Notions?

I try to be picky about which specialty rulers I add to my collection because they're often expensive and i don't want a billion of them... but i do have a small wish list of a few. I want the Jaybird Quilts Hex N More & Sidekick rulers. Angela Walters set of quilting rulers. Creative Grids Pineapple ruler. Creative Grids Folded Corner Clipper Tool [I just saw this video today and have decided I NEED this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKQ9VS8e0lI&t=2s)

There's this gadget that is super cute and way overpriced [Roll & Press](https://www.amazon.ca/Clover-7812-Roll-Press-Light/dp/B01M7XAHFM/ref=pd_rhf_se_p_img_12?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=53S1QXXDF1KZPN96EEYN) that you can get for $3 in a not as cute [wallpaper seam roller](https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000I1THI2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I use this way more than i expected, and dont need to go to my iron nearly as much now.

This [seam guide](https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07JQMNXDZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) has seriously stepped up my piecing accuracy game since i got it.

Hi op, professional here.

We actually have a guide on a sidebar however it is outdated and a new one is in the works.

Will you be having tiled showers or underfloor heating?

To remove the vinyl, usually we just slice it up with a sharp craft knife and peel back in pieces. An excellent tool is this floor scraper - we carry a minimum of 2 in the toolbox. They also fit standard snap off blades making it easier and cheaper than buying their proprietary products. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FK76AM/

Regardless, the normal scope would be to peel back the linoleum, check quality of the ply and ensure it has appropriate joist spacings and deflection (handy calculator here -https://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/deflecto.pl) use a scraper or mechanical grinder and shop vac to sand the floor, mix and apply thinset (never use pre mix adhesive, even if it has thinset in the name it is a marketing tactic only!) to floor or cbu sheets (sheets best), screw off or nail according to specifications from manufacturer, mesh tape and thinset joints and then away you go.

For tile, my preference is porcelain 24x24" or larger.

1/16 spacings.

You may need leveller.

For wet areas, my personal preference for waterproofing is wedi, it is also code in my country to waterproof floors in bathrooms if it's not a concrete subfloor. A foam insulation product can serve this purpose, and replace cement board underlay.

Laticrete systems, mapei or schluter (ditra) are also excellent alternatives.

If you're heating the floor, I strongly recommend using a foam insulation board under the heating elements as a replacement to cbu, this boosts efficiency by some incredible numbers.

After laying elements, you'll want to level off the floor to protect the elements and provide a smooth surface to tile over. We tend to use mapei eco plan leveller here, but again most brands and ranges have self levelling components.

You may also need to prime prior to leveller, primer seals the surface and prevents the substrate sucking moisture out of adhesive before it has time to cure. This is especially important on cement board, and important to do prior to leveller compounds on concrete or cement board, or gypsum based plasters. It is not usually required over foam boards.

Always ensure it is synthetic resin based or acrylic. Polyvinyl adhesive (PVA) based primer reemulsifies when wet, and latex based primer often just seals the surface rather than penetrating in. Some primers require watering down prior to application.

Pay close attention to mixing of your tile adhesive, water ratios and allowing the mixture to slake (allows polymers in the adhesive and cements to react, and absorb moisture) before mixing again are both very important steps. We see a lot of failures due to adhesives being too thick or not allowed to slake.

For laying tiles, trowel all lines directionally. Backbutter all tiles with a larger surface area of 900cm2 (30x30cm, ie 12x12")

This video explains it better than I can - https://youtu.be/Way5bMh-eYg

Use an appropriate sized trowel! With anti lippage systems (clips), often anything under 1/2" (12mm) can be problematic as the base of the clip can hold the tile off the surface preventing full collapse of the trowel line.

Grouting is easy.
Mix according to instructions, use a damp sponge to clean off.

Cutting tile is easy, we use dry Grinders with diamond mesh blades and dust collection systems, and tile snappers (montolit and sigma) for straight runs.

