to be lacking. They seem to have an excessive amount of blade play and use average quality steels in most of their knives. The a premium steel that can hold a razor sharp working edge. The spyderco delica/endura line is also a great knife. They have full flat ground blades that come razor sharp from the factory with absolutlely no blade play. I personally carry a green delica as one of my edc knives. The dragonfly is also great if you want a knife that dissapears on your person. it is a featherweight knife, that cuts and handles like a much larger knife.

If you are looking for a knife that can take an absolutely harsh beating, I would have to reccomend an Ontario RAT 1 or 2 depending on you size preference. They are a bit heavy in hand compared to other knives it size, but perform just as good as any of my spydercos. It is also on the cheaper side at around 25$.

The benchmades are also a good choice, but I would also reccomend the benchmade mini-presidio.

Anyways, I thought I might as well just post some links to them:

I would second the Delica recommendation. Amazon has a Delica 4 ffg in Purple that would do nicely. The Dragonfly 2 in a very dark green frn and a yellow H1 salt frn would be great as well. Great gift idea man!

u/ElectricLamp · 2 pointsr/knives

They're both in 8cr13mov and people really underestimate them for it. It's actually a very easily maintained steel but watch out for the Clash and its bead blasted finish; it'll rust on you easily. The Freefall is stonewashed so you won't have that problem.

Honestly I'd probably prefer a [kershaw chill](http://www.amazon.ca/Kershaw-3410-Chill-Pocket-Knife/dp/B002IVHQ5Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398139713&sr=8-1&keywords=kershaw+chill] in that range for its blade geometry. It's mostly flat ground and it will make for noticeably better slicing capability. (even though it is also bead blasted)

Otherwise it'd be good to pony up ten more bucks and get a Rat II

u/DBags18x · 12 pointsr/guns

Honestly I would upgrade your red dot. For pretty cheap, you can get a bushnell TRS-25 with a riser (Like $60-$100) and those are really awesome for the money. > You sound like you think this is my first knife I have other knives and I like this one also. I don't think I got ripped off. lol it was only 20 bucks and for 20 it is a pretty sturdy well made knife.

-OP

>I've cut down 2 small trees with this knife and went through a whole winter chopping ice from my gutters and shutters. For $20 you will not find as heavy duty a blade as this.

-Comment on this thread

There are several other 20$ knives that are ridiculously great values. And some of them are folders too, meaning the lock mechanism must be constructed right, or they can hurt the user.

Ka Bar Dozier

Byrd Cara Cara 2

If 20$ can give you a well-constructed folder that won't fail on you, 20$ can get you a nice fixed blade with a good heat treat.

Sure it may not have the same edge retention as a Becker or Izula because of the steel used, but keep in mind fixed blades are typically used with more force than folders are. Batoning, chopping off branches, etc, are more reliant on the user's force than the actual sharpness of the blade.

...And it's still a fixed blade. A piece of steel with handles attached. Unlike folders, there's no mechanical parts to fail. This makes it a very strong design in general. Even though it won't have the same fit and finish as a Becker, it will still have more durability than any folder. But you shouldn't be running these things over with 18-wheelers. It's way more than adequate, if you know to respect the thing.

A full tang fixed blade for 20$ is a steal.

u/TwoStepsFromThursday · 3 pointsr/knives

If you want something that's high quality and will last forever, a great option is a Benchmade Saddle Mountain Skinner The S30V steel is uses is great for keeping an edge of a long time, and it's backed by a lifetime warranty. It's also made in the US, which is always nice.

Another great option for very tough, no-frills knives is a Swedish company known as Fallkniven. They make fantastic hunting and survival knives. Their A1 model is their most well-known, but I prefer the smaller F1 series It's a fair bit lighter and easier to carry.

you need dies for the caliber that you are reloading.

for some reason i have 2 sets of .223 dies. i know i purchased one, i'm not sure if the other came with the kit.

i purchased a 2" bench top cut off saw [$32]

a jig to cut my cases [$13] 300blk

a case length guage [$10] 300blk

ammo loading tray [$7]

dies [$39] for each caliber

digital caliper [$16]

frankford scale [$32]

frankford bullet puller [$16]

tumber kit [$75]

i spent a good month or so on /r/reloading before i actually purchased anything.

i asked questions and made a shopping list.

those guys are very helpful

research what you actually need for the caliber / bullet grain you want to reload before you buy anything.

double and triple check what powder you need as well. it could save your life.

i kinda over did it with supplies

haven't opened half the boxes yet.

