Do some research on light penetration. As you get deeper, you will lose more and more colors. To get accurate colors you will need to bring your own light source.

IMO, lights are glass are the most important purchases. In 5 or so years you will be shopping for a new camera, but (hopefully) your lights and lenses are still working well for you. Imagine yourself as a very successful underwater photographer. You can buy just about anything you want. Think about what kind of pictures you are taking. Now, what type of gear do you need to take those pictures? Do you need a lot of different lenses? How elaborate is your lighting and arms?

Now take a step back. what could you buy (within reason) that would meet your needs then as well as now? What things are simply too expensive to justify buying at your skill and interest level?

I did this and I imagined me with a top notch SLR, lots of fancy lenses, and some really good lights. After shopping around I found some strobes that were not (too) expensive and I would still be comfortable using them if I bought a UW case for my SLR. I also found a good focus light that works well for me and I could use in the future. The camera I bought was a entry level Olympus for around $500 for the camera and case.

For you, this plus a base plus a focus light would be a good start. Not sure where you dive, but researching wet diopter lenses to put on the front of the UW would be helpful for macro. Once you are comfortable with that, add a strobe. It will take a while to get good with your new setup. Next you can decide if you want a 2nd flash. As for flashes, I would recommend a Sea & Sea YS-D2 or something similar, but that would depend on your long term goals. As far as arms go, I only know what I own and I have not heard anything bad about any of the brands out there. I would recommend something that you can buy locally.

Hopefully this helps.

/u/Zhork - sorry to hear about your 7D Mark II. I'll try to answer your questions one at a time.

> I would love to jump to a full frame camera and does at least 1080 @120fps, but may consider other more affordable options. I was looking at the Sony line and seriously considering the A7rii and the s models, yet the s did not have the photo capabilties of the Rii.

For the best balance between stills, video and affordability, I recommend a [$1348 cropped sensor Sony A6500 (with a free 64 GB Sony SD card and a couple of extra batteries)] (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera-Accessory/dp/B01M5GWLRZ//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) plus a [$395 Metabones fifth generation smart adapter] (https://www.amazon.com/Metabones-Canon-Mount-Smart-Adapter/dp/B071W6BKDQ//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) for your Canon glass.

> does having a full frame vs a cropped one matter while shooting video?

Not really. The last time you went to the movie theater or watched series television, you probably saw a motion picture shot on a camera with a Super 35mm sensor or film frame - about the same size as the APS-C sensor in your 7D MkII.

Like your 7D MkII, the A6500 has an APS-C sensor, and takes high quality 24.2 MP stills (seen [here] (https://www.flickr.com/groups/3081335@N25/pool)).

It's a very capable, internally stabilized 4K video camera as well.

Here are a few examples of the image quality it can produce:

  • What's your budget range?

  • What camera(s) are you using now?

  • Are you talking scuba diving, skin diving (snorkel gear/free diving), or just dipping your camera rig into water (wading from the shore)?

An underwater housing is going to cost as much- if not more than your camera. A friend used one of these kinds of waterproof bags but I wouldn't trust that to go more than a foot deep for more than a few seconds, max.

A few years ago I picked up a Canon ELPH100 HS because it had a good low light response compared to a few similar point & shoots. The video straight out of the camera is really nice, sharp, and vivid, and I'm really happy with the images it produces. I got the matching Canon housing for around $200 I think, but it goes into a limited ("use friendly") underwater/snow mode that's simple, but it's essentially "Underwater Auto mode." An Ikelite housing is a little more expensive but it gives you access to all buttons on the camera and you can get a little more control. If you want the most control, check out CHDK - it's a more robust (less pretty) operating system that you load onto an SD card that gives you full manual control of your camera.

Otherwise a housing for a DSLR/mirrorless cameras is gong to run in the thousand(s) dollar range.

After around 10-15 feet deep, you lose all red light from the sun. The rest of the spectrum filters off quickly as well after that. When you combine distance between your camera and your subject to your depth, you're really working with a vastly limited color and light profile.

A strobe reintroduces the full color spectrum back into your shot but the range is very limited, even with a powerful system. Strobes are also expensive, and if they're to close to the camera, they'll illuminate any fine particles in the water and cause backscattering. Mitigate backscatter by placing your strobe(s) on long arms (also expensive) so you're shooting your flash at a more dramatic angle.

