They are unable to live in the Oasis because of the Great Cat. The Runners have to run into the Oasis every morning, fill their packs with water, and outrun the Great Cat to bring life to their tribe. They experience the Joseph Campbell hero journey on a daily basis. The setting of the book is ultimately a commentary on the state of mankind, perpetually just outside of paradise, and only able to experience it fleetingly. The story has big themes: life and death, good and evil, love and hate.
