A few points to address your questions.

• Contrast ratio is THE most important component of picture quality (contrast ratio is defined as the brightest the TV gets divided by the darkest blacks). Plasma has typically had higher contrast ratios than similarly price LCD's and are thus lauded for their performance/dollar ratio. They also have better motion handling, but generally speaking, they don't get as bright as LCD's so excessive ambient light can be an issue with plasma.
  
  
• OLED is a technology that allows for 0 blacks. Remember our definition of contrast ratio? 0 is now in the denominator; OLED has effectively an 'infinite' contrast ratio which makes the technology so exciting and the picture quality of OLED so superb. Wait for prices to come down for it and the technology to mature, however.
  
  
• Unless you have a huge screen or sit very close, 4K is probably not worth it at the moment unless the price difference isn't all that much. There's not a ton of 4k content available right now, although it's coming along.
  
  
• To minimize input lag for gaming, use the television's "Game Mode," which turns off all unnecessary video processing that can add lag.
  
  
• A note about calibration: calibration assures you get the same image that the producer of the content intended: ie, the colors you see are the same colors he or she meant for the scene. That is what is meant by a set having accurate colors, how closely it can be calibrated to resemble the director's intent for the program. This is largely a personal preference, whether someone prefers accurate, calibrated colors or not, but once you get used to a calibrated display, all those "vivid" or "dynamic" modes seem entirely too fake and "blue." These modes are used in store to attract attention, but they're not accurate and the colors are blown up and artificial looking. A 'real' calibration is mostly done by a professional calibrator unless you have your own tools, like a colorimeter. You can get close to a calibrated display by changing the set to "movie" or "cinema" mode and using a calibration disk (such as Disney's WOW disk) to tweak the settings further. Additionally, there are many picture settings online for specific TV models and although this might get you closer to a truly calibrated picture, each set is a little different and the same settings aren't guaranteed to get you a perfect result. For most users though, the aforementioned options will be fine. Hiring a good calibrator will run you a few hundred bucks and simply not worth it for the casual home theater enthusiast.

Just wanted to give a big thanks to all the helpful people here who are so willing to share their knowledge, and to u/ZeosPantera for his handy guides.

This was the very first project I wanted to complete in our new house, and considering the delays due to missing/wrong pieces for the furniture, my reluctance to punch holes in the walls in our new place, and so on, it was a bit of a pain to take on. My main goals were to keep it simple, modern, and clean, and I think I managed it well enough.

It's a basic setup, and I know there are some taboo things people will point out (e.g. speakers too close to the corners/walls, non O2-free copper-clad wire, etc), but the important thing is that I'm happy with it. I don't plan on changing much for years to come (unless you guys end up pointing out something that ends up bothering the crap out of me). It looks and sounds great - even the wife loves it, despite her initial skepticism when I first told her my plan (probably the most important thing).

So many thanks to everyone in this subreddit for being awesome, and let me know what you guys think.

• A modified combination of a 3-unit and a 1-unit Ikea Besta TV benches (as opposed to the regular frames which don't have cable management). A bit of an elaboration on this: I say this is modified because out of the box, if you want to mount them to the wall, they rely on drywall anchors (f that s). So I changed out the hanging brackets and drilled some new holes to accommodate the Ikea Akurum Suspension Rails that are normally used for kitchen cabinets -waaaaay more secure when you're actually going into the studs. Add some miscellaneous doors and drawers and you end up with what I built.

HPS is somewhat efficient.. reaching up to 100 lumens/watt, but it's still inefficient compared to LEDs. One good benefit of HPS is that it will generate heat if you need a heating aspect at the same time.

You can probably even cut that in half if you wanted a no name power supply. ~$55 should cover almost everything including a u-channel as a heatsink.

Get something between 3000k-5000k in temperature - this will depend on the crop and whether you're looking for more vegetative growth or more fruiting type growth.

