  1. Yes. Extra underwear is nicer than extra v-necks though. If you want to bring more than 3 v-necks, you could wear an extra one under your shirt to save room in your bag.
  2. Yes you can and it's not a bad idea. They're either crew or mid-calf length. I bought extra at the exchange, brand was Pro-Feet and MUCH more comfortable than the socks you're issued.
  3. Just bring your SS card and license.
  4. Yes but if you're going carry-on, there's a limit to the size.
  5. One bag only. I'd recommend using a different bag from the CG duffel bag. I didn't even get one from my recruiter (which I'm glad I didn't) because nearly every other person used theirs and had a hard time finding it. I got an Everest duffel bag off Amazon, $14, great bag and I'm still using it. Red and blue are cheap right now and will stand out. Mine was black so I tied a red bandana and a name tag on.
  6. Only the extra toiletries I kept in the personal ditty bag. You'll get a toiletry bag full of stuff that you'll keep in your rack for "quick" access.
  7. Not necessary but I did see people with these zip up pouch kits for writing letters. I know they can be bought at the exchange, it looked handy and organized. Maybe look into those. Bring some stamps with you too. Do not write letters in the notebook they issue you.
  8. Not necessary. You'll wash your civilian clothes the second day before storing them. Maybe just bring a spare shirt, socks, and underwear for the night at MEPS, that's what I did. I wore the same pants.
  9. I'd recommend carry-on. It was my first time flying and my flight ended up being delayed for 5 hours and had to run through Philly airport to the USO, last ones to arrive and showed up late to Cape May. Going carry-on saved a lot of hassle. Razors will be no problem as long as they're packaged in some way. IMPORTANT: Make sure your packages of razors are easy to get into, maybe take a knife and cut a slice into the package before packing your bag. At Cape May they make you spread out everything in your bag on a table and I had to bite my way into a blister package of razors because there are no scissors or knives to use.

Also here's a nice bit of info: I had a shipmate who got through TSA fine with his double edge/safety razor and package of individual blades. TSA only made him throw out the one razor that wasn't packaged. When our belongings were being inspected at Cape May, a CC said it was fine for him to keep and use.

Hope this info helps. Try not to overload your bag; bring cash or a debit card to buy things from the exchange (you'll be brought there pretty early on to buy things you need) as well as the Lucky Bag (thrift store for uniforms/clothing).

When I was at the exchange, I bought an extra toothbrush, shaving cream, socks, and a towel as well as some other things I needed. I also bought a new pair of PF gear but wasn't aware that I could buy the same PF gear for like $5 at the lucky bag so keep that in mind. Definitely buy an extra PF roll from the Lucky Bag. Some people also bought an extra cover (hat). Not a bad idea.

Good luck at boot camp! Be quick and loud. Help your shipmates when you can. Always keep your rack locked. Always, always. Learn the chain of command as early as possible, there's lots of valuable time to use to study while waiting around the first week.

Sea to Summit Duffle. I have a North Face Base Camp and a Patagonia Black Hole and this bag easily wins out IMO. It wasn't even on my radar until earlier this week. But after checking it out in a store the other day I immediately ordered one. Don't be fooled by all of their other ultra-light products, this is just as burly as the Base Camp but with a far better strap setup (check out the youtube link) and better (lockable) dual track zippers. Only downside is the lack of external organization pockets, which doesn't bother me much on this type of bag.

While the Base Camp, albeit a great bag, is over shadowed by the Sea to Summit which IMO fills the same niche only better. The Black Hole is still a great option if you're fine trading a bit of durability for weight savings, however the straps aren't quite as nice as the Sea to Summit and it doesn't offer a shoulder carry configuration.

I recommend the 45L to be carry-on legal although there are reviews reporting that people have carried on the 65L just fine despite technically being oversized. Red 45L is on sale at amazon for $90 currently. The 65L will run you full retail at $140.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding the Base Camp, Black Hole, or Sea to Summit bags.