A lot of underwater photos are essentially monochromatic images of light and shadow, so practice shooting in B&W on land. Some folks use red filters, but I prefer to just correct white balance in post. Shooting Raw is more forgiving.

Wide angle lenses are pretty common. Anything with a wide aperture is ideal. Water magnifies everything by around 25-33%, so a 50 mm f/1.8 on a crop sensor will be a really tight view. Something like an 11-16 f/2.8 is better, or a nice wide prime could be closer to ideal. Autofocus might be really important, but I haven't really used a big u/w DSLR rig much.

Hero 7 black is the way to go. The hypersmooth stabilization makes it worth it.

Accessories to get:

First of all, get a gopro plus trial. It gives you 50% off of batteries and other accessories, but not chargers or microsd cards.

Grab a few extra batteries. With the trial, they're $10 each.

The dual bay charger is well worth the price.

These are the microsd cards I use in my H7B. They're fast, reliable and cheap. Also on gopro's recommended list of cards to use.

I use tempered glass protectors for the lens and rear screen and they don't affect video quality at all. They went on very easily and the lens cap is a nice bonus.

For a case, I currently use this one, but the official case looks good too.

I use this frame mount and love it. The front round piece can be removed if desired; I took it off as I don't need it for what I use my gopro for. It includes mounting options for both standard threaded mounts and gopro mounts. And the back slides on and off.

If you need a head mount, the amazonbasics one is identical to the official gopro branded mount aside from the logo (I have both).

Completely optional, but I really like these aluminum knobs over the standard plastic ones.

That about covers everything I use. Hope this helps some!

u/LukeOnTheBrightSide · 1 pointr/photography

Sorry about the 6D! Hopefully the button that doesn't work isn't too important. I lost my directional buttons for down, up, or right. Only the "left" button works.

Luckily, nearly all the menus can be navigated by dials. Still a pain in the butt when trying to review images.

I was snorkeling with mine in essentially a heavy-duty ziploc bag. I had used it before on several occasions without any problems, but this day, I looked in the bag while snorkeling and saw maybe a half-inch of saltwater on the bottom of the bag. Immediately surfaced, turned everything off, let it dry. At first it wouldn't turn back on, but eventually it came alive... just without those buttons.

All in all, I'd consider that pretty lucky. I'd say there's a 75% chance that I didn't properly seal the bag, and a 25% chance it failed.

I'm with you, I'd much prefer a more weather sealed camera. I love taking hikes and landscape shots, so occasional showers are expected. But for 10fps, amazing dynamic range, dual card slots, EVF with good battery life, amazing video quality, in-body image stabilization, and working up/down/right buttons, I'd probably accept throwing a rain cover in my bag.

One of my favorite activities...planning dream vacations!

Ok, first, I'm going to Puerto Rico...beautiful weather, good food, and lots of history. You can't not find something to do.

I'll stay in Old San Juan for a few days to roam around the beautiful buildings, soak up the culture, and visit museums.

Then, I'll head west to El Yunque, the rainforest, and spend a day or two hiking around, photographing wildlife and flora. It'll help to have this bad boy with me.

After I'm done hiking in the rainforest, I'll head over to Isla Vieques for a final night in Puerto Rico. On Vieques, I'll make sure to view the bioluminescent bays... and maybe even try my hand at more photography with one of these.

And of course, the company. I'll go with my best friend, because nothing is quite like spending time travelling with friends. Plus, she's pretty much the most awesome person ever, with a sarcastic sense of humor, lots of energy, and always looking to travel. And she's also into the photography, so she'll be down with me stopping to take photos all the time!

Doesn't get much better than that!

u/TelepathicFerret · 1 pointr/scuba

So looking up the Canon D20 it looks like it is just a base waterproof point-n-shoot in the $200-300 range. If you want better video and want to stay in the same price range then a GoPro 7 would be an option. You do have various other waterproof still point and shoots that you can get waterproof housings to extend their depth ranges that would bring you up to the $500-800 range. Personal I have a Sony RX100v that just the camera alone is $900 though I'm now getting into have some play when it comes to manual settings and can shoot in RAW. You will see a big improvement in quality though to maximize it you need to start bringing your own light whether in strobes for stills and video light for, well, video. Also you will need to look at wet lens for these prosumer level. Just the camera in housing alone won't get you those great whole wreck/reef shots. I'll break down how much my current setup costs with the RX100v, this will be a guide for you since you can always get different products or used to get some of your cost down...or up.

u/SoFloSpearo · 5 pointsr/itookapicture

Thanks!

