Shameless plug:

Real talk. I'm broke and I have to get my wisdom teeth removed, which is going to cost me a lot even with insurance (Yay for being a struggling artist). I need to get this done before it becomes a problem (I am not in any pain and do have time), but due to certain factors in my life (tech job not being great of course), this won't be easy on my wallet.

I am shamelessly asking for your assistance.

I am not here to start a kickstarter to pay for my operation, but I do have something that might help both promote me as a writer and ease the cost of my surgery...

Many years ago I got swept into writing and in the process I managed to squeeze out a novel. I still think it is a great piece of work, but only now did I have the courage to put it up on Amazon Kindle. Here is the premise for Prevailence below:

Terry Fox desired to live a normal teenage life like any other kid his age. Instead of focusing on his studies, a transfer to a private school, and his enrollment into sports, the teenager loses his family at the arrival of a zombie apocalypse. Now he has to wander around to find other survivors in the infected world, as well as coping with an unexplained manifestation of psychic abilities.

So there you have it. It's a young adult novel with zombies (infected if you want to get technical) and psychics. Oh, and a ninja.

It's available for $2.99 on Kindle.

I would be extremely grateful to anyone who shelled out the money for this novel. I also did some short stories that also available there. If I know you in real life I will thank you and buy you a drink. If I haven't met you, well thank you anyway. Spread the word if you can...and I hope you like it.

Thank you!

More information about me as a writer on my blog here.

EDIT: Thank you for the feedback so far. I will admit as my first book it is rough around the edges. My newer stuff is better, but this is the only book I feel comfortable releasing. My crime novel is nearly finished, just trying to fix the beginning, and my superhero story is only just started (150 pages atm). I am a bit nervous about putting myself out there and while I do expect feedback, please gentle (fragile ego).

Exceptional (Exceptional Book 1) by Jess Petosa##

"In the future, things are anything but ordinary..."

In 2022, the United States commissioned a group of scientists to experiment with genetic mutations. Their goal was to create a serum that would alter the human genetic code, making the subject stronger and faster. They succeeded but their victory was short lived. Not only had they created a super serum, but also an airborne virus. By 2025, seventy-five percent of the world's population had perished. The survivors, well their lives would never be the same.

175 A.V.

Ally is an Ordinary; a human immune to the virus. She lives in a settlement outside the City with her mother and twin brother, but lately it doesn't seem to be enough. She is wrestling between being with her family and volunteering to move to the City, where she can work for the Exceptionals.

Luke is an Exceptional; a superior human being. His ancestors were infected with the virus and lived through it, leaving their super human strength and special abilities to him. He has never given much thought to Ordinarys, despite pressure from his father to choose one from the ORC. But all of that changes when he meets Ally...

My suggestions don't really explain the Bible, but they are thought-provoking and fascinating if you like science.

Creation and Time

Beyond the Cosmos (I found this book really interesting.)

The Creator and the Cosmos

The Fingerprint of God

These are all by the same guy, and I really enjoyed them a great deal, so I fully recommend them to you.

I also enjoy Christian fantasy books, for example:

The Dragon King Trilogy: In the Hall of the Dragon King

The Warlords of Nin

The Sword and the Flame

The Pendragon Cycle: Taliesin

Merlin

Arthur

Pendragon

Grail

To be honest, I haven't read the last two, they weren't out yet when I read these books.

I also recommend some classics like Lilith by George MacDonald.

The Case for Christ

Anyway, that's all I can think of at this time. If I think of anything else, I'll update this list.

Favourite: Oh, so many, but the most recently read favourite/book I waited the whole summer for (School was closed-too lazy and unwilling to sign up for shitty local library) is Code Name Verity. Was worth the whole six week wait, I assure you. A simply stunning tale of friendship, Gestapo, WW2, the French Resistance and flying. Also other things, but I suck at describing books.

Currently reading: A book called Butterfly Summer. Halfway through, current rating: Okay, would maybe read once again if extremely bored. I don't regret starting to read it as such, but wouldn't recommend too heartily to anyone else as the fundemental plot idea is good but the writing itself needs improvement.

Would recommend: White Crow, the aforementioned Code Name Verity.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams and the sequel to that (Both excellent reads).

Finding Cassie Crazy is quite good if you want something more teen-fiction-y, plot can get a bit confusing at times due to about six main characters but it's set out in a novel (excuse the pun) way- in the form of letters/diary entries/other stuff/ noticeboard notices all put together.