Here are a couple tips and tricks from personal experience when I marched:

  • If you can afford it, get a big rolling duffle like this one. They are pricier, but if you plan on marching multiple years, a high quality one should last you at least 3 seasons.
  • An air mattress is something else you shouldn't go cheap on, I really recommend getting an AeoroBed. The cheap Intex brand that Walmart sells may be tempting, but I know so many people that couldn't last an entire season with an Intex bed. My AeoroBed got me 2.5 years before it crapped out mid way through my ageout summer.
  • As others have said, feet are your most important asset. Don't go cheap on shoes and bring plenty of socks.
  • Microfiber camping towels are useful because they'll save packing space and dry faster than a normal towel.
  • Don't bring regular laundry detergent, get those Tide Pods, they are much easier to store and you don't risk a liquid spill. 10-12 should be enough to get you through the season (2 per laundry day).
  • Gallon zip lock bags are incredibly useful for storing liquids such as your bath soap, sunscreen, etc. There's nothing worse than opening your suitcase at a housing site at 3 AM to discover your shampoo spilled all over your bag.
  • Concerning sunscreen - if you have fair skin, don't get anything less than SPF 50 and apply BEFORE EVERY BLOCK. Bad sunburns can seriously ruin your summer. I recommend getting cream over spray - it's cheaper, bottles last longer, and it usually works better.
  • Concerning showering - if you don't already, use a loofa. It will do a much better job of getting the dirt out, and you'll find that you'll use less soap per shower. There's nothing worse than running out of soap with a week before your next Walmart run.

I could probably write a whole book about packing tips, but these are probably some of the most important. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions!

If anyone needs a weekender bag, I can wholeheartedly recommend this one from Amazon as a great budget option. I got one for Christmas, and waxed it with otter wax, and then didn't use it until this past weekend. But it worked great for a few days worth of stuff and I was really impressed with the pockets. Only thing that would make it better would be a shoe compartment, but I'm fine without for this price. Oh, and a grey strap to match the grey canvas would have been nice as well. I just wanted to state this in case anyone is looking for a cheap weekend bag option.

Spent the weekend on the beaches of Lake Michigan and had a great time. The lake was choppy as hell so we didn't get to swim really, but we had a fun time nonetheless. It felt real nice to get away for a weekend.

u/rawwwse · 4 pointsr/Harley

Yeah... There’s not much to it, but It works for me since I don’t like side-bags (there’s a small swingarm bag as well on the opposite side that you can’t see in this pic).

I bit the bullet and bought a detachable Harley sissy bar for the back, with an integrated luggage rack (you can see my jacket bundled up on it behind the duffel).

When I pack for more than a day I use that duffel bag with a medium/large spider bungee cord (also from HD), on top of the rear seat so it doesn’t rub on the paint. Packs enough for a long weekend easily, maybe a bit more than a week in the summer with lighter clothes.

Best part is, if you pack it correctly—with the soft stuff towards your back—it makes for a great backrest on long rides!

u/3rd_in_line · 7 pointsr/solotravel

There was nothing that I left at home that I wished I had brought with me. But there were things that I brought with me that I should have left at home. You can always buy things along the way - clothes are the easiest to buy, but if you have a favourite style/brand of underwear, that would be the only thing I would recommend you take enough of.

Minimize adapters, chargers, cords as much as you can. I found that a good power board/strip (with USB) and 3m cord came in very handy, similar to this, where you can plug in your gadgets, etc from your country, but just use one adapter. And the long cords helps in hotel rooms and apartments so you can maximise your work area.

A large collapsible umbrella. Many here I am sure would find it unnecessary, but if you are travelling for work (in tropical areas especially) and need to get places dry, a good large umbrella is worth its weight in gold. You might only use it a few times a month, but it keeps you and your things dry. Don't go for a small "travel size" one, get a large, automatic-opening one like this.

