Well right now I'm running a bit bare (actually on a smoking hiatus until I cement this job I'm hankering after) but right now I have a draft guard under my door (here's an example).
Otherwise for the longest time at my old place I also used (and plan on reinstalling before the winter) some weather stripping around the door too (like this) that is just great at keeping cold air out and skunky smoke in.

A really cheap and honestly practical solution, and it'll help keep bugs and cold air out of your home. Win-win.

u/SheSaidSam · 1 pointr/homeowners

I have some large gaps under the door to some of my bedrooms. And I was thinking about using a door sweep such as this

M-D Building Products 67967 35-3/4-Inch Kerf Style Replacement Door Bottom with Vinyl Fins, Brown https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I1CCOS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_al2LDbYC8E30X

To cut down on noise infiltration, I did those in my theater room and made a big difference, but then a friend mentioned the gaps are necessary for return air...? Am I gonna a burn out my furnace or air conditioner prematurely if I use those?

What about something like this that I just use temporarily when I have guests over that like to wake up early?

Thanks!

Grab a towel, lay it on the floor in the doorway. Close the door on it. Make sure the towel is folded over enough that there's a tight fit.

Most of the sound comes from the gap underneath for most interior doors. This is doubly true for houses with non-carpet floors, they usually have at least a 3/8" open gap under the door.

The towel is basically a makeshift draftstopper. You can buy a product that looks nicer if you want. Like:

A lighter works as a nice easy and reliable draft test. Just run around the frame and watch for the flame to dance. A draft guard is a nice cheap and easy thing to add after you've addressed any weather stripping that needs to be replaced.

u/ready_1_take_1 · 2 pointsr/StonerProTips

Two more door pro-tips:

Use foam tape like this to seal the gap between the door and doorframe.

This, combined with a draft sock will keep the dank vapors on the correct side of the door.

Bonus benefit: helps keep weird odors & noises out of your space.

u/shadilay · 3 pointsr/BabyBumps

I'm not sure about the space heater but it might help to get some of that plastic sheeting that goes over windows to winterize them. I've heard it helps a lot but I never get off my ass to put it up. Most are clear so you can still get sun while keeping the heat in!

Also, for under the door (if the crack is large enough to leak heat), get something like this. We used one of these on our unfinished upstairs to keep both the heat and the cold out from the usable portion of the house and it works great.

Your ideas are sound.

The shrink wrap window seal kits are effective at stopping drafts:

A door sock can stop the wind pretty effectively:

New weatherstripping and life will be good.

I have this applied in one of the windows of the master bedroom. Solved the problem. Ugly but effective.

I JUST ordered the duck brand one. It should be here in a couple of days. I am going to try it on one of the doors and then buy one for another.

>New weatherstripping and life will be good.

The issue is it's TOO cold right now to do anything major so a stop gap solution is the only option I guess. One more thing is I am a noob when it comes to weatherstripping . I have always lived in a much much hotter climate and it's my first midwestern winter and I am a single guy living in this place with my girlfriend over sometimes and doing everything alone kind of sucks.

u/SoCalMama · 1 pointr/internetparents

Your sister must provide appropriate heating to you as a tenant. Look up your tenant rights in your state and confront her about it. The least she can do is provide an electric space heater for you.

Other than that, you can get a draft guard for under any doors with poor weather stripping. You can also wear warmer clothes at home (sweatpants, warm socks, hoodies, etc.) and add a thick comforter to your bed.

Ensuring all doors and windows are sealed, and hanging winter/thick curtains over windows should help keep things warmer.

u/starryskies811 · 1 pointr/ferrets

Omgosh, mine quit the sofa destruction when I stapled 2 layers of sheets under it. Haha. For crawling under doors... something like this. It worked like a charm:

Do you mean something like the Twin Draft Guard (as seen on TV!)?

EDIT: I don't have any experience with it myself, please don't take this message as a recommendation -- just thought I could help with the link!

u/kivalo · 1 pointr/DIY

I don't know if this would fit better than the twin draft guard https://www.amazon.com/Evelots-Magnetic-Stopper-Energy-Saving/dp/B00CE8VC44

How much time, money, and energy are you willing to put into this? you could take the door off the hinges (most hinges have a pin that can be removed so nothing has to be unscrewed), and attach by glue or epoxy, another piece of wood to the bottom to help fill that gap.

u/kent1146 · 2 pointsr/vaporents

Gey one of these. Under-door draft blocker. It is the adult version of "shove a towel under the door."

