  I'm going to address each of these individually:

  Two words: access and comfort.
  
  You come home from work, you plop down on your couch, you pick up your controller, push a button, and bam: you're in-game. That's the console experience. On PC, you have to boot up the computer, install updates, run Steam, etc. etc. etc. The process is pretty simple, but it feels unfamiliar to people used to a console experience.
  
  The other part is your PC gaming setup is probably at your desk, where you're used to doing work, maybe have an uncomfortable chair, don't typically bring drinks or snacks, etc. In your mind, the couch is the designated "social/relaxation" space, and it typically has all the comforts and amenities for a proper gaming setup, whereas your PC space probably does not have those amenities by default.
  
  The solution is twofold:
  
  

1. Get used to the process of starting games on PC. It's a bit more complex than the console experience, but it's not actually that complicated. It also allows you to do more stuff before/during (Shadowplay, Discord, etc)
   
   
2. Do a little work to make your PC gaming setup feel like a "social/relaxation" space, just like your couch. Maybe invest in a comfier chair, bring a mini-fridge, and really differentiate this part of your life from the "work" part of your life (especially if you work a desk job). A little comfort/ergonomics goes a long way.
   
   Always remember, though, that gaming should never feel like a chore. If you're not having fun PC gaming, then don't PC game! I know a lot of people on Reddit are fanatical about PC gaming, but, truth be told, everyone's different and has different gaming needs. THAT'S OK. Just because I have a ton of fun with it doesn't mean you have to too!

   The difference lies in the difference between a controller and a mouse/keyboard. A mouse/keyboard has a much higher skill ceiling to use, because a mouse can aim with a much higher speed/precision than a thumbstick. That difference is inherent and won't go away.
   
   Unfortunately, the only solution to this is to get used to the difference. Learn yourself how to master the art of mouse aim. It's going to be different, and you're going to start out a beginner (as with any skill). That's completely okay. I've written a helpful guide in another thread on what best to do to improve with mouse aim (including a bunch of setup stuff that has NOTHING to do with practice!).
   
   Fortunately, this is only an issue with shooter games; all other games should play exactly as you expect them to, exactly as they play on console! Did you know you can even use your PS4 controller on your PC? Better yet, invest in a wired Xbox controller, and most games will support it with NO additional setup!

   That's ok. Everyone starts here, including me.
   
   I have discovered three IRL friends that will PC game with me consistently. I'm fortunate enough have gone to college in a field with a bunch of nerds, so it was a natural association for me.
   
   But if you don't have that, you can make online friends! Here's how:
   
   
3. Invest in a microphone.
   
   I cannot stress this enough. You will NEVER make proper online gaming friends without one. Headsets with microphones have a massive price range; find one that you're comfortable investing in, but definitely GET ONE.
   
   
4. Play team-based multiplayer games.
   
   The best game for this, in my opinion, by far, is Overwatch. It's teamwork-focused, objective-based, and designed to be anywhere on the spectrum between fun/social to serious/competitive. It has rewards systems in place for good social behavior, and people LOVE to be on-comms, even in casual modes!
   
   Other good games are anything teamwork-focused, like R6S, Counter-Strike, TF2, DotA, and others.
   
   If you're willing to lose your soul, you can also dip a toe into MMOs like World of Warcraft, Star Wars: The Old Republic, or EVE Online, but that will net you by far the best results in terms of making friends. I cannot, however, recommend MMOs to everyone, especially someone new to PC gaming and who most likely plays casually.
   
   Bad games for this are individual-focused games like CoD, Fortnite, and PUBG. Even in team modes, not a ton of teamwork is involved, so comms are usually pretty dead.
   
   
5. Put yourself out there.
   
   Get on comms. Every single game. Even when no one else is.
   
   Be friendly, nice, outgoing, etc. Socialize as if you were at a party and wanted to make friends; the same social principles apply. Sure, talk about strategy and stuff, but be positive and social. People will be attracted to that.
   