Leatheman Style CS has excellent scissors and a very good blade for it's size(1.6in blade). It is basically a step up for the SAK classic. Better scissors, blade, and tweezers. Loose the toothpick and gain a bottle opener. Can be found for around $20. It won't replace an actual knife in most peoples EDC, but for many it could.

If it isn't enought knife then look into a value dedicated knife like an opinel no.6 as well if you want more knife.

u/notheretomakefrainds · 1 pointr/motorcycles

Take a look at these if you do

Last me usually 3-6 months (riding about 1k mi / month), so the price is pretty similar to disposable, but I find them much more comfortable / easy to put in / better for using with music in helmet

Freehand and under $15 the Whetstone Cutlery 400/1000 Grit Whetstone is a nice starting affordable freehand whetstone.

Guided and under $25 the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener is a nice mini complete package that includes a 220 grid diamond plate for chip repair, a fine 600 grit diamond plate, 1000+ grit ceramic rod and a leather strop with compound.

You can also send the knife back to Kershaw for a free sharpening then just invest in a nice strop with compound to touch up the edge. Done properly you only need to send it back to Kershaw probably once a year if that.

You may want to look into a turret style as it'll make things easier and faster. Like the Redding T7

www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000VNO2QO/

Also you may want to get a Frankford Arsenal digital scale it's 1/3 the price and has better reviews.

I'd go with the Frankford Arsenal wet tumbler it's easier, holds more and the brass is cleaner. Also no dust.

Also get the Lyman kinetic bullet puller it's got a nice soft handle the collet puller is nice if you have a lot of them to do.

Get a Leatherman multi-tool for EDC (Wave is the best all around but the Wingman is a solid alternative if you find the Wave to be too large) and a heavy duty outdoors knife that can be used to baton wood (like the Mod 4 or RAT-5). Get a solid hunk of steel and make sure it's full tang.

Personally I would go with something like a Buck hunting knife . They are a nice compromise between the smaller knives and excessivley heavy bowies.

u/Sweet-And-Sauer · 1 pointr/ar15

If you want an unmagnified optic, like a red dot, and have an astigmatism, you may wanna take a look at prism optics such as this vortex spitfire

I'm sure you can find it cheaper elsewhere, but it's a 1x optic with an etched reticle, as opposed to the projected red dot sights. I have an astigmatism and I just deal with the little bit of starburst on standard red dots, but the prism optic above may be a good choice for you.

If you want to test out a cheap red dot option to see if it's okay for you, I'd recommend the Bushnell trs-25 as it's one of the better low-cost red dots. And if you don't like it, just return it.

u/alexdediu · 1 pointr/airsoft

Since you're new to airsoft I suggest getting a cheaper red dot at first. This red dot is pretty good, only 20 bucks and has great reviews. For the height you should get a rail riser, like this.

Spyderco has a wide range of folders under $100. There's the Delica, Endura, Dragonfly, Centofante 3, and Stretch to name a few. All high quality, made in the USA.

The Tenacious line (including the Persistence and Ambitious) is awesome if you want good quality for less than $40. However, if you want to spend more, I would definitely recommend US made knives.

u/TrantaLocked · 2 pointsr/MouseReview

Just checked the internals; the mod is certainly feasible. Imgur album with extra info for anyone interested.

I'll be using this grip tape from amazon, unless anyone has better suggestions.

The Scimitar really does feel amazing though. I'm also looking forward to it being slightly thinner to grip and even slightly lighter in addition to the extra sense of security of having a sturdy side grip to press on.

u/HumidNut · 1 pointr/reloading

I like the Lyman manual for the sheer number of bullet styles and, in general quality of information. That's what I typically suggest a "new" reloader. Other than that, I suggest the manual for the bullet mfg that you see yourself shooting a bunch of. If you shoot speer, get the speer, hornady, get the hornady, etc.

As for a digital scale, they go from super cheap to sky's the limit. I got a Gempro250 some three years ago, prior to that, used a PACT. Both are good, but that damn Gempro is $50 more on Amazon than when I got mine (I paid $143 on April 23, 2015, hey forgot to have a birthday for it...). Brownells has the Gempro250 for $130ish, but with the code MDX that knocks $10 off the scale and free shipping to boot. The calibers you list don't seem to strike me as the precision type, so a $130 scale might be a bit excessive.