Quick release stands should be fine if you need them. As long as the lighthouses are stable anything works.

I bought the FastCap mounts... and didn't use them. They are overly obtrusive and you are much better served, imo, by installing small corner shelves or just mounting the lighthouse's included stands to the wall. It's really not worth putting up those stands. They are neat but imo not the best way to go.

TV wall mount and a 4k TV (40 inch). One note here... I don't recommend this for a larger 4k tv like what I have here as you are too close to the display when using the keyboard. It's great for people to see whats going on while observing but it's harder to work with when accessing the PC out of VR. Use a smaller display.

I'll post pictures of the room sometime. I like what the OP did with the gym mats. Good look and protection but if you do your chaperone properly it's probably not necessary (but certainly doesn't hurt).

Lastly I have all of the equipment running on Smartthings controlled switches so I can power on the "room" (PC, display, lighthouses, etc etc) on demand. I normally turn off the PC normally and have BIOS set to power on the PC when power is restored (ie the Smartthings switch is turned on). So I can tell my Amazon Echo to "Alexa, turn on the VR Room" and everything powers on and is ready for use when I get there.

Due to the back of the monitor being angle though and not flat I went to Home Depot and bought several plastic spacers to have it stick out off the back I can attached photos after I post to show you. But I has been great wall mount I had it previously already for my Dell 27inch S2716DG 2560/1440 144hz Gsync before upgrading to Ultrawide.

Took screw in to find best fit and bought two and electircal taped them to make sure didnt touch against monitor you will see in pics. Been up for over a year no issues and I do pull and shift at time off wall no issues what so ever.

I would not recommend heavy weight being set onto modern shelves. Search craigslist or facebook marketplace for a nice, strong CRT friendly stand. A nice sturdy desk or table would work also. You may even get lucky and find the official stand. if you search your TV's model number, and dig around, you can even find the model number of the official sony stand for it, and use that to aid your search. Can a cat's claws damage the screen of an LED television? What's the best (& cheapest) substance I can lay over the screen to prevent damage? As some here may recall, my partner and I recently adopted a kitty, but we unfortunately work for much of the day and so are seeking ways to keep him entertained in our absence (when we're around he gets lots of active playtime, walks, snuggles, pets, etc.). To that end, we've purchased and made for him various toys (e.g ones where you slap a ball around a track or chase a sock hanging from a string), scattered puzzle feeders around the apartment (to simulate foraging), ensured access to many comfy spots next to windows, and so on.

Recently, I bought a TV to replace the one in the bedroom, and since they they've fallen in price so much lately (I mean $100 for a 4K 50" panel, really), our old 40" 1080P screen is probably worthless (esp. considering we bought it for $150 5y ago). Conversely, I've noticed the kitty really likes various online 'cat game' videos, e.g. 1, 2. I have some old raspberry pi's & smart outlets etc. lying around, so I was thinking of ripping a bunch of them and having the TV loop through them every so often in our absence (and also set up a live webcam feed obvi). The screen would be positioned horizontally, probably on the floor, so that he can pretend to hunt or w/e.

We keep his claws trimmed, but I'd still expect them to be able to damage the LED TV screen with enough pounces -- is that expectation well founded? If it is, what would be the best substance to layer atop the screen so that he can't scratch it it? Preferably something on the cheaper end -- while a 35" x 20" glass panel would indeed be harder than his claws, it would cost way way more than the tv itself. I also think acrylic / pcb would scratch too easily? There look to be products that might suit my needs but they're also a bit pricey.

Other updates, for those curious -- his incision has mostly healed over, and we took him on his first 'real' hike last weekend, where he 'performed' very well! (minimal tugging, keeping pace consistently)

Yeah! Here's a great example. They often go on sale. Just add that strip to the back of your TV and plug it into the USB (so it's on when the TV is on). I've had it for a year and love it.