   
6. Use LFG tools.
   
   A lot of games will have "team finders" to put together teams in a way that's more user-focused than matchmaking. Overwatch has its "find a group", Destiny has DestinyLFG, Counter-Strike has FaceIT, etc. People using these tools will be WAY more likely to be social than "randoms" in matchmaking.
   
   
7. Get Discord and try to get into someone's channel
   
   If someone invites you to their Discord channel, ACCEPT! This can be a gateway to meeting lots of fun new people who want to play with you. Discord is probably the most powerful tool for making you friends; the difficulty is that you need an invite to join anyone's group, and people are sometimes exclusive about it.

   You say you have a 1080p 60Hz monitor. That is just fine for gaming, and 99% of gamers will be using exactly one of these. If you're comfortable with it, I see no reason at all to upgrade.
   
   If you want to upgrade, though, check out Logical Increments' Monitor Guide. It has a TON of recommendations on what to buy.
   
   Just so you know what to look for, here's a rough overview on monitors:
   
   

• 1080p, 1440p, 4K, etc, are resolutions, i.e, the amount of detail your monitor can display. You probably know this one, though, so I'll skip it.
  
  
• 60 Hz, 144 Hz, etc, are refresh rates, i.e, how fast your monitor updates. If video is a "slideshow" of still images, this rate is how many "slides" it can show you per second. As long as that number's at or above 60 (which it should be for all modern monitors), it will make NO DIFFERENCE for watching videos. For gaming, however, it makes a MASSIVE difference in terms of smoothness and responsiveness, ESPECIALLY when it comes to shooter games. Here's a cool demonstration on frame rates, but it only goes up to 60. A faster monitor will make your games look and play EVEN SMOOTHER, provided your PC can push that many frames per second.
  
  
• TN, VA, and IPS are panel types. IPS has the best color reproduction but worst responsiveness and highest price. TN has the worst color reproduction but best responsiveness and lowest price. VA is in-between. All "responsiveness" levels on modern monitors are good enough for gaming, though, so pick IPS if you can afford it and it's available with the resolution / refresh rate you want.
  
  
• HDMI, DisplayPort, and DVI are ports and represent the interface from your computer. Get a monitor with DisplayPort, hands-down. It's the best one.
  
  
• FreeSync and GSync are adaptive frame technology. They remove screen tearing without sacrificing responsiveness (like Vsync sacrifices). It's not essential, but it's a nice feature to have. The only downside is that GSync monitors can be expensive (though FreeSync monitors typically are not). AMD graphics card support FreeSync only, and Nvidia graphics cards support GSync only.
  
  For gaming, I recommend getting a 144Hz monitor over getting a 4K (or 1440p) monitor. I personally have a 1080p 144Hz monitor, and I feel no need to upgrade.

CPU

The basic standard for a higher end gaming pc these days is a modern i5. Intel’s i5-4440 is the base i5 of their latest CPU release, and will perform excellently.

MOTHERBOARD

Gigabyte makes quality pc parts and this mother board has a modern chip set, onboard USB 3.0 headers and six sata 6 Gb/s ports. Besides the sata 6 ports this motherboard isn’t that feature rich, but it is more affordable board and you will be unlikely to use those extra features anyway.

RAM

A basic set of 1 x 8GB RAM stick. Nothing to fancy but it should do the job well.

SSD

Once you experience a SSD you just can’t bring yourself to continue to let others suffer. The Curial MX100 is a well-reviewed modern SSD that has very good performance. It will make your boot up times super-fast, your OS will feel snappier and anything installed on it will open so much quicker.

HDD

1TB should be plenty of space for a good amount of games. But if you find it is not enough, you will have three open sata 6 ports for plenty of expandability.

GPU

The R9 290 is the best high end “bang for your buck” card right now. Now you could go with a cheaper R9 290 but it might not have as nice of a cooler on it. Sapphire makes some of the best coolers for AMD cards and should perform great while staying cool and silent.

