so many questions! @_@ I'll try and answer what ones I can

• for your first kit I think I'd most highly recommend the hg rx-78-2 revive, on top of being just an all around amazing kit it is also really inexpensive averaging around the $12 range and I bought both of mine at Barnes and noble (yep, I like it so much I have two) but there is also amazon, hlj (hobby link Japan), gundam planet, etc where you can buy it
  
  
• beginning tools wise a pair of side cutters is pretty much a must and they can vary greatly in price but honestly a cheap pair from a local hobby shop will serve you just fine, an x-acto knife and sandpaper/sanding sticks/file set for sanding down or taking care of nubs is the next two things I'd recommend and with that stuff you're good to go
  
  
• I don't have a light box so I can't really answer this, as a poor man's solution I've sometimes used the bottom half of the gunpla box on its side with some white copy paper laying in it (2-4 sheets) to make like a fake light box
  
  
• the thing about rx-78-2 and zaku/char's zaku ii is that since they are from the oldest gundam series and so well known and iconic there are like a zillion (not really) versions of them floating about in the ether so it may be a little hard at first to get them matching each other perfectly unless you go for like a specific set that you know matches like say the real grade line and get each of the three suits from just that line, but I wouldn't worry too much about them looking like they match up perfectly with each other because it can be surprisingly easy and fun to collect several versions of a single unit (I have 5 rx-78-2's in just high grade form and two of those are the exact same kit, the revive with one as an out of box build and the other painted and customised slightly)

Bandai is (IMO) the top of the Japanese heap, model-wise - well-engineered, complex but not fiddly. Their Eva offerings are OK, but where they really shine is the Gundam stuff. Currently, they're available as 1/144 HG (no inner frames, decent articulation and detail), 1/144 RG (inner frames and high detail) 1/100 Re/100 (no inner frames, decent external detail, 'niche' MS) 1/100 MG (current ones have internal frames and high detail; older ones, not so much), 1/60 PG (big scale, high detail inside and out), and some 1/144, 1/100 and other 'No Grade' (older, low-articulation, low color separation kits), and some non-Gundam stuff like VOTOMS (we'll get there in a bit). Like everything else, newer kits will have better parts layouts than older kits. You can check Dalong.net, for visual reviews, parts counts, scale comparisons, and so forth.

In HG, most of the kits from Char's Counterattack, Unicorn, Build Fighters/Try and Iron Blooded Orphans on are excellent kits, with prices running from £6 up to £35

In RG, (IMO) the best kit, in terms of detail, design, and durability is the RG Gundam Mk II AEUG, priced at a very reasonable £15.

MG run from £16.75 up (Ball is love; Ball is life) up to the mind-blowing, £95 Sazabi ver.Ka. Yes, it's pricey, but it's one of the best-engineered models you'll ever build. 37 runners of multicolored, snap-fit glory.

PGs are well out of your price range, all well over the £100 mark.

Outside the Gundamverse, Bandai also does 1/20 VOTOMS; but slightly over your cap at £65 They also do Macross kits (the current series is Delta; kits are just now being released), but their transforming requirements make them a little explodey. They also do Yamato and other spacecraft; I don't have a lot of experience with them.

Past Bandai, Kotobukiya does some excellent Armored Core (among other properties) kits; they are a little finickier fit wise, and a little pricier, coming in at around £45 and up. They work best for experienced modelers who aren't afraid of complex painting jobs. Hasegawa does non-transforming Valkyries; they will need glue and paint to look good. Hasegawa also does the love-to-get-grubby, need-glue-and-paint-and-patience Maschinen Krieger line.

Beyond that, you start getting into smaller makers, and resin kits, and imports direct from Asia, and probably out of your area of interest.

I'd recommend getting the MG RX-78-2 Origin Ver. if he doesn't have it already. It's simply a great, great kit and is definitely worth all the money. I can ramble on about how great it is, but instead i'll just quote u/MechaGaikotsu like I usually do.

But pose this thing just right, and no amount of wings, mass and fancy clear effect parts will outstage how perfectly engineered this is. It demonstrates on every level, why Gunpla is the king of the mecha model kit. This isn't just the best Master Grade of 2015, this is Master Grade redefined, this is Master Grade perfected, this is the best Master Grade.

