Honestly, learning the software isn't going to teach you how to animate, you'll just know where the buttons are. I still have a raggedy copy of Preston Blair's book in my book case, which has been around for 40 years.

Another really great book is Tony White's Animator's Workbook. It has practical lessons and some good simple demonstrations of key frames, and exaggerated actions and setting up cycles.

And since you want to learn, you should also get a peg bar, some paper, some pencils, and buy or make a light box.

Now, all of this is if you wish to do animation traditionally on paper, scan the drawings, and finish them in the computer. If you want to draw directly into the software, you'll need to ask someone more knowledgeable than me on which tablet to buy. I understand the Cintique tablets are good, but they are basically a Windows tablet designed for drawing on.

Edit: Cintiq -ue. Told you. Don't know nothing about them.

Oh man. There are several items on my wish list that I keep there as "dream items". The someday if I get my hands on a bunch of money items. The one my heart is set on, though, is this set of colored pencils. Someday!

u/Remynesc · 2 pointsr/redditgetsdrawn

Thanks! The lead itself in the pencil is made up of different colors, so the outcome can be unpredictable sometimes. Very fun to use though!

Try searching art-related hashtags like “sketchbook” or “lineart” or “illustration”. Inktober is also going on right now which is an art challenge where artists try to draw 1 illustration a day based off of word prompts, so the “inktober” tag is a great way to find artists too.

A harder pencil is definitely one way to go; they leave very little graphite on the paper so they're light and easy to erase. If you're going to be shading in pencil as well you can often not even bother to erase them; they'll just disappear into the shading.

These non-photo blue Prismacolor pencils are also good for blocking in drawings. (They're literally non-photo blue, though. The marks don't show up on film, but do show up if they're scanned, but they're so light that just a small contrast or brightness adjustment will make them disappear.)

So here's how I organize my pens

I bought some of those multicolor pen grips - Plucky Pencil Grips, Assorted Colors (25-Count) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FDGTXWL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Gvv6CbSH4PR49

I picked three colors:

Purple - Indica (or dominant)

Orange - Sativa (or dominant)

Green - High CBD

I cut strips of the pen grips to make the bands that go around the glass of the cart (not the metal, some people seemed concerned it would overheat.

Then, each CCell or Jupiter battery has some special tape on it. I keep a Google Keep checklist with the name of the tape or the type of battery if it's different than the free ones I keep stockpiling.
Then in that keep list, I nest what cart/strain is attached to it with it's percentages, pertinent medical information and it's effects on me. when I kick the cart, I click the check and archive it. If I get that cart or strain again, I uncheck it and move it back to a battery.

Then I put them all in this pen organizer. Cosmos Clear Acrylic Paint Brush... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FK7L26N?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

If she likes art, it might be fun to get her Japanese brand color pencils or Sakura coupy pens . Where I grew up in Japan, we all had coupy pens for school. Also maybe buy her Japanese coloring books to go with it.

Well, watercolour pencils in the Candle one! These bad boys specifically. I also use GraphMaster or Letraset ProMarkers Markers in that one and the Character one, which are great for blending :)

u/LOTFRbitches · 2 pointsr/nostalgia

I would buy a book to appease my parents and spend the rest of my fifteen dollars on fuzzy pens and smelly erasers and, of course, those obnoxious first gen mechanical pencils. Remember, the kind that had the capsules you had to insert and if you were missing one insert you were totally unable to write (Unless you pressed down super hard with your finger as you wrote, deeming your hand writing unreadable but totally worth it).

Edit: Pencil I was talking about

Grease pencils also works well for this. If you decide on grease pencils use the ones you twist from the top versus pulling the paper from the bottom

You want this and not this

u/FallenWyvern · 2 pointsr/characterdrawing

If you haven't yet, try watercolour pencils. They go on like coloured pencils but you can wet them to create all sorts of blending effects.

They're relatively inexpensive too

You're in luck, I went back in my order history and managed to find the kit I was talking about.

The marker was the other item I was forgetting.

What about Amazon? You need to spend like €20 to avail of free shipping though AFAIK, but you could always just get some other supplies whilst you're buying the pencils.

I really like silver grease pencils for steel. The line sticks around just long enough to be seen when cutting. http://www.amazon.com/Sanford-Verithin-Colored-Pencil-Silver/dp/B0096XWP0U

The pencils you linked are regular coloured pencils, not watercolour pencils. You may want to consider these which are also made by Prismacolor.

I actually bought this set: http://www.amazon.com/Sanford-Prismacolor-Colored-Accessory-7-Piece/dp/B000OKZYJ8
