For realsies.. just slap on a songza dinner party playlist. I mean one of those lists gave me Howlin' Wolf to start off and you know that's a good time.
If you want to curate something yourself. I can not get enough of Frank by AmyWinehouse. I love that girl. I love that album. I listen to it all the time.. or i would if it was on my phone.. it isn't which is why I'm often listening to Holly Cole - Self-Titled or Diana Panton - To Brazil with Love I'd actually prefer If The Moon Turns Green but I don't have that atm.
If you're looking for single track suggestions there's this goofy looking dude with his hat he ALWAYS wears. You can't even be mad at Gregory Porter because his voice is so sweet. I mean this is more get up and dance in the kitchen than dinnertime conversation but hey that's cool too right?
Oh snap I just realized you said you know this girl. If this is like your girl homie yeah you can go hard with that To Brazil With Love or Frank. Whether you're trying to get some or just show some affection those should hit it out of the park and you can play a game like Jaipur or strip Coup over it if you want to warm up the brain before warming up the bodies.

I agree, 320 kbps mp3 is actually quite good despite all the negativity about mp3s. That said, there IS a noticeable difference if you are listening to excellently-recorded material through great speakers. I wasn't sure that there was a real difference until I used this cd. I believe it's the fifth track that has a really long cymbal sound that is just amazingly well-recorded, and THAT is where I could point to an actual difference between mp3 and wav (or flac/aiff/any other lossless medium).
After I was able to determine that there was a real difference, I started ripping all my music into lossless audio. The feeling that you might be missing out on just a bit of noticeable audio is too great to shake for me.
As for the original post, I also agree that the best thing is to get some high-quality headphones/speakers. Make sure you audition several pairs first, and really in that process you'll organically develop an appreciation for the better-quality audio. Just try not to get sucked into the hype about the supposed noticeable difference in sound quality between the $800- amps and the $8000+ amps or the cheapass cables vs the hyper-expensive cables. There is so much misinformation on this that it's beyond ridiculous.
That sounds like he prefers smooth jazz. That's quite a bit different than the mainstream jazz I recommended. I don't see anyone disliking Mehldau's Blues and Ballads but that may be due to the shortsightedness we tend to have on music we like.
If you want an idea of the difference, here's a mainstream jazz sample and a smooth jazz sample -Mainstream listener warning: Kenny G content-.
I don't know much about smooth jazz, which tends to be stuff like the above Kenny G and Yanni. That said those may be the instrumental pop extremes of smooth jazz. I recall finding David Sanborn and Grover Washington to be much more tolerable and may look for an album from those two, especially one originally released in the 1980s.
But while looking through the vinyl selection at Amazon UK I found this John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman LP. Coltrane is one of the most influential jazz saxophonists--and his later recordings are fairly avant garde--so I wouldn't normally recommend him for a smooth jazz fan, but that album is paired with a vocalist, they play mostly ballads and pretty sweetly, so that may be an option. There are samples on the listing. I'm confused by the description if that's a used album, though.
Fantastic price for that record - tempting as hell......plus sly and robbie KILLIN' it on those tracks. I just recently discovered Gainsbourg Percussions as well. Nice release with African/Latin tinged grooves. just waiting for a little better price on that one.
wait...people actually downvote contests? I was always surprised to hear about anyone downvoting anything here -__- /u/purebredginger needs to get in here, I don't know nearly as much about cat stuff.

|about|Charles Aznavour ((born Shahnour Vaghenag Aznavourian Armenian: Շահնուր Վաղինակ Ազնավուրյան Shahnowr Vaghinak Aznavowrhan, May 22, 1924, Paris) is perhaps the best-known French music hall entertainer in the world -- renowned the world over for the bittersweet love songs he has written and sung, which seem to embody the essence of French popular song, and also for his appearances on screen in such wildly divergent fare as Shoot the Piano Player, Candy, and The Tin Drum.|