I've heard decent things about the Frankfort Arsenal Scale, seen a bunch of people use them, but I cannot personally vouch for the product. I have used a bunch of the Caldwell/Frankfort Arsenal/Battenfield products and have found all of them of good quality and value.

u/OC4815162342 · 1 pointr/EDC

I typically stick to benchmade but theyre normally $150+. gerber is a good brand, but if your state allows assisted opening you should go for a Kershaw. I carry a Clash and use it almost every day. Its got a flipper with a torsion bar assist, so be careful of state laws. Its a little heavy, but I like that, feels more solid to me. Excellent knife for the price. my other, more expensive knives that I rotate (or will be, in a few days when some of them get delivered) are the Benchmade Griptilian, the Benchmade North Fork and the Benchmade Barrage(assisted opener).

If you're looking for a cheap, rough work knife, get the Kershaw, but if you're looking for an investment and a really high end, go for a BM.

I agree with /u/1Davide here entirely. Do not blow off warnings about messing with unprotected Li-Ion cells.

I have seen them ignite nearby materials merely by having the terminals shorted by a split second contact with a screwdriver blade. If they end up igniting themselves (not hard to do btw), good luck putting out that fire with anything but a wheelbarrow full of sand.

Stick to protected, pre-built packs and chargers from non-shady distributors unless you know what you are doing (or care to learn the hard way).

If you are looking for a cheap but reliable charger for DIYing your own pack, though, I'd recommend this one:

My comment was written with most everyday people in mind. They're mostly sharpening bad 440C kitchen knives and don't want to spend a lot of money. Another big thing is that your average person in the kitchen doesn't even know just how sharp a knife can get. The average guy is usually okay with a good working edge. I was recommending the honing rod and the Lansky system because they're inexpensive, easy-to-use, and they last a long time. Plus, most people are never even going to need a Lansky. That's already more advanced than most want to get.

If you have good knives though, everything changes. If you're a knife guy, then yeah absolutely you need to have a more sophisticated sharpening system.

We're both knife guys, so you'll probably agree that it all really depends on which knife you're using.

There are so many factors that go into it.

How thick is the knife?
What's the blade length/shape?
What's the steel?
What's the grind? Convex? Hollow? Full-Flat Grind? Scandi? Sabre?
What's the angle on that grind?
What type of knife is this?
What kind of edge do I want to put on it?

I personally just put a convex edge on most of my knives, so all I really use is a strop and a handful of compounds. For everything else I just use an Apex Edge Pro.

>Seating Die:

Seating dies push the bullet down into the case and for pistol cases remove the belling done by the expanding die. Many seating dies can optionally apply a crimp, though some people dislike this because the bullet is still being pushed downward as the crimp is applied. Some seating dies come with multiple or reversible seating stems, this allow you to seat different profiled bullets(FMJ/Ball, Spitzer, VLD, etc) bullets without damaging them.

>Crimp Die:

Crimping dies push the case mouth into the jacket/lead of the bullet. This helps secure the bullet from ‘walking’ out of the case under recoil. There are taper crimps, often used in semi-auto oriented rounds that start from the base of the bullet and slowly narrow as it moves upwards towards the bullet and roll crimps which fold the very edge of the case mouth inwards. Roll crimps are often used on revolver cartridges like 44mag or 38spl and rifle rounds. Taper crimps are used on things like 9mm.

>Factory Crimp Die:

A Factory Crimp Die or FCD is kind of like a fail safe. If a bullet is slightly too large or that particular round didn’t get seated far enough a FCD will correct the mistake. It doesn’t make an unsafe round(say from a bad powder charge) safe to shoot, but it will help make sure all your rounds chamber. Since many people don’t like to seat and crimp on the same step, they use their FCD as their only crimp die.

>Powder Check Die:

A powder check die has a small free floating ram in the middle that drops into the case. It provides an easy way to spot check powder levels based on how high it raises. Some powder check dies will lock the press when they detect an over/under charge. In practice the low powder volume and wide case can make powder check dies unreliable for pistol loads. If you do use a powder check die you shouldn’t let it lull you into a sense of false security, you should still be visually checking your charges.

