All stuff I got from Amazon. The beard and wig came together (also came with stick on eyebrows, but they weren't very comfortable or visible so I didn't wear them), and the hat, robe, and satchel were also a package deal. Then I got some kind of bling necklace, the dollar signs multi-ring, and shutter shades which were advertised as "glow in the dark" though the glow only last about 5 minutes even though I put them under a bright light all day. I also got a long sherlock pipe that was very nice, totally legitimate (IE could actually be smoked from, though I didn't actually use it) and came in a nice storage box with felt or something inside, and was only $20.

All told, I probably spent about a hundred bucks on the costume. Just summed the current prices, $115.06 including shipping for the things that weren't available with Prime. I think that's a few dollars more than what I paid, some of the prices have fluctuated.

The beard and wig were pretty good quality IMO. The beard didn't stick on, but instead had a couple of straps that go around the back of your head and are covered by the wig. The wig was pretty thick and full of hair and looked very nice. Drinking was kind of bitch with the beard on; I drank out of bottles with moderate success if I was careful, but had to use a straw with anything from an open glass. After a while I started pulling the beard down so the mustache was below my mouth, to make it easier to drink.

The robe was nothing fancy, but looked good and wasn't too expensive. The color definitely isn't genuine but the beard/hair made the Gandalf part obvious to anyone who knew who Gandalf was. The hat and satchel were both made of very cheap thin foam, and the strap on the bag isn't adjustable I found it hung too low to be convenient. The hat also easily slid off of the wig, I had to use a few safety pins to attach it to the wig. LPT: Don't stab yourself in the skull with safety pins.

Both pieces of costume jewelry -- the necklace and the rings -- were cheap plastic. I probably could have gotten better quality stuff for a similar price, or gotten the same crap for cheaper if I tried, but it did the job. The necklace didn't have a clasp, you just slide it over your head, and it was a pretty tight squeeze. Definitely impossible to put it on or take it off without removing the wig, and someone with a particularly large head might not be able to put it on at all.

Some people "got" the costume better than others as was expected. Most people at least knew Gandalf, but I got some confused looks when I tried to explain the Cray part. A group of people took to calling me Wiz, I think as a combination of wizard and Wiz Khalifa. I really enjoyed the costume and I definitely want to use it again, especially since it was the most expensive one I've ever had. It was a lot of fun to put together and the general reaction was pretty positive, so I'd recommend it to someone who wants to put only small/moderate amount of effort for a pretty cool costume.

I'm on my way to a very standard, but large, mason jar bubbler.

The Vision:

An attractive, safe, economical, easily cleaned homemade bubbler constructed from a handled mason jar. A piece that my friends might look at and say, "Neat!," and not, "What is that? Is that safe to smoke out of?" Maybe I'll even decorate the outside with some color...

Materials so far:

  • 32oz Ashland Mason Jar with handle and lid

  • 14mm Scientific Glass Downstem 6 inches

  • Rubber grommets for attaching and sealing the downstem to the lid

  • Old bowl (just a regular old 14mm male bowl)

    Hang-ups/Questions:

  • I am stumped on the mouthpiece. I want something more attractive/finished-looking than a janky piece of tubing flopping about on top. I'm considering ordering some pipe stems as they're sure to be safe to pass smoke through, but then the question is how to attach and seal them to the lid. Also, will air flow through one of these narrow looking stems be sufficient to clear a piece just smaller than your standard Nalgene bottle? If anyone has suggestions for a mouthpiece other than tubing or wants to convince me that the pipe stem is a go, I'm all ears.

  • Drilling. What's the best way to drill a hole through mason jar lids?

  • Adhesives. What glue could I use to safely secure the grommet that surrounds the downstem to the edges of the hole through the lid? Or is an adhesive not necessary? I don't want any holes sucking air.

  • How might I go about decorating the outside of a mason jar?

Anyone who read this far, I commend you. Thanks for any assistance. This will be my first homemade piece besides a G-bong.

Pipe smoker here. The issue with wood pipes being used for weed is that they get very clogged, they're really difficult to clean, and if it's a proper briar pipe, the pores in the wood absorb a lot of resin and such. My suggestion is to go with something with that look, but a better material, like these neat stone pipes: https://www.amazon.com/Unique-Churchwarden-Style-Handcrafted-Carved/dp/B07JQ3W72S

That way you're using a safe material (lots of Chinese pipes are made from toxic mystery woods and plastics), it'll be easy to clean, function better, and look awesome as a display!

u/blenheim45 · 1 pointr/PipeTobacco

Won't say this is the best price, or whether it is the exact image on your original pipe, but it looked like a "sultan" to me. Lots of variations on that theme and this is just one

meerschaums are great smokers, BUT they tend to fragile. Remind me to tell you the story of a pipe friend of mine who lit his meer, after it spent a cold winter's night in his garage, and as it heated up it decided to imitate a hand grenade... much to his surprise. As he tells the story it went more "CRACK" than "Boom", but literally flew apart and he was left with the stem in his mouth and meerschaum pieces scattered on the floor... and the burning tobacco in his lap. Another installment paid to the University of Pipe Smoking. LOL

I've been smoking cigars for the past 8 months. I wanted to try pipes to change up my rotation. I have a few questions:

  1. Bought a corn cob pipe from Amazon since it was one of the cheapest I found with good reviews. Is this good enough to start off with? I also got a pipe tool and pipe cleaners as they were frequently bought together.