CASE

Corsair knows how to make a good case and the 200R is a great case at a great price.

PSU

A well trusted power supply that will be enough to power the thirsty R9 290, plus as an added bonus, it is semi modular!

Optical Drive

Technically it is entirely possible to go without a disk drive now a days, but I think they are nice to have.

OS

I understand that you already have access to an OS so I did not include it in the price.

Monitor

For 1080p 23” really seems to be the sweet spot, big enough you can see it easily, but small enough that the pixel density isn't to noticeable. One thing to note is that this monitor doesn't have built in speakers, so you would have to use the headphones to hear any audio coming from your pc.

Keyboard

More of a basic keyboard but it is decent (especially for its price)

Headphones

A solid pair of head phones with a balanced sound signature. They should do well for music and games.


Additional thoughts

The only thing I would really consider "missing" is speakers and some sort of game controller. I especially recommend a game controller if you plan on playing either of the dark souls games. If you happen to have a wired xbox 360 controller you can just download some software and simply plug it into a USB port. Or if you have a wireless receiver you can use wireless controllers as well. If you need speakers and a controller (at this budget) let me know and I will tweak some things. Just so you know a wired controller costs a little over $30 a wired is around $35 but the wireless reciever you will need runs around $11.

CPU and GPU - It comes with what is close to an R7 240 GPU. Should be competent in new stuff at 720p, and maybe even 1080p with the settings turned down.

Keyboard - Love it. Range is great. Batteries last forever. Has a really cool left mouse button on the upper left hand corner.

Game Pad - Best cost/value product out there.

Game Pad Wireless Receiver - Needed for the controller.

I'm glad more people know about this, I don't use Playstation controllers but the issue is the same with Xbox One controllers as well and a few 360 controllers. I don't play Rocket League either haha, I actually found about the issue when playing GTA V on PC, and I noticed that I could spin faster on a bike after switching from my Xbox One controller to my 360 controller. If anyone has any information on how to edit the settings for the Xbox One controller to make the range higher I'd really appreciate, because my only option is to use other controllers.

Anyways hopefully I can help you guys out a bit who are looking for a better controller, I've bought both of these 360 controllers and I've noticed the range of motion is a lot higher than the PS4/XB1 controllers. For some reason it seems like 3rd party controllers have a higher range of motion.

The Afterglow Controller I have has a higher range than the Madcatz controller but the Madcatz controller is still pretty high. Also keep in mind I've had the Afterglow for about 5 years now, so I doubt they would have made any design changes to mess with the range but it's always possible.

One more thing, I don't really expect an answer from this but does anyone know anything about this controller? I've been wondering how the range is compared to the original Xbox One controller.

I play both console and PC, there's serious positives and negatives to both but I want to set a few things straight.

controllers, keep in mind this is the equivalent of buying a mouse and keyboard for PC gaming and Alot of PC gamers own $50+ mice/keyboards.

Yes first party Wireless controllers are $50 new, but they're usually on sale for $40 or less wired are $40 new but again usually on sale, I got mine a few months ago for $25

Also there's some decent enough third party controllers that cost less such as afterglow And some that cost a little more This is Xbox prices mind you, they're the more expensive of the two and there's considerably less third party support on the Xbox

Headsets

The best (in my opinion) mono set for the Xbox is $10 But usable ones are as cheap as [$5] (http://www.amazon.com/KMD-Xbox-360-Live-Gaming-Headset/dp/B003A71XKQ/ref=pd_cp_e_0). Stereo headsets cost a bit more at $30 and up but thats the same on the PC too.

Also console games drop in price relatively quickly with one exception, the COD series.

I mean, honestly, I would like something like this that allows you to hotswap the layout of all 4 components.

In the current gen, I think the PS4 controller is the most comfortable and has the best buttons, but the XB1 has the best control sticks and the most practical layout, but I love the WiiU pro for classic games because using the DPad and the buttons makes it feel like a SNES controller.