>Powder Throwers:

This isn’t a “die” so much, but many do fit directly onto your press. They dispense or ‘throw’ a specific charge of powder every time they are activated. Do to the nature of how they work how accurate they are depends on the type of powder you are using. Flake powders and long extruded powders measure with much more variation than ball or short stick powders. Throwers come in three flavors; Case activated, manual, and press activated. Press activated throwers dispense powder anytime the press ram is moved up. This is fine for a single stage press, but on a progressive press it is just a big mess waiting to happen. A manual powder thrower has a small handle you actuate anytime you want to dispense powder. These are great, as long as you don’t forget to pull the lever for every case. Case activated throwers only dispense powder when a case goes into them. These are great, especially on progressive presses.

>Bullet Feeding Die:

Bullet feeding dies place a bullet into the belled/charged case. With a bullet feed die you don’t need to manually place a bullet for each round. While the dies themselves are 20-40 dollars they won’t always save you time without an automatic bullet feeder hopper which can cost several hundred dollars. Only useful on progressive presses.

>Case Feed:

Again this isn’t technically a die, but it attaches to your progressive press and places a new case into your shell plate automatically. These are specific to your press and usually cost several hundred dollars.

Many powder throwers can be given a PTX add on that will expand as well as charge the case. On a progressive or turret press this saves you a spot on your press and on a single stage it saves you from having to do a separate belling step.

Shell Plates

Most die sets come with a shell holder of a matching caliber to keep the brass in the press. However if you are buying your dies piecemeal you’ll need to get a shell holder set. Progressive presses use “shell plates” which hold multiple rounds at a time. These can be proprietary and will need to be purchased separate from your dies.

Lee shell holder set $27.99

Hornady LnL AP shell plate 9mm $24.64

Case Trimmer

When a round is fired the case is under such extreme pressure that the brass actually acts like a plastic. It expands outwards in all directions until the chamber stops it. In front of the round however there is nothing to stop the brass from flowing. Because of this the brass grows in length. After a few firings the brass may be too long to fit in the chamber of a gun again. To combat this after sizing your brass(which further alters its dimensions) you measure it. If it is too long you need to cut some of that excess off with a case trimmer until it is the proper size again. This is primarily only a concern for rifle brass.

Case trimmers can be free hand, manual, and motorized. Free hand allows you to remove brass, but requires you to check with a case gauge often to ovoid over trimming. Manual trimmers allow you to set a certain length to cut to and do all rounds to that length rotating a small lever by hand. Motorized trimmers allow you to set a length and very quickly trim a large amount of cases. Some manual trimmers can have drills attached to make them faster. Not all motorized trimmers can handle multiple calibers.

Lee Zip Trim $21.99 and Lee Cutting Ball $9.99

Lyman Universal Trimmer $82.99

World’s Finest Trimmer .223 $75.95

Chamfer/Deburr tools

Chamfering removes a bit of metal from the inside lip of the case so that bullets seat more smoothly. Deburring is removing a small amount from the outside edge of the case mouth to help remove any burrs or flakes caused by chamfering. You don’t need to do either on pistol rounds as the case is belled wide enough to accept the bullet without it.

You can also chamfer primer pockets. This will make seating easier and in the case of crimped primer pockets it is required.

Again, there are manual and motorized options available. Motorized is worth it for anything above small batches.

Lee Chamfer Tool $3.99

Lyman Case Prep Multi Tool $22.99

Hornady Case Prep Trio $99.99

Bullet Puller

In the process of setting up your dies you’re going to make some dummy rounds. No primer, no powder, just case a bullet to dial in your case bell, seating depth, and crimp. You can just throw these rounds away. . . or you can get a bullet puller and recover your components. There are kinetic bullet pullers that work well with heavier bullets(125gr+ in my experience) and collet bullets that attach to your press.

Frankfort Arsenal Kinetic Bullet Puller $17.76

Hornady Cam-lock Bullet Puller $31.56

Why won't they work with the QX7? My QX7 takes a balance lead.... so no, it won't use the barrel connector, but that shouldn't matter.

As far as the charger goes, I'm not sure what that has off hand. For the longest time I've used this:
https://smile.amazon.com/Tenergy-Balance-Charger-Airsoft-Connector/dp/B004FGWY54/ref=sr_1_4

It charges just via the balance plug. Very slow, but never ran into an issue with it charging anything up to 4s.

As mentioned above though, charging at least LiPos can be dangerous. Most people bunker them or just make sure to watch them while they're charging. Joshua Bardwell had a good video about chargers that helped me understand more about charge rates and such.

Good luck!

