(Part 2) Reddit mentions: The best fidget toys

I was suggesting on another post the thin cotton gloves - can get on amazon and I think would work well with thumb/finger pickers. Put some lotion on and glove over it at night as well to help healing process.

Also I think I will link a couple little things that have been helping me a lot now.

The ring I have on my index finger and can spin it with my thumb and that spinner has a nice weight to it and spins super easy just holding between thumb and a finger - these are two that have been the most helpful so far as far as calm hand gadgets

Give him something to distract him from his tantrums.

You could try incentivizing it, or (with Dad’s permission) just flat out give it to him. Another option is to say that he can use it while he participated in scouts (but can’t take it home).

I’m not a doctor, or anything of that sort. I’m not trying to dismiss or diagnose anything. I’m just trying to think outside the cube... box on this one.

Another option, for the dad to buy, might be a weighted jacket (eg like this ). My wife and I got both our boys weighted blankets for at home, and at least for my oldest it seems to work really well when he gets super worked up. And he has not been diagnosed on the spectrum.

It’s at least worth discussing with dad. What’s important here is the boy’s well being and trying to find ways to get him to calm down.

If you remember, please update us. I’d love to know if anyone’s suggestions helped in anyway.

This sort of card box plus some sheets of felt work great, and the whole "project" can probably be done shopping locally at a craft store, a game store, and about $5.

Amazon has vaguely the same thing with pre-made foam, if you don't wanna DIY and just want a box to store them. These run about $15.

Pelican cases with custom inserts like that are significantly more expensive (I think around $70? Don't recall), but obviously cooler from all perspectives. I personally have both one of those amazon boxes and a DIY one to hold my ~20 spinners. I'd be interested in the Pelican one if I was transporting them a lot, but for me it's just storage.

I have ADHD and I bit my nails pretty badly too. It's been 79 days since I've last bit my nails.

I also use a goal tracker app where I "x" out the days I haven't bitten to help keep me on track.

My nails tend to split it peel and I use Nailtiques formula 2 and I think it works because it feels a lot less and I've had to actually cut and file my nails!

If my nails do split or break I use a nail file to shape them.

I've been biting my nails for over 20 years and this has been my best streak. I've relapsed twice in my previous streaks but this has definitely been the longest.

I find that a fidget cube fulfilled my brain's "need" to make me bite my nails. I reckon fidgeting with it sends stimulii from my fingers to my brain that blocks the "bite" impulse. I tend to find that I need to use the fidget cube when I'm watching someone give a presentation for example.

Once I did that for a week, my nails grew and I found it easier not to bite them. Now I've been able to stop biting my nails.

After that, I got a manicure set to keep my nails trimmed nicely, making it even easier to not bite them.

I recommend a keyring fidget for this. I always carry it in my pocket and also bought this when it was cheaper and used an old purse metal chain to hook it up to my keys, looks almost like a pocket watch. Both of them helped me a lot with my hand fidgets.

I have, but they definitely aren't a cure. I kind of have to alternate between them or I get bored and stop using one. The ones I use are:
-- a fidget cube (in my case, a fidget dodecagon
-- a tangle toy
-- thinking putty


I really want to get a spinner ring, but I keep forgetting to measure my ring size for my thumb and I want it to fit right.

I realize this isn’t what you’re asking for but I actually prefer the fidget pad. It’s got similar features to the cube but fits much nicer in your hands.

Also, if the person really is ticking their pen or whatever and can't stop, ask if they could find something silent to manipulate so they don't distract everyone else.

Fidget cubes have silent sides that satisfy the "need to click" without being as distracting to others. Not that they have to get one, it's just a fun little alternative.

EDIT: and unfortunately, if they can't turn it off or turn it down for medical reasons, I think you will need to invest in some noise-canceling earplugs/headphones to boost your concentration.

I have severe dental anxiety so I know where you're coming from OP! I really like these anxiety toys called Boinks. I have ADHD so I also use them as a fidget toy, but when I'm at the dentist I always be sure to bring a couple along. It keeps my hands busy and my brain occupied.

Really, it makes sense that the internet is created as a tool for ADHD. It boggles the mind how often the world calls us disordered, when they use our tools - drugs, toys, coping mechanisms - to such an extent that it becomes abusive in their communities. With the internet, it’s like they want to be more like us. I don’t get it.