Suptikes Door Draft Stopper Under Door Seal for Exterior/Interior Doors, Door Sweep Strip Under Door Draft Blocker, Soundproof Door Bottom Weather Stripping, 2" W x 39" L, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072QDSJKT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_9IcsDbP40HHHA

Use it in addition to what people have already said (windows, fan, smoke buddy / spoof, etc). But this is THE KEY. Every other method relies on covering or re-directing the smell before it leaks out of the room (under the door crack). This prevents the leaking from ever happening.

u/FirstAid84 · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Doors - solid core doors block sound the best. If you can change the door, that should be your first step.
If you can't modify the existing door, look for an under door draft blocker:
MAXTID Bottom Door Draft Stopper 32 to 38 inches Grey Adjustable Insulation Sound Proof Door Draft Blocker for Noise Light Smell Stopper https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KK866KK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_iEFZDbDY2JAQP
Also, it helps to use sound-dampening curtains.
Sometimes they're also called "sound proof", "insulated" or "blackout".
Although I haven't tried it, I've heard that the heavy blankets you'd find in a truck for moving furniture (Google "fiberglass blanket") is even better. I have a home office where I've installed the sound blocking curtains to cover the door (just have to take it off the hooks above the door when not working).

u/27thFrequency · 2 pointsr/badroommates

I have that happen too on occassion when my roommate needs to study or games late at night. So I got one of these draft guards for the door. Stops the light from getting in like a charm. You also don't have to remove them since they slide over the floor quite well.

u/spooky_spaghetties · 2 pointsr/whatsthisbug

I recommend that they either install weatherstripping or use something like a draft guard (example here). If possible, you might consider getting something similar for the door to your individual unit.

u/just_some_Fred · 1 pointr/RedditForGrownups

I'd recommend something like this. Also, if smoke's getting out enough to fug up the whole place, they probably get a pretty bad draft in winter/ leak cool in the summer anyway.

And don't buy it for them, just suggest it to them. They need to be grownups too.

u/ScubaSam3265 · 3 pointsr/Pets

Cold weather door stopper might work. Something like this

You can also cut a pool noodle to do the same thing :)

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Frugal

If you go to any hardware store and ask for "3M Window film" I'm sure they'll know what you are taking about.

You can find much more exciting ones but http://www.amazon.com/Thermwell-DS2-3-Feet-Draft-Cloth/dp/B000RUMZHE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1376337968&sr=8-2&keywords=door+snake for instance.

u/rareekan · 7 pointsr/astoria

I’d like to add on that the bottom of your front door could also be a source of heat loss. In a previous apartment, my door had a full inch gap from the floor. This thing made a huge difference: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0125A7HJY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LXbZDbP5PBC7K

u/csmith2019 · 3 pointsr/ferrets

Maybe something like this?

install one of these on your front door. It's what I use to keep the smell in. I am disabled and have no choice but to smoke at home, and pot is the only effective non-opioid treatment for my pain. Please consider the possibility that your neighbor is in a similar situation, even if not visibly disabled.

u/tornadoRadar · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I screw those in with a backer piece that is stronger. this prevents the issues you're having.

This is my go to:
https://www.amazon.com/Chang-Lian-65346306-Stopper-Soundproof/dp/B072QDSJKT/

and then use a piece of aluminum channel to pinch the mounting surface to the door with screws. you can find this at depot/ace/etc.

u/lickin_the_toilet · 3 pointsr/trees

Try a draft blocker, I used that in my condo building in the city, and I smoked heavily both in my condo and on the balcony. You could also try smoking in the bathroom for a while, using the exhaust fan that's there.

Hang a heavy blanket over the door, put a rolled towel at the bottom of the door or one of those draft dodgers https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003ZSWER6/ref=mp_s_a_1_4

u/ruhhhlax · 4 pointsr/nosleep

First things first, why is there a 1 inch gap between the floor and the door?

Secondly you need to buy one of these ASAP http://www.amazon.com/Twin-Draft-Guard-Extreme-Door/dp/B003ZSWER6

u/Bacon_and_Eggs1 · 5 pointsr/fixit

Cheap fix: put a line of tape that sticks from the bottom of the door to the floor. You’ll put another piece of tape on the opposite side of the original piece so there is no stick to the tape.

Money fix: they sell pads that insulate VISEMAN 36 Inch Under Door Draft Stopper-Twin Door Draft Blocker Guard, Double Sided,Machine-Washable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PQGZG3T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VC4sDbEQ7YWN3

You can always use one of these or similar... at least until they eat through it, if your ferrets are as destructive about foamy things as mine were.

>"I'm exhausting the hot air from the portable unit into the ducts that go back into the central air system because I have no other option due to my casement window."
This is your biggest problem. Get some plexiglas with a hole cut to fit your vent hose. For the door get a draft gaurd to close the gap.