Sold off my desktop last year because I needed a mobile workstation/gaming setup. I no longer need one. Truth be told, I never needed one, but considering I never move it...no reason to hold on to it.

So, it's now okay to spend money with Microsoft again? But to answer some of your questions...

There is an Xbox Live Gold Family Pack that gives you four Gold subs for $100. It is nice because it gives you convenient parental controls, in addition to a discount. I use this subscription for my family and like it pretty well for the most part. it has some quirks, but it generally works as advertised. You will, for better or worse, need to set up Windows Live IDs for each account (assuming you want to go this route). If you want to game online, use netflix streaming, or many other apps, you need a Gold sub.

As for chat, the standard Xbox headset has always worked fine for me, but when gaming alone I prefer a stereo headset with integrated chat. I have the chatpad and rarely use it. Usually for entering codes and messaging I just use the Xbox Live website. When people annoy me (and it's not always the kids) on chat, i mute them. it's pretty easy to do. if they are total jackasses, you can report them, and Live will also avoid matching you with them online in the future.

I have always found the stock controller to be pretty good, except the d-pad sucks. Microsoft has a version with a "transforming" d-pad, that I like as well. you can hook up a keyboard, but only for text entry. there is no native support for keyboard and mouse control in any 360 games.

Microsoft just updated the 360 dashboard, and now they focus on "apps". Netflix is a good one. So is the ESPN app, if you like sports. There is a Last.fm app that I use a lot. There are others, browse around and see if any interest you. There is an official Windows Media Center app, that should great with Windows Media Center on your Windows PCs, but in the distant past, i found it performed quite poorly, and I have not tried it since. You might see how it works for you.

Emulators...was this an Xbox 360, or the original Xbox? I'm not sure how easily you could run emulators on a 360 and still use it for online gaming. It would definitely require modification. I am not involved in modding at all, so I'm not a good source here, but Microsoft takes modding very seriously, and they ban consoles for it all the time. a banned console can never play on Live again, even with different gamertags. it still works fine offline though.

I play on the DS4 like you and I love it. You should look into the Madcatz FightPad series if they look like something you could use. You can get the 360 models relatively cheap like the one I showed (actually thats the one I own as well) and its quite responsive and comfortable. I don't use it simply cause I got so accustomed to the Joystick on the DS4

I have a bunch of items listed as highest priority. It was a guitar up until I bought one for myself at guitar center. Now I need things like a stand, picks, a strap, etc.

My highest priority item is probably this toolkit which has been on my WL since I joined RAOA. I have no idea why I still haven't just gotten it for myself considering I could have many times over. We have basically no tools in our apartment, so I'm even more useless than normal when it comes to fixing things.

I REALLY need a new 360 controller. I may or may not have shattered mine a while back, and I'm currently playing with it held together by tape, and sometimes a button or two doesn't work. It's really frustrating.

I also have GT6 listed as highest, because it is honestly my favorite gaming franchise of all time, and I love every one of the GT games.

This thing is listed as highest because I would really like to listen to my own music in the car, but don't have an aux cable. I can get one, but I need a special part (because my car stereo is set up REALLY stupid), and it's $120 and comes from the UK. That item is listed as highest priority too, but it's not on amazon.

