To gain muscle mass, you must elicit a hypertrophic response from your muscles. This can be done in a lot of ways. Typically, this is done using weights but there are other methods. With body weight exercise it is definitely possible and a lot of people get success with it.
The basic idea you want to always keep in mind is balance. You want to keep your muscles balanced by doing exercises that work one set of muscles and then exercises that work the "opposite" set. This is done to prevent muscular imbalances that will most definitely lead to pain and injury. For example, push ups go with inverted rows, squats go with step ups.
Next up is the idea of progression. Eventually, the exercises start to get too easy and you aren't getting as much out of it as you could be. "Progressing" allows you to make the exercise more difficult for the same muscles or focus different muscles. Two decent videos showing the idea with the upper body are: one, two.
The equipment that you need to do body weight exercise at home is pretty simple. You need a chin up bar and a dip bar. The dip bar works for both dips and inverted rows and various progressions and so I would say it's needed. This dip bar is the one I'd personally recommend. Very portable and doesn't require any tools to assemble.
As far as nutrition goes, I'd say a healthy balanced diet is all you really need. Perhaps up your calorie intake by a couple hundred or so when you hit a plateau, but I wouldn't say to go too crazy with it.
In terms of supplements, I'd say they aren't 100% required. However, I do take a 1 serving whey isolate shake with water after every workout to aid in a speedy recovery. I find it helps, but not everyone does.
My parting words are to work the core and lower back a lot. A strong core and lower back will make you able to progress much easier and will make you feel a lot better and stronger as well as prevent injury. Take it easy and make sure it's safe.

Non weighted pull ups and dips are super easy when you lift a lot. 30 push ups are also super easy.

I put that in my spare living room and its amazing for just hitting some quick exercise when you do not have time to go to the gym.
I recently fractured my foot and can't drive to my gym to perform what meager lifts I can still perform, so I need to do what I can at home. The one thing I can not figure out is how to set up a bar for chin ups/pull ups etc. I live in a basement style apartment and can not easily leave, so having something down here would be ideal.
A generic pull up bar like this isn't compatible with any of my doors.
Next, I looked for 'chin up stations' like you see in many commercial gyms, like this. Unfortunately my ceiling is roughly 6' 2'' and I am 5' 11''. That unit is 6' 3'' and wouldn't even fit on its own, much less with my chin over the bar.
Next, I saw some advertisements for bars you... nail into the wall? Like this one from rogue. This seems pretty promising but I can barely hammer a nail without breaking something and I'm unsure if my walls could even support it.
At this point, I'm out of ideas. The only other thing I can think of is the kind you jam into a doorframe, like this but I've seen those spontaneously fail (my dad tore his shoulder when it dropped him mid pull up) and am pretty not enthusiastic about them.

You just piqued my interest. I was also looking into buying some parallettes.
After more searching, it's just as /u/Bakaichi says, the height is according to your goals and the difficulty of the movements. With lower height parallettes being harder and higher 'easier', but since full ROM HSPU is among one of my goals, I'd rather go with one of 25 to 30cm high.
Now about the price, well it's up to you. At least for me after looking those from Skillworx damn are they expensive... If I were to pay for anything over 100€ (among the options available outside the US) that'd be from Rogue.
If you look at LittleBeastM videos you can see most of his equipments are from Rogue, and those pair of parallettes look solid enough. My problem with metal parallettes is that unless you have checked them out personally you run the risk of buying a wobbly pair made cheaply... On the other hand wood looks much more solid and from what I've read there's not much if any maintenance needed.

So I just got this cheap dip station.
So heres my mini review, along with a few questions.
The good: For $50 its super solid and incredibly stable and high enough for me to do dips with a straight body (Im 5 foot 8 inches). It only weighs around 50lbs total and sets up super fast. Overall not too bad.
The bad: Its about 3 inches wider than Id like it to be. The bars are also too skinny, and I need to add some tape to thicken them up a bit.
Questions: What would be the best kind of tape for the job? I was thinking Id use Gorilla tape to add most of the bulk, then finish with a few layers of athletic tape.
Also will I be risking injury adding weight to my dips when the bars are a little bit too wide? If so I can have my buddy who is a welder bring it in just an inch or two.