Video I made for some reason here - http://imgur.com/gallery/5JELx5i

Quick rundown on the above found in an album over here - http://imgur.com/gallery/SJdTq3S

If in doubt, the John Bridge forums is a fantastic resource for tilers, by tilers.

That can be found here - https://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/

Most of the tilers in this subreddit are regulars over on the forums as well.

Don't trust YouTube or many (if any) blog sites, they all get it wrong and shoot down anyone who calls them out. No comebacks just means they don't want you back, or don't know who did it!

The one exception on YouTube is Sal diblisi, his channel can be found here - https://www.youtube.com/user/saldibs

Hope this helps!

Hey! I actually just did this exact job in my house on the fireplace. Probably about 6-7 layers of paint for me. I did a ton of research and settled on smart strip (amazon link below) - there is also a pretty good YouTube video of someone doing outside brick. I put the paste on very thick and used the waxy paper to cover for 2 full days. When I came back to it with a heavy duty razor scraper, it came off pretty easily. I’d say I still spent 5min per brick on the later part of the process but absolutely love how the project came out.

album of pictures

Smart Strip by Peel Away - 1 Gallon Paint Remover https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001F0KO2S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_5uC-Bb522HRW2

I got one similar but from Lowe’s so I could make sure was heavy duty. ORIENTOOLS Heavy Duty 4-inch Razor Blade Scraper with Long-Handle, Cleaning Glass Wall Scraper, Painting Stripping Tools,Tile Adhesive Removal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075Z4B54H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3BC-Bb10Q4KND

u/BrewCrewKevin · 5 pointsr/Homebrewing

Agreed.

I have all my friends keep New Glarus bottles because they are AWESOME to remove. The adhesive is water soluble and they literally fall off in an iced down cooler (which can be a pain at the beach, but great for me!)

I also recommend a small glass scraper blade like this guy. Even the hardest labels only take a minute to scrape off. Especially when already soaked.

Basically it's like a hockey puck that you hold in your hand, but there's a little caster inside with gears for wheels. The gear teeth are sharpened and only long enough to puncture wallpaper without harming the paper on the plasterboard. You hold the "puck" in your hand and rub it all over the wallpaper. All those little holes make it easier for steam or glue remover to penetrate the paper. It's a must for very thick wallpaper or the really glossy, waxy, plastic-y kind.

Try some filter floss. Pack a bunch into the final stage of your filter(s) it does a great job of cleaning up the very fine floaties.

As for the algae, a razor blade does wonders. Just be careful around the silicone joints. Something like this is easier on the hands than just a blade.

u/craderson · 2 pointsr/myog

Yes. Inside seams. Lay the bag flat and really press it in. It helps if you use a roller. Something like this:

Wadason Seam Roller Wallpaper Roller Flooring Roller Sound Deadening Roller for Wallpaper Quilting Car Sound Deadener Roller Wallpaper Smoother Tool https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RY6N4PP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EFmZDbRBCYRPZ

Edit: this stuff works well and can theoretically waterproof an all-dyneema pack. But it is always a good idea to use a liner or at least a waterproof stuff sack for clothes and quilt.

u/multifuel · 2 pointsr/howto

Perhaps the tool used to puncture small holes in wall paper for removal https://www.amazon.com/Silverline-221199-19-Inch-Wallpaper-Perforator/dp/B00PQ8EEN0. It's like a roller with pins. With the paint compromised the water will soak in and eventually remove the bond from the popcorn to the wall board. I have literally taken a garden hose inside a house to do this as a pump sprayer wasn't enough. That's about all I got! Good luck to you- and if you want to redo with knock down texture watch a few videos. It's really easy and doesn't require much in equipment. I found sometimes the popcorn was covering up very poor drywall seams and such and knock down is much nicer imo.

Edit- added link to tool

u/Claycorp · 2 pointsr/StainedGlass

Don't use a sharp pointed object, E6000 is more elasticish and will likely pull off fine. Otherwise get a flat razor scraper. If you don't have one already they are the best thing for removing anything sticky & icky off flat glass. Stickers are no match for one of these things. Follow it up with some denatured/high % rubbing alcohol to remove any of the residues leftover and should be good as the day you made it.