Torn is excellent- At first glance, the plot looks like it might rather predictable and done before. I assure you, it's not. The only annoying bit is the ending. The book seems to cut off a good chapter or two before I'd like it to, if you know what I mean, but I'll look past that for now.

A great list of 6 very good books! (Especially love The Golem and the Jinni, which is amazing...)

There are also a lot of very, very good Middle Eastern 'flavored' SF/F books that are from non US/UK authors, and well worth seeking out. Or, skip the flavor, and pick up some books from Middle Eastern authors! The combination of Google and Amazon/Book Depository makes it surprisingly easy...

If you're interested, some starters:

Barely any mentions of Steelheartand Firefight? Two awesome Brandon Sanderson super hero / villain novels! This is the first instance ever where someone (besides a big comic publisher) created super powereds that were actually interesting and pretty awesome. The ending to Steelheart, and how things play out is truly genius in my opinion. You have to read it to know what i'm talking about...

u/xamueljones · 5 pointsr/rational

I'd like to recommend Rowena's Rescue which is a story with an old fashioned beginning about a princess who has been kidnapped by a wizard and her father, the king, has promised her hand in marriage to anyone who can rescue her. However, the princess in this story is very independent and has decided to rescue herself and therefore gain the right to her own hand and be able to decide her own destiny in life.

Her attempts at escape reads very much like a character who is attempting a dungeon crawl and while I wouldn't call it a rational story, there's a fair bit of munchkinry and puzzle solving.

Hey, this is late but here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VX1HC7P/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=east+food+court&qid=1565505129&s=gateway&sr=8-1

Definitely no pressure to purchase. It's not everyone's cup of tea. It's a YA dystopian novel about a society that lives in an airport--was a fun concept a just ran with. I'll be running a free promo sometime soon (basically, when Amazon lets me again). Maybe you can snag it then. Thanks for the interest!

Hi! So I'm not really sure exactly what genre of book you'd be interested in, but here are a couple of FREE Kindle books out right now from the bestseller list and with high reviews:

Highwater

Hope for Garbage

Truth Stained Lies

The Devil's Graveyards (This one has 11 5 star reviews and nothing else!)

The Timekeeper's Son

Reverb

A Family Affair

Pretty Little Liars (I watch the TV show...and so does my 32 year old husband...and we both really like it for being just fluff and teenage drama)

Unenchanted

Land

Hollowland

Nearly Departed in Deadwood

Hope you feel better!

I've just been re-watching these as well :)

These aren't detective stories, but if you want strong capable heroines, I'd recommend Tamora Pierce's books, particularly:

[Tricksters] (http://www.amazon.com/Tricksters-Daughter-Lioness-Tamora-Pierce/dp/0739451456/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334468727&sr=1-2) series

This heroine, Aly, has the most in common with Veronica (in terms of wit, slight cynicism, talents)

But also:
[The Song of the Lioness] (http://www.amazon.com/The-Song-Lioness-Quartet-Adventure/dp/0375825649) series
[The Immortals] (http://www.amazon.com/Immortals-Boxed-Wolf-Speaker-Emperor-Realms/dp/0375827005/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334468603&sr=1-4) series
[Protector of the Small] (http://www.amazon.com/Protector-Small-First-Squire-Knight/dp/0739446983/ref=sr_1_8?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334468653&sr=1-8) series

Since he likes making his own stories, Wizards of the Coast published a book about dragons and one about monsters from the D&D game that read like a kids' non-fiction catalog. It sounds like he has a love of fantasy and creativity that lend well to roleplaying games when he gets older. For someone who doesn't enjoy reading there is a payoff when you get to play a game if you read the book.

A Practical Guide to Monsters
A Practical Guide to Dragons

After looking this up, I found more Practical Guides from WotC. Keep looking if you are interested.

My bad, didn't notice the audiobook part, just the exciting combat part.

Patch 17; locked in game story (or maybe portal into game-world?), lots of great combat and multiple audiobooks. Character gets glitch-stuck in a locked expansion surrounded by demon NPCs, right as everyone who plays the game gets uploaded into it (there are some unexplained non-scientific stuff about that, that make me wonder if it's actually an upload and not really a portal story).

Adventures on Brad; dungeon crawling fantasy story containing no earthlings. Easier/lower level story, a trilogy, but the fights are decent for what I consider a YA level book.

