At 5 months, yeah!
As soon as I was cleared to get back in the water, ~5 weeks, I started hitting it hard. I pulled my workouts for a month and I did open turns for a while, then one leg flip turns. As PT progressed into stronger leg presses, I started using both legs to push off the wall.
Listen to your knee and push yourself some. If you need to take a break take one. I am part of a masters team and I just sat out some sets when it didn't feel right.
Start off easy and pull.
Can do some walking in shallower water to help strengthen leg.
If you like swimming, invest in some Neoprene shorts like these. Once you feel like you can kick and not just pull, these allow you to rest your legs if your knee starts hurting. It will also make you faster. (There are other brands, Roka's and TYR's are nice too. Both on Amazon.)
First off good for you.. As far as clothes , I would recommend you just get a simple tri-suit like this one.. (https://www.amazon.com/Pearl-iZUMi-Womens-Select-Pursuit/dp/B074L1Z6ZW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1539216471&sr=8-3&keywords=womens+tri+suit) ~ $70 and a sports bra woudl do the trick..

Even if you dont do another triathlon the Trisuit can be used for cycling or its easy to re-sell.. The nice thing about a trisuit, its one piece you put on in the morning, and just wear it through all three events, then peel it off after the race.. easy .. Swimming in Running clothes may cause chaffing later in the run especially if they don't wick away the moisture quickly enough..
I'm in the US, so I unfortunately don't have any recommendations for shops or anything like that. My wetsuit experience involved going to a local sports store that does rentals and trying on a couple. I'm smaller than your mother - 5'4", size 14 at the time - but they had things that worked for me (and I wasn't the largest available size).
2XU's Men's T:2 worked really well for me. I tried on a couple of others - one from BlueSeventy, and I can't remember the other brand - and they just didn't fit me right. Not too tight or too big, necessarily, just space where there shouldn't be space but perfect in other areas and too long for me overall. Here's my mildly-embarrassing first-ever-wetsuit photo. I was really surprised that a men's wetsuit ended up being appropriate for me and my decidedly non-men's-shaped body, but hell, bodies are weird. :)
Having a salesperson who could walk me through the very intimidating wetsuit process was a huge benefit for me. If trying one on isn't an option, though, and your mother is built at all like me, I'd recommend 2XU's line.
I don't think you're going to find any swim shirts with built in support.
There are some cute surf shirts and triathlon shirts that might be good, and you could pair it with a swim skirt.
Here are a few options I found for tops:
[1] (http://www.amazon.com/Skirt-Sports-Sunless-Summer-Tri/dp/B003V4A8MW/ref=sr_1_14?s=athletic-clothing&ie=UTF8&qid=1393879237&sr=1-14&keywords=swim+shirt) 2 3 4
As a swimmer:
I find a wetsuit to be about 5 to 8 seconds/100 faster.
I find wetsuit shorts Blueseventy Core Shorts to be about 3 seconds faster/100.
It will definitely save you some time in the water. To be honest though, unless you are super serious, the bike and run is where you can make up anything from the water.
I purchased a cheap tri suit online this season. I had a nice hincap one and wrecked and it got all torn up so I was on a budget.
I bought this one of amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RHMFG47/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It has lasted 3 races and will be a 4th this weekend. I don't expect it to last more than 2-3 seasons but it works just fine for me, fits well, has pockets, good padding.
SLS3 Men`s Triathlon FRT 2.0 Tri Shorts - 2 pockets - Trishorts swim, bike and run with comfort (X-Large) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E7R2N74?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
This is what I wore last year and will be wearing this season. I’m in my second season, so not sure i can give a pro quality review, but they got the job done. Pretty comfortable.
Edit: i should add that the manufacturer recommends limited usage in chlorinated water(most pools) as the the chlorine breaks down the fabric/elasticity. I used then once in my practice race in a pool, every time I rode, and then on race day in the bay.
Edit: comp price from last summer was $37, so maybe wait until summer to buy and the price will drop?
They really fit great, but can be hard to get tight enough without either distorting the lens (it's not particularly hard/thick) or compressing it so much it rubs my eyelashes, for launches off the blocks. I recently tried the Speedo Spy 2.0 but it didn't fit. I have a prognathic brow and need something that isn't just a small, firm oval. I want to love the kayenne, but the thin/flexy lenses have me giving it only 4 out of 5 stars. :-/
http://www.amazon.com/Aqua-Sphere-KAYENNE-GOGGLE/dp/B0030DI8NA
i swim with aqua sphere's mask. it gives you a great field of vision and doesn't slip off
http://www.amazon.com/Aqua-Sphere-Seal-Tinted-Metallic/dp/B000ENQSWM/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1262117654&sr=1-7
Get a triathlon suit. They saved my life. I used to get laughed at all the time until I got one. Now, nobody notices. If you're going to be swimming in a pool, get one that is made of chlorine-resistant material.
Get one that's black and unicolor so shadows don't stand out. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/Kona-Mens-Triathlon-Race-Suit/dp/B0727PJ7VG/ref=sr_1_6?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1526904714&sr=1-6&keywords=men+tri+suit
I use this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Virb-HD-Action-Camera/dp/B00EQ2T3KQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Helmet mount is here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Vented-Helmet-Strap-Mount/dp/B00EPKGOMO/ref=pd_bxgy_ph_text_y
and you'll need a micro SD card, I got this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00J2BSW9O?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
It's great, full 1080p, does a decent job at night.
This is precisely what I was thinking of, but with a shorter UCI-legal aerobar like this: https://www.amazon.com/Control-Tech-Impel-Matte-Black/dp/B079LCZ5W4/
I have a Synergy Endorphin wetsuit that I don’t mind at all. I don’t know much at all about wetsuits, but it’s worked fine for me. This was what I got. It’s 180.
The pullcord is stretching when it gets wet. Tie it tight. Warmup for a lap or two and then retie it.
Also, look at buying some cord locks off of amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Cosmos-Shoelace-Replacements-Triathlon-Fastening/dp/B0088LZ7H4/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1380925375&sr=8-15&keywords=cord+lock
Cinch everything down tight, and then just tie your overhand knot. Keeps everything snug and you don't let the cord loosen while you're tying the knot.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZBG71KU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_JZjtzbQ144JTT
TYR 88TCMSXP6AM M Pad Front Zip Trisuit Swimwear, Black/Grey, Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003UNT0GO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_jDrzxbXDWZCHF
I think this is what you are looking for.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H9G7FGR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I'm running into this issue (or expect to be) with triathlons. But plan right now is to wear a compression trisuit, with a sports bra under it for the top half. Bottom half I won't be tucking for the races (biking 50-100 miles on a hard road bike seat, tucked, does not seem like a good idea)
And if you are going to buy one, get this one. Instead of a typical buckle it has magnets so putting it on takes no thought. Not really needed, but oh so nice. Also, MAGNETS!
T1 Pro Magnetic Race Belt with Gel Loops, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A6TXHFU/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_XbECub0GEF15H
I'm a big fan of my Orca 226s. I believe the Pearl Izumi Elites also have (small) pockets on them, but could be mistaken.