This is the exact set up I use. CamDive is also manufactured as Meikon so you may want to google both names and see if either one is a bit cheaper than the other. Right now the camdive is at a pretty good price. You should know that this housing will only fit the kit lens, or a prime lens that is the same length of shorter. If you want a high end aluminum housing, check out Nauticam.

Congrats on your new camera, I'm sure that you'll love it!

u/Streetiebird · 3 pointsr/Beginning_Photography

If you're looking for something which can go underwater, then you'll either need a fairly expensive and bulky underwater housing, or one of the few models which can go underwater on their own.

I would recommend either, the Nikon 1 AW1, which can go underwater without a housing. Though only two lenses are capable of going underwater.

Or the Sony A6000 and an underwater housing for it.

The Nikon mirrorless system doesn't have as big of a sensor as its peers, but they're very small and light.

The Sony mirrorless cameras are pretty awesome, have a normal-sized sensor, and are lightweight compared to a full DSLR with a mirror. If I was going to buy a new system I would either get the A6000 or the more expensive A6300.

Hope this helps!

Also, if it's a GoPro that uses a waterproof housing make sure you get a floaty backdoor, and if it's a hero session pick up one of these.

Hello! :-)

I don't own Go Pro, but my father does. He asked me to buy a new housing (Including the black gripper below) as the plastic broke on his original housing. He doesn't do any dive-water diving, but does use it to film some fishes once in a while (up to 10M I will guess).
I'm guessing I shouldn't be going for a 3rd party housing, as I don't trust them to be 100% waterproof? (he has Hero 4). Better to pay a more expensive price and be safe about water in your go pro? Is this is what I need to order basically? :

https://www.amazon.co.uk/GoPro-AHSRH-401-Standard-Housing/dp/B00O12F058/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491986659&sr=8-1&keywords=go+pro+standard

This also including the gripper (based on the pictures it does, but I'm just making sure). Also - I guess all are one size as it just says "Standard" and not specifically to HERO 4?

u/baaldlam · 1 pointr/gopro

Thanks for the reply buddy!

I was thinking about strapping the camera to my head instead of holding it during the dive. Would you advise against that or is it a fair alternative to getting a rig?

Batteries and SD cards are a must for sure, I might go for the GoPro plus, sounds reasonable.

As for the supersuit, this seems to be the exact one GoPro sells.. is it original? Or should I just not take any chances and order from the website? This trip is already costing me a buttload and I intend to simply buy a GoPro off Kijiji (canadian craigslist) and re sell it once the trip is over.

No comments yet? In Oct of 2018 I upgraded from a GoPro Hero 3+ to a micro 4/3 mirrorless system. I used the old GoPro rig for like 50-70 dives.

Here's a pics of my rig. I'd like to think mine is the upper range of cheap. The camera I bought for diving but also rock climbing and backpacking so it couldn't be heavy and I wanted weather sealing. I bought it when Olympus was having a camera/kit lens/dive housing combo for $1400 and sold the housing for half the combo cost because I couldn't afford third party ports for the lens I wanted.

Unfortunately I just (on Friday) got back from a dive trip in Maui where one of my dive lights crapped out and a day later the other fell off the locline sometime during kick out. So now I really have an excuse to upgrade to strobes. My photos have slowly gotten better; here's my photo album, I suggest starting from the bottom because they're in chronological order.

u/InAGreenSuit · 6 pointsr/gopro

It's not to make it look less like a GoPro, it's to make the GoPro less noticeable in the first place.

It's like someone wearing white Apple earbuds vs. normal black earphones. Just because they're black doesn't mean they look different to any other earphones, they're just less immediately obvious. I for one think it's a very useful idea for those people who aren't part of the 'look at my GoPro!' crowd.

While we're here, if this sticker has piqued your interest and you have a bit of extra cash to throw around, why not go the whole hog and get GoPro's Blackout housing.

Edit: Don't know why I put up such a dodgy website. Here's the Amazon version, much more trustworthy.

is an underwater lens better than this option?

u/lepetitcoer · 1 pointr/Beginning_Photography

I am going to see Niagara Falls next month, so I also wanted to waterproof my camera. This is what I came up with. It just came yesterday, so I haven't had a chance to do anything besides open the box. The reviews are ok.