It does depend on how much you will be moving around. If you are only moving every 2-3 weeks, that would be very different to if you were moving every 2-3 days. Too much luggage is just a PITA to get to from hotels/airports, no matter who is paying for it. I used a baglike this one and started with 20kg (absolutely full!), but now I have left some things behind and it is 16kg, plus I always have a small backpack for my laptop/electronics and a change of clothes for carryon. Less is best.

u/Hamletpiano · 2 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

Shoes--those Teva/Chaco/etc hiking sandals will probably be fine since Cambodia is pretty hot and humid; especially if you're going to jungles or beaches, you probably want footwear that is relatively waterproof and easy to clean (as opposed to full-on trekking shoes). You can get some less utilitarian-looking sandals that are more versatile but still comfy for long walks. E.g. these or these

Luggage--it can be a bit of a pain carrying wheeled luggage around, depending on your location. Maybe opt for a duffel bag/backpack with wheels like this orthis or this so you have different carrying options? Even if you dislike backpacks, I'd go for something with at least shoulder straps.

As for tech, I basically just bring a folding keyboard in case I want to do some lengthy typing--and maybe my 10" Windows tablet if I actually need to do some work. I wouldn't weigh yourself down with a laptop or risk it getting stolen in a hostel.

Clothes--I'm a big fan of wrap skirts (e.g. this, this because they're so easy to put on and take off, and don't look too . They made for very versatile outfits wearing swimsuits underneath (e.g. trekking in the jungle where you're bound to cross a handful of rivers, I just put my wrap skirt and shirt in my dry bag and crossed in my swimsuit). When I'm traveling, comfort and versatility are key for me; I bring a nice sundress or two, but otherwise I'm in a tank/casual button up and sports bra, and a wrap skirt or shorts. Keep in mind that you do have to dress modestly when visiting temples--normal clothes are fine, it's just that you can't walk in with just a bathing suit and short shorts.

------

As for roughing it--hostels in SEA are pretty decent--I've definitely stayed in some that felt like nice hotels. Honestly the main thing is just wearing comfy shoes and clothes appropriate for the humid weather.

I love this pack. Can fit rope, trad gear, shoes and lunch. Amazing for everything else, plane travel included. Sturdy build at a good price. I'm sure other packs are great too, just my 2 cents.

Agreed, rolling bags are for the elderly that cannot carry their own stuff anymore. No one under the age of 60 should use a rolling bag, ever.

Your best bet is to get a goodlooking duffle, that would be both: easy to carry and professionally looking.

My suggestions:

a) http://sdrtraveller.com/products/d3-traveller (not cheap but probably the best bag out there)

b) http://www.nomanwalksalone.com/index.php/black-booth-pack-3-way-duffle-bag.html (porter is ja japanese brand that makes amazing bags)

c) http://www.amazon.com/Fjallraven-24200-550-P-Duffel-No-4-Daypack/dp/B00G4ZX1S8/ref=pd_sim_sg_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0NPGHAW64SYC8M327YBM (this is the budget option and comes in different sizes)

Whatever you do: Dont go backpack (you will look like a teenager or outdoor freak) dont go rolling suitcase (see above).

u/alkasm · 5 pointsr/onebag

I have the same bag from a different brand (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BUQDJLE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) (there's a dozen brands carrying this exact bag, probably all from Alibaba or something) and I would heavily suggest to consider another bag. I really like the way this bag looks and I use it quite often, but it's very much a weekender for when I take a trip in my car. For traveling around otherwise, I would not at all recommend it for a number of reasons:

  1. Meh quality. As stated above, this is a mass-produced cheap bag. Looks nice and mine has held up well using it a good bit for the past year, but I wouldn't at all expect it to hold up to tons of travel.
  2. Bad load-distribution. This thing sucks to carry when it's relatively full. Shoulder strap is also uncomfortable.
  3. Bad organization. There is a small side pocket on the outside, a top-load pocket on the outside about the size of a ziplock, and a double-pocket inside about the same size. Otherwise it's just a wide open bag. I've put my laptop in a couple times and really wasn't comfortable with it, it's not protected at all and since the bag can be a bit loose it will slide around in there. Similarly clothes don't stay very organized when it's moving around.
  4. Small size. Overall it's an "oversized" weekender but it's still small as a duffel bag. I have a 40L Osprey Fairpoint which definitely seems smaller when you open them both up, but I'm able to fit almost the same amount in either bag.
  5. Security wise, this has nothing. The material isn't particularly strong, there's not multiple zippers for locking, zippers aren't hidden, no straps over the zippers, etc.

