u/omaolligain · 3 pointsr/Fencing

>... a 12 year old beginner ... He would be the first to admit that he doesn't have a tremendous amount of physical endurance or strength. He's tall with lanky limbs..all femur and flat feet and hair. He's a lefty with limited coordination and no clue how little grace he has.

I was 11 when I started. And, my Dad used to joke that I was so clumsy before I started fencing that it was pretty common for me to have bruises all over my shins from awkwardly walking into coffee tables.

>Given how much gear you guys have to wear while sparring or competing and even how fast paced and athletic the footwork and workouts can be during practices, I'm finding it hard to know what athletic pants to buy this kid as a base They are all thick or heavy and the lightweight ones pill pretty quickly so I didn't know if I'm just looking in the wrong direction or if our expectations are too high.

I wear 3/4 length tights, like these. And, above that I wear lightweight shorts, like these. If you're curios I wear athletic boxer-briefs, like these. And, that said I wash ALL of my athletic clothes in cold water with the regular cycle and dry in low-no heat only.

>Shoes - Oh Jesus Christ. He's been through almost 3 pair. As I said, he's flat-footed so he's hard on shoes anyway. We haven't invested a ton of cash into gear just because we didn't know how long he'd be into this but we bought him a pair of Ontusuka Tigers or something like that in the beginning. Since then we've just put him in sneakers/gym shoes. No clue what might be best for his feet. His coach is so awesome but just says "Whatever is supportive for his feet for now." He's Armenian and hardcore so right now gives zero fucks about my kid's shoes and just wants him to learn how to sit back with a weapon in his hand. Mom on the other hand likes to spend money on shoes that might last through the next shoe size. Unless I'm wrong. Tell me if my expectations are too high.

'Ontusuka Tigers' are not actual athletic shoes ; they're fashion shoes that are based on an out of production pair of fencing shoes. That said fencing shoes can be quite expensive. The standard advice is to buy a pair of court shoes (volleyball or racquetball shoes). The general advice is that for 'bang for the buck' buy Asics Gel Rocket 9's (which are a popular brand of volleyball shoes).

And because he has flat-feet I would highly recommend that you buy inserts for his shoes. I recommend Superfeet Carbon's, they'll last longer than the shoes will.

>Blades - He's a foil and for now, he's got basic AF gear, again, because we had no way of knowing if he'd be able to hold post to this sport or not. I'm sure his coach will eventually have suggestions about upgrading someday but I'm wondering when they start buying gear that lasts. Also, from a fighting style/weapons choice, I'm guessing his coach will guide him on that too at some point. He starts all the kids on foil. Is there a different style that's better suited to lefties or should we just roll with it? Our kid loves this sport but are our expectations too high?

For beginners, I recommend just using standard StM (or Dynamo) foils which are made in a Ukrainian forge. I am not a fan of the Chinese made blades (i.e., Absolute, Blue Gauntlet/SG, Linea, etc...) because they just break far to fast. Leon Paul foils are overpriced garbage, so avoid those.

As for when do you start buying higher quality blades, once he decides he's going to compete regularly I would consider upgrading to at least an FIE blade then. If I were you I'd rather him have 2-3 non-FIE StM blades up and running for him before I worry about getting him $100+ dollar blades.

Same with his 'Whites' just stick with the Absolute 350N gear.

If you're going to make an upgrade then buy a nice glove. And if he winds up competing in epee I recommend upgrading to an FIE mask but otherwise you're fine as is.

>He did his first tournament this weekend as was super proud to even win one match given that every other participant had been fencing 2+ years. We beamed! Any advice on how to keep him engaged without pressuring him would be appreciated. Such a great sport and a fine sub you have here.

I think the best thing you can do, is to help him set realistic but difficult short term goals and to celebrate with him when he achieves those goals BUT, to keep a healthy distance from his training. Sometimes parents have a hard time not playing the role of a coach in their kids' training BUT, I think for 99% of kids it's crucial that they have that separation between their coaches and their family life. You don't want him to take the (otherwise healthy) pressure he might feel from the competition home with him. Especially, if he doesn't do as well as he (and you) hoped he would do. Let his coaches do that, it's their actual job.

I keep my shoe purchases under $100 for the same reason: don't want to waste money on a shoe that'll be toast too quickly.