There are also really expensive housings that fit over the camera. They probably work the best, but I don't have the cash for that!

There are things like ponchos for your camera at the cheap end, but I'm not sure how well they work.

I will be following this post to see if there are any better suggestions!

u/sidsy · 2 pointsr/BurningMan

Hey! We will have a solar charging station for camera batteries, camera protection and cleaning supplies and a place (out of the dust) where people can change lenses.

So here's a list of DON'T DOs:

  1. Change lens on playa unless you are in a dust-free zone.
(Change indoors, with fresh latex/serving gloves)

  2. Shoot without a protective sleeve.

  3. Walk around without spare batteries.

That said, here's the one I am personally using:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00169HXW2/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

Shooting with a smart phone isn't that bad either, as a second-perspective lens, if you feel you chose the "wrong lens".

    Cheers!

Edit: Thanks so much and please spread the word!

I’m going diving for the first time in Hawaii this April. I have a Sony a6500 and am considering this waterproof housing. It can only accommodate a few lenses. the two I am considering are the 35mm 1.8 (aps-c lens) and the 35mm 2.8 (full frame) lens. I’m not sure if the wider aperture will be needed or if i should go with the 2.8 lens for the better sharpness and to build my collection of full frame for the day I (eventually) upgrade. We expect to only go to a depth of about 60ft

Any insight would really help. Thank you!

u/thatguyron · 4 pointsr/photography

I have an a6000 that I've used backpacking in Iceland and the Grand Canyon, and I like it for extended hikes like that. Check out my instagram (@summitviews) to see some of the results (about 2/3 of the photos there are from the a6000). But keep in mind that I don't use the kit lens.

For Iceland, I also brought an underwater housing for it, but I only ended up using it a few times because I guess we were lucky with the weather.

I think our of your options I’d suggest bringing your Sony underwater with a SeaFrogs housing and then insuring it through DAN’s equipment policy (protects against flooded cameras). It’s decent (not great, but vacuumable and has visible back o-ring. Also had a lot of good reviews on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Sea-frogs-Underwater-Waterproof-housing/dp/B0759SVFBD.

Here’s a video of me using the TG5: https://vimeo.com/288909211

Here’s one with my GH5: https://vimeo.com/351291185

I have tons more on my Vimeo (Vimeo.com/jakemmc).

I don’t hate using the GoPro but I would hate using it was my main camera. Great as a b-cam that’s constantly rolling underwater or if my main camera has issues. GoPro pictures are garbage so if you ever wanted to have that as an option get the TG or bring your A6300 underwater. The other thing is that I’ll say light is the most important thing to your video. With low light the GoPro (and really the TG) struggle. Hard to light ambiently but if you’re close to a subject I highly recommend video lights. In the tropics it’s never really needed (unless at depth) but I dive mostly cold water where it’s necessary.

For kayaking, you don't need the same level of waterproofing that you need for, say, snorkeling.

I use the Dicapac case on my Kayak, I unscrew the front when I'm photographing in calm water.

Amazon sells skeleton housing for the purposes of using the ports.

> there really isn't a way to get external audio

That's not true. Buy the skeleton housing, USB microphone adapter, and any microphone (wired or wireless) that outputs to a 3.5mm plug (I use this one) and you're good to go. Much better sound quality than the crappy built in mic.

Bought one for my trip to Crete. I did everything they suggest to leak testing and proper loading and sealing. Although I did an extra step of letting it sit in the bathtub overnight empty to guarantee that it was watertight. I took it snorkeling, when I finished it was bone dry inside. I bought the larger one for DSLRs and I would recommend it. It is a much cheaper alternative to the next in line for waterproof housings.

It was this one. http://www.amazon.com/DiCAPac-WPS10-Waterproof-Cameras-190mm/dp/B00169HXW2/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1314271019&sr=1-3

Why buy the knock off when you can buy the legit one for cheaper?

I just bought one myself, I'd suggest to get one quickly before the price raises back up. It's currently $28.49 w/ Prime as I type this.

I got [THESE](https://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Travel-Packing-Cubes-Set/dp/B01MD1P3V4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1493584072&sr=8-3
) and used the one slated for shoes.

I packed around it with smaller clothing for safety while in the air, and for most of the trip I had my DSLR out, I used one of THESE around my camera while it was out.

I have a Nikon D7000 for a camera, and I use THIS as my travel lens with a UV filter, but no hood for this trip because it was in the waterproof case.