Another kit I would recommend that he get if he didn't have it would be the Hyaku Shiki 2.0. It's overall a really well engineered kit, and the fact that it comes in a mesmerising matte gold finish helps it ever so more. However, that gold finish does have two negatives, one being the horrible nubs that it leaves after a cut, the other being the price for that gold.

It should be fine asking here, most of us in /r/Gunpla are subbed here too anyway.

Anyway, if your Bf has never built a gundam model before he should probably start with a cheaper High Grade (or HG) model first, they are very simple and won't look that amazing but it works as an introduction.

If your Bf has built a gundam model before then you should probably get him a Master Grade (or MG) model, they tend to be leaps and bounds better than the HG models but they do require some discipline and a modest amount of experience to put together.

I should note that gundam model kits don't have english instructions, but the illustrations used in the instructions are excellent and don't really need additional text for you to follow them. It's not anything major but it might cause confusion if you don't know about it before hand.

Amazon is probably your best bet for where to buy from, you're just more certain of the support you'll get if there is a problem and the savings you might get from ebay would be marginal at best. You could potentially buy from Hobby Link Japan which will feature better base prices and has a good reputation, but they ship from Japan so the shipping cost might not be worth it sometimes.

And finally I went looking for Heavy Arms kit on Amazon already and found a HG version and a MG version which is currently on sale. You could get them both for just about $50 before shipping. This is great if your Bf has never put together a kit before, he could get used to how things are done with the HG kit, then used what he's learned on the more difficult MG kit.

Nice build. I have this in my backlog as well as the effect part set for it. Hopefully will get to it one day.

As for kit recommendations.

If going HG recommend the HG Revive RX 78-2 (amzn.com/B00WW4F8YA).

Very newcomer friendly. Also good if you wanna start panel lining. Articulation is also great and you can do many awesome poses.

As for MG, the RX 78-2 (Origin) (amzn.com/B014SCW9DQ) or Wing Proto Zero (amzn.com/B00EOEB908) are nice kits as straight builds. Although you can practice panel lining with those as well.

But feel free to branch out. Gunpla is freedom.

The IBO line is also good, both the HG's and NG's (No MG's exist for IBO as of yet).

There was a fairly recent release of a High Grade Wing Gundam Zero kit, but it looks like he prefers MGs... I think there are a few variations of the Wing Gundam kit, such as the Proto Version, Wing Gundam(EW), Wing Zero(EW). or if you want to be the best friend ever there is the Perfect Grade Wing Gundam.

If he is a fan of the Gundam Wing series, it is worth considering Deathscyth, Deathscythe Hell, or Sandrock, which are other 'protagonist' mobile suits that fight sort-of along side the Wing Gundam.

There is also Epyon and Tallgeese, two 'bad guy' mobile suits from the same series.

If he is a fan of the original Gundam series, the RX-78 or a Zaku kit(there are many variations) would be good as well.

Also, be careful buying on Amazon if you want it to be delivered by the 10th (or shortly after). Quite a few of the sellers with good prices are based in Japan so it can take upwards of a month or more for the item to arrive if you buy it from them. It can be easy to miss that information if you're not paying attention.

Your best bet is to delete this and post it again on r/Gunpla. They have an incredibly friendly community and they'd love to help you choose a good model to start with, as well as give you some recommendations on beginner tools.


For a more immediate answerm there are three MG versions of the Wing The TV version, the EW Version, the EW Zero Version, and the Proto Zero. The Wing Zero EW is an older kit, but does have the angel-style wings if you're looking for those, and my personal preference is the Wing EW.


Also, while there's certainly nothing wrong with starting with an MG, I highly recommend with either the HG Wing, or the HG Wing Zero. They're both really modern HG's that look great out of the box, and are cheaper too.

At the end of the day, you should definitely check out r/Gunpla for any further questions, or even just to check out some builds you're interested in.

Hi there, to answer your question, they can be posed. The glue isn't really required, it just helps some pieces stay on or together in the case of the Shadow Fox's face (the teeth on my girlfriend's came out at the slightest bump until I cemented it). No real issues on any others, but I would suggest it just in case you get a defect.