I tend to agree with /u/andersonah, based on relative safety concerns with each.
I'll tell you right now, you need to be very particular about your approach to the rings.
Slowly transition into one set of ring dips with perfect form and stability, and don't add more than 1 set per week. It is ok to go slower.
I am recommending that you consider weighted dips with option 4 or 5 first, though.

I got chrome Lebert Equalizer XLs. I bought them as my birthday gift last year and wanted something nice. I had a discount code and I think they were about $120. You could probably save money buying something similar. I like that they're a little taller than some of the others. They're also made out of stainless steel and seem to be made well.
Apparently this is a common story. I was talking to my brother who is a PT and he told me this happens all the time and to DEFINITELY not get one (In part because I am a large human, 6'6 270).
I got this Amazon dip station and do bodyweight rows instead. Pretty happy with it, and if it breaks I'm only falling like 2 feet max.

I was doing some research into this, and Body Solid seems to have the no frills one that is best reviewed. As a beginner I'd love to be able to spring for FreeMotion assisted dip/chinup for
$1,600$4,400.for what it's worth, it's even easier to patch a hole in the wall than it is to make the hole in the wall, so I'd still recommend a pullup bar in your wall, and an old person's walker for p bars

I looked at walkers for doing dips when I first started but then found this $50 Black Mountain dip station. It's the better choice for just a few more dollars. Pretty good deal getting all that for $200. I haven't found anything good in my area other than some dirt cheap plates.

Pros: This piece of equipment comes in two pieces so you can change the width for doing your dips or rows. You can use just one piece of it to do rows (palms facing away) or you can place both sides next to one another to use a neutral (hammer) grip.
It stands up to weighted dips just fine, the heaviest I've ever done so far was 70lbs on the dip belt at 155lbs bodyweight.
The height of this equipment from the ground is perfect for me as a 5'6" tall person. I'm able to do rows even with my feet raised up on a platform about knee height. I'm also able to do dips without my dip belt that go just below parallel. If I'm using my dip belt (I had to adjust the chain length) I can get to parallel.
Cons: It could be a lot higher up from the ground (taller.) If you're taller than 5'6" you will not be able to get a full range of motion for your rows if you raise your feet up on a platform. You also will not be able to get a good depth on your dips.
The height of this thing is the only real con if you're a taller person than I am.
Qualities to look for when purchasing: You only need to take the total height of this piece of equipment into consideration if you're taller than 5'6", in which case you'll want to buy another dip station/row station. You could raise the Lebert Equalizer up on some type of platform such as cinder blocks to get over this, but there are probably other dip stations/row stations out there that will be a better fit.
Alternatives: This is an alternative that has adjustable height on Amazon.com. Otherwise, you can search online for dip and/or row stations.
You could also do dips with most power towers (in addition to being able to do your vertical pulls on the tower.)
Purpose/uses: Weighted/unweighted dips and inverted rows.

Don't forget if you're unable to do 3x8 horizontal rows you don't even need to be doing dips yet anyway. The support practice is important though.

I have this which I bought a few years ago when it was cheaper. It collapses and doesn't take up much room at all. I can assemble/disassemble it in 15 seconds. It might be too pricey right now, but you can find other collapsible dip stands for cheaper.
Also, for the chairs, you can try putting something weighted on the seat so they are more stable and you can try putting a towel on the back so it's more comfortable to grip.
I bought the "Ultimate Body Press" (http://amzn.com/B000ICHPIK) a few years ago & it has served my purposes good enough. It's got a simple design & it's easy to move around the house. I've done both body-weight dips & weighted dips with it. It might not be "gym quality" with durability that can withstand constant daily use, but it's held up fine with just me using it a couple times a week for the last few years. It feels a little wobbly (as would just about anything that's not heavy or bolted down to a concrete floor), but it stays securely in place when I'm doing vertical dips on it.

Note that the parallel bar station does not store as easily as you might like. It's very useful, though; you can use it for dips, bodyweight rows, L-sit training, etc. The paralette bars linked by batman1285 are probably a good substitute, though they won't give you as much clearance from the ground.
I have been looking at one brother, I have read that it's better to get one you can put in the wall on studs in the wall. From what I heard the door ones aren't as safe cause they can slip. But I have not used either. If you can't do that then maybe something like this.