SureFire Sonic Defenders are my go-to ear plugs as an audio engineer and person who spends a lot of time in loud situations. They aren't your average foam plugs, which actually do muffle the sound a lot. These babies just turn everything down by almost 30db. And they're much more comfortable than some of the other brands I've tried; they're made of silicone so they're very flexible. They're also pretty stylish, and most of their models have color options for different skin tones (though not as much variety as I would like) Looking at their website, they're marketed towards people who hunt or spend a lot of time at the gun range, but they obviously will work in every loud setting. I'm seeing several of their models on Amazon for less than $20, which is great considering one pair will last you at least half a year if you don't let them get too caked up with wax.

I love Kershaw assisted open knives. Makes opening them one handed a breeze, and often you only have one hand free in this line of work. Usually you can reverse the pocket clip to whichever side is more comfortable for you too.

I prefer half serrated, half straight blade as I have to cut through line all the time. I used to have a Ken Onion Leek, that I LOVED, it was awesome, so sleek and slim in my pocket, except my wife lost it after I asked her to keep it in her purse once... never again.

Now I have something like this though not exactly, but it works well enough for me. And it's cheap so I don't worry about abusing the crap out of it.

If you want to spend less than $50: Ontario RAT II Currently $26 on Amazon.

If you want to spend less than $100: Spyderco Delica 4 Currently $65 on Amazon.

They are the kings of their respective price ranges. The Delica steel is a definite upgrade from the RAT II, and the knife is much lighter and easier to carry.

They are both stunningly good knives for the money.

  • A load manual from your bullet manufacturer of choice. Since money is an issue, I'd start with Hornady and/or Sierra bullets which are on the affordable side of the spectrum and are good quality. Also, Hodgdon has a lot of free data for their powders (including IMR) on their website.

This is basically my exact setup and I get great results from it.

I'll give you some options here instead of just one choice.

This CRKT is a wonderful tool.

If you'd like another Spyderco you can't go wrong with a Dragonfly or a Centofante III.

If you've never got a Kershaw they're killer knives for the price. The Leek is a great introduction.

Or, you could buy 2 knives with your fifty. Ontario's RAT I and RAT II are some sweet knives.

Depending on your taste. You simply cannot go wrong with any of these knives.

If you're wanting a good RDS for the money, the Vortex SPARC or Crossfire are always good and have a really good resale value. Those will run you about $250 though.

For the most part you get what you pay for, but I see a lot of people using a Sig Sauer Romeo5. It's an excellent RDS for the price (about $130).

The Romeo5 is on sale at Amazon right now: https://www.amazon.com/Sig-Sauer-SOR52001-Romeo5-Compact/dp/B01C95I8N4/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=Sig+Sauer+SOR52001+Romeo5+1x20mm+Compact+2+Moa+Red+Dot+Sight%2C+Black&qid=1559135124&s=gateway&sr=8-1

I personally wouldn't recommend anything with an MSRP below $100.

As a fellow flipper I'm going to recommend fucking around with some grip tape. Something like this. http://www.amazon.com/GT-5000-phones-cameras-knives-tools/dp/B00ATH0KEA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1452065743&sr=8-3&keywords=grip+tape You can do a lot with a Zippo that has great grip in some places and a good slip on others. It's cheap enough to rip it off and try more in a different places.

I like my Worksharp Field Sharpener. Diamond stones, ceramic, and a strop with a guide for 26 bucks. Also, great for camping when you get a nicer set.

u/RallyMech · 6 pointsr/3gun

Rifle stuff:

  • Get a bundle of regular chamber flags, like [these]. There's no reason to spend that much on a chamber flag.
  • I'm a big fan of Holosun Red Dots, especially the motion activated circle dot (EoTech style reticle) models like the HS503GU. The smaller dot definitely helps with longer range-small target shots.
  • If you're going to stick with the TRS-25 (I've competed with one myself), go for the tall riser rather than the medium. Many competitors are moving to 2.04" optic mounts for a more upright head position, the one you linked works out to be 1.54". [Link]
  • The fancy charging handle is somewhere between nice-to-have and pointless. It all depends on whether your local clubs stage guns hot/cold, and whether you have to drop the mag and clear the chamber before dumping the gun. The 4 clubs I shoot at all have different rules for this.
  • I would skip the MS4 sling and the QD end plate. Single point is good in very specific circumstances, which don't exist in 3gun. Save the cash, and get an MS1. Note that you will rarely need or use a sling in 3gun. 2gun/combat type matches generally require one however.
  • Don't buy a BAD lever. Consider the PDQ bolt catch, or another option if you need to manipulate the bolt catch from the right side of the rifle. See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4cwMNIogZ4
  • If you don't already have a bore snake and a cleaning rod, I would pick up both. Bore snake for simple bore maintenance, and cleaning rod to pound out a squib. If you shoot enough, you will eventually get a squib.
  • You will want to buy a handful of mags. Stick with PMAGs, there's no real reason to get anything else.