Now I do I have a few suggestions on which one would be a good starter zoid so that you're not too overwhelmed like I was. Personally I felt that the Liger Zero, Shadow Fox, and Gunsniper were really enjoyable to put together. The only issues with the lot are Shadow Fox's teeth and the Gunsniper has these hoses that are a pain to fiddle with.

Although, if you want a real challenge, I suggest the Gojulas (this one is gonna end up costing you upwards of $300 nowadays, but I assure you it is marvelous when fully assembled), Berserk Fuhrer, or the Geno Breaker (this one has an issue with a piece on the neck that looks a bit like a vent, it is really fragile if handled improperly).

So ideally you go to a local hobby store and look at what models they have, then pick one you like and within your price range. You can start off with 1/144 scale HGs (High Scale), but I am a firm believer that if you can follow instructions, you can start at any scale and any grade. I am a sucker for kits with cool box arts (like the MG Shin Musha). Get a pair of side cutters to help with [piece from tree removal] (http://www.ghostofzeon.com/diy/assembly/removingparts.html). Obviously, shop around to get a good price. There are a wealth of useful links and threads on right hand column under "Current Events" (not sure why it is under current events...) I started with a master grade, and I'm sure you would do well, but try whatever you feel comfortable with! You can search through related searches and find a lot in the 10-20 dollar range. Good luck, let us know what you choose!

I started building gunpla early this year and have done about 30 kits, so no expert but I have some experience to stand on. That being said, the HGUC RX-78-2 Revive was my first kit and I'd recommend that to anyone. The kit is forgiving (white doesn't show nub-marks/stress marks as much as dark colors), it doesn't require too much from the builder, and the end result is very stable and articulate. It's what cemented my new hobby. And it's relatively cheap at ~$14 US.

For a lengthier and more complicated build (though I would argue not really more difficult) I'd suggest the RG Gundam Mark II. Again, the kit succeeds in being stable, articulate, and the build progresses rather seamlessly. It also looks really awesome when completed.

There are a few other builds that for me stand out as being just very satisfying-- the HG Gerbera Tetra, the RG Char's Z'Gok- but the two I've singled out above are superlative in my opinion.

Well never build it myself, but I would think its a good one on that fact that it is much simpler than the MG but that is actually a high price for that kit. You could get the much better Master Grade version for less. Also Its not "on sale". This kit is in NO WAY worth $70. The high price for this specific one you mentioned is around $25.

Or you I would suggest the 1/100 scale Avalanche Exia. This is like the Exia you picked out but it has a lot more detail, but its also good for beginners.

I own both 11 & 10's PJ set, and I love it. They are fun, cozy, and also quite fashionable. In the $25-$30 range, it's not too expensive, considering it's a set. Hope you enjoy it.

HLJ seems to have a pretty good price -- I would wait until they get it back in stock, if you can agree to their shipping cost. I looked on Amazon and it's $90.53 with free 2 day shipping if you have amazon prime.

HLJ's markup isn't too bad. I walked into a Yodobashi camera (a big-box electronics/hobby/home retailer like Best Buy on steroids) in Tokyo and the cheapest I've seen the Sinanju OVA version is like 5200 yen.

The instruction leaflet or box normally has some cool poses, and you can normally find high quality versions of these pictures knocking about. I usually start with a pose similar to these and change it so it looks good on my desk. I've got the RG Destiny ready to build and I'm planning on having it in the flying forward with sword pose.

When they're flying I like to have one leg forward and bent and the other straight out behind. The arms are usually one outstretched and the other behind. I find a setup like that usually looks great. Whatever you think looks cool should be the final position though.

All Gunpla kits come in coloured plastic so you don't have to paint them. Any paint or other details are purely optional.

As for kits to start with, there's a kit just for beginners. Any other high grade kits are generally good to start with but I'd personally recommend Iron Blooded Orphans series kits since they're pretty cheap and have great articulation.

I got a question for you.
How much do you want to spend on cutters?

Some notable brands for cutters are (listed from price ascending) Xuron($10-$20), Tamiya($25-$30), Gundam Planet($35), and then Godhand($55-$??). (There might be others, but I have found these to be the most popular.)