It's pretty good. Doesn't move around or shake when you use it. Also works for like body weight rows. Still it's kind of expensive for single function equipment.
I got this one partially because it came with the rings. As noted by some in the reviews, it isn't very tall and doesn't work great for taller users. I'm only 5'6" so it works great for me :-) Doing ring push ups works well with it too.

or make your own if you're so inclined. Alternatively, if you can set up rings, you can do lots of bodyweight stuff on those, and I've used a public park before that had a set of parallel bars. But you're right, it's pretty tough to do dips without some form of equipment.

This one isn't super cheap...but I have it and it's really good. I used to weigh ~220 lbs and it would just barely move when I used it. I would definitely recommend it IF you can spare the cash. If not, just read reviews of them online so you know what to look for on craigslist.
I use the Ultimate Body Press. I see some other cheaper options but I like what I have and it folds down easily for storage.

I would buy one of those door frame pull-up bars but I'm convinced that I'll pull and interior wall down.
Something you can mount from ceiling joists would give you better height and be stronger. Not sure if that's an option for you though. Otherwise, maybe one of those "power towers" that have pull-up bar and dip/leg raise thing.

When it comes to working out, I'm a huge introvert. Being able to stay in my own house and workout is probably the only reason I've been so committed thus far.
Plus, I can get a pump whenever I have an extra minute. It's the best investment I've ever made, bar none.
I did leg-assisted for the fat handles. Still worked pretty nicely.
For the rotating fat handles, I made them to spec but ended up just taking the PVC and putting it on my door-frame chin-up bar. Same effect, I figured.
Did something a bit different for the towel hangs. I draped a judo belt over a [dip stand] (http://www.amazon.ca/Black-Mountain-Products-Stand-Dip/dp/B00EPKRUGS), grabbed an end in each hand, and held myself up like that. We do something similar in Judo practice and it was very difficult, heh. It was kind of like doing rows with the belt, except stopping at the top of the motion. Let me know if you think I'll get the same effect from that.

If you can stand on the beams with 1 foot without them bending or anything like that then the beams with be fine. The difficulty will be connecting the bar to the beams. I can't comment on that, since I don't know anything about your beams.

If you've already got decent core strength from poledancing I bet you'd do great with a calisthenic workout. Nice part about that is you can do it all in your living room on a mat, maybe with a set of parallettes. Push ups, body rows, planks and so on. You can get plenty buff with nothing but bodyweight exercises and the right diet.

I use one of these at home: looks like it's rated for 350 pounds. Folds up when I'm not using it, or more accurately sits in a corner until I have company coming over and then I fold it up and put it away.

and I hang it off of my iron gym, along with my rings. It actually works quite well, as long as you keep off the ends of the bars where it starts to bend a bit. It might not work very well for a shorter person (my GF had to use a chair to get up on it, she's 5"1').
Basically everything but squat jumps.
Buy some dip bars if you really get into it.
These are awesome, just follow the r/bodyweightfitness progression. If you jump into some exercises too quick and/or with bad form you can injure yourself.

Those twist-retractable pull-up bars won't work either? My brother-in-law has an Iron Gym, but I use a generic twist-adjustable pull-up bar in my doorframe. A more expensive alternative would be to buy one of those pull-up stations.

I got one befor xmas and do dips and rows off the bar and leg raises. Practice Lsit and push ups on the rings. The manufacturer also states lunges and chest flys can be done on the rings.
Its not the highest equipment as alot of reviews says its not suitable for dips with a dip belt.
I got this one on Amazon. It feels very safe and sturdy, but I don’t necessarily recommend it. One of the handles is crooked (see photos in the Amazon reviews... apparently other people have had the same issue), which isn’t a huge deal, but it’s annoying given the price.
It does only take about twenty seconds to (dis)assemble, and it takes up virtually no space when disassembled, so it’s great if you’re limited on space and don’t mind the crooked handle. If you aren’t limited on space and don’t plan on disassembling it often, I would go for a different one.

No problem. In the second one I linked someone asked that question and someone responded that he was 173 lbs and had no problems without screws. If anything, amazon has a really easy return policy so you can give it a try and just send it back if it doesn’t work.
If you have the space another option is a power tower. I got this one because I wanted a pull up bar but didn’t want the doorway cluttered and also didn’t want to get into screwing one into the wall or ceiling. You can also do dips and ab exercises but it does take it space.
