I usually get these ones in black and nude for my base layers under pretty much everything. My usual sheer tights are pretty stretchy so I haven’t had to size up but if yours fit you really snug on their own you can size up for the thermals. Sometimes if I don’t want to lose the sheerness of my tights I’ll pair a nude thermal under the black sheer tights so they still maintain their usual look.

So they're not the cheapest thing on the face of the planet, but Glamory Perfect20 Stockings are pretty opaque, matte thigh highs that come in a "make-up" color to match (white) skin tones. I love mine. They feel really nice and stay up all day.

They also apparently make these guys that are pantyhose as opposed to stockings and 70 denier which would very opaque. I cannot, however, speak to how those look or feel because I don't own them.

I do however, own the hold-ups and another pair of stockings from them and have found them to be quite good quality and with a lot of sizes.

Edit to Add: If you haven't heard of them, there's a business called Sock Dreams that has SO MANY OPTIONS for all things sock and hosiery, maybe you can find something there.

Depending on how much detail/texture/pattern is on your dress, I agree with the other posters that a pair of pattern hose/tights tend to look more sophisticated than standard nylons.

I also agree that it would be crazy to go to a winter party without something on your legs! Girl, stay warm! Nude nylons are a stable and totally ok in many instances (I don't know where the whole "NO NYLONS" rule came from but boo on that).

I usually went with basic Hanes. They have them at Target and even though I order everything else on Amazon, stockings are one of those things that I just always picked up last minute at the store.

IMO the biggest thing to look for is a wide top band. If the top band is only like an inch it doesn't seem to hold up as well. Though, I've never gone with pricier brands so YMMV.

What are the rules about wearing textured/lace tights at work? Obviously straight up fishnets are a no, but what about other patterns? Too lingerie-y or not? Mine are similar to these and I work in a very business casual office, the rules are basically don't wear jeans and don't wear sneakers.

I wanted to wear a black shift dress today but also like to cover my legs because my office is cold, but black opaque tights with a black dress looked like I was going to a funeral.

These Vero Monte tights have held up well for me! I've owned them for 2 months now, bought on the recommendation from another lady on this sub. I wash them in a delicates mesh bag and hang to dry and I've had no issues with pilling or pulling/tearing yet (and I am pretty rough with my tights).
