I use this rolling tote. It's great if I have to walk home, because it drastically increases how much I can transport. The price has gone up since I got it, but I think it's worthwhile since I can use it as a carryon on the train as well.

Since you are traveling to places that have a plastic bag tax, have you considered bringing along a small reusable tote? When going to tournaments I bring only what I need to play. One deck, mat, dice, sleeves, pen & paper. I carry it in a bad designed as a theft deterrent I got from Amazon and leave nothing valuable in my truck. I hope the link below works I'm on mobile but I can not recommend this bag enough.