  • Right now I'm rocking Adidas Streetball 2. Has good support but not quite as "snug" on my ankle as I prefer, but that's remedied by adding an ankle brace if you're concerned about it. Otherwise a very solid shoe for players who post up a lot and really bang and grind on an outdoor court. It'll take a LONG time to wear down the treads on those. They're kinda heavy though for smaller/quick-footed players & movements.

  • If there's a chance I'll be in more of a PG role, I have a pair of [Reebok Pumpspective Omni Lite](https://www.amazon.com/Reebok-Pumpspective-Basketball-Blazing-Orange/dp/B00AW7GYBA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484768574&sr=8-1&keywords=pumpspective
) that I like to use. I like the "outer lip" that they have to prevent ankle rolling. A lot of cutting on a rough court will have you wearing down the tread pretty quickly though... but they transition between indoor/outdoor pretty well. Plus they get nostalgia points for having "The Pump."

  • A good balance between the two (in my opinion) is Jordan Superfly 2. They have good ankle support, and hold up pretty well on the concrete. I recently tried the Superfly 5s on --since my 2s are close to being tossed because of wear and tear-- and the newer Superfly shoes have a much different fit than the 2s (I did NOT like the newer fit). Treads are a slightly deeper than the Pumpspective, but not as deep as the StreetBall. These are my "preferred" outdoor shoe on the list at the moment.

  • I also rotate a pair of Nike Air Max Stutter Step 2. They're extremely lightweight (especially compared with the other shoes on my list) and I usually use these as indoor shoes, but I have taken them to concrete courts for "impromptu" pickup games. Decent ankle support if you lace them up tightly, and can still fit an ankle brace as well (if you need it). If these had a deeper tread I would make them my default "go-to" basketball shoe. Alas, they aren't, so I don't want to wear them down too quickly.

  • I've recently picked up the Steph Curry 2.5 recently, because they were on ridiculous discount when I saw them and I heard they have really good traction, but haven't broken them out yet. I honestly feel they're more suited for indoor use, BUT reviews say they hold out well on concrete, too.

I am the most indecisive person when it comes to shoes. I find it a really awkward thing to buy, specially in-store when you have to do that little test walk that makes people always walk funnily rather than normal.

I think its really hard to have a look for someone else so I focused on what I am looking for.

I started with comfort so you have a few different style of Skechers.
1)I dont know your family situation but these strike me as dad sneakers lol
2)These are a little bit more serious. I am from the UK so terminology is somewhat different. Not sure if you would consider them sneakers
3)These are sportier and ideal if you like to run but dont want to spend way too much on running shoes
4)Nike also has these running shoes I have always liked Nike shoes and they have a variety of colours, even if size 15.
5)I think these Adidas look amazing. I love that combination of colours.
6)Last but not least, another pair of Nike ones that I liked

Let me know what you think. I think I found it easier than choosing for myself which is very odd. I guess the hard part for me is making the final decision!

Should I win, I am happy for you to surprise me.

Thank you and have a nice day

Good cross training shoes (training for strength, speed, skill) need ankle support and good grip decent flexibility and sturdy and not be too spongy or too archy cause it makes weight lifting especially legs difficult and or less productive. Also, being lightweight and breathable.

Boxing cross trainers are really good all around shoe if you are going to be doing a lot of different types of workouts in them i.e. the following 3
They r in order of top rated and most to least expensive.

Adidas Pro Bout Boxing Boot, US6 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0089B5RMI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_s2KxDbMRAYNFA

adidas Box Hog 2 Mens Boxing Trainer Shoe Boot Black/White - US 9.5 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EA18MWS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sYKxDbAMSGPMX

adidas Men's Combat Speed.5, Silver Metallic/Black, 4 M US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XWN9T2Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_QYKxDb2A164FE

If you are mostly going to stick to weightlifting and caliestenics work having a flat sole and lightweight shoe with moderate flexibility is a pretty mix to go for but i wouldnt recomend much in the way of cardio with the following, (probably not the best for long distance running for example) decent for jumprope or stair climbing though

Hightop Converse allstars or pf flyers
Converse Chuck Taylor All Star High Top Core Colors (6,0 D(M), Classic Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWTMEBY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_j5KxDbRMZ5J8S

Or even Vans and some Asics
Like the half cabs
Vans Men's SK8-Hi(tm) Core Classics, Black/White, US:9 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VSUC9A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_y6KxDbTH3JV4B