Steam Controller - might be able to maintain some continuity in letting you play mouse-needed games from a controller, but otherwise is a pretty good hybrid that will work for everything and has robust support through Steam, and totally customizable configurations on a per game basis. 2. Xbox 360 Controller - Will work on basically every game, but some games - even those with 360 pad support - will be retarded and not recognize it, like Dead Rising 2 Off the Record. Not much to say, it's a great controller. 3. Xbox One Controller - better than the 360 controller, but, despite natively having drivers in Windows 8 and 10, it has a lot of driver related problems. Does not include accessories - if you have an S type or newer controller, they have Bluetooth support. You can only pair one XB1 controller via Blue Tooth at a time to your PC. Wireless adapter accessory is somewhat unreliable - it may not ever work for you, period, might work fine. Controller - $40 if lucky to $70+. I have 3, got one for free, one with console, paid $60 or so for my Gears 4 limited ed version. 4. Dual Shock 4 - I have no experience whatsoever with this controller on PC but it does require a separate adapter for wireless. Personally I don't like the feel of it, it's too lightweight when I have used it and the sensor bar seems pointless. 5. Logitech F310 - Wired but absolutely solid controller, no input delay. The layout is PS2 Dual Shock 2, with Xbox face buttons and PS2 style sticks, but the actual thumbgrips are more like XB360 if I remember right. D-pad is one solid piece like the 360 controller. It will work with literally everything, flawlessly, except games that have hardcoded controls like KOF98 / 2000 etc. The only annoying thing is the xinput/directinput switch is in the place where you would expect the Select button to be on a Dual Shock 2, and the select / start are above that. This can often lead to you changing the input on accident, which will basically screw you in any third person game because both camera and character control will stop working. Also the back of the controller is more angled than the DualShock 2. You should be able to grab one for cheap - they've been around for at least 6 years. Despite the 1 piece d-pad I actually think it does fairly well for fighting games, too. It's well made and can survive a lot of abuse.    I personally would recommend the F310, if near the PC but the cord is not very long, so more likely the F710, or the 360 controller. I like the XB1 controller but it's battery life is simply unacceptable, and I don't use it enough that I'm willing to consider the sync problems acceptable when I do.
   

If you're doing KBM out of necessity but think you'd be happier playing with a controller, I'd say go controller.

I am 100% on board w/ keyboard but that's because it's how I play games, especially games with driving, unless I absolutely can't for some reason (Super Meatboy was just impossible at some parts for me without a controller, I can play emulators with a keyboard but when you start getting into the Playstation era it gets a bit difficult and less fun).

I choose to not use a controller because I know that A) I will be objectively worse and B) I just like how KBM feels.

It sounds like you might be happier with a controller. I don't know much about the steam controller so I can't really give specific recommendations, but back in the day I bought one of these:

If you decide to go the keyboard route, mechanical KBs exist for cheaper than what you see on sale from the standard selection RAZER BLACKWIDOW XXX DEATH RGB SLICER TURBOv2 OWNAGE . I use a razer at home and a Rosewill for work, the Razer is nice but it was really indulgent and doesn't add much that the Rosewill doesn't have other than macro keys.


I've also just played on regular old keyboards and they work fine, so barring a mechanism failing (like you've described in your setup) really any keyboard should be about as good as the next.

I would get a Xbox controller as most games use it as a base (I use the Xbox 360 Afterglow controller)

Also, look into getting a 12 month subscription of Xbox Gold (or maybe 3 or 6 months depending on your financial situation). Right now Microsoft is giving away 2 games for gold subscribers a month. Right now we can download Assassin's Creed 2 for free. You can usually find a 12 month subscription for $35 if you scour the internet hard enough.

And not mods (well, you may be able to mod it depending on the model; some are easier than others), but if you sign up for bing rewards, you can earn free Microsoft points. I've cashed out over $100 since the start of the year. I pretty much don't have to buy games any more.

I used it at a small nvidia event thing before it was released, but using the final retail model. I didn't really like it too much, I found the screen was a bit too small for some decent gaming, it was heavier than I expected it to be, the controller doesn't feel like it'd be comfortable for long term use and I overall didn't really get the point of it, as without the use of a VPN and always having a strong 4G LTE connection, you can only use it in your house, you know, the place where your PC is, and it's not like you can stream it from your PC, play on shield, do other stuff on pc (such as another user), overall, there's much cheaper solutions to this, if you have a gameklip and a wireless xbox controller with the dongle and some software called splashtop.