It does get black, but not pure black like OLED. The next generation of Quantum TVs will be able to do that. I think Samsung is expecting to have those available next year. It's mostly the brightness where it shines. Allows the TV to have very good HDR and color performance.

It works great, holds a lot of weight and has a good range of motion.

I do not have a second monitor, but if I did I’d probably mount it above if that was possible with a wall mount. I think a desk mount is better for mounting two, unless there’s some way to make a wall mount hold 2. If that wouldn’t work I’d flip it on it’s side next to the ultrawide for reading webpages/text/whatever. I use that at work for software dev and it’s pretty convenient.

I mean honestly it's not that expensive. There are deals on bias lighting on Gizmodo all the time for like 10-15 bucks for a USB strip. Unless you go down the Aquos or more expensive route that color changes to match stuff on screen which you don't really gain any benefit from.

With Ikea even selling cheaper sets now it's not hard at all.

That is a very 'special' monitor. Most monitors have what are called VESA compatibility, the base can be removed and the LCD can be attached to a standard mounting system, look up VESA on google for examples. I have seen some very impressive 4x2 screen systems set up with standard monitors and four position VESA monitor stands. This dell on the other hand does not have anything like that. You could use epoxy to try and attach it to a standard plate, or take the back off and put screws through the plastic, but for a good solution you will need a better monitor.

Don't know why everyone doesn't buy this type exclusively. I've recommended and helped install this to other people as well. It tilts left and right, so you don't even really need to mount it perfect.

Seems kind of interesting, but I see it as more of a gimmick. Bias lighting is a real thing that can ease eye strain, but the point of it is to be a constant source to minimize the extremes between dark scenes and bright scenes. Ideally your screen will be calibrated to near 6500K and you'd have a 6500K light behind it. I got this kit last year for my living room screen, and it works well.

When I used a large TV for a while (Vizio M50/LG B6) I couldn't find a desk mount suitable but what I did find was these Vivo legs. It's pretty much the next best thing IMO.

Don't spend $100 to $200 on any 'brand name' wall mount. The $30 ones on Amazon are just as good in terms of build quality (fabricated metal, mounting spots, etc.) Search on YouTube/ Reddit you'll find lots of resources. You just need to ensure you mount into wall-studs, which is also quite easy once you figure out where they are and how to measure them apart. Did 3 in my house with a few quick YouTube DIY's.

My TV is wall mounted, but there is a TV stand/media center beneath it to house all the electronics, so I have the Bias lighting placed 3/4 of the way up across the back of the TV. I don't care to have lighting beneath the TV, but it still diffuses down quite a bit. I also had to pull the TV out a little bit, otherwise it was too bright for my liking, and it gets better diffusion this way.

Commercial A/V installer here, simple solution! Your TV's Vesa mounting pattern is 400x400. I recommend a single stud wall mount cable of a 400x400 pattern.

There will definitely be a stud between the two windows, use a reliable stud finder to mount this. You can use an articulating mount with a 16" back plate but is more work to mount. Your TV is light and a single stud mount will work perfectly.

I was planning on using the 65mm screws that came with the mount.

The studfinder I am using, also in the picture, does have the AC voltage detection. But, like you said, I don't know how accurate this is so I will be sure to very cautious.

As far as the wall material, I'm not sure what it's made of. I'm going to try to find out.

It was pretty easy to install - Kinda wish it was one of those cool hydraulic arms, but a good one of those is quite expensive.

Any strong VESA mounting arm that only actuates in one two dimensions (one that doesn't move up and down) and has a capacity over 50 lbs.

You bet. The good news is that TVs are getting so light these days that the mounts are getting smaller and smaller.

I ended up getting the TV! I also have been using this wall mount for a few years now, it'd done well by me. It's also held a '08 50" plasma which was heavy as fuck and didn't have any issues.

Alright, so I would get these TV legs to raise the TV a bit and bring it closer to you. (Bonus effect, making it seem like you have a larger TV.) If the VESA mount points on your TV are wide enough you could place the center in the middle; if not, you could have little riser blocks and go over the feet of the stand. I think that would net you a good 6" to 8" of clearance.