The System Apocalypse; real life apocalypse story. Fighting is good, as is the writing, and there are 4 (5?) audiobooks already (and a few more books already published that haven't gotten an audio treatment).

Codename: Freedom; VRMMORPG, with zero magic to start but lots of fighting. Decent for a VR book, I'm not usually a fan of those but I've listened to the first two books and am looking forward to the third.

Arcane Survivalist; apocalypse caused by a portal-story (scientist semi-accidentally sends the system back though his portal into the real world). Action is great, though writing could have been better. Same writer wrote another story I've read, but I can't remember how much action there is in it.

Forever Fantasy Online; VRMMORPG turned portal-story. I'll admit the whole thing wasn't amazing, but you're just looking for action and I liked the action.

You're Not Allowed to Die; end of life single-player VR sim turned portal-story (the MC doesn't know that, though). This one is hard, as I liked it but the character starts with some insane OP equipment. Still, this and the sequel were both enjoyable.

The Land; I'm not even linking this one, people here have a hate-hardon for it. Still, as long as you look past the bro-ish behavior and tone, great books with lots of action.

u/18straightwhiskeys · 7 pointsr/booksuggestions

The Enchanted Forest series by Patricia C Wrede is engaging, witty, and sex-free.

The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak is wonderful for everyone of any age. It has lyrical writing, a story that sticks with you, and moving imagery. I can't recommend it enough.

Tamora Pierce's Tortall novels are great (I'd recommend starting with the Protector of the Small series or The Immortals series). There is some sex in them, but it's not graphic and it's far from the focus of the books.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathon Stroud is witty, well-paced, and engaging.

The Sabriel series by Garth Nix is pretty dark, but no more so than the ones you listed.

Let us know what you end up getting her!

First: you are trying to resolve an issue that most computer users won't experience.

Second: this issue wouldn't even exist if you weren't using pictures.

If you stored those treasured moments in word form, instead of picture form, you wouldn't have to hide them. These files could even be stored on the desktop.
She would see the text and either confuse it for a part of the masterworks of Stephanie Meyers, or she would think "Ew. Reading is yucky.".

If she ever asked, you could just simply say "Honey, those are the magical pieces of paper that make your sugarbear's computer box gears turn."

This explanation is even more likely to be accepted if you repeat it to her in a way that makes it sound like you are speaking to a baby. Doing this correctly will cause her current psychological frame of reference to "regress" to an earlier state, in which she will simply trust everything you say, implicitly.

I wish she would make an encyclopedia. I hate Pottermore. I want something like what Cassandra Clare did or (sorry!) Stephenie Meyer did. I think if she got a design team behind her it would be amazing. These books are amazing and the designers would kick ass at helping her. 1 2 3

I started reading the Codename: Freedom series last night. Only about 10 chapters in so far, but it seems pretty good so far. It did come out in 2017 though, so you may have already read it. The third book only just came out in August though.

This is a good book. I had a different book; from the Baby Sitters Club series.

Also, i admit to learning a little from the series "The Song of the Lioness Quartet (Alana: The first adventure/In the Hnd of the Goddess/ The woman who rides like a man/ Lioness Rampant). Basically a coming of age story about a girl who starts out dressed as a boy because she wants to learn how to be a knight. She is basically unprepaired to become a woman, and unexpectedly has her first period and thinks she is going to die. Only thing someone may be concerned about is that she is dressed as a boy for a good part of the story (some may see this as not empowering women), but i think it helps to address gender roles. There is some romance/sex in the novel, but it is targeted to a teen audience. http://www.amazon.com/The-Song-Lioness-Quartet-Adventure/product-reviews/0375825649/ref=cm_cr_dp_see_all_btm?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending

I just released a book about a necromancer in high school, with conservative Christian parents and an undead stalker.

[Through the Lichgate] (https://www.amazon.com/Through-Lichgate-Drama-Club-Presents-ebook/dp/B07D579MDR/)

Thana Ayers may seem like any other girl her age, struggling to balance schoolwork, drama club activities, and her religious parents. But at night, she battles unholy monstrosities with her own astonishing abilities to control the dead. Thana’s never lost a battle. That is, until a mysterious creature appears unlike any she has faced before.

This strange presence threatens to unravel Thana’s carefully balanced life and reveal her powers to the world. It also promises to show her the secrets of the lichgate and unlock her true power, but all power comes with a cost.

The book is 3.99 on Kindle, free on Kindle unlimited, and available in print for 12.99. You can find it here.