  2. Local shop sold me a pouch of Captain black gold. He said it was mild and non flavored. I don't really like infused/flavored cigars, but I smoked a few to start since that's what people always recommend. I learned quickly that staright tobacco flavor is what I enjoy. Any other recommendations coming from someone smoking medium bodied cigars?

  3. How do I store pipe tobacco? Do they need to be properly humidified like cigars? Is it okay to keep them in the pouch they came in?

  4. I watched a few videos on how to light it. It looks pretty straight forward. Similar to cigars, you don't want to draw too fast and too frequently as to not heat it up too much and nuke the flavors. Do you puff every minute or so like cigars to keep them lit? Or does it depend on how you pack it? If I have to put down the pipe for say a few hours, is it still good to relight? For cigars, you can cut off the ash and expose fresh tobacco and relight it as usual.

  5. What's the smoke time typically? Any issues with packing halfway for shorter smokes, like for lunch breaks or when it's really cold outside?

I made a post on here earlier, but removed it as I felt it was better suited here:

I'll skip the boring details of my newfound interest in pipe smoking and get right to it...

I've been looking at Mr Brog's lately as an introductory pipe. But looking at some kits on Amazon, there are options that could save me some money (trying to be budget friendly, as I'm still settling into my new job.)

Basically, I'm wondering if the additional cost to buy a Brog and accessories would justify the purchase over something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Smoking-FeelGlad-Tobacco-Accessories-wooden/dp/B01MY15BZ3/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1498272403&sr=8-4&keywords=tobacco+pipe+kit

I've really been eyeballing the Poker: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DPQ1H4S/ref=crt_ewc_title_dp_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ALK9TZQVPJXAA but I don't know if I would be getting $20 more out of it than in the afformentioned pipe, so I figured I'd ask the fine patrons of /r/PipeTobacco.

Thanks guys.

u/Rootner · 6 pointsr/PipeTobacco

I have this same pipe. The stem is made out of what feels to be aluminum (if you actually buy it you will see that the pattern of the stem is cheaply printed on), and the fittings are plastic witch warp very easy. It has a decently snug fit for the first couple smokes. BUT after that the fit becomes so loose that it can barley hold its self together. If you look closely at the pictures you can see the obvious gaps where the components do not fit properly. Under the specs it says "High Quality Wood", and I guess you could call it that if high quality is soft and prone to dent wood that smokes hotter than an oven. Now I'm no professional but I would give this pipe a 1.5 out of 10. You would be better off to save up $10 more or so and a buy something infinitely better both cosmetically and fictionally. This is my favorite pipe I own, www.amazon.com/Grabow-Golden-Duke-Textured-Tobacco/dp/B005CALO30/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1404381790&sr=8-16&keywords=dr.+grabow and its only $30 new. But I'd recommend a pipe with a brand name or a makers' name/mark, that is usually the safest way to go. Hope I helped in any way. I just don't want to see anyone waste money on that sham of a pipe.

u/Synthetic_fox · 1 pointr/PipeTobacco

I'm glad to hear that! As far as I know they can be pretty hit or miss quality wise, though for the most part they're pretty solid little pipes.

I found this and it looks a lot like the pipe you have there. Hope this helps! Again, glad you're enjoying this wonderful hobby!

u/FeloniousFunk · 8 pointsr/saplings

Amazon is pretty strict about paraphernalia so I doubt any of these are Prime-eligible, but it's out there if you know what to search for.

You've got a plethora of classic tobacco pipes with standouts like these and these if you're willing to spend some cash on a nice looking pipe, although they aren't ideal for weed since they aren't carbed.

If you don't want to look so "old-timey" when smoking, there's also a wide selection of cheap, gimmicky metal pipes and one-hitters that get the job done, but I would consider these a waste of money. They have cheap glass bowls and gimmicky glass bubblers that are a step above but not much better.

Amazon also has a shitload of mini-hookahs in both glass and acryllic that can be re-purposed as bubblers. The smaller, the more efficient.

Personally, I would pick out a nice glass slide or ash catcher combo (either 18mm or 14mm). With a matching downstem, any sort of bottle, and some help from /r/StonerEngineering, you can make a dank-ass bong to hold you over until you buy a fully-glass piece from somewhere else. Another option you have is to buy a J-Hook Adapter which basically turns any ash catcher into a Sherlock-style bubbler. If you do that, I would definitely recommend a double ash catcher of some sort (you will need to buy a slide too). These are very fragile though.

