21. SunGrow Feeding Ring, 4x4 Inches, Floating Food Square, Easy to Install, Reduces Waste and Maintains Water Quality, Suitable for Flakes and Floating Fish Foods, for Goldfish and Other Smaller Fish

    Features:
  • Encourages Picky Eaters To Eat More --- Some fish are more finicky than others or maybe a bit more shy and do not want to eat with the other fish. The SunGrow Floating Fish Feeding Ring allows you to feed specialty foods to the pickier fish while sprinkling standard floating fish food to the general population of fish. It won’t take long for your finicky fish to quickly learn that the square fish feeder is where to find their supper.
  • Restrains Fish From Being Bullies --- A great way to restrict fish in a community tank from being bullies is to use multiple floating feeding rings. Fill one square fish feeder and allow your more aggressive fish to dash over to eat. Once they are occupied, add floating fish food to a second feeding square for the more timid fish. Bullies can’t hog all the rings, so add as many as you feel necessary so all your fish can eat in peace.
  • Lessens Debris By Keeping Food Contained --- By placing your pet fish’s food directly into the feeder square, it restricts the flakes and pellets from floating into the filter. A clearer aquarium filter is far more effective at keeping your tank’s water at a higher quality level and diminishes excess debris throughout the tank.
  • Fits Perfectly In A Fish Tank --- At a convenient size of 4” x 4” (10cm x 10cm), the lightweight Square Feeding Ring for small fish from SunGrow is constructed of high-quality plastic. It comes complete with a matching black suction cup to hold it securely in place. You also have the option of allowing the fish feeder to float freely along the surface of your freshwater tank or saltwater aquarium.
  • Saves Fish Owners’ Time And Money --- Effective and creative, the Square Feeding Ring for your neon tetra, guppy, and goldfish is fantastic at saving money on excess food, maintaining high-quality water and reducing filter clogging. Placing your flakes into a specified area means that you can control the dispersal of food and more is eaten and less is thrown away. Less stray food and filter clogs allow you to spend less time tank maintaining and more time enjoying with your pet fish.

Invest in an Automatic Feeder. Exo terra has also just released a feeder.

I attached one of these directly under the filter to keep my floating plants from getting pulled into the stream. Kinda ugly but it works.

I'll just point out two things that no one else has yet:

  1. There are automated turtle and fish feeders that attach to the rim of the tank. Obviously they're only for pellets, not veggies, but it would be a little better than no food for a week. Here's one on Amazon, and there's links on this page to similar products

  2. I would have someone come by to check on him at least once. I don't know how old your musk is, or how big your tank is, but things could go wrong. A light could burn out, or burst/shatter, the filter or tank could start leaking, the heater could stop working or burst, etc. Chances are nothing will happen, but if something does you don't want to wait a week to find out, especially if it's a water leak.

    Enjoy your vacation!

Basically Guppy isn't great at catching food. If it's in the surface it tends to float away from where I feed and it sinks near the back of the tank. Sometimes Guppy can't see the food floating until it sinks, then she chases it but if she isn't fast enough it hits the bottom and she ignores it. So I've devised this little setup.

Basically just a floating feeding ring and a betta leaf hammock. The floating ring keeps it from floating off and the leaf catches any bits that sink. The brown granules are easily noticed by Guppy on the green leaf and she knows where exactly to stay when she's being fed!

(I swear I'm not sponsored but this has been a real frustrating thing for me so in case anyone else is in this situation)

If you want there is a ~$20 automated feeder you could set up.

Might not be super reliable but it will at worst skip a feeding.

You have to adjust it and dial it in a little but you can choose how much they dispense each time and how often they dispense it.

The part I like most about my auto-feeder setup is that it will automatically dispense food at pre-determined times, or I can manually activate a feeding if I'm in front of the tank... and it skips the next scheduled feeding. At first I was going to use a stepper motor with some kind of dispensing cup... but quickly realized it would probably be expensive, and more difficult than a 'premade' solution... so I found this ...it's dirt cheap and works well... I hacked it open and found that there's a flat part on the rotating drum that activates a switch to tell it when to stop turning (it's too cheap for stepper motor). I cut the wire going to the switch and routed it to my relay (when the relay opens it fools the feeder into thinking its not in the correct position and it begins to rotate). I also hard wired DC power to it so I don't have to worry about batteries. I use New Life Spectrum Marine 1mm sinking pellets and they have never clogged the 'trap door'