As for speakers, the DT CS9060 is pretty solid, but I haven't heard the Mythos or S series. I can wholeheartedly recommend GoldenEar's SuperCenter + Aon 2's, though that unfortunately leaves no budget for rears.

Whatever you choose though is 100% better than a sound bar, and I'll take the Polk or Def Tech build over the Sonos build any day of the week.

Edit: Also keep in mind that you really want the center channel at the edge of your furniture to eliminate reflections. That further backs up my idea of bring the TV forward and up to give you more space for a larger center.

Your next purchase should be some Bias Lighting. It will look pretty and your eyes will love you.

You can use a mount like this, which doesn't require the studs to be perfectly centered behind the tv. You can slide the tv along the mount to get it positioned where you want.

That said, if there's another option I'd recommend it. TVs mounted that high are really uncomfortable to watch.

So I got it working. Instead of the cord I posted below I plugged in a seperate adapter meant for composite audio and video (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-BN39-01154W-Cable-CBF-Signal/dp/B005DNSCNG/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_y). Now it is working all good to go. Really weird though. Thanks for all the help

Well the problem right now is that most tvs people will recommend are going to be hard to find because they have since mostly discontinued last model year and are trying to sell out of them before this model year comes out which is usually between March and June. So as far as getting a good deal, now is the time just ready yourself for potential disappointment if you cant find the one you are looking for.

Getting to my recommendation. With the windows there and if there are no windows behind you, go for a nice plasma and mount it on that wall with an articulating wall mount. Just be sure that the mounting pattern on the back of the tv is at most 400mm x 400mm.

Your TV makes me nervous! You might try something like this I put my mom’s TV on one. It works great, and when you can’t mount the think on a wall due to rental (or whatever) it works.

I had a similar headache with my center channel when I setup my surround sound. Looks like my center channel was slightly smaller though.

I know it can be done. Whether or not it should be done depends on your preference and comfort level. Worth trying for sure. This is also a potential solution.

It's just lights, man. It's not something you "do to the TV". Lights are merely placed behind a TV/monitor, usually attached to back of the monitor itself to reflect on the surface behind it. The purpose is to increase the ambient light around the screen without shining more light on the screen itself or directly in your eyes. Some plug into the TV/monitor and get their power that way. Some have a battery pack. You could get lights designed and marketed for it or DIY pretty easily with LED christmas lights and some tape, or anything really.

What is that component adapter you are using? Looks like this but without the audio jack inputs. Nice work tho, I plan on doing something similar soon, but have all 5 rca plugs go out to not need the A/V cable.

This is correct. All of the mounts will instruct you to drill into the studs and will have a weight rating. I have had a 32" wall-mounted with this for over six months now and it has worked perfectly.

Maybe try Amazon? There's a lot of various kits, but primarily what you're looking for are either M4 standoffs (you might want to measure how deep you need, basically measure from the screw hole to the top of the plastic tab in the VESA mount space) or longer M4 screws with spacers. Unfortunately, most of these kits either cover every possible TV/monitor setup (including many non-standard ones) or else they're good for setting up 25-250 displays (eg - 100pcs or 1000pcs). Even the ones that are good for 25 displays are only ~$20, but it's massive overkill.

I got mine for $29 at amazon and it's a full motion swivel articulating arm. It can hold my 46" TV 20" from the wall. AND it came with an HDMI cable and a 6" bubble-level. That bubble level has been very, very useful.

If the TV is vesa mountable, I would get a universal tv stand that would better fit the mantle. If you are worried about your kids yanking it, also get some anchor straps. Much less work than building a frame and using a wall mount imo, especially for a rental place. Having it on a stand even with anchors would allow you to slide it sideways to access switches behind. They even make stands that swivel, though I'm not sure how much clearance you will get in that spot.

