Hey y'all! This one was a bit harder to pull off but so far this is my favorite control scheme yet. I'll edit/update this post when I get time. Here's a quick explanation:

Similar to the Genji wii-sword, I was able to use the wii-motes as a base again. Using a Wii fit Dumbbell set (yes those exist, greatest find yet), I was able to easily just slip the remote into it. I configured the wii-mote to only output buttons while doing a bicep curl motion. So in order to shoot or shield, I would need press a button and curl the wii-mote at the same time. The Nun-chuck curls activated Zarya's shields. My arms did get tired after an hour or so, but I'll trade this over any exercise in the gym.

Y'all have been great at coming up with fun controller ideas and definitely continue to send some more of those. I'll continue to at least try to stream the adventure on Twitch. Thank y'all for the support and keep staying awesome!

For future reference, a wrist strap makes all the difference. I have a Wii so I took the strap from the remote and ordered this one off Amazon to put back on the Wii remote. It might seem like a pain in the ass to put your hand in and out of it if you're prone to picking it up for short bursts like me, but the security is worth it. It's saved my beloved MM3DSXL twice. I have a somewhat mild case of cerebral palsy which makes one hand function less than optimally, so maybe it's more of a given to me, but I don't see why it wouldn't be a good solution for anyone. I'm sorry that you have to deal with that, and I cannot stress a strap recommendation enough. Good luck.

I haven't done this on the RPi, but I have on a PC running Dolphin via a GameEx frontend. I've also only done this with an original Wiimote and an original 'sensor bar'.

I cut the connector off of the sensor bar and put a USB connector on it (it is only a 5v power source the Wii is providing to the sensor bar). The sensor bar is then clear-taped to bottom of the monitor and the wire tucked away (monitor is providing the USB 5v).

Stick the Wiimote in something like this: Wii Light Gun

Configure it to operate as a mouse, and have fun!

      • -
edit - Yes. the sensor bar you linked should work fine. In regards to the sensor bars: they're really just infrared LED's that alternatively flash.

edit 2 - Not just with Dolphin. With MAME and everything else as well. I don't recall the name of it, but I had a Windows based app that took the Wiimote motions and translated it to mouse movement.

It's official. They had a family challenge kind of set with a magnetic white board to keep score, and that nights winner got the medal. I bought it many years ago and still have that medal

EDIT: found the link since I got it on Amazon in 2010

I bought 2 of these when I ordered my Vive. Haven't even set up my Vive yet, but I can tell they're about double the thickness of the ones that came with the Vive. Probably should be a sticky or something for first-time visitors to the sub, if you ask me!

EDIT: And as I submitted this, noticed a comment in the Amazon reviews giving it 3/5 from someone buying these to upgrade from Vive's, and that they still do/can snap. So, take that for what it's worth, but might need to go above the <$5 each strap price range if you want pure security.

I played the whole game with a Classic Controller. (With one of these to keep the Wii Remote nearby)

It was very comfortable and enjoyable.

u/RatherRedditing · 2 pointsr/gamecollecting

Pretty sure it's a zigzag brand storage tower, they used to sell them at best buy for 30-50 dollars. Used to love the idea of the controller tray on top, but never wanted to pay that much.

Yup, just found the link on amazon.

Kind if like the Wii sure shot

No. Depending on the console you're using, you need either

or

Plus one audio splitter cable, like this one

Basically, these console cables have two video outputs. You plug the Composite end into your TV, and the S-Video end into your capture card. Then you use the audio splitter cables to have audio on both your card and your tv. It's pretty easy to set up on any CRT using composite

I had to look up the Sharpshooter, since I never saw or had one, and then pulled up an image of the Aim to look at them side by side and in my opinion man, but the Sharpshooter is the uglier of the two.

To my eye the Aim looks like a sleek, futuristic video game controller designed for VR—lacking any specific tactile features or details beyond the bare minimum required for game interactions, devs can have it stand in for a wide variety of devices & weapons without creating any cognitive dissonance as you see one thing and feel another. It won't feel exactly like any specific, real-world weapon, but any intentionally-designed in-game weapon could be made to match what you feel in your hands—not to mention non-gun items, such as musical instruments, magical artifacts, et cetera.

The Sharpshooter, on the other hand, at a glance appears to be a pump-action dildo for gun fetishists. And I don't mean that simply as a hyperbolic slight; this is just the sort of thing you see in a certain class of fetish-specific sex toys, where surface details of [whatever desired fetish] are recreated for the parts you hold in your hands and then an obvious dildo shape is stuck on the end. I can see how, if you have a thing for automatic firearms, having those sorts of details baked in to the controller probably make it seem better—but to me it reduces the scope and usefulness of the device, limiting its practical uses to games where I would be holding a present-day realistic automatic firearm.