Right now I have Gundam Planet nippers. They are the best nippers I have had so far, but I have only owned one other pair so dont take my word to heart. What ever you do don't go for a $5 pair not worth it at all. I did that and I spent more time fixing the mistakes those clippers did to my model.

Personal opinion get a pair of Tamiya Sharp Pointed Side Cutters or Gundam Planet Nippers. In all honesty though I have no been able to replicate that slow cut with my GP nippers. Another point is I have been able to get pretty close if you scratch the white part with your finger nail it almost looks like the slow cut photo.

P.S. Really though all of your clean up with the nubs is going to be with sand paper and a razor blade of some sort. I just ordered myself a OLFA Rubber Grip Utility Knife, but you can also get a OLFA Cushion Grip Knife if you want one of them.

The most recent kit i've built is the Real Grade Destiny gundam. It was a really fun kit to build, and it looks great even if you don't apply the cornucopia of stickers that are included. The RG line might be a bit complicated for a beginner though.

I'd recommend looking up the kits on This site before you buy them. The site has many pictures of the runners, manuals, etcetera so you can see if the kit would be too complicated before you buy it. If you don't know which kit you're looking for, look for designations like the grade or scale(1/144, HG, Etc.)

Do you have any nippers or wire cutters? i'd say that they're the most important tool for building, as you can't just remove the pieces by hand. I use an old pair of wire cutters, and although they leave some nub marks, they do their job very well.

Welcome to the hobby! If you're new to Gundam then I would suggest looking into kits from the series you're watching/most familiar with. There's useful links on the sidebar for tips and tricks while building, but a Gundam Marker, A Hobby Knife, and a pair of Side Cutters for Plastic should be a decent start.

Actually I'd suggest getting the HG Gunpla Starter Set #1 or #2. This tool set is also a pretty good starting point for the tools you'll need while building.

Where are you from? Because if you're in the US there's a number of stores that sells gunpla. Otherwise there's HLJ and Hobby Search for importing.

Just so you know if you're not aware, Master Grade model kits (which I assume this is) are pretty affordable and all of the plastic runners come pre-colored so painting isn't at all necessary. Also the kits are entirely snap fit! So you don't even have to glue and wait, it's awesome. I actually went to a con like that today for the first time, it was a cool experience tho I went to a small one.

Many people dress up and cosplay but they're not in character, some don't even like it when you take random pictures of them without permission, but you they love if you compliment them and if you ask for a pic they will get in character.

Some people are really crafty, others paid for their cosplay and had someone do it, some others just didn't even try :P

Many years ago when I was a kid, I had a lot of fun putting together Gundam models. They were really cheap little ones though, since I was like 12. I had a little Deathscythe model in a box until I moved out of my first apartment lol.

In under 60, you can most certainly get some good MGs. I normally get my stuff from Japanese online stores, but the shipping will probably break your budget. So look on Amazon, I'm seeing a good amount of good kits under 60. Including:

  I haven't browsed Amazon extensively but I'd also look for the MG Jesta and MG GM 2.0, MG Zaku II.

Kshatriya can be there by Friday with free shipping. I've never seen $25 shipping on an amazon kit, ever. They're almost always either free 2 day shipping, or free boat from japan shipping.

Aile Strike Ver. RM is supposed to be a very good kit: It even includes ArcAngel launch stand, and for the Amazon price of 40 USD, its actually cheaper than Bandai's suggested retail price of 4200 JPY.

Strike Rouge Otori is currently at an okay price: 44 USD compared to Bandai's 4200 JPY suggestion. It includes a stand, but not the launch bay stand.

I am painting the equipment, yeah. I decided to go with a silver sharpie instead of silver paint for the Progressive Knife, and it looks a lot better than I thought it would. I have this version of 01 and like how pose-able it is.

I build models, though I only do ones I don't have to paint because ain't nobody got time fo' that. You can do boring things like cars and planes, or you can do fully articulated super robots like I do, and it's marginally less expensive than physically burning money for your entertainment.

these are just my personals as they are fairly light weight in terms of armor and weapons but they do great. i especially recommend the 3.0 but its abit fragile but it poses, articulates and has alot of movies pieces.