If you glue patterns on they are also super handy for peeling up dried pattern parts.

u/crowfort · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I just had to take a wallpaper border down the other day, I would say buy a wallpaper scoring tool.

Zinsser 02966 1 Head Papertiger Wallcovering Scoring Tool https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QUBZ54Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZivDCbX7MD7V0

Use that in conjunction with the spray and wait. It’s never easy and just takes time. I’ve used two different sprays, one gel and one liquid and the gel stays up longer and felt like it worked better. Good luck.

u/artlovepeace42 · 1 pointr/DIY

Use a scraper like this to get the silicone off. http://www.amazon.com/Zinsser-98023-Glass-Scraper-Blades/dp/B00275EFUC
If you still have a little bit left in the nooks and crannies I wouldn't worry. Just get a good bead of new silicone and it should do the trick. You might want to look up some videos on youtube on how to install a sink. A couple minutes of videos could really help you out.

u/ReactivePortal · 1 pointr/DIY

I agree with this. Perf the paper, then steam. Some of the older paper is quite thick and needs perforation before steaming, don't go too deep tho!~

Perforator

You can kind of do the same thing with a sharp blade, but be very careful not to score too deep, if anything a scratch will do.

One more tip... spray the wallpaper after scoring with a light mist of water, then apply your steam. Move your steamer nice and slow. Tie Chi, not karate.

u/CursedSun · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

https://www.amazon.com/Roberts-Carpet-Tools-Scraper-10-194/dp/B000FK76AM

https://www.amazon.com/360-4-Inch-Professional-Stripper-20-Inch/dp/B000VYQMGG

Two options to consider. A local flooring specialty store will have them in stock, but they'll be significantly more expensive (brick and mortar tax). You may find them at a handyman / big box store, but don't hold your breath.

If you can knock it down to just a film/haze over the tile, then vinegar water mix should do the trick with a white abrasive pad. If that's still struggling, Mapei make a product designed for cleaning epoxy grout off tile called Kerapoxy Cleaner that would then be useful in that situation without having to go all the way to aggressive acids which pose quite a bit of danger. Kerapoxy cleaner is pretty hazardous enough by itself, if you have a respirator with filters designed for vapours I'd recommend using it, or getting one, or only doing small sections at a time, while keeping the area well ventilated.

u/rea1l1 · 1 pointr/Landlord

As someone who has removed a lot of crap from glass in my time, mix some dish soap and hot water and spread it over and around the sticker. Then get a good flat razer blade like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Hyde-Tools-13050-Delta-Scraper/dp/B000BPEPSC/ref=sr_1_13?keywords=scraper&qid=1569900031&s=gateway&sr=8-13

And go at it gently.

u/Ishtarrr · 1 pointr/JordanPeterson

Any actual JBP fan seeing that would get one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Hyde-Tools-13050-Scraper-Blades/dp/B000BPEPSC

And clean that up...

I have one similar to this one and it's my favorite. Zinsser 98018 Multi-Purpose Straight Edge Tool Paint Guide, 23-Inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RXA8A2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_pfC1CbQXDGCJW

u/racist_stl_redditor · 2 pointsr/AskCulinary

Nah I wouldn't do it, because you need a heavy duty spatula/trowel for the smashing and perhaps even an industrial scraper like this one they recommend for getting every last bit of beef off.

Just invest in a cast iron pan, best $25 you will ever spend in the kitchen guaranteed.

u/txbred · 2 pointsr/Whatisthis

again, Im sure the one he had, that was designed to aerate lawns DID reach dirt. But I am sure your grass was kept at more than a quarter inch high.

did your grandpa just plant seeds in huge patches? because the pattern this spike arrangement would make would make them closely jumbled. what was he planting? In my experience you plant in rows...I know exactly how and why tools are made, varying aspects of the job need different designs, its common sense.

