The hiking around here isn't awesome, but there's a good book called Hiking in Kansas City that should take care of everything for you.

Of course, Lake of the Ozarks is our getaway place, about two hours drive, and the further southeast in Missouri you go the better the hills get, so there's some good weekend camping options. I also recommend hiking in Prairie State Park about 2hrs straight south of KC - big open fields of nothing but 4 ft tall grass.

This is the book where I discovered the history. It tells it chronologically, with great old photography of the city. I found it years ago at Barnes & Nobles right after I moved to KC, and it really accelerated how quickly I fell in love with the city. I was working on my graduate paper, so I had free time whenever I wanted, and I used that book as a guide to explore the city and see the places I was reading about. It's surprising how many cool and/or beautiful places there are in KC that most people don't know about or just drive right past every day.

I was just at The Book House in Maplewood and saw a few books in their local section that looked very interesting. Weird Missouri and Finally! A Locally Produced Guidebook to St. Louis By and For St. Louisans.

Off the top of my head, you could visit Bevo Mill, The Minature Museum, and The Silver Ballroom Pinball Bar all in one stop.

Here is the Groupon for our Wax Museum. They don't exactly dust it....ever, but that actually makes it more fascinating.

You might be interested in one of the local meetups:

At the very least, check out their events; that'll give you some ideas for hikes! You might also get this book - http://www.amazon.com/Hiking-Kansas-City-William-Eddy/dp/1891708325 It details hikes all around the metro area and even in surrounding areas that are a little farther away (like Weston).