    Pistol stuff:

  • That holster may not work well with that belt. I would get an ALS version with mid or low ride mount. Or get a purpose made friction only holster. I use a 6930ALS mid ride-light bearing with a G19.
  • I have the same pistol mag caddys. No complaints from me, but if you really want to be competitive from the start, you may want something that allows adjustment for better indexing. Someone else will be able to recommend them for you.

    Shotgun:

  • Opening up the loading port will help, without a doubt.
  • That shell caddy is really nice. I personally use Taccom caddies due to their price.
  • Skip the fancy chamber flag
  • Might be worth looking into Taccom's match saver [link]. No opinion one way or another. Note that match saver's tend to be consumable items, as dumping the shotgun after using the match saver will sometimes break it.

    Transport Equipment:

  • You will get really annoyed carrying around your gear, ammo, snacks, and water. There's a reason that carts and wagons are so prevalent. I personally use a $40 collapsible wagon from Walmart, because I can't fit anything bigger in my car.

If you want to spend some actual cash on a really good optic I recommend either a primary arms T1 and riser or a [Holosun] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NC1G0KI/ref=dp_cerb_2). Dutch uses a Primary Arms but IMO the holosun is probably the best budget real steel optic on the market.

These knives are a Buck Whittaker 437T Revolution at the top, and a Kershaw Chill. Recently I have expanded my collection of Kershaw knives. I have the Brawler and the [Lifter] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ILFLBYK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523470233&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=kershaw+lifter+knife) as well. I think they are a great value for the comparatively low price point. They come very sharp, don't have frills, and they just work.

A couple months ago I hit gold in my search to reacquire a knife I lost as a kid. My Buck Whittaker 437T fetish was finally acted upon, and I found two on Ebay. Well, I was searching for something else, and I found another one! This one is black. So, now I have three - blue, black, and green. My search for more is always ongoing, but I'm not seeking them out any longer. All three of them have been disassembled, oiled, cleaned, and sharpened. They are in tip top working order.

What does the headstamp, the bottom of the cartridge case, say? neutralization? stick the brass end in a vice and pull the copper bit out with good pliers. Lots of Keymod accessories from all the retailers, such as here: https://www.aimsurplus.com/catalog.aspx?groupid=6104 Your handguard has keymod slots at multiple angles, so you can be creative.

In terms of optics, for a red dot optic Vortex makes some affordable ones (as mentioned previously) and they have a great warranty. Their Strikefire 2 is pretty popular: https://www.opticsplanet.com/vortex-vortex-strikefire-ii-red-dot-4-moa.html

As is their more compact Sparc AR: https://www.opticsplanet.com/vortex-sparc-ar-red-dot-sight.html

An even more affordable decent red dot is the Bushnell TRS-25 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ABP8YCA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A7JHWRZ8JNPD6&psc=1

For a magnified scope, there are the usual players such as Leupold, Nikon, Bushnell, Vortex, etc. Just depending on how much you want to spend and at what range you imagine shooting at. Take a look at the Vortex Strike Eagle or the Vortext Spit Fire for a magnified red dot.

There are also "combat" oriented ones, such as the EOTech or Trijicon ACOG, but they get pricey.

FYI Optics Planet has a HURRY75 $10 off $75 coupon going right now, until tomorrow.

Right?

Now, apparently, I get my choice of some overpriced $300+ pair of headphones, to throw on the pile of regular-ass headphones that I have which do the job just fine, a $150 pocket knife that I probably won't like more than my $14 Opinel (seriously...I can't see what the point of $100+, very losable pocket knife is...what does it sing you a song when you're using it to open your mail?), or...a watch. I guess they sell camping equipment too? Lol?

It just seem like they're trying to move away from a site that offered good deals on a variety of objects to being a site that offers only absurdly expensive versions of objects you probably already have, primarily for hipsters that don't mind spending hundreds of dollars...on a knife, or a pair of headphones. Or something?