I'm not sure you should do anything to the wall. It would distract from the entertainment on the TV. What I think would look cool is adding bias lighting behind the screen, which you could match the colors of your furniture/rug/whatever.

If your issue is that the TV your looking at uses 2 wider feet, you can look at universal stands that have a middle base to fit onto smaller TV stands.

You can basically buy almost any kit that fits that standard and it should fit ok. If you look up tv brackets, what you're looking for are the two vertical brackets that screw to the back of the tv then hook on to what you have on the wall there. A whole kit costs as little as $15 so you'd probably be better off just buying an entire kit, because just buying the missing parts could end up being as expensive as a whole kit. Or just ask the landlord if you can get the bars because they're probably not using them if their bracket is in the rental.

It's not very likely that your closet molding will hold the weight of a TV plus whatever you're planning on mounting the TV on.

What I would do is get 2 of these [exercise bars] (http://www.amazon.com/Sunny-Health-Fitness-Door-Chin/dp/B0016BNDXI) (or similar) and make a mount for your TV to hang on both of them. Depending on how deep your door frame is you can even tilt it down a few degrees. The concept is based on this sort of mount.

The bars are going to be placed across the door frame, one higher than the other to allow for the TV mount to be hang on them.

If you're experienced enough to build your own mount for the TV, go for it (it can be a bit tricky especially if you want to tilt, rotate and reposition the TV), or you can get something cheap like the link above and use only the part for the TV and store the part that is bolted to the wall for when you can drill holes to the wall.

You can also use this sort of mount to mount it on the exercise bars.

maybe not ~exactly~ what you're after- but I settled on this when i was searching for a similar solution for my setup. This way allowed me more latitude in my shelving choice.

I have my 50" TV mounted to a single stud with two lags. It's an arm mount and the TV is only about 40 pounds though.

OP, why not get a piece of nice plywood to attach to your mount, then use the lags to put into the top of the mount. This is going to be hard to explain, but if you mount the bottom mounting holes to the plywood(use nuts and bolts with the bolt head on the backside flush with the plywood), and the top lags through the plywood and the studs. Then you only make two holes in the wall and the mount is secure. The bottom may try to pull away from the wall when you adjust the TV though.

The bottom has it's force going into the wall and down, while the top has the force going away from the wall and down.

Get a single stud mount. I have had this one for almost two years now. You may need a set of these as well.

Don't know about Hue light strips. I'm using a cheap bias light. Its fairly flexible but I didn't try bending it at the corners. Mine goes straight across the back. I just trimmed it to length. One day I'll replace it with a Hue strip when it goes on a decent sale.

There are absolutely no triple 30" monitor stands or mounts out there. I could only find a 27"x3 stand.

In the end I used for single screen tv mounts. Gives greater flexibility. Hard to apply on a drywall(Gyprock), but i was lucky i have a pure cement wall.

A Plexiglas enclosure may be a little elaborate and cost upwards of $100 in parts alone. I would just make a cover for the TV with a good quality tarp and put it over the TV when not in use.

You'd be surprised how cheap these things can be nowadays

I have the same model TV and this mount worked great for it. Able to pull it out, swivel, tilt, with no problem.

EVGA are generally well regarded for Nvidia. I couldn't tell you about 1440p monitors (I'm a 16:10 man myself) but look for one with VESA mounting, compatible wall mounts are fairly cheap.

I see the Lumidoodle color strip includes the dimmer control, and I know my white Lumidoodle remembers its settings when powered off/on so I assume the color one would too. I think if you just set it to white you should be good.

No. There are more expensive bias lighting that plugs into your TV to accomplish that. For these you are better setting it on white. White and 6500k is technically what it should be.


You can manually change the color to match what is on the TV though.

Can you mount it to the wall? From a functional perspective I think where the racquet is on one of these arm brackets. You could keep the stand underneath of it as a media console