ASICS Men's Matflex 4-M, Granite/White/Black, 9.5 M US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GY6MHRI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_d7KxDbHZX5K80

If you are going to do mostly a lot of hard impact running you should maybe go for tennis, basket ball, and cross country shoes due to the shock absorbent soles and slightly wider base of the shoes to distribute the shock a bit more evenly. The higher arches generally found in these types of shoes make some weight lifting less than desireable i.e. the squats and deadlifts for example due to forcing you to be in an awkward center of gravity like putting more of ur balance and weight onto the balls of your feet versus the heels which is good for running and sprinting and cycling and jumping (jumprope, tennis, basketball) but not for squats and weight lifting because you are supposed to load your weight on your heels for compound movements to have the appropriate load bearing distribution on your body and fully engage your core to prevent injury.

It all really depends on what you are doing.
If you are going to be rock climbing a lot get good rock climbing shoes. If you are going to hike a lot get good hiking boots. Most timerland boots are reliable and comfortable and designed for that. If you are going to train on grass a lot i would reccomend soccer cleats or turf shoes. Like the adidas mundiales or the nike predators.

I myself own a decent mix

For most all around training i use the adidas box hog 2.

For pure weightlifting or calisthenics i wear my converse.

For soccer and grass and turf training i wear my adidas mundials.

For hiking and bouldering i wear my timberland hiking boots.

For casual going out i wear doc martens usually.

For hospital work i wear some really cheap but super comfy sneakers with thick gel inserts cause you are standing around a lot and walking a lot. For 12 hours at a time. Before i worked in the hospital i was an emt and wore steel toe workboots geared toward firefighters and paramedics with gel inserts.

For everything else there's mastercard. Jk.

To clarify: these are not necessarily outfits, these are quality basic pieces that you can build a wardrobe around and incorporate your own style into.

Amazon links for the items listed:

  • Carhartt K121
  • Hanes Beefy-T

  • Levis 501 Shrink to Fit

  • Dickies 874

  • Chuck 70

  • Air Force 1

*Another user has recommended the [Comfort colors c1717 tee](Comfort Colors Pigment-Dyed Short Sleeve Shirt Small Lagoon Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06VY7T8W5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_hGbhAbZTK6NQW)

I own all of these items (except the 501s, I have APC new standards but I wanted to keep it budget friendly.) I can attest to the quality and the aesthetics of these clothes.

    Also:

  • If slim fit is more your thing, Levis and Dickies make slim fit versions of both pants! Dickies slim-skinny and levis 511 respectively. Just make sure you don't wear chunkier shoes like the AF1 if you plan on wearing slim/skinny pants. You'll look like you're wearing bricks on your feet.

  • A few alternatives would be Carhartt work pants, Champion reverse weave hoodie, and Adidas GATs if you plan on wearing slimmer pants.
u/IIIMilkman_DanIII · 3 pointsr/golf

I like to use indoor soccer shoes or turf soccer cleats (indoor ones have a more flexible midsole, and outdoor turf shoes usually have a more stiff feel...but all depends on which model shoe). They have softer rubber knobs similar to some golf shoes nowadays, not hard knobs like outdoor cleats). Also, they all have that lower profile you're looking for.

Biggest benefits I see are: Enhanced feel all around, when i wiggle my toes or rotate any way i can feel it translate to the ground very nicely. You can still get enough grip as well, unless it's really wet. Aesthetically you can get some that look a lot like golf shoes, or go a little wilder in the look as you'll have more choice there as well.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about: turf shoes

I've noticed lately in golf shops that more and more golf shoes are starting to mimic the design of soccer turf shoes a bit more.

Currently I'm using some Nike running shoes that have a nice grip action, mainly because I play in a drier climate and I can get away with not having longer knobs on the bottom. Really comfortable and all around good, flexible feel.

u/ColinMcI · 1 pointr/ultimate

I got some cleats made for field turf specifically, and I really like them. They provide much better traction than classic "turf" cleats, but they distribute weight more comfortably than regular cleats and seem to provide a more comfortable level of traction. The style is almost like classic Adidas Copas, but with far more cleat peg studs and garish colors.