Also, shield requires a minimum of a GTX 660, the DIY version works with anything, except it does only stream at 800x600 (stable) and it only works on games that have borderless windowed (or just windowed, if you can deal with start menus etc), but it's a solution if you only play a few games and have a smartphone.

TL;DR: Screen too small, bit too heavy, uncomfortable to use for long periods of time, cheaper alternative if you don't mind some setbacks

Couple more reasons for the 360 controller:

Most games support it out of the box, and most will replace the UI elements with their respective buttons. So, instead of saying "Press TAB to view the score", it will say "Press (BACK) to view the score" or "Right trigger to shot web" and such.

Off the top of my head I know that Skyrim and NFS: Hot Pursuit support it, along with RFG and just about every GFWL game.

You can also pick up a wired controller if that floats your boat, they work great as well and are slightly more hardy than the wireless FOB.

There's also a couple of variants of the 360 controller, the Onza and the Adjustable D-Pad one that fixes the shitty dpad a little bit.

if you're playing on an xbox and don't mind a wired controller, get one of these. I got one as a cheap replacement to one a friend broke: it was going to be their controller since she tends to wear out the analog sticks on everything she plays with but I liked it so much that I kept it as mine. I think its actually a bit better than an official controller, especially for fighting games, because its almost identical to a microsoft controller in every way except for a couple: the start and back buttons are placed a bit differently (in a way that I find makes it so that I don't hit them accidentally quite as often) and also the d-pad is tons better: its raised up out of the "well" it sits in. sort of reminds me of sega's old D-pads on the genesis really.

also makes a great pc game controller, since it registers as an xbox controller.

the light is a bit annoying but there is a button on the back to turn it off, or have it only light up whenever the rumbles happen.

I think that using the controller is better to be honest, to me it means you can be more accurate but that may be because im used to using a controller because I have only recently switched to PC gaming. I use a Rock Candy Controller that I got on sale at best buy for like $15, and it's working great.

While there will probably be rudimentary mouse and keyboard controls just like other xbox ports, I highly recommend buying a wired xbox (or xbox knock-off) controller for your PC. There are so many games that just play better on controller and as an avid PC gamer I believe this is one of them.

Easiest thing to do would be to buy a wired 360 controller.

The game works perfectly with the 360 controller, no setup required.

If you go the wireless route you do need to purchase a wireless receiver. I bought a cheap knock-off receiver (was a lot cheaper than the official one) but windows doesn't automatically detect it as a 360 controller wireless receiver. You have to do the whole device manager dance to get the correct driver loaded. After that it worked perfectly. I imagine the official wireless receiver will be plug-and-play with windows 10.

I use Xbox 360 controller. It works amazing. Most games have it already setup and the keys map as soon as you plug the controller in.
The controller I use. I honestly hate the keyboard/mouse. (will probably get hate for that) but I cant stand them. I have played on consoles only except for the last year or so and I still love the controller.

I don't think that PCSX2 and SCPServer are related, since PCSX2 is a PlayStation 2 emulator and SCPServer is a DS4 connector. However, I've read a lot about the usefulness of the PS4 controller for gaming and from what I've read, you're better of using a Xbox controller because microsoft acually supports that. I find it kinda strange that this sub recommended you the PS4 controller since steam doesn't fully support it, while is does support a Xbox controller for most games.

You might want to sell your PS4 controller on Ebay and check if there are any cheap Xbox controllers for sale, or look at some aftermarket controllers like this one

If you didn't know, the d-pad can actually transforms from the disc into a traditional plus d-pad. Probably your easiest and cheaper option. If you know who Fanatiq is (a pad player of MvC2 fame), he uses this pad when playing MvC3 and said that he loves it.

Microsoft-branded wireless adapters require almost zero setup on Win 7+. Plug it in, give it a few seconds to find/install the hardware, sync controller, done. (and then you're ready to add up to 3 more controllers, easy peasy)

EDIT: If you're going with wired, get the Xbox One controller. Plugs in with the included microUSB charging cable, detects instantly, bam.