That sort of specificity in controller design, while reasonable for something like Rock Band / Guitar Hero, soon leads to ridiculous ends like these controllers for Epic Mickey 2: Mickey's paintbrush and Oswald's clicker, or this fishing rod controller, or any of the plethora of Wii Sports accessories where you have a different plastic whatsit for every single game. I'd much rather have a multi-purpose device which can be re-skinned in VR than such a single-purpose device which will always feel to your hands like a present-day firearm.

its not a lightsaber, its supposed to be a representation of the rolled joint. i photoshopped over a cigarette to create that image from scratch. there are tons of lightswords out there being sold that resemble lightsabers but they are 100% legal (ex. http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Light-Sword-Nintendo/dp/B0018BA6W2). im sure someone will ask if the text is trademarked as well but its not an official star wars font and it was created by a font designer who marked it as ok for commercial use.

Yes, you can get a pack of 12 with different colors on Amazon for around $9.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LPS7A80/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_1ef7CbYCYWT7F

This would be a nice option so you can put a red strap on left controller and blue one on the right controller.

As someone who rowed for 3 semesters in high school, I feel qualified to advise you to work on your technique using this: Link

You'll never have to get wet again, and drugs make all video games better. Or video games make drugs better. I never did figure that out.

yueton 10pcs Universal Replacement Black Hand Wrist Strap Wristlet Wristband with Lock for Wii Remote Controller, Mobile Phone, MP3, Digital Camera https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LPRYP8Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_WE2IAbW7BMPRV

I use these :) immediately replaced those grey ones once I found out they had no locks.

u/GodOfAtheism · 1 pointr/gaming

I wouldn't use a rifle, personally. If I had the extra cash and was more into shooting games, I might grab something like this, and just rewrap the grip so it's not so uncomfortable. But, like I said, that's if I had the extra cash to blow on something like that and had literally nothing more interesting to spend my money on than another gun controller.

u/bigsphinxofquartz · 1 pointr/wii

I've read reasonably good things. Apparently the wireless version is kind of laggy.

Without the nunchuck: White / Blue (even cheaper)

u/JoshuaJSlone · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Here's a Wii version, which seems pretty gunny except for the color scheme. EDIT: Or this one.

u/DJChocoKay · 3 pointsr/Vive

Excited about the concept, but not really thrilled with the execution here.

I envisioned a HTC-approved tracker kit that would come with various IRL objects that I could attach a tracker or controllers to, that could stand in for objects that the standard controllers don't emulate well. A kit with:

  • An assault rifle thing to slide your controllers into
  • An ergonomic handle (sword, bat, golf club, Mjölnir, etc.)
  • Gloves or Wrist straps (limb tracking, boxing, shield, etc.)
  • Foot straps (limb tracking, kicking, etc.)
  • General purpose clip (attach to keyboard, beer mug, etc.)

The thing is, the IRL objects don't have to look like what they emulate in game, they just have to feel like it. A simple handle could become a host of objects in game.
I would gladly pay $100-$200 for such a standardized kit.

A one-off handgun prop makes little sense when the standard vive controller feels like a gun already.
u/_grizzo · 3 pointsr/gaming

The company that makes that attachment, PDP, is a third-party controller manufacturer. They've been making the wii nunchuk version for years, so same controller just using USB or 3.5mm in this case.

u/Peenkypinkerton · 1 pointr/gaming

They actually intended for people to buy this attachment.

u/ResolveHK · 1 pointr/Vive

i was looking at these ones...they seem okay i guess https://www.amazon.com/Wii-controller-Compatible-WIIMOTE-CONTROL-Nintendo/dp/B004I8IHNC

edit: nevermind, Ebay had them for 2$ + 4$ shipping. And in black!

u/PumkinSpiceTrukNuts · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

I have Rift (CV1) and Lenovo Explorer. Don't notice the SDE on the explorer unless I'm looking for it. If I've been playing on it for a while then switch to the Rift the SDE is so bad it's distracting... for 20 minutes or so. Then it's 'gone'.

Also, for the controllers get some of these, and ....eer, somewhere in this sub there's instructions to make the battery springs a bit bigger so they don't shake around inside and disconnect, and also instructions for taking them apart and cleaning the contacts.

u/English_Cat · 2 pointsr/gamecollecting

I was curious to know what that thing was, so I did some digging and it seems to be a part of CTADigital's 9 in 1 sports pack. Which is third party and seems to be badly reviewed. https://www.amazon.com/Wii-9-1-Sports-Kit-Nintendo/dp/B0019N6RG8

u/sicount · 2 pointsr/wii

Have a look at this product: http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Classic-Controller-Grip-Nintendo/dp/B000PHX4KQ

It lets you clip the Wii remote to the back of a Classic Controller.