The only plus with this bag for travel is since it is a bit looser up top it's nicer than a mid-size travel bag for electronics that are awkward sizes, like a camera, power strip, power inverters, etc. If you want a bag that you can toss in your car and not hulk around with you, then sure it's a cheap enough bag that looks simple and good that you could use for probably a few years. Otherwise, wouldn't recommend.

Depending on where you're traveling and for how long, I'd suggest maybe considering a good backpack with a detachable day bag.

Never tried the Amazon brand but the samsonite duffel has been great for us...no holes and it holds a massive amount of stuff. Great for household moves as it swallows up clothes and shoes like you wouldn't believe. We have four of them and use them yearly for transatlantic hauling.

I haven't found this bag, but here's some similar bags that I liked:

Affordable- not my favorite leather style, but it looks like it's good quality:

More expensive: this one is gorgeous and made in America by Lotuff, but still out of my price range:

High-end- British company Mulberry makes this. If I had a meth empire, this is the one I would buy:

Check through Floto's store on Amazon, they have some amazing quality leather goods for extremely good prices

I have this weekender bag and judging by the quality of the leather and craftsmanship, it's going to last me decades and get better with age

I travel every other weekend, usually a two to three nights stay. Baring the obvious underwear and toiletries, I'd say I take:

  • One pair of jeans (plus the ones I will be wearing to travel in)
  • Couple of henley's/t-shirts (depending on time of the year)
  • A flannel shirt
  • OCBD (for going to dinner)
  • A knit jumper
  • Pair of casual shoes (New Balance or Converse, I'll most likely be wearing boots whilst I travel)
  • Laptop and chargers
  • GoPro and cable
  • Book
  • Diary
  • Potentially some workout gear

Accessories like belt, watch, etc will already be on me at the time, same as chukka boots. I like to travel as lightly as possible due to the fact I have to take a two trains, and the London Underground, at peak hours on a Friday evening. Getting through the crowds is tough enough, I don't want to be weighed down any more than I need to be.
If you're interested, this is the bag I use - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Herschel-Supply-Company-Duffel-Liters/dp/B0077CLCWO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1487790968&sr=8-1&keywords=herschel%2Bnovel%2Bduffle%2Bbag&th=1

I didn't pay full price for it, I got it in a sale. I'd recommend it, solely on the fact it has a separate compartment for shoes. Although, I imagine many other bags have that function.

I have their canvas weekend bag. Quality seems decent for the price and I got loads of compliments on it. Was a great size for a long weekend to Germany recently and was small enough to fit in cabin storage.

Not a logo, not Black Friday, but I went this route and have been pretty satisfied for 2 months.

I just ordered this one from Herschel and I review it for you when I get it next Tuesday. I know Herschel has a good reputation and amazon has really painless returns (and I still have my free Prime).

I looked at the Target one in my local store and it seemed a little too small to carry a spare pair of shoes and two sets of clothes. Since your luggage is something you'll use for years its usually worth getting something more expensive to suit your needs more closely. I didn't go with the Everlane because I may want a shoulder strap sometimes (I'm 6'4 so the 12" drop handles aren't good for slinging around my shoulder).

maybe something like this then? It's not bad for the price. Looks about $75.00 right now.

Otherwise have everyone pack a legit duffel bag. I bet four of those suckers would fit pretty easily in the trunk.

Still think you should pack light though.

I have this one that I like. I love the shoe compartment.

