After doing some more browsing, I have settled on these two products -

I am basically going to replace the front plate and grips with the matte white cover, and then install the black buttons that come with it, as well as install the gold D-pad and triggers that I am ordering.

If you can't tell, my inspiration is the Lunar white controller they have, but for a fraction of the cost.

Do you think the buttons not registering could be due to firmware and could be fixed with an update? That's the only issue I have with mine that I've noticed. Y button doesn't register all the time and my thumbsticks on the app lag/get stuck for a split second.

I bought mine through Costco and they have lifetime returns so I'm not sure if the ms warranty is worth it? I'd have to rent a car and drive over an hour to get to my closest one so that brings up the price significantly.

Also I use this controller skin and think it's so much more comfortable with it. It's funny bc the reason I bought it was bc of the grips showing signs of peeling on the v1 but I love it.

You can get pretty decent face plates on amazon for around $15, I put a red and black one on mine and the texture of it is pretty nice.

unfortunately there is no real easy or quick fix for this. This happens because of the "re-designed" bumpers in the 3.5 mm controllers, making them "easier" to push, both bumpers are actually one piece of flimsy plastic. Looks like the bumper snapped off. If you have the T8 screw driver you can open it up and super glue the bumpers back together, but this is only a temporary fix because they will snap again, mine lasted about a month. I had to buy this just for the replacement bumpers, so far they've worked great since I've replaced them back in April.

As for that I have found the older controllers, pre 3.5mm jack, to me way more reliable.

You can look through that seller’s items (or any comparable seller’s) for different colors/styles.

The side rails have an extra tab on the original controllers compared to the elite so you’ll have to break one off. Be careful though, it took me two tries on the side rails to get the right ones. The S style controllers and original style have slightly different molds and the seller mixed them up on me the first time.

I highly recommend the “soft touch” finishes for all controllers. That’s the style that the original elite faceplate has. Swapped out all of the controllers in my house (except the Minecraft creeper controller) with soft touch faceplates and side rails.

I have an "American Flag" one, that I got as a b-day gift, so I didn't know they were <$10.00.


It's pretty durable, and feels like a laptop skin, if you have one of those. Putting it on was a little bit of a pain, as I kept getting "bubbles" on the ends and it doesn't quite cover the whole "face" of the controller, so you can get some wrinkles where the controller curves, if you aren't careful. But for that price, they are worth a shot if you're interested.

Don’t buy SCUF. They’ll disintegrate within a few months. Go to Amazon and find some OEM side rails. If you don’t want to fork out $40 for the OEM parts; there are some that are nearly identical to OEMs and cost the same as the SCUF grips.

Yes, the SCUF grips are cheap and feel great out of the box. I thought the same thing. Then a few months in, the rubber on one of the thumbsticks felt loose and started to pull away from the metal. Even then, I told myself “no biggie, I’ll just replace it with another thumbstick.” Then another thumbstick went. Suddenly, the grips started to feel like they’d expanded. They had. The rubber had deformed and expanded like a sponge. On top of all that, the SCUF logo pattern had taken on a ton of grime that I’d never gotten on my stock elite grips.

All of that happened within six months. I’m a neat freak and make a legitimate effort to keep my stuff clean. Save yourself the headache of having to replace your grips in six months and just order OEM parts. Anything but SCUF.

I bought these grips a week or two ago and they work perfectly. It sure about the faceplate though.

I don't dislike woodgrain. I dislike making plastic look like woodgrain using stickers or other types of unconvincing fake veneer. ;)

 

It all comes down to the details.

 

For example:

1. This is cool: SKINOWN wood skin for PS4
   
2. But this is cringe: Pandaren wood skin for PS4
   
3. But the same wood pattern that I think looks cool on the PS4, looks terrible (to me) on the Xbox One because it leaves so much plastic exposed: Gam3Gear wood skin for Xbox One (same pattern as SKINOWN for PS4)
   
    
   
   See the difference? The difference between 1 and 2 is like the difference between pre-1.3 and post-1.3 textures in No Man's Sky. 1 looks like wood, but 2 looks like it's supposed to be wood. 3 looks like wood but the effect is ruined by the visible plastic that tell the viewer that it's not wood.
   
    
   
   To me, it's all about whether it makes the thing look like it's legitimately made of wood, versus having a "fake wood" veneer. Looks "real" = cool; looks "fake" = cringe. Again, this is all just my own opinion. This is descriptive of my preferences, NOT prescriptive of what yours should be.

Edit:
To get the splash I sprayed into a plastic cup so I got a little pool and then just flicked the cup so it splattered

Real easy fix. Just gotta order replacements, as annoying as that is.

These are what I ordered, and they worked great. Unfortunately they run out of stock easily, so timing is key. However, it's a really easy fix. Just pop those suckers off and replace.

I bought these replacement grips and they look exactly like the ones that came with the controller. You just pop off plastic pieces on the controller and snap these replacements on. Still annoying that this happens in the first place, but if you don't want to send your controller in or Microsoft won't help you out, this is an option.