I don't get it, personally. They must not be doing well.

For a buck or two more you can get a much better edge on your steel. If you've spent any serious money on your knives, don't ruin them on a pull-through sharpener like that. Here's a basic 2-stone kit for about the same price as the big one. Or this Lansky 4-rod crock box if you want a "pull-through" style. For a few bucks more ($20 or so) you can get a slightly better Japanese stone set. If you want something more "pull-through" style you can get the [WorkSharp Field sharpener](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009YKHZ96/ref=s9_al_bw_g469_i4} for $30 that will get you consistent angles.

For what it's worth, my Lee 50th Anniversary kit has been fantastic for me. I will admit that I almost instantly swapped out the included measure for the Pro Auto Disk and the beam scale for an electronic. I also invested in a universal decapper.

How are you planning on case cleaning? Ultrasonic, vibratory, wet tumbling (like the cool kids do)...?

u/50calPeephole · 2 pointsr/reloading

I reload 9mm and 5.56, here's my experience:

  1. Lee Breech Lock Challenger Kit: $120 shipped
  2. Electronic scale $30
  3. Reloading trays (2) $5 ea.
  4. Case de-burrer thingy $25
  5. Misc Case length trimming widgets $10
  6. Reloading Manual: I found mine free online in .pdf form, but take your pick.
  7. Bullet puller $12

Instruction manual Seriously though, this guy is one of the best reloading resources around.

Basically, any folding knife you get needs to be less than 3.75" cutting length of the blade, and cannot use any kind of spring to help it open quickly. A switch blade is a double-bladed, spring assisted knife that is also illegal (since it's spring assisted), unless the cutting length is less an one inch.

For me, my favorite is the Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara 2 knife. I think you can still find it online for a good price. Keeps an edge pretty well, and is legal in WA state.

Unless you have a really good kitchen scale I wouldnt go with it. I've had good luck with this Frankford Arsenal scale.

u/Methelsandriel · 1 pointr/electricians

I've got a pair of these, they're not too bad. I do like the [ear plugs ](http://www.SureFire.com/ EP4 Sonic Defenders Plus filtered Earplugs, triple flanged design, reusable, Clear, Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001V2SS9G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_s8Wryb0BHRPV0) better though.

u/DoYouLikeMyName27 · 2 pointsr/airsoft

Well, you could get a 7.4 or 9.6 butterfly. Both would have about the same battery life, the 9.6 would have like 100 more MaH. But, as I'm sure other people will mention, the 7.4 will be cheaper if you order from the hobby king US warehouse. The only thing I noticed about that particular website is they ship their batteries with odd connectors sometimes. This one seems alright though. For a charger, I like to stick to very basic ones. I have this one and it works fine.

Edit: I dun goofed. Don't get the battery I linked. It's too big for a crane stock.

Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener - sharpening guides, diamond plate, ceramic rod, leather strop https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009YKHZ96/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_wE1TCbW45J7GV

Own several of these. Keep one at work, one in hunting pack and one in my day to day backpack. Sorta teaches you to freehand angles. Recommend reading the amazon reviews. And you can often find them on eBay for $20-25

Liked the smaller one so much I purchased this for home

Work Sharp Guided Sharpening System https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X9KU3GO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_hF1TCb7HPPFQ5

I use this larger one on my higher end knives. Hunting / field dressing. It’s the tabletop of the smaller one.

I personally own a fallkniven f1 http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001JA9Y66 It has been a great knife for me over the past few years. The blade is nice and thick, runs full tang and carries a wicked sharp full convex edge. Its made of a laminated steel using a vg 10 core and another stronger steel for the side of the blade. All in all I have used it for whittling, batoning, hammering and even some minor chopping. I highly recommend it.

u/Optimistic_Corndog · 8 pointsr/Bushcraft

I'd go with this thing: http://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Survival-Thermorun-Handle-Sheath/dp/B001JA9Y66/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1333752535&sr=1-1

The Fallkniven F1 is made of insanely durable VG10 steel and is used worldwide as a survival knife for military forces. It's a bit outside of the $100 range, but this one's on sale. Just look around, I'm sure you'll find the reviews to be unanimously positive.

u/JayStavy · 1 pointr/knifeclub

If you dont know already, that's a Buck 119 Special. They're pretty cheap and is a great knife. Pick one up, you won't regret it.