This duffle bag from "S Zone" on Amazon has a ton of great reviews and it looks great. I went for it myself and I gotta say, at $50, it's an absolute steal. I'd have been content with my purchase even at $100.

I would still suggest avoiding them. I got a Floto one to match my Cenzo duffel. Amazing quality, and lifetime guarantee. Floto and Cenzo get ignored in the Italian leatherware scene for reasons unknown to me, but I'm guessing that it has to do with their extremely affordable pricetag and the fact that they deal on sites like ebay and amazon.

I have this bag. Herschel Supply Co. Novel Duffel Bag

Its perfect for a weekend bag. I used it for a weekend trip to pittsburgh and had clothes for the weekend and extra clothes just incase. Plus shoes, towels and my dopp kit.

You can stick with a duffel bag, just make sure it is of good material and you should be fine. Canvas or leather.

Amazon sells a samsonite duffel that I bought before coming home on the train across country. Cheap and fit 3 panniers worth, handlebar bag and tent inside (I used one pannier as a carry on). I have a student amazon prime account, so I could order it ahead knowing that it'd be at my destination in 2 days.

boom

that thing has held up like a champ for me

I just bought a couple of these for our karting gear (one each for my kid and me) — fits helmet, suits, rib protection, shoes, etc with room to spare. Super lightweight and can’t beat the price!

As far as souvenirs go, my airline allows a free checked bag, so I bought this packable duffel bag to stow away in my luggage on the way there. On the way back I plan to pack it full of any non-fragile things and put the more precious souvenirs in my carryon.

Of course, I plan on buying lots of fabric items and plastic trinkets, but if you are buying whiskey bottles and pottery this may not work for you.

u/ML1310 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'm in the same position as you. If money wasn't an issue I would get the Filson medium duffle. I've been looking into this bag on Amazon and am thinking about pulling the trigger soon due to reasonable price and good reviews.

I use an oversized duffel to put my gear and backpack in. The added benefit is it protects your backpack and prevents any straps from being torn off or ripped during baggage handling.

u/cealion · 3 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

Do you mean a literal bag like this one or a suitcase?

u/ConflictedJew · 25 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I’m seeing the same bag for $55 from Amazon too.

A weekender bag maybe? Something like this or this.

u/2ofSorts · 1 pointr/motocamping

It is not water proof, but I honestly I've had waterproof bags and they fail after a bit in one way or another. So I got a very well reviewed cheap 20 dollar water resistant bag and I line the whole thing with a very thick trash bag. The trash bag inside will last quite a while and it's cheap.

u/canekicker · 50 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

So I've had this bag for three years but in grey. It's fine but anything more than $55 and you're probably better looking elsewhere.

Pros :

  • relatively light
  • spacious with a shoe compartment and interior pockets

    Cons :

  • The materials and construction are mediocre: It's fine for a gym bag/easy weekend bag but I'm not confident that it'll hold up to a lot of abuse. That said it's lasted for three years so...
  • The handle (which is leatherish for grey or black) is a pretty horrid vinyl material.
  • The shoulder strap clip squeaks so damn much. This may only be my bag but it's annoying

We wanted something more like a gym bag, and a bunch of pouches to throw in there, but we couldn't find pouches we like.

This size combined with the relative lack of stuff inside means that we can throw in an outfit for the evening and we've just got a single bag to carry.

u/zombie_katzu · 2 pointsr/bandmembers

Soft sides, so it's collapseable. Larger than gym bag, smaller than a suitcase. This one's just a little on the small side for us. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071CGD1TX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PiwRCb6T90CK3

I threw my two Ortlieb panniers, handlebar bag and tent into http://www.amazon.com/Samsonite-Tote--Duffle-Luggage-Black/dp/B003KR1K40 when I went from US to Europe. Very lightweight and compact when folded up.

I've been on the lookout for an affordable waxed cotton duffel, but I'm not that thrilled with the design on the First River bag. I may just go leather... I've been looking at these which aren't that much more.