Welcome! Pipe smoking is the best way to smoke tobacco, lots of flavor variety at a lower cost. However, almost everyone who first tries to smoke a pipe burns their tongue so it’a helpful to have a guide.

In these videos you can have an old marine teach you step by step how to properly pack, light and smoke a pipe. Enjoy!

I do have a corncob on the way and I'm excited to check that out.
Would love some suggestions on a smaller bowl pipe for a 5 minute smoke. This one is pretty large for a quick smoke during the day but is great for a long relaxing evening smoke.

The Rack is a F.E.S.S. 12 pipe 2 tiered stand in black found on amazon. My wife got it from my wish list. I really like it the "wells" that hold the pipes are pretty large (as y ou can see they hold that giant dragon pipe very easily) and since I only have 4 pipes, I'm sharing with my son.

The Pipes (from left to right, starting in the top row)

  1. F.E.S.S. 14" Churchwarden (My Son's)
  2. Pear Wood Hand Carved Tobacco Smoking Pipe "Dragon II" + Pouch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006NA3N5A/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_2c0Nub0YYH37G (My Son's)
  3. Kriswill rusticated bulldog Estate Pipe (Mine)
  4. Roma black gloss bent billiard (Mine)
  5. Crown (Canadian shape?) straight pipe (My Son's)
  6. Mississippi Meerschaum cheapo corncob (Mine) that I bought just to try out some tobacco in a shop because I didn't have my pipe with me.
  7. Design Berlin Sandblasted (I'm guessing a lumberman shape - still not too good on the shapes yet) that I got a pipe shop that was closing down in Annapolis, MD. (Mine)

Get a merschaum corn cob pipe. Cheap and smokes good. I got mine at a gas station. I would recommend buying the tobacco from a specialty store, the cheap stuff like Half n Half in pouches is pretty harsh. Captain Black is ok.

u/oldtreefarms · 1 pointr/eldertrees

see above.

What I was going for was an herbal, slightly infused cannabis smoke which smoked like a tobacco cavendish without the harmful nicotine.

Basically I smoked a pipe in college and was missing it, but certainly unwilling to go back to smoking nicotine, so I decided to try my own herbal mixture.

Recipe
----------

Base - 3 parts
-----

  • damiana
  • lotus leaf
  • mullien leaf

    Flavor Amendments - 2 parts
    ------------------------
  • kate's blend
  • Mugwort
  • Blue Lotus flowers
  • Sacred Lotus stamens
  • Dried cannabis trim (don't add this, it got me nothing but harsh)

    Casing
    --------
  • Two parts Cap'n Morgan 100 proof Rum
  • One part Vegetable Glycerin
  • Herb, BHO, QWISO, whatever you can afford

    Process
    ---------
Cook it around 180 in a double broiler for a looooooooong time, I do 12 hours on and 12 off for three days. The more weed, obviously, the better.

Mix the base together, then in a separate bowl mix your amendment.
The base should burn smoother and longer, the amendments are for flavor and mild sedative effects.

Add two parts amendments to three parts base.
Stir in the casing, below, then place on a cookie sheet to toast the whole thing for about half an hour to 45 minutes in a 190 degree oven to dry it a bit.

Pull it out, dust to taste with lotus powder.

Smoke it in a filtered pipe. These cheap ones on Amazon are lovely and can take an activated charcoal filter.
It won't be like weed, just a chill non-tobacco smoke.

haha i actually have a churchwarden very similar to this. I've named it Gandalf. It seems to "magically" make the bowl last longer. It's wonderful.

u/ArtisticProgrammer · 1 pointr/Sculpture

You can make your own, there are instructions online. But they are very cheap to buy, and last quite a while.

I used to work in the tobacco industry and a $5 corn cob pipe smokes better than a $300 wooden pipe.

I recommend this one. Careful, because some of the pipes on amazon are actually very tiny and don't smoke well.

I have one of the Raw Terracotta Stones (though mine is the leaf one. Same thing) and I love it.

Toss it in for a little while and it rehydrates it. Just don't leave it too long.

u/smackley · 3 pointsr/electronic_cigarette

I could be wrong but it looks like a Sanda tobacco pipe (example) with a horn style switch (example) and it has a bowl cap containing the battery and a usb charging circuit. Bowl cap might even be a coin?

edit - add links to source your own parts if desired to make one.

You can also use orange or apple, or even products like Boveda or RAW Humidfying stone.

Apparently iceberg lettuce can help too. But I like the ceramic products as they don't produce mold when forgotten about (this happened to me. lost a whole jar)

Be very aware that the stem and extension are fairly fragile and the stem broke off in the filter extension a few months after I bought it.