I have small hands as well. Have you tried one of these mini controllers? I'd recommend the version that's realtree camo because it has a good rubberized texture that is easy to hold. Some of the translucent ones can get a bit slippy if your hands start to sweat. What games in particular are giving you trouble?

So I've had this third party xbox 360 controller for a while, and the right stick has this weird issue where no matter how you control the stick, in game the camera can only move diagonally, so basically when you move the right stick to the right, the x-axis and the y-axis increase at the same time. Anyone have any pointers on trying to fix this? I've done multiple driver resets across multiple pcs, but it has not worked properly once. And incase its unfixable, whats a cheap xbox controller I can get thats wireless and works perfectly?

Those ones cost a pretty penny because they are officially licensed by MLG. But it just shows that they are capable of quality if professionals use them.

I own an Afterglow for Xbox 360. It's a pretty good controller, but I don't like the fact that it's smooth plastic. I get sweaty palms when I game a lot and that makes for a slippery controller.

Now I'm using a Steam Controller for all of my PC gaming. I like it, but it definitely took some getting used to.

I'd recommend just buying a wired brand name controller. Everything is plug and play these days, so you'll have no problem setting it up.

I only have one controller and it's this. I would play with the controller and my girlfriend would play with the keyboard. But, I know you can play with all controllers because when you play local co-op you have to go into a menu and choose which player uses which controller.

The PDP Afterglow is a solid bet. It's a cabled Xbox 360 controller that I personally find to have better ergonomics than the traditional 360 controller. D-pad on it is a damned sight better than the regular Xbox 360 controller's as well.

The Hori Gempad is another cheap option, and I can personally attest that the D-pad on the controller is fantastic for 2D fighters like SFV or Arc System Works games.

That said, corded official Xbox 360 controllers are like $15-$20 on Amazon. They're fine for 3D games but the D-pad is garbage.

You have to turn off auto aim, and it works well enough on most ps4 games. That said, I've since upgraded my PC and will not likely play anymore FPS games on console... Witcher 3 (and similar style games) on console is fun for me just using the regular native controller.

I play a lot of twin stick shooters and platformers and my Afterglow 360 controller I got for $20 2 years ago just isn't cutting it anymore.

I never liked the original dpad on the 360 controller. It pretty much ruined fighting games on the Xbox for me. I've always found the best way to test a dpad on an emulator is to boot up Contra and try and hold right/down so your character runs to the right while aiming diagonally down in front of him. If he lays down or just runs to the right, the controller isn't going to work. If you're looking for another Xbox controller you could spend another $40-$50 on an 8-way dpad. I recommend a dualshock 3 (Sony) controller if you have one, as the dpad is far more responsive.

Not really for D-pad reliant games, though. Despite having the best overall controller, the 360's D-pad is a mushy POS. For modern games that focus on analog sticks, a 360 controller is perfect, but for older games that rely on a D-pad I use an SNES controller with one of these.

EDIT: MS did release a pro controller with a twist-out better D-pad, but it is $50 separately and can't really be considered the official 360 controller when it's not packed in with the system.

I have it and love it. The morphing d-pad isn't that helpful because it is still just a disk that moves the exact same as the normal controller. The main reason I wanted it was for the sticks; instead of the bumps that wear out for grip it has an entire ridge around. They don't wear out and feel much better on my thumbs.

Those worried about price; you can get it on amazon for $45.

I bought mine off Amazon for like $30 using Amazon Prime.

Those have excellent d-pads when they're raised, and I believe the "transforming d-pad" gimmick was a ruse by Microsoft to circumvent the d-pad patent. I've never found a situation where you'd want the less accurate d-pad mode. ;)

As to how you can get used to keyboard and mouse, it's all about practice, you'll get better and better

I use the afterglow Xbox 360 controller! It's a USB controller compatible with most games on pc (you don't even need to do setup) and you can just plug it into your laptop.