I'd recommend the Sinanju OVA Ver. or the Nu Gundam Ver. KA because I've heard they both look really good and are fun to put together.

The MG is larger and more complex, the HG is smaller. Both are good, detailed kits! And those are just the Gundam itself - there are lots of other kits from the original series, too! For instance, the Zaku I And Zaku II, Gouf, Gelgoog, GM, and more. If you want some more suggestions, you might try the r/gunpla subreddit, too.

Edit: You could also just look for kits labeled HGUC - that means High Grade Universal Century. High Grade is a type of model, Universal Century is sort of the “main” Gundam series - so, the original series and its sequels.

The HG Rx-78-2 Revive is a great solid kit. Fairly cheap and iconic too. In general Hg kits are sold individually, but sometimes you can find two-in-ones, like this but the kits are fairly old and you’d be better off buying the newer versions.

For tools you can go down to a hobby shop and grab some spruce cutters and a hobby knife. Maybe some sandpaper if you want to go more in depth, but I wouldn’t worry too much about your first kit. Shouldn’t run you more than $15.

How many Gunpla kits have you built? If you think your skilled enough, and want one that is kick-ass and has a ton of pieces, check out the MG Sazabi Ver. Ka, or the MG Sinanju OVA. You could do a lot of cool custom stuff with the Sazabi. This one is really well done. You could also do something like Syd's custom Sinanju

Basically, things sold by Toy shop japan hobbyone tend to be a little cheaper with good shipping. They do have an issue with a few things that appear to not be HGs listed as HGs though.

For the most part, the 1/100 MG kits will have bigger pieces (and more of them), so you might enjoy them more. There are also non graded 1/100 kits out there (they're a lot more like a big HG than an MG) that you might enjoy, tho some of those kits can have weird proportions and lack detail, ex: 1/100 Aile Strike vs MG Aile Strike RM

MG Sazabi is a beast of a kit, and it's just barely under $100 on Amazon at the moment.

Any version of the Unicorn Gundam is a good pick, though I'm not sure on Prime availability.

HG Kshatriya with Prime is ~$60.

Maybe a variation on the Sinanju? Stein, Ver. Ka, or Animation Color

Found it cheap in a random model store when I was cruising around for work.

Yeah I have the MG EW of that same kit and my god is it totally different. Here is the Amazon page for it. I didn't pay $40 for it though, but its worth that price.

MG RX-78 Origin ticks most of those boxes. It's a modern kit of the oldest gundam. (despite the Amazon photos, the kit is in full color. Next to no paint needed)

Not terribly expensive, not overly complicated, iconic, articulate, etc. Good kit to get back into the hobby with.

If you want to just blow him away, Sazabi Ver Ka always works.

It wasn't actually a gundam, but a [valvrave] (http://kakumeikivalvrave.wikia.com/wiki/Valvrave_I) instead. I told myself I'd never do all those tiny sticker lines again (though TBH it's not that bad since I'm 5'2" so I have tiny hands). 3 years later I bought another one and still did all the white stickers...

Though my first actual gundam kit was an HG 1/144 RG Destiny. Wasn't that bad but I didn't do the stickers at all.

The linked kit is not a MG kit. It is a 1/100 NG kit. It will be very similar in construction to the 1/144 HG kits you've already built.

I recently upgraded to the Gundam Planet Nippers side cutters and highly recommend them. These really cut and not just pinch the plastic to give that clean cut. The result is less cleanup with the Xacto blade.

I've built two different Real Grade models and they are very difficult for experienced builders let alone amateurs. I would NOT get a "REAL GRADE" kit. Go for a HGUC (High Grade Universal Century) kit. Like this one:

1: In this kit, there is no water slide decals just regular stickers, so you do not have to worry about applying those. (P.S. When applying the stickers for the piping, they kept coming off, so I used a weak glue, you could also use a gold paint or sharpie).

2: I nipped all the nubs, then sliced off the excess with an exact-o knife, then sanded with 500 grit, then 1000.
The white marks are probably stress marks from when you cut the pieces from the runners. So just use sharp nippers and be gentle with cutting and you should avoid the white marks.


But im no expert, this is my first kit haha.
