Everyone is different and the process of learning to draw can be arduous, this is just based on what I have found.....

Tools are expensive for drawing, "good" pencils will not help that face you're drawing look good if you don't have a conceptual understanding of line, value, light, gravity and composition. It will look even worse if you cannot draw with purpose... That means practising drawing lines a lot! I started out drawing at 21 from scratch, so that meant filling page after page with lines at every angle and length, I thank myself now because drawing a straight line is something I do every day now, it helps to do it without thinking. An hour of practise is worth more than the extra money you spend on gimmicky hardware that claims it will make you an artist just by picking it up. HB pencils are free from IKEA and biros can be stolen from work, as can copy paper.

That being said some really good tools to have for learning to draw:

  • Mechanical pencil is always a good tool, it won't break in your bag and you don't need to dispose of sharpening mess.
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001J8CI1Q/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_nMScvb17VY2XH
  • A good eraser is perhaps the only tool I'd spend money on to begin with (though if you're learning leaving mistakes on paper is good because you can torture yourself with them and learn by them).Faber-Castell GRIP 2001 Eraser Caps (Pack of 4) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00JN5C7LS/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_BNScvb08HQVTX
  • sketchbook - you can spend a lot of money on a sketchbook. This is where your skill comes in to play, don't spend more than you need to if you're filling pages with practise. It should be smooth and sturdy to withstand erasers and don't bother with special bleed proof pads. Your medium should match your tools here. A4 - 40 Sheet Cartridge Paper Spiral Sketch Pad https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000N3ZYMI/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_cQScvb1ZE2JNB
  • books. Read and understand these, you will not regret practising all the excersises in these books till you know them backwards. Good reading includes: Drawing on the right side of the brain - Betty Edwards, Figure drawing for all its worth - Andrew Loomis, Perspective for Beginners - Numerous, and any books published by artists you respect or like the style of.
  • youtube is a great resource, check out https://m.youtube.com/user/Sycra and https://m.youtube.com/user/markcrilley

I would suggest just finding a quiet spot, getting one of these books, a few scraps of paper a cheap pencil or biro, and practising til your fingers bleed. But I am a masochist with zero talent who needs to practise all day. If you can draw something better than you did yesterday you're progressing.

TLDR: Get Drawing on the Right side of the brain - Betty Edwards and do the excersises on copy paper from work and a cheap pencil.

Yes, 2b is a really appreciated and standard darkness for leads, but the thing is if you go darker the lead will wear out faster as it leaves more graphite on the paper eveytime you use it.

https://www.amazon.com/Sakura-Color-Foam-Eraser-RFW100-5P/dp/B004VKIUOS/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=sakura+foam+erasers&qid=1575155981&sprefix=sakura+foam&sr=8-3

That is the link for the erasers Im talking about!

And yeah Ahaha there is so much to consider, but it’s always a matter of personnal choice at the end of the day. The grip can be a problem for some if they have sensitive skin, if you have « moist hands » it can be a plus to have more agressive grip, etc. And the color in itself really is a personnal esthetic choice, but from experience and owning a few rotring in both black and silver, the black ones looks better I think but scratch a bit more easily.

If you want to know anything else, let me know ! And also, there is much more pencils brand than rotring, and some REALLY great models out there !

I'm a graphic design student and I'm running out of pencils and other things... Honestly, we're printing a lot and are having tons of files.

To me it is more about the use of retro technology and the lack of distractions from the modern computer environment. I used to write short stories back in the days before I used modern computers and operating systems. These days I write short essays or instructional guides on my typewriter as well as letters to my girlfriend. Maybe I should scan in and post one of the documents I made. I will probably re-type the one page so it scans better (I used a Ko-Rec-Type strip on it, I find using an eraser leads to better scanning/copying). Also I find that using an eraser is even more of an incentive to not make errors.

Speaking of distractions in the modern computing environment. I've tabbed off of this browser window three times at least while making this post (and probably a bit more for the section below)

My typewriter is a Smith Corona Coronet Super 12 Coronamatic in baby blue. It needs a new card holder, but there is a shop that I can call that might have it up in Johnstown.

My eraser is a Faber-Castell Perfection: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OZF13W

I have a nice Rubber/Eraser That is only £0.69/$1 with free shipping :) It is on my stationary wishlist :)

Nice duck and cover, asshole. A shame it didn't work.

u/bemusedresignation · 1 pointr/EngineeringStudents

My favorite is Sensematic pencils. They are autofeed lead, so no clicking out too much lead and breaking it off....no clicking at all actually. The erasers are great quality too.

You do have to protect the tip so it doesn't bang around on stuff but storing them upside-down in a pencil box works fine for this. I buy a new pack of 5 every 2 semesters or so and that's plenty.

I do consume the erasers faster than the pencils, but add a set of these and you're set for years: http://www.amazon.com/Ticonderoga-Combination-Multi-Pack-Multicolored-38931/dp/B0050A6APY/ref=sr_1_1?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1398696611&sr=1-1&keywords=ticonderoga+eraser

u/dumbnotdumber · 2 pointsr/pencils

You might also want to look into erasers. The erasers on the kuru toga's are very small since they're hidden under the cap.

You could either buy a refill for the erasers or buy a block eraser...or both...both is good.

I bought a package of sakura color foam erasers. They'll make it look like you never wrote anything.

Or you could buy the refills.

Refill s for the pipe slide.

Refill c for the roulette

Doesn't really matter what you go with, but any of these 3 are better erasers than on any wooden #2 pencil you've ever written with.

Amazing eraser that blows the Pentel ones out of the water. More expensive though, when I bought them they were $6 but it looks like the price went up a little bit.

u/brandon_g1234 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

THIS pencil is actually an eraser, and I would love to try implementing it with my drawings.

You could also consider an eraser pencil, which you can sharpen to a point for more precision: Faber Castell Faber-Castell Perfection Eraser Pencil with Brush https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OZF13W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_kgp-ybM1HV7ZP

Hmm hadn't heard of those. Something like this?

u/FunnyMan3595 · 36 pointsr/TalesFromRetail

Interesting looking gizmo.

Also, seems like a pretty reasonable customer. Admitted it was a rare item, asked for alternatives but didn't find anything suitable, got a bit frustrated, and left.

u/RogueStudio · 1 pointr/pencils

If you absolutely must have jumbo sized eraser caps, Faber-Castell makes them.

If you live outside of Europe, they will come at an imported price tag. (here's an Amazon global listing, and UK based Jacksons appears to ship them internationally...) .

I personally use something like a stick eraser with my jumbos if they have no eraser (I use boring Pentel Clic Erase, Tombow Mono stick erasers are also decent, just a bit more pricey), or as the previous person said, a block eraser. If size is an issue, Pentel Hi-Polymer, Staedtler Mars Plastic or Rasoplast, and Tombow Mono (among others) do make block erasers in a small or mini size.