Here's a general list: https://www.soccer.com/shop/products/footwear/artificial-grass-cleats

These are the ones I got and really liked. They were about $25 on sale: https://www.amazon.com/PUMA-Mens-evoSPEED-Soccer-Cleat/dp/B007M6AHQ2

u/UndeadPoptart · 1 pointr/paintball

I used to use soccer cleats for a long time, but recently I switched to football cleats that cover above the ankle i.e. https://www.amazon.com/Under-Armour-Highlight-Football-Black-Black/dp/B01GIIN40U/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1536465494&sr=8-8&keywords=under+armour+football+cleats

I have so far enjoyed the ankle support so I would suggest something like this. Soccer cleats will do pretty good too though. Make sure to not have any metal spikes, though I'd only really see this happening if you got baseball cleats which aren't common for paintball use.

u/No1callsMeThat · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

Well I have black ones right now, but in going to find the link for you I spotted these...got to have!

http://www.amazon.com/Asics-Split-Second-Tigershock--Tigershock/dp/B008ESY1EG/ref=sr_1_10?s=shoes&ie=UTF8&qid=1344565752&sr=1-10&keywords=asics+split+second

Pretty pricey but they have less expensive Split Second models...the great thing is the split sole, which is like lifting barefoot, but with support.

Also the front of the tongue of the shoe has a little velcro dealie to hold your laces, no untied shoes, ever lol

u/blinkme123 · 1 pointr/volleyball

I've been playing in these for about the past year. https://www.amazon.com/adidas-Performance-Court-Stabil-Volleyball/dp/B01GEYUQWC. I like them. fit well. Traction is nice, and I'm very picky about traction. The colorway is also sick. I coach at a HS and I've gotten compliments on them from kids who think they're some kind of Adidas basketball shoe.

Just got a pair of KD 8's (this is the "PG County" colorway). Traction is also good. I actually consistently jump like an inch higher in them than in the Adidas which is strange. I have a pretty wide foot though and the front is a smidgen narrow for me.

Also adding a pair of the Hyperattacks (I'm going with the Unlimited colorway) to the rotation next week. so if you haven't made a decision by then perhaps I can offer my opinion on those as well. Never used any Kobe shoe.

u/arash-adventures · 0 pointsr/CampingGear

The whitin trail running shoes on amazon are cheap af ($3x.xx), zero drop, stupidity comfortable wide toe box, & surprisingly durable. A pair lasts me 500+ miles. Better than 4 models of altras I have used & better than Lowa renegade.

  • a pct hiker

Edit: boots suck & you should definitely go for trail runners. They are less hot, more comfortable, & you can cross rivers in them much easier. They dry faster than boots & the pair I’m suggesting slip on & you don’t have to deal with bringing flip flops or crocs with you. Literally the best shoes I’ve ever had. I have over 1000 miles between 2 pairs. 4000+ mi hiking experience

I'm learning so much about shoes every day too! This is great! Rich is preparing me for when I fucking make it. I will never be able to thank him personally, because I'm too busy eating all these snacks.

ordering Peaks right now

Just FYI Peak has a few pairs of $50-$60 basketball shoes too...just fyi. On amazon...

For playing on firm ground fields, the only boot i can play in and not get terrible shin splints is Asics with a multi-stud configuration (https://www.amazon.com/Asics-Mens-Lethal-Testimonial-Soccer/dp/B00GY6FXT2). I think that there are more studs making contact with the ground helps alleviate whatever it is that causes me shin splints- although it may be different for you. Another option is Mizuno.

These brands may look less aesthetically appealing than your Nike or Adidas, but they are superior quality wise.

I also went to a podiatrist and had insoles made. The only problem is finding a good podiatrist amongst the sea of bad..

Finally, as other people have said, ice your shins. It sucks but it helps.

u/Nadhez · 1 pointr/ultimate

I'm looking for a new pair of cleats; the ones I have currently (these I think? mine are a similar pattern but are green; I'm assuming color's the only difference) are quite plasticy/hard on my feet and don't provide a lot of ankle support. I'm hoping for a pair of lacrosse or football cleats with more ankle support and cushion, as well as some give to let me go up on my toes when sprinting.

I'm women's size 8.5/men's 7, so trying on cleats in stores is a giant PITA. The Dick's around me only have women's cleats for soccer, which are too low in the ankle for me. If anybody has any suggestions on cleats or other stores to try I'd love to hear them!