I did my research, when I first posted exactly what to google search, where you would have found this which is exactly what OP has in his picture down to the handle design and everything, minus the guard, which can be detached.

could you show me the results of your research?

Here is the quick and dirty: Clear the room out as good as you can. Lay down painters plastic. Pick up a product called Dif and a tool called a paper tiger, available at hardware stores near the paint, or at regular old paint stores. Follow the instructions to apply. I use a pump sprayer to apply the dif mix. Use this style scraper but make sure you dull the blade's edge beforehand, or you will nick the crap out of your wall. I like to put a horizontal slice across the wall about chest high, then start pulling from that slice. Try to take the biggest piece off the wall that you can. Make sure you get both the wallpaper and the glue layer. The glue layer looks beige and fuzzy when dry but turns paper-bag brown when wet. When all the paper is off, go over the walls with a damp rag to remove any remaining bits of glue. If you have any questions let me know.

Source: painter

edit: You will need to reapply the dif fairly regularly, so I suggest wetting one wall/area at a time. Also added some info above.

I finally succeeded in removing duct tape residue from my tank using a razor blade paint removal tool that I found at Walmart for a few bucks.

u/ssschlippp · 4 pointsr/DIY

I used to do regrout and recaulk work every day. The best way is to use 4" razor blade/scraper to cut/scrape it out where you can by first cutting along the length of it and the scraping against the surface with the corner of the blade, changing the blades often helps a lot. Then go back with a grout getter to scrape whatever is left off the surface. If you keep the grout getter flat against one surface with firm pressure and the corner of the head pressed into the corner between the two surfaces you should be able to scrape pretty aggressively without scratching anything, though you do have to be extra careful on plastic, fiberglass, or any kind of resurfaced ceramic/porcelain (such as an epoxy resurfaced bathtub).

At the end of the day, there really is no magic fix. A heat gun or solvents can help, but sometimes, especially with really old caulk, it just takes a lot of patience and elbow grease.

u/TheVerloren · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Something like this will help after your spray the ceiling with water. ORIENTOOLS Heavy Duty 4-inch Razor Blade Scraper with Long-Handle, Cleaning Glass Wall Scraper, Painting Stripping Tools,Tile Adhesive Removal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075Z4B54H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZOfDCbHC9V65E

For stickers on glass, don't use goo-gone. Use a razor blade to scrape the glass.

https://www.amazon.com/Hyde-Tools-13050-Scraper-Blades/dp/B000BPEPSC

It does not scratch, and takes less than a minute. Also, use it for your glass top stoves too.... Years of baked on grime on the rings will come off and it will look like new.

u/wedgie · 7 pointsr/HomeImprovement

You can get a spiky tool that will puncture the wall paper and make it possible to either spread a wallpaper release agent or steam the wallpaper off.

I don't know anything about any of those products, but figured they would give you a place to start more research.

EDIT: you will probably need to skim coat some areas of the walls and retexture.

  1. I do not press the bacon
  2. I drain the grease after each batch, and scrape the pan with a chisel scraper.
I generally let my pan heat up 5 or 6 minutes on medium before I add the first batch.
u/ThatGuyinHouston · 1 pointr/houston

Good for Dallas for finding the adhesive that's most appropriate for the job.

I wish Houston had it and would use it a LOT.

So, yeah, FIRST: Don't leave your car parked on a public street without moving it for 3 days or more. If leaving it there is your only option, you have to go move it a foot or two every couple of days, but that's still wrong.

Second, get an old wash rag or terry cloth towel or rag and soak it with Goo Gone and drape it across the sticker residue. Let it sit there for 5 to 10 minutes. If it won't stay there, hold it or find some way to anchor it.

Then use a straight-edged razor, installed in a paint scraper (they cost less than 2 bucks) and the stuff will come off.

This will take a little effort - kind of like having to move a car every 2 days - so you may just have to sell the car.