You do have to manually install the drivers though, so you have to download the regular Xbox controller drivers,

then go into devices on control panel, select the controller, find drivers, then manually find drivers, then you can select from a list of installed drivers (which the Xbox drivers should be included in).

The controller feels like a normal Xbox controller, which is what I'm used to, so I approve.

I got this on Amazon for around $11. I eventually switched to a much nicer official Xbox controller. But I still have the controller and I used it for a long time.

I've had both and prefer the xbox controller. I have a musculoskeletal disorder that prevents me from using controllers like the PS4 style with the analog in the middle on the left side.

This is literally the only reason I didn't keep my Steam controller.

I'm still hoping for a new Steam controller that has interchangeable controls, like this from MadCatz.

Much better. I have both and the F710 is collecting dust. The analog sticks on it are just horrible. I actually bought this one. Tron Xbox 360 The rubber grips and light weight are awesome. I paid 40 for it at gamestop.

That is only counting Amazon. Lets see what the used controllers are going for at lowest 23$. And as a customer I now have virtually no reason to shop at gamestop because why waste my money when I can use Amazon who is a much better middleman than gamestop? You would go out of business because the competition is making a better offer than you. It only works for gamestop because of low customer knowledge, laziness, and a good chunk of gamers are minors. Though on occasion gamestop will have the better price or close enough to be worth the extra for convenience, but that's rare in my experience.

You don't have to believe, source here It's not as absurd as others said but it's still shows how much Gamestop relies on used games sales.

Double reverse lawyered. Not all controllers come with play and charge kits.

Unfortunately this was one of the less attractive official colors, and it was one of the few that came with the upgraded twistable d-pad. Fortunately, a $2 AliExpress shell would make it not look so bad.

I use an X-Box 360 controller, and have no problem with the d-pad. It works very well, and since it's a Microsoft product, the drivers download automatically, it's plug(-configure)-and-play. Just make sure you get one with a USB connector, like the Afterglow

Any Xbox 360 or Xbox One controller will work just fine (well, some people have a hate-on for the original 360's D-Pad).

When it comes to 360 controllers, I'm a fan of the PDP Rock Candy. They're cheap, but outside of lacking rumble, it doesn't feel like they skimped on parts.

Well, this is what I used if you can figure out how to scrounge up the dough. Dark Souls is a lot of fun but I don't think you'll enjoy it as much with a kb/m, it was designed around a controller.

This is what I use. They cost around $30 and they light up the same colour as the circuit board. It's a bit expensive but because it's a 360 controller, there is no extra setup required like motionjoy or xpadder.

It has a lot of bad reviews but I've had it since December and use it to play Dark Souls and co-op with my girlfriend and have had no issues. I have four of these for co-op stuff. They work fine with no drivers on my pc.

The link i have sent is actually fairly expensive, not sure why. I picked mine up for £15 or less from asda so shop around.

Keep in mind that the one which comes with the dongle ($42) is only slightly more costly than the one that doesn't ($36). Not $20 more. So if you don't have a controller at all, it's not worth buying them separately.

I use an XBox One controller. Standard wired XBox controller will also work. (Playing this, among a bunch of other platformers and fighters suddenly, killed my other controller so I upgraded to the XB1)

I do but that doesn't matter since here's Amazon.com which gives me American pricing (amazon.ca gives Canadian). The controller is $37 on sale from $50. There's some that are less than $30 but they're all on sale. Regular price they're no less than $40 unless you're looking at off brand controllers which are $30 regular price.

They make controllers that are flipped anyway, fuck they make them interchangeable now too.

I've had mine since launch, don't use it whatsoever. I plug in my 360 controller to my PC, and I don't use my Steamlink because a) I don't need it at all and b) the minor delay is unbearable for me.

If you don't have a x360 controller, you can get one for 30$ on amazon, but you lose the configuration options you'd get with Steam and it's not wireless.