u/PrettyFuckingChalant · 1 pointr/woodworking

I keep a Kershaw Chill in my drawer at work. Aside from the occasional run across a stone have given it zero love. It's a screwdriver, scraper, box knife, bottle opener, chisel, and occasional sliver digger. It's held up surprisingly well.

u/itchikneesan · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Yeah, I get what you mean. The corner of the smallest pad on mine kept peeling back even early on because my ring finger would kinda brush up against it. I can definitely say the adhesive on this stuff is really strong!
Here's the link to the one I got:

I would pass on that. For an extra 120 you can get a much nicer rifle. Buy that plus a cheap red dot like the trs25or iron sights and you be set with a sweet mid grade rifle. His rifle looks pretty stock aside from the cheap looking handguard and possibly an "enhanced" trigger.

u/Yewtfmcd · 4 pointsr/gundeals

Should probably mention a price range. Thats quite a long list of options. BUT if its just a .22 and you aren't looking to spend a boatload, the Bushnell TRS-25 is a great little quality red dot for the money. $50 shipped w/ amazon prime https://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Trophy-TRS-25-Riflescope-tilted/dp/B00CIY7JAU

u/josiahromoser · 1 pointr/TREZOR

I also have a daily carry, opinel #06 - a little too big for that pocket so it goes in my main pocket.

I plug/unplug my Trezor probably 15-20 times a day so I've also added a magnetic usb connector to it. Bought a dock for my desk at work and home and it's been pretty awesome.

Here's a few I've seen

Or, you can just buy all the things you would want on Amazon, it'll come in 1 or 2 boxes. Here's a few choices to put together a "kit"

This or this for flashlight.

This This, or, This For a multitool depending on the size you want.

This or This for knife (Note: I am not a knife person, I have a Squid and I like it and I've heard good things about the Kershaw Chill)

Exotac FreeKey System

u/bdsmchs · 1 pointr/reloading

Lyman case prep multi-tool: https://amzn.com/B004MCMCYE

Lets you chamfer and debur using a drill or powered screwdriver. It comes with adapters that are threaded 8-32 so you can put ANY cleaning rod attachment in a drill, or other tools like primer pocket uniformers, etc.

Best $20 I never spent (Was a gift. Would buy again though).

u/Tinyjay · 2 pointsr/knives

First "real" (by real I mean name-branded) knife I purchased: The Kershaw Chill
A bit of a stronger blade "upgrade": The Tenacious by Spyderco.
The next one I plan to buy: Kershaw Blur

I really like Kershaw for quality. Just my $.02 to help give you an idea of what's out there.

I picked these up and I have to say they're pretty good. I plug up the gun side ear and leave my non-shooting ear open and it works great.

u/aramid · 3 pointsr/Firearms

Ear pro = ear protection. It's whatever you use, not a particular type.

You should look at electronic earplugs. They're hilariously expensive (expect to pay $400), but your hearing is worth it. If that's too steep, this Surefire item looks very interesting. They appear to be mechanical instead of electronic; look at some reviews and maybe give them a try.

u/gooknezz · 2 pointsr/guns

To expand on what /u/Lost_Thought said, the link you included has the standard mount that will result with a very close mount, like this or this.

If you want it mounted to better co-witness with your iron sights, you will need a rise mount that will end up looking like this.

The medium riser will co-witness with your irons. The high riser will give you a lower 1/3 co-witness.

These are the only two items (sight and one riser) you would likely need to purchase.

u/Bleuser · 5 pointsr/knives

I agree with the BK2, but for something closer to your price range, add 5 bucks to it and get a Buck 119..I love this knife...Perfect for hunting, fishing and general shanking.
Buck 119

u/Taylor_says · 4 pointsr/TrollXChromosomes

I think it's a rubber prop knife, lol. I got this one, it's inexpensive but has great reviews.

u/ollsmells · 2 pointsr/knifes

I think the meadowlark 2 is a good shout then, quite small and cuts well with good blade geometry. If you were looking for something a little larger maybe the Cara cara 2, it is a very nice blade for under £25.

Thanks for the condolences. If you want a cheap version of a spyderco knife I would get one of these Byrd knifes. I am rocking this one and love it.

Lots of people like the Bushnell TRS-25 Red Dot, but I personally don't have any experience with it. Vortex makes some great red dots for under $200, and so does Holosun. You can also check out Primary Arms, as they make some of their own brand optics.
